This article discusses the first experiences of a supplementary imam training program that has been designed in the Netherlands for community-based imams, female religious leaders and mosque committee members. This “Professionalization of Imams in the Netherlands” program (PIN) was set up as a cooperation of the Representative Council of Muslims (CMO) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, supported by state-subsidy. The article discusses how the initiators maneuvered within and beyond the politicized burden of expectation that has surrounded the establishment of European-based imam training programs for decades now. The article provides a unique insight into the program’s design, its collaborative partners and participants’ experiences, understanding the program as a site of deliberative engagement. It shows how the stakeholders ideally see ownership of the curriculum and trainee recruitment as a shared responsibility for the Muslim community and the public educational institution, whereas the state is willing to finance it. The article outlines how in this attempt the stakeholders must deal with some paradoxical dynamics that influence this notion of “shared ownership”. Sharing these analytical observations and recommendations will hopefully help stakeholders involved in setting up similar European programs to make rational decisions on content and format of (future) supplementary programs, within and beyond fields of power, authority and interest.

This article shows how bargaining on the conflicting issues of fighting unemployment and increasing competitiveness has evolved. It offers an empirical insight into the degree to which the national framework agreements that form part of the now famous Dutch polder model are implemented. At the national level framework agreements are set up and recommendations are made on a wide range of issues. It is shown that these are then interpreted and partly adopted by negotiators at lower collective bargaining levels. At company level, three cases illustrate differences in the degree to which companies implement the outcomes of collective agreements: from ‘dedicated follower’ to ‘rebels with a cause'. Looking at the evidence, it seems the Dutch have experienced a form of organised decentralisation.

There is a need for high school, college, and university educators to introduce their students to a history of mankinds development of religions and beliefs in God. Regarded as too sensitive a subject, students are deprived of learning how mankind has evolved ways to establish moral and righteous behavior to maintain harmony among competing groups within a growing community. Based upon facts and findings surfaced by such respected Egyptologists as James H. Breasted and E.A. Wallis Budge, this author conclusively reveals how the first formal religion of Egypt has been emulated by the Judaic, Christian, and Islamic religions. Historical findings provide meaningful evidence of the spiritual nature of man, the emergence of one God Amen, the development of the concepts of truth, a soul, hereafter, Son of God, and a universal God. These findings afford greater insights in the fields of theology, humanities, psychology, and sociology studies. More importantly, a greater understanding of the nature of man can energize religious leaders and the public to effect possible solutions with the assistance of those with perceptive minds and love of humanity.

In this article I will first investigate the response Freudian psychoanalysis received in the Netherlands from 1905, when the first Dutch analyst began to practice psychoanalysis, until the beginning of World War II. Then I will briefly describe the development of psychoanalysis after the war.In the Netherlands as elsewhere Freudian psychoanalysis was transmitted first to the medical profession, that is to say, to a segment of the Dutch social elite. From there, Freud's ideas spread to other parts of the elite, especially the intellectuals and the religious leaders, after which psychoanalysis was filtered down to the public at large in a form the elite thought appropriate to it.

The transnational religious thought of Salafi Wahabi has received a significant response from some Muslims in Sintang City. The response, among others, is marked by the establishment of a Salafi Study Center at Abu Bakr mosque that has influenced some congregations of the surrounding mosques such as al-Amin mosque, Nur Mosque, and al-Muttaqin Mosque in Kampung Ladang area. In addition, another religious thought of Jamaah Tabliqh also gets adherents from the surrounding community in Masuka. They have set up a mosque to accommodate their religious activities. The positive response to the transnational religious thought has also been found in the hinterland of Ketungau Hilir and Tempunak sub-districts in Sintang City area. This work discusses the roles of Penghulu (the official Islamic religious leaders) in Sintang District in responding to the growing of the transnational religious thought. Based on qualitative data and analysis gathered in the field, the work suggests that the marriage administers (the penghulu) have not shown their satisfying performance with well structured programs. In fact, the penghulu sets in a strategic position within the society. They have focused more on marriage counselling as their services to religious guidance to the community. Special programs for spiritual direction with a broader range of materials have not been attracting their attention due to their limited time allocated and facilities available. Therefore, this work recommends that it is urgent to initiate the construction of knowledge that is not easily to be exposed by transnational religious traditions that tend to act radically. The penghulu may better provide insight into Islamic moderation or moderate Islam to the community in the region.

Most psychiatrists undergo 4 years of residency training after medical school before being eligible to practice independently. Apart from basic training in biostatistics and exposure to research methodology in a few training programs, most trainees spend their training primarily taking care of patients. As attending, most psychiatrists have little time for research. However, psychiatrists in the community offer an important resource for clinical trials. Collaborating with a pharmaceutical company or university hospitals requires an understanding of basic concepts in biostatistics and interpretation of study results. This chapter is intended to empower community psychiatrists in research collaborations. In addition to a statistics refresher, the chapter elucidates the history, terminology, and methodological nuances of clinical trial design. It discusses how to address ethical concerns and fulfill ethical requirements for initiating research studies. Finally, it describes notable clinical trials in psychiatry, how community-based centers can be a valuable research resource, and how technology can complement these endeavors in the community.

Pesantren, as an educational institution faces challenges not only come from outside, but also from within the organization. The complex roles of the Kyai as the leader, for instance, needs to be revisited and this paper highlights the history, key roles of the Kyai and the institutional framework of Pesantren.  Arguably, there is a need to challenge the role of the leaders (Kyai) and communication patterns within the Pesantren it can respond to contemporary issues influencing education in Indonesia.  The study suggests the use of restructuring and redesigning for Pesantren. The restructuring includes, but not limited to, transforming leadership role and involving teachers in designing the curriculum. Redesigning encompasses the idea of shared responsibility among teachers and redesigning infrastructure. In short, Pesantren has embedded strengths and resources used to face challenges and accommodate changes in society. The Kyai have significant roles in revisiting those resources. How to Cite : Rahayani, Y. (2017). The term Liberal Islam Network was not well known and was not noticed by people in Indonesia. Moreover, the number of proponents’ is very small, can be counted on the fingers. It presents a new face of Islam which is in the form of non-orthodox, Islam that has compatibility with alteration of era and Islam that has an insight into the future. That is not Islam that has ignorance into the future or that is not outdated. But the ideas promoted by them get a strong reaction from the public, either from the Indonesian religious leaders, or from the Indonesian Moslem intellectuals. Therefore, the term Liberal Islam Network was actually popularized by the opponents.
