Abstract Pesantren is an Islamic boarding school and is the oldest community-based education system in Indonesia. The methods of instruction in Pesantren are over 400 years. The focus of Pesantren is Islamic teaching, teaching community values, literacy and numeracy.  Pesantren has to compete with the contemporary educational practices currently used in Indonesia. Pesantren, as an educational institution faces challenges not only come from outside, but also from within the organization. The complex roles of the Kyai as the leader, for instance, needs to be revisited and this paper highlights the history, key roles of the Kyai and the institutional framework of Pesantren.  Arguably, there is a need to challenge the role of the leaders (Kyai) and communication patterns within the Pesantren it can respond to contemporary issues influencing education in Indonesia.  The study suggests the use of restructuring and redesigning for Pesantren. The restructuring includes, but not limited to, transforming leadership role and involving teachers in designing the curriculum. Redesigning encompasses the idea of shared responsibility among teachers and redesigning infrastructure. In short, Pesantren has embedded strengths and resources used to face challenges and accommodate changes in society. The Kyai have significant roles in revisiting those resources. How to Cite : Rahayani, Y. (2017). Discipline culture is a reflection of the quality of educational institutions. The low level of discipline is the main problem of every educational institution. The role of leadership is very much needed in overcoming this problem. This paper aims to describe the leadership role of madrasah principals in improving the disciplinary culture of students at MAS Patra Mandiri Plaju Palembang. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive analytic study method. Data were collected using interview techniques, observation and documentation study. The results of this study indicate that the headmaster of MAS Patra Mandiri Plaju Palembang has played its role and function in improving the disciplinary culture of students in a fairly good category. This is supported by 2 factors, namely (1) the role models of madrasah principals in complying with school regulations; and (2) socialization of school discipline rules and sanctions for violations. The obstacles faced by madrasah principals are (1) there are still some teachers who do not exemplify student attitudes; and (2) there are still students who are not "deterred" to be given disciplinary violations.

This article discusses the first experiences of a supplementary imam training program that has been designed in the Netherlands for community-based imams, female religious leaders and mosque committee members. This “Professionalization of Imams in the Netherlands” program (PIN) was set up as a cooperation of the Representative Council of Muslims (CMO) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, supported by state-subsidy. The article discusses how the initiators maneuvered within and beyond the politicized burden of expectation that has surrounded the establishment of European-based imam training programs for decades now. The article provides a unique insight into the program’s design, its collaborative partners and participants’ experiences, understanding the program as a site of deliberative engagement. It shows how the stakeholders ideally see ownership of the curriculum and trainee recruitment as a shared responsibility for the Muslim community and the public educational institution, whereas the state is willing to finance it. The article outlines how in this attempt the stakeholders must deal with some paradoxical dynamics that influence this notion of “shared ownership”. Sharing these analytical observations and recommendations will hopefully help stakeholders involved in setting up similar European programs to make rational decisions on content and format of (future) supplementary programs, within and beyond fields of power, authority and interest.

The emergence of tariqa movements in the Indonesian Archipelago occurred at the same time of the expanding network of ulama who studied at the holy land, Mecca. One of tariqas that has existed as the result of the spreading of such ulama network is the Tariqa Qadiriyah Naqsyabandiyah. This is one of the tariqas that is considered legitimated and followed by thousands of people in Indonesia, including people of Jambi. Yet the development of this tariqa in Jambi, in which its follower has gradually increased since the 1990s, is less exposed. Followers of tariqa have practiced not only religious and ritual gathering, zikr, but also engaged in philanthropic events which risen hundreds of millions of funds. Such philanthropic events had significantly contributed to the tariqa movement from which it is able to stand free from state’s intervention as well as capable to privately fund its educational institution and boarding school. This article intends to seek the historical aspect of the TariqaQadiriyah Naqsyabandiyah and how it contributes in shaping educational institution and economic sphere of people in Jambi. This study therefore uses historical method in perceiving the role of Tariqa in its society. The data for this study were gathered by conducting observation, interview, and document studies. The study concludes that the tariqa movement in Jambi, particularly in Kuala Tungkal, managed to self-fund its boarding school and educational institution which are affiliated with it. The fund is mainly risen from several occasions of commemoration of the tariqa founder, Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilany.

The aim of the article is to show the sociological elements in the education process that are present in Korczak’s pedagogy, both in its scientific form as well as in his fiction aimed directly at children. Therefore, society with its educational institutions (family, school, boarding school) is recognized in this pedagogy as an important sphere of symbolic references and educational influences. The key role of society (as the most important educational institution) in shaping pupils is present in commonly known works on the sociology of upbringing (including Florian Znaniecki or Józef Chałasiński), while sociological threads in Korczak’s pedagogy have not been a popular topic of separate analysis so far, apart from one monograph devoted to the subject. Therefore, this topic requires in-depth analyses and afterthought. Janusz Korczak emphasizes the role of society in a child’s life, preparing them primarily for participation in social relations, through diverse forms of group life at school, whose most important achievement is the institution of student self-government. It is thus a bridge between student-oriented education and the traditional pedagogical message, involving the transmission of the requirements of specific social roles.
