This article is devoted to the study of the peculiarities of adaptation of foreign students to the learning process in Russian universities. Adaptation of students to the University is considered as a process of their adaptation to the conditions of the University, to new methods and forms of education, to the norms of the student body and to future professional activities. Foreign students are representatives of different cultures and, in this regard, may differ greatly from Russian young people, so the process of their adaptation has its own characteristics. This point is very important for University teachers to understand and take into account. How the process of adaptation of a foreign student will take place depends on the effectiveness of his/her education at the University, mastering the future profession. The success of adaptation is determined by many objective and subjective factors. The language barrier was identified as one of the main difficulties for foreign students: more than half of the students of the Yakovlev state University have great difficulties communicating in Russian. The process of adaptation of students is influenced by the level of development of adaptability. In the course of the research, the diagnostics of foreign students' adaptability was carried out, for this purpose, the methods "self-Assessment of psychological adaptability" and "Assessment of emotional and activity adaptability" were used. The research was conducted at the I.Ya. Yakovlev Chuvash state pedagogical University. After processing and analyzing the results, the author concludes that the adaptability of most students is at a low level of development. At the same time, there are more girls with low socio-psychological adaptation than boys. In addition, a method was conducted aimed at studying the level of students ' anxiety. The analysis of the data showed that there is a link between the level of anxiety and the level of adaptability: the higher the anxiety indicators, the lower the adaptability indicators. In conclusion, it is concluded that more than half of foreign students experience difficulties related to adaptation to higher education.

A survey was conducted among foreign students studying at Natural Sciences Education Faculty of the I. Yakovlev Chuvash State Pedagogical University located in Cheboksary, the Republic of Chuvashia, Russia. The methodology was used to diagnose the learning motivation of students and a survey was conducted in order to identify socio-pedagogical conditions of students adaptation to the university. Leading motives have been established that determine the desire of foreign students to obtain higher education in Russian cities. The dynamics of student motivation changes has been revealed. It is also found that the assessment of the university and faculty management work by foreign students testifies to the favorable social and pedagogical environment that is developed at the faculty and university. Foreign students poor knowledge of special terminology used for the study of natural sciences is noted. The author identified that it is necessary for foreign students to acquire professional activities of pedagogical education bachelors. Studying at a pedagogical university is demanded by foreign citizens from Central Asia states. Working with foreign students enriches the teaching experience of faculty members. Strengthening multicultural relations, creating conditions conducive to the full self-realization of foreign students personality facilitates the process of their adaptation and integration into the educational environment. Training a prospective bachelor of pedagogical education as a specialist takes place in the context of motivations change throughout the learning process. At the same time, an important point is the confidence in the future profession. In such conditions, educational and cognitive motives become more important and stimulate students to acquire knowledge in the field of their chosen profession.

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) competences have been widely discussed over the past decade. A number of frameworks have been developed, and the Erasmus+ Project “A Rounder Sense of Purpose” (RSP) set out to establish a profound and practical framework of competences to be used in any European context to enable in-service and pre-service educators to demonstrate their competence in ESD. Over the course of two years at the University of Vechta, staff training was provided using the RSP competences model as a guiding framework. Data were collected through a focus group and a self-assessment survey in order to answer the research question, “Which competences do university teachers need in order to work with the concept of ESD in higher education and how can these be developed in a series of staff training workshops?” The results show that all 12 RSP competences are indeed relevant for higher education teaching, but the potential for developing them into a staff training programme is limited. There are multiple trigger points and settings that are beneficial to and necessary for the development of ESD competences. If those conditions are not met there is limited opportunity for applying ESD methods within higher education.

The issue of teaching Russian as a foreign language in a technical university in Russia is considered. The relevance is due both to the increase in the number of foreign students in Russian universities and the need for them to master the Russian language as soon as possible in order to continue their studies in Russian. The aim of the work is to describe the features of mastering Russian scientific vocabulary, the terminology of technical disciplines, in particular, the language of mathematics by foreign students studying at the preparatory department of the Tomsk State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (Building). A linguistic experiment was carried out, when students were offered to write a dictation, replete with scientific vocabulary. The results, as well as violations of pronunciation and spelling of terms have been described, since the main difficulty is precisely the study of the vocabulary of the scientific style of speech. The peculiarities of deviations from the standard were also identified, structured, and described. Options for the implementation of the program for the development of normative writing skills by foreign students were proposed. Rather difficult is the definition of the word boundary, writing letters at the end of a word, the perception of hissing consonants, paired consonants (unvoiced – voiced), soft – hard; determination of the gender of a noun (in most languages of the former Soviet Union there is no category of gender). This requires the necessity of elaborate thinking over the exercise types and their sequence in accordance with students’ needs. This work continues a series of methodical publications, the main aim of which is improving the quality of foreign student education in technical universities of Russia.

The practical significance of the work comes down to disclosing the effectiveness of the case method and the method of projects in the process of forming professional skills. The relevance of this article is determined by modern realities of educational process at the university. The case method and the method of projects make it possible to increase the motivational component of learning and contribute to the development of teachers’ progressive thinking and students’ creative potential, both of which are necessary for professional activities. In this article we also made an attempt at revealing the essence of these methods in the educational process at bachelor’s level. They turned out to be the main methods for the formation of students’ universal and professional competencies. The project method and case method act as an integral factor in the gamification of educational process contributing to the formation of skills of expedient action, activation of thinking, instilling the skills of independent search for solutions in standard and non-standard situations that may come up in the course of professional activity. Students actively and productively master the necessary competencies while revealing their latent potential. The case method and the project method demonstrate great efficiency in improving the quality of personnel training; the specific types of their practical implementation are developed jointly during classes by university teachers and employers’ representatives. The purpose of the article is to determine the methodological potential of the case method and the method of projects in the formation of professional thinking of future philologists and journalists and to consider the possibilities of using case technology and the project method in the process of studying professionally oriented disciplines. The project method is a relevant and effective technology that significantly increases the level of mastery of educational material, the internal motivation of students and their independence. The case method initiates the development of professional thinking, independence, unconventional thinking and creativity. When faced with a formulated problem, students concentrate on finding a solution to the problem and the teacher’s skillful interpretation of the problem directs students to search for non-standard ways. Everything mentioned above leads to the development of integrative thinking and significantly expands students’ capabilities. The practice of working with the case method and the project method in the classroom confirms their effectiveness in the professional development of university students, expanding their professional horizons and the formation of professional thinking.

We describe an intervention that uses computer science (CS) faculty and students to create an inclusive learning environment. Our intervention model assumes that persistence and retention are the result of a match between student motivation and abilities and the university’s social and academic characteristics. This match in turn influences the effective integration of students with the university and, as a result, their persistence and retention (Cabrera, Castaneda, Nora, & Hengstler, 1992; Tinto, 1993). We are currently implementing and evaluating this intervention at Old Dominion University, a research intensive urban university with a culturally diverse student body, and Norfolk State University, an urban and historically black university (HBCU) that primarily emphasizes teaching.

Training of highly qualified specialists is a significant factor for the consistent progress in any branch of economics. Kemerovo State University provides training of specialists for the coal mining region in Russia. Nowadays, the University tends to increase the proportion of foreign students as well. Most of these are students from neighboring countries, such as Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, where raw materials industries, including mining, are developed. Taking into account the multi-ethnic diversity of students at Kemerovo State University, we analyzed the experience and determined the worthwhile forms of organizing independent activity in EFL teaching. Among the forms of independent activity, we introduced independent reading, preparing thematic presentations, written tasks based on video content, and writing thematic essays. Organizing independent work in the educational process, which involves a large number of multinational groups of students, we took into account the following conditions. We considered such particular qualities of contemporary students as their general need in flexible learning environment as well as in self-expression; we took into account their interest in new knowledge and motivation for self- improvement, and at the same time, lack of desire for completing reproductive types of tasks, along with fragmented thinking.

This case study and analysis explores the brief, 17-month tenure of Sam Olens as President of Kennesaw State University, including his controversial appointment, leadership mis-steps, and eventual resignation. The political and social contexts of his tenure, which coincided with political turmoil in the wake of the 2016 election and a subsequent resurgence in progressive activism throughout the country, are considered as contributing factors to his downfall. Likewise, his status as an outsider to higher education at the time of his appointment, his visibility as an outspoken conservative, and his employment being the perceived benefit of political corruption are all noted as a contributing elements to his inability to earn the confidence of the faculty and student body of Kennesaw State University, along with his divisive, misguided, and ill-conceived actions while in his executive position. The role of institutional context in regards to the recent histories of Kennesaw State University, the University System of Georgia, and the state of shared governance in American higher education as a whole are respectively explored in how they set the stage for Olens’ tumultuous and temporary reign at Kennesaw State. A set of recommended courses of action are presented as counterfactual alternatives to the events as they actually occurred, based on higher education leadership literature.

The growth of conflicts in a changing world makes conflict resolution competence an important component of entrepreneurial competencies. Higher education should empower students to effectively prevent and resolve conflicts. The problem of assessing the educational process in the field of conflict resolution training and the result of this training is discussed in this article. The authors cite the results of an empirical study, the purpose of which was to determine the needs of students of the State University (Chelyabinsk, Russia) with regards to conflict management preparation. The survey relied on an analysis of the self-assessment of students´ own skills and commitment to the principles of tolerance, an assessment of the educational process, and the need to increase their own conflict management competence. 152 students of the State University took part in the survey, of which 63 were male and 89 female. The Likert scale was used. The results of the study showed that students assess the level of their own conflict resolution competence as high, as do they the educational process at the university. The limitations of the study are discussed at the end of the article.
