Palavras-chave: Estresse hídrico, Capsicum frutescens, produtividade e qualidade do fruto.MARINHO, L. N.WATER DEFICIT APPLIED IN VEGETATIVE AND FLOWERING STAGE OF ‘TABASCO’ PEPPER IN GREENHOUSE2 ABSTRACTThe scarcity of water resources in Brazil has driven the management of demand for more efficient irrigation in farms in order to reduce water consumption and make its use more efficient. The objective of this study was to evaluate the water deficits’ effect at the vegetative and flowering stages of pepper in water use efficiency, yield and quality of pepper cv. 'Tabasco'(Capsicum frutescens) grown in a greenhouse from September 2009 to July 2010. The experiment was conducted as randomized block design with irrigation levels of 40, 60, 80 and 100% of Crop Evapotranspiration (ETc), beginning at vegetative and flowering stages. There was a significant effect of full and deficits irrigation started at vegetative and flowering stages on the fruit number per plant, and the linear model was the best fitted. The average of mass fruit per plant did not vary with the deficit, not even with the start up times. The deficit irrigation affected pepper productivity, yet it was not observed on the physical quality of fruits. The deficit irrigation (40% ETc) beginning at flowering stage allowed savings of up to 49.8% in water consumption in a cycle of 208 days after transplanting. Keywords: water stress, Capsicum frutescens, productivity and fruit quality.

RODRIGUES, T.C.A.; LIMA JÚNIOR, J.A.; DE MELO SOUZA, R.O.R.; OLIVEIRA NETO, C. TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY OF JAPANESE CUCUMBER PRODUCTION SUBMITTED TO DIFFERENT IRRIGATION BLADES     2 ABSTRACT   Water deficiency is usually the factor that most limits the productivity and quality of vegetables. In this scenario, irrigation appears as an important factor of production, besides promoting the maximum productivity and product quality. The objective of this work was to identify an adequate management of drip irrigation, with reduced pan, for the development and production of japanese cucumber in a protected environment. The experiment was carried out at the Experimental Farm of the Rural Federal University of Amazônia, county of Igarapé - Açu - PA. A randomized block design with five treatments and four replicates was used, with slides of 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150% based on the evaporation of a modified pan. It was observed that, in general, both the deficiency and the water excess negatively affected the analyzed variables. The best productivity and growth indexes were found in the 90% and 120% ECA slides and the highest water use efficiency obtained with the lowest irrigation depths. The maximum value was 2842.53 kg ha-1 mm- 1, found in the treatment with 30% ECA.   Keywords: Cucumis sativus L.; drip irrigation; evaporation; water management

Non-uniform blossoming due to deficit irrigation is common in perennial crops such as coffee. It usually leads to uneven ripening of fruits and impairs harvesting efficiency and quality of coffee. The effect of different water deficit periods was evaluated on development stage of flower bud at blossoming stages in coffee plantations. We also evaluated the effect of water deficit on growth, productivity, maturation, and physical quality of the bean. Two identical trials were performed on 19-month-old Coffea arabica cultivars (‘Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144’ and ‘Bourbon Amarelo J9’), from June 2008 to July 2009. Irrigation was suspended and resumed at different times (seven treatments) at the pre-flowering stage using a randomized block design with four replicates. The cultivars reached different levels of deficit for the same period of suspended irrigation. In ‘Catuaí’, 60% of the flower buds opened after the coffee plants were exposed to water deficit from early or late June to early September. In ‘Bourbon’, even the longer water deficit period (06/09 to 09/07) did not induce blossoming greater than 20%. Growth was slightly affected during the water withholding period, but not in the subsequent evaluations in October or January. In both cultivars, drought promoted a higher percentage of ripe cherries at harvest than continuous irrigation, regardless of treatment. In conclusion, although blossoming was not a single concentrated event, especially in ‘Bourbon’, withholding irrigation in the pre-flowering stage contributed to uniform fruit ripening in both Arabica coffee cultivars.

The occurrence of green soybean seed due to forced maturation or premature plant death caused by drought or foliar and/or root diseases has been common in several Brazilian production areas. Physiological quality of seed lots with green seed may have their germination and vigor potentials affected and therefore discarded by the grain industry. The objective of this experiment was to determine the maximum tolerated level of green seed in soybean seed lots, which is information of major importance for seed producers when taking the decision whether to sell these lots. Soybean seed of the cultivars CD 206, produced in Ubirata, Parana, and ‘FMT Tucunare,’ produced in Alto Garças, Mato Grosso, were used in the study. Green seed and yellow seed of both cultivars were mixed in the following proportions: 0%, 3%, 6%, 9%, 12%, 15%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 75% and 100%. Seed quality was evaluated by the germination, accelerated aging, tetrazolium and electrical conductivity tests. The contents of a, b and total chlorophyll in the seed were also determined. A complete randomized block design in a factorial scheme (two cultivars x 12 levels of green seed) was used. Seed quality was negatively affected and chlorophyll contents incremented with the increase in the percentage of green seed. Seed germination, viability and vigor, measured by the accelerated aging test, were not reduced with levels of up to 3% green seed, for both cultivars. Levels above 6% green seed significantly reduced the quality of the seed. The quality of seed lots with 9% or more green seed was significantly reduced to the point that their commercialization is not recommended.

ALVES, L. GROWTH OF ENDIVE USING BRACKISH WATERS UNDER HYDROPONIC CONDITIONS     2 ABSTRACT   Salinity can restrict the exploitation of most crops, making agricultural activity economically unfeasible. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the growth, production and quality of endive (Cichorium endivia L.) submitted to different electrical conductivities of water under hydroponic conditions. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design under five levels of electrical conductivity of waters - ECw (0.34, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 dS m-1). Plant height (PH), number of leaves (NL), fresh weight (SFM) and dry weight of the shoot (SDM), relative production (RP), water use efficiency at 20 and 25 days after transplanting (DAT) and water consumption (WC) in different periods were evaluated. In general, the highest reductions per unit increase of around 5.93 and 8.53%, ECw were observed for the SFM, and for the SDM, 5.42 and 7.77%, respectively at 20 and 25 DAT. At 25 DAT, under the highest salinity (ECw 6.0 dS m-1) the relative production of SFM and SDM were 52.59 and 58.10%. Water with salinity of up to 6.0 dS m-1 can be used in the cultivation of endive in hydroponics, even with reductions in growth and production, but with no depreciating effects on the visual quality of the product.   Keywords: Cichorium endivia L., soilless cultivation, salinity.

Mango is one of the most cultivated tropical fruits worldwide and one of few drought-tolerant plants. Thus, in this study the effect of a sustained deficit irrigation (SDI) strategy on mango yield and quality was assessed with the aim of reducing irrigation water in mango crop. A randomized block design with four treatments was developed: (i) full irrigation (FI), assuring the crop’s water needs, and three levels of SDI receiving 75%, 50%, and 33% of irrigation water (SDI75, SDI50, and SDI33). Yield, morphology, color, titratable acidity (TA), total soluble solids (TSS), organic acids (OA), sugars, minerals, fiber, antioxidant activity (AA), and total phenolic content (TPC) were analyzed. The yield was reduced in SDI conditions (8%, 11%, and 20% for SDI75, SDI50, and SDI33, respectively), but the irrigation water productivity was higher in all SDI regimes. SDI significantly reduced the mango size, with SDI33 generating the smallest mangoes. Peel color significantly changed after 13 days of ripening, with SDI75 being the least ripe. The TA, AA, and citric acid were higher in SDI75, while the TPC and fiber increased in all SDI levels. Consequently, SDI reduced the mango size but increased the functionality of samples, without a severe detrimental effect on the yield.
