ABSTRACT Objectives: to translate, adapt cross-culturally and validate into Brazilian Portuguese the following instrument: "Self-assessment of communication skills and professionalism in residents" for the nursing professional, and to determine if personal characteristics and performance of the nurse interfere in the self-assessment about professionalism and interpersonal communication. Method: quantitative study. Results: the sample consisted of 110 nurses with mean age of 32 years old (± 7.3), most of them were women (n = 80; 72.7%). The internal consistency of the scale "Autoavaliação sobre profissionalismo e comunicação interpessoal entre enfermeiro e paciente" presented moderate and satisfactory reliability (α=0,712). Factorial analysis identified four factors: Interpersonal Skills, Exchange of Information, Honesty in the Relationship and Professionalism. Conclusion: the instrument is valid and reliable in Portuguese and for Brazilian culture. Interpersonal Skills changed with gender and marital status. Ability to exchange information was influenced by gender and working sector. Self-assessment of professionalism changed with marital status.

The present study traces the dynamics of personal characteristics in youth and the manifested neurotic symptoms in the training process. These facts are the reason for the low levels of school results in the context of the existing theoretical statements of the problem and the empirical research conducted among the trained teenagers. We suggest that the indicators of neurotic symptomatology in youth – aggression, anxiety, and neuroticism, are the most demonstrated, compared to the other studied indicators of neurotic symptomatology. Studies have proved that there is a difference in the act of neurotic symptoms when tested in different situations, both in terms of expression and content. At the beginning of the school year, neurotic symptoms, more demonstrated in some aspects of aggressiveness, while at the end of school year, psychotism is more demonstrated. The presented summarized results indicate that at the beginning of the school year, neurotic symptoms are strongly associated with aggression. There is a tendency towards a lower level of social responsiveness, both in the self-assessment of real behavior and in the ideal “I”-image of students in the last year of their studies. The neurotic symptomatology, more demonstrated due to specific conditions in the life of young people and in relation to the characteristics of age.

Communication and social skills are becoming increasingly valuable in the 21st century. Despite increasing awareness of the importance of communication skills in modern healthcare practice, there is a lack of research that addresses this issue. The aim of this research is to assess the communication skills of healthcare professionals working in Lithuanian healthcare institutions. Respondents (n=1154) were asked to assess their own communication skills using the Interpersonal Communication Skills Inventory. The research revealed that sending clear message skills were the strongest and giving/getting feedback skills were the lowest for most of the respondents, including physicians, head nurses, nurse, nurse assistants, and other personnel. The strongest aspects were that respondents can talk to other people and others seemed to be interested and attentive when healthcare specialists were talking because in conversation they were trying to talk about things of interest to both them and the other persons. The respondents could recognize as well how others were reacting to what they were saying. However, they did not always care how other person feels about the point they try to make. Emotional interaction skills were the lowest for most of the respondents in this study. They saw a tendency to change the subject when other person’s feelings enter into the discussion and it was difficult for them to think when they were angry with someone. It was summarized that talking, listening, and emotional interaction skills of the respondents are the areas that need more consistent attention, and giving / getting feedback is the skill that needs much improvement.

Abstract Introduction: In nursing, the communication between the nurse and the child is the core of child care. Some barriers can affect the nurse-patient relationship to have proper communication skills for child care. Objective: This study aimed to examine the correlation between communication skills and early maladaptive schemas in nurses working in pediatric wards. Materials and Methods: This is an analytical and correlational study. The participants were 178 nurses working in a children’s hospital in Rasht City, Iran in 2016. The data collection tool was a three-part questionnaire: A demographic form, the interpersonal communication skills scale (ASMA), and the Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form (YSQ-SF). The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Friedman and Spearman tests. Results: The majority of nurses were younger than 30 years (80.8%), had a bachelor’s degree in nursing (89.0%), were married (65.1%), had children (54.8%), were living in urban areas (95.2%), had employment status (63.3%) and less than 15 years of work experience (46.5%). The highest mean scores of ASMA (44.12±0.53) and YSQ-SF tools (2.65±1.04) were related to general communication skills and then disconnection and rejection, respectively. The results of the Spearman correlation test showed that the overall ASMA score had significant negative correlations with early maladaptive schemas of impaired autonomy and performance (r= -0.283), impaired limits (r= -0.421), other-directedness (r= -0.303), and disconnection and rejection (r= -0.302) (P=0.0001). Conclusion: Nurses who have a higher level of early maladaptive schemas showed poorer communication skills. Examining maladaptive schemas in nurses may provide appropriate strategies to improve their communication skills.

AbstractIntroductionInterpersonal communication skills are essential to the healthcare practitioner aiding in high quality, effective and safe clinical practice. Effective communication exerts a positive influence on the patient’s physical and emotional status resulting in better patient outcomes and satisfaction. By identifying strengths and weaknesses, self-assessment of interpersonal communication skills can be used as an intervention tool to inform future curriculum renewal. The objective of this study was to identify paramedic students’ perceptions of their interpersonal communication competence.MethodsSecond year paramedic students from Monash University (Victoria) were invited to participate in a survey that asked them to record perceptions of their interpersonal communication skills using the Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale (ICCS). The ICCS is a 30-item unipolar questionnaire using a Likert scale ranging from 1 (almost never) to 5 (almost always). Mean and standard deviations (SD) were used to report results.ResultsFifty-six second year paramedic students participated in the study. Participants were predominantly aged less than 25 years (85.7%) and male n=36 (64.3%). Students reported ‘often’ or ‘almost always’ for the items: ‘I put myself in others’ shoes’, n=46 (82%), mean=3.98 (SD 0.59); and, ‘I let others know that I understand what they say’, n=45 (80%), mean=3.96 (SD 0.66). Students reported ‘sometimes’, ‘often’ or ‘almost always’, for the items: ‘I have trouble convincing others to do what I want them to do’, n=55 (98%), mean=3.5 (SD 0.63); and, ‘My mind wanders during conversations’, n=41 (73%), mean=3.05 (SD 0.88).ConclusionPreliminary results suggest that student paramedics self-report their interpersonal communication skills highly apart from areas related to assertiveness and listening skills. These results could be indicative of student age, personality or experience level and warrant further research with larger sample sizes.

AbstractThe concept of communication is a notorious one but at the same time, difficult to define precisely. However, many researchers recognize a number of attributes as easy to define and interpret. In this paper we will carry out a detailed analysis of each of these components of the basic model of communication (Hargie, O., Dickson, D. 2004, Dickson, 2001, Hargie and Tourish, 1999, Dickson et al., 1997). Interpersonal communication is a transactional, intentional, multidimensional, irreversible and (possibly) inevitable process. It is strictly determined by factors such as the situational context of the person, cognitive, affective or temporal elements. The participants in the communication carry and reflect the whole personal “baggage”, of which the accumulated knowledge and experiences, motives, interests, values, emotions, attitudes, expectations and personal dispositions are part. To these are added the self-image, the beliefs about one’s own abilities to succeed (self-efficacy). All these elements will determine the kind of meetings planned, the objectives selected, the persistence in achieving them, as well as the anticipation of possible rewards. Effective interpersonal involvement can be interpreted in terms of concepts such as: person-context, goals, mediation processes, responses, feedback and perception. We can think of spatial, temporal, relational and sometimes organizational frameworks in which the communication process is incorporated. The personal characteristics of the participants, together with the specifics of the situation, act to model the interaction. Also, the objectives pursued are determined by personal and situational factors. The plans and strategies for their realization come from the mediation processes and the strategy adopted accordingly, is reflected in the manifested answers, in behavioral and decision choices.

Background: Rehearsal simulations are patient-specific case-matched tasks performed immediately prior to the actual task, with the objective of improving performance. Objective: How does rehearsal simulation for antenatal consults impact how residents learn to engage in difficult conversations with families? Study Design: Residents in the NICU performed case-matched video recorded rehearsal simulations, followed by actual antenatal consults. The purpose of antenatal consults is to prepare parents expecting a complication with their baby before birth. Questionnaires assessed changes in resident confidence and self-assessment of communication skills. Residents were interviewed for qualitative data to explore the overall impact of rehearsal simulation on their learning and performance. Results: Thirteen residents participated. Rehearsal simulation improved confidence with a more organized approach of medical content and better communication techniques, allowing for a shift of focus from a checklist approach to building rapport and displaying empathy. Conclusions: While rehearsal simulation did not prepare residents for unexpected parent responses, trainees’ increased confidence with medical content organization and communication techniques created space for reflection-in-action and compassionate approaches.
