ABSTRACT: To evaluate inclusion levels and residual effects of diets containing yeast extract (YE) plus blood plasma (BP) on the performance of 36 to 60-days old piglets, 105 piglets were used (8.75±0.72kg), and they were distributed under a randomized block experimental design with five treatments (control - 2.0% BP; 1.0% BP plus 0.0, 1.0, 2.0, or 3.0% YE), seven repetitions, and three animals per experimental unit. Piglets were given experimental diets from 36 to 49 days of age. From 50 to 60 day of age, all piglets received the same diet. No effects from treatments (P>0.10) were observed on the performance variables from 36 to 49 day of age. From 50 to 60 day of age, an effect was observed from YE levels on the daily feed consumption (P<0.03), daily weight gain (p<0.01), and final weight (P<0.06), which increased quadratically up to 1.67, 1.67, and 1.55% YE levels, respectively. Piglets which were fed with the diet containing 1.0% BP + 2.0% YE were observed to have better feed conversion ratios (P<0.01) as compared to the control diet (2.0% BP). As it provides a better residual effect, the inclusion of 1.67% yeast extract may replace 50% of blood plasma in 36 to 49-days old piglet diets.

ABSTRACT: Physical form effect of the pre-starter diet supplied during the post-weaning period from 21 to 41 days of age on diet digestibility and animal performance in terms of zootechnical performances of light-weight (5.82kg) and heavy-weight weaning piglets (6.32kg) was evaluated, as well as the residual effects of the treatments until slaughter. Forty-eight female pigs at 21 days of age were evaluated. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2x2 factorial scheme (meal/pelleted diet vs. light-weight/heavy-weight piglets), with six replicates for the nursery phase and 12 replicates for the growing-finishing phases. Animals received the experimental diet from 21 to 41 days of age. Data were analyzed with ANOVA, setting the significance in 5%. Feeding with the pelleted diet resulted in a 39% greater daily weight gain and a 28% greater feed conversion rate for piglets from weaning to 40 days of age. Pelleting also resulted in a decrease in feed wastage during the first week after weaning (9.15% for meal diet vs. 1.68% for pelleted diet) and; consequently, the results showed an increase in feed consumption. Digestible energy of the pelleted diet (3,626kcal kg-1) was greater than that of the meal diet (3,424kcal kg-1). The physical form improved the performance of weaning pigs and the digestibility of the pre-starter diet, but there wasn't residual effect of the physical form and the weight of a piglet at weaning on live weight at slaughter.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance, the energy and nutrient balance and economic viability of production of growing pigs fed diets with reduced levels and phytase. In experiment 1, 60 barrows and gilts (initial weight 25 ± 1.72 kg) were housed in a randomized block design with three diets, ten replicates and two animals per experimental unit (one male and one female). One of the diets was formulated with a reduced level with phytase and evaluated in comparison to a positive-control diet that was formulated according to the nutritional recommendations for animals of this breed, and a negative-control diet without phytase. The different diets did not affect feed intake, but the diet with phytase promoted better final weight, daily weight gain and feed conversion, although it did not differ from the positive control diet. In experiment 2, 27 barrows (initial weight 49 ± 3.67 kg) were housed in random blocks with three diets and nine replicates with experimental plot represented by one animal. The diets did not affect the balance of energy and nutrients but had a significant effect on the efficiency of utilization of calcium and phosphorus, which was the lowest in animals that received the positive-control diet. Economic viability improved when nutrients were reduced and phytase was added in the ration. The addition of phytase (500 ftu/kg) in rations formulated with nutritional levels reduced for growing swines improves rearing productivity and it is economical viable.

There are well documented complications associated with the continuous use of antibiotics in the poultry industry. Over the past few decades, probiotics have emerged as viable alternatives to antibiotics; however, most of these candidate probiotic microorganisms have not been fully evaluated for their effectiveness as potential probiotics for poultry. Recent evaluation of a metagenome of broiler chickens in our laboratory revealed a prevalence of Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) and Actinobacteria class of bacteria in their gastrointestinal tract. In this study Lactobacillus reuteri and Streptomyces coelicolor (S. coelicolor) were selected as probiotic bacteria, encapsulated, and added into broiler feed at a concentration of 100 mg/kg of feed. In an 8-week study, 240 one day-old chicks were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments. Three dietary treatments contained two probiotic bacteria in three different proportions (L. reuteri and S. coelicolor individually at 100 ppm, and mixture of L. reuteri and S. coelicolor at 50 ppm each). The fourth treatment had no probiotic bacteria and it functioned as the control diet. L. reuteri and S. coelicolor were added to the feed by using wheat middlings as a carrier at a concentration of 100 ppm (100 mg/kg). Chickens fed diets containing L. reuteri and S. coelicolor mixture showed 2% improvement in body weight gain, 7% decrease in feed consumption, and 6–7% decrease in feed conversion ratios. This research suggests that L. reuteri and S. coelicolor have the potential to constitute probiotics in chickens combined or separately, depending on the desired selection of performance index.

Ninety barrow piglets weaned at 21 days old were used to evaluate the effects of guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) supplementation on their performance and blood creatinine and creatine kinase (CK) levels during the nursery phase (21 to 63 days old). The piglets were distributed in a randomized block design with five treatments (0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20% GAA inclusion), six repetitions, and three animals per repetition. The experimental rations were formulated to meet the nutritional requirements for the phases of 21 to 32, 33 to 42 and 43 to 63 days of age. The experimental diets and water were offered ad libitum throughout the experimental period. At 42 and 63 days old, blood was collected from one animal in each experimental unit for creatinine and creatine kinase analysis. The analysed variables were daily weight gain (DFG), daily feed intake (DFI), and feed conversion (FC) in the 21 to 42 days old and 21 to 63 days old of the nursery phase. All variables were subjected to analysis of variance and regression analysis. We adopted ? = 0.05, and considered a trend to be present when ? was between 0.05 and 0.10. In the pre-initial period (21 to 42 days old), there was an increasing trend in daily weight (P = 0.069), which increased to the level of 0.97% of GAA inclusion. The DFI and FC were not significantly affected by the addition of different GAA levels in the diet. Creatinine levels in the blood at 42 and 63 days old were not significantly influenced by the treatments. The level of CK at 42 days old showed an increasing trend (P = 0.077) that occurred quadratically to the level of 0.085% of GAA inclusion, with no significant difference for this variable at 63 days old. The use of GAA did not promote improvements in performance or blood creatinine and CK levels in piglets in the nursery phase.

A completely randomized design (CRD) was used with a total of 160 day-old commercial broiler chicks which were randomly assigned to four treatment groups with five replicates into 20 pens and brooded. Feed and water were provided ad libitum. From day old chick to 21 day, the broiler chicks were fed Diet 1 (5% fish meal and 25% soybean meal, 1: 5), Diet 2 (3% fish meal and 30% soybean meal, 1: 10) was served as control diet, Diet 3 (2% fish meal and 30% soybean meal, 1: 15) and Diet 4 (1.5% fish meal and 30% soybean meal, 1: 20). From day 22 onwards, the broiler chicks were fed finisher diet, Diet 1 (5% fish meal and 25% soybean meal, 1: 5), Diet 2 (2.6% fish meal and 26% soybean meal, 1: 10, serve as control diet, Diet 3 (1.8% fish meal and 27% soybean meal, 1: 15) and Diet 4 (1.3% fish meal and 26% soybean meal, 1: 20). Weekly performances and mortality are measured. By feeding FS5 diet (5% fish meal and 25% soybean meal), the heavier body weight, increased feed consumption and feed conversion ratio of broiler chicks was observed when compared to that of other treatment groups. Conclusively, it is obvious that the ratio of dietary fish meal to soybean meal 1: 5 (FS5) improved body weight but the lower feed efficiency of this diet should be considered in economical point of view.

Fourteen protein systems coded by 15 structural loci were typed by horizontal electrophoresis to determine possible associations betweem the protein phenotypes and productive traits in Landrace (N=109), Largo White (N= 116) and Duroe (N=57) pigs, reared in Southern Brazil. Signiticant associations between protein phenotypes and production traits were detected. The most consistent interaction were observed between two protein systems (phosphogluconate dehydrogenase - Pgd and Hemopexin -Hpx) and at least one of the four performance variables considered. In Duroc breed, the Pgd phenotypes were associated with daily weight gain (P < 0.01), feed conversion ratio (P < 0.01) and selection index (P < 0.001), while in Landrace significant associations were observed only with feed convertion ratio (P < 0.05). The Hpx phenotypes were associated with daily weight gain (P < 0.05) and backfat thickness (P < 0.05) in Large White and with this last variable (P < 0.01) and selection index (P < 0.05) in Duroc pigs. Since these results had not been reported previously, turther studies are need to confirm these associations.

Salmonella is the leading cause of bacterial foodborne zoonoses in humans. Thus, the development of strategies to control bacterial pathogens in poultry is essential. Peanut skins, a considerable waste by-product of the peanut industry is discarded and of little economic value. However, peanut skins contain polyphenolic compounds identified that have antimicrobial properties. Hence, we aim to investigate the use of peanut skins as an antibacterial feed additive in the diets of broilers to prevent the proliferation of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE). One hundred sixty male hatchlings (Ross 308) were randomly assigned to, (1) PS: peanut skin diet without SE inoculation (2) PSSE: peanut skin diet and SE inoculation 3) CON: control diet without SE inoculation (4) CONSE: control diet with SE inoculation. Feed intake and body weights were determined at week 0 and 5. On days 10 and 24 post hatch, 3 birds/pen (24 total) from each treatment group were euthanized and the liver, spleen, small intestine, and ceca were collected. The weights of the liver, spleen and ceca were recorded. Organ invasion was determined by counting SE colonies. Each pen served as an experimental unit and was analyzed using a t-test. Performance data was analyzed in a completely randomized design using a general linear mixed model to evaluate differences. There were no significant differences ( P &gt; 0.05) in weekly average pen body weight, total feed consumption, bird weight gain and feed conversion ratio between the treatment groups. There were no significant differences in SE CFU/g for fecal, litter or feed between treatment groups CONSE and PSSE. However, for both fecal and litter, the PSSE treatment group tended (P ≤0.1) to have a lower Salmonella CFU/g compared to the CONSE treatment group. The results indicate that peanut skins may have potential application as an antimicrobial feed additive to reduce the transmission or proliferation of SE in poultry environments or flocks.

Abstract Prebiotics has been used in sow diets as an alternative to minimize the impacts of hyperprolificity, such as variability coefficient and poor litter performance. However, the additive inclusion is generally high and costly. The objective of this study was to verify the effect of the low inclusion of yeast bioactive compounds (YBC), in gestation and lactation diets, on sows reproductive performance. Five hundred sows were assigned in two treatments in a block design considering parity as a random factor, using each sow as an experimental unit with for gestation (n = 500) and lactation period (n = 80). The treatments were control diet (CON) and diet with 0.036% of YBC inclusion (YBC). Back fat thickness was measured at 30 and 70 days of gestation, at farrowing day, at 14 days of lactation and weaning day. Sows were weighted at the farrowing barn entry day and at weaning. The corporal mobilization was accessed following the equation: Body change = Weight at weaning - [Weight at lactation entry - (Litter weight at birth + Placenta weight)]. After cross-fostering and at weaning the litters were weighed to calculate the daily weight gain. Differences were considered significant when p ≤ 0.05 and tendencies were considered when p > 0.05 and p < 0.10. No difference was found regarding the reproductive performance (total born, born alive, mummified and stillborns) (P > 0.05). YBC tended to have greater litter final weight than CON group, 59.08 kg versus 56.70 kg (P = 0.057). Backfat thickness tended to be lower (5.20%) in YBC (16.03 mm) than CON group (16.91 mm) during gestation period (P = 0.075). However, at weaning day no difference for backfat thickness was found between treatments (P > 0.05). YBC had lower loss weight during lactation than CON group, 0.0 kg versus 4.99 kg, respectively (P = 0.011). Low inclusion of YBC enhances litter performance and improves body condition of lactating sows.

The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of heat stress on Brahman Cross cattle performance which is maintained by feedlot with three treatments (non using fan, blower fan and HVLS fan) using split plot design, Giving the fan is treated as the main plot factor, while the cattle is treated as a plot factor factor (sub plot factor). Knowing the financial value of each treatment: feed consumption, daily weight gain, feed conversion, feed cost, cost per gain of Brahman, Belmont red and Charolais is fattened in feedlot. The result showed that using HVLS fan is most effective to cattle performance than blower fan and non using fan for belmont red and charolais cattle.

Abstrak. Penggunaan konsentrat komersial (683) untuk memacu pertambahan berat badan kambing kacang yang diberi pakan dasar hijauan campuran telah dilakukan di Laboratorium Ilmu dan Teknologi Ternak Potong Program Studi Peternakan Fakultas Pertanian Universitas Syiah Kuala Banda Aceh. pada bulan Agustus sampai dengan Oktober 2017. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pertambahan berat badan harian pada kambing kacang jantan yang diberikan kosentrat komersial (683) dan hijauan campuran. Rancangan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Rancangan Bujur Sangkar Latin (RBSL) yaitu dengan menggunakan empat perlakuan dan empat periode (ulangan). Masing-masing perlakuan adalah pelakuan A (0% pellet 683) perlakuan B (20% pellet 683), perlakuan C (40% pellet 683), dan pelakuan D (60% pellet 683). Data penelitian yang diperoleh dianalisis menggunakan ANOVA (Analysis of Variance). Parameter yang diamati adalah : Pertambahan berat badan, Konsumsi pakan, Konversi pakan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan perbedaan yang sangat nyata (P0.01) terhadap konsumsi ransum. Namun terjadi perbedaan yang tidak nyata (P0,05) pada parameter pertambahan berat badan dan efesiensi ransum. Use of Commercial Concentrates (683) to Stimulate Weight Loss of Goat kacang Provided with Basic Mixed Forage FeedAbstract. The use of commercial concentrate 683 to accelerate the growth of kacang goat fed with mixed forage has been conducted at the Laboratory of Technology and Livestock Production, the Faculty of Agriculture, Syiah Kuala University of Banda Aceh. from August to October 2017. The objective of this study was to determine the daily weight gain in kacang goat given commercial concentrate (683) and mixed green. The design used in this study was Latin Square Design (RBSL) wash four treatments and four periods (replication). The treatment ware A (0% pellet 683) B (20% pellet 683), C (40% pellet 683), and D (60% pellet 683). The data obtained were analyzed using ANOVA (Analysis of Variance). Parameters observed were: Weight gain, Feed consumption, Feed conversion. The results showed a significant difference on (P 0.01) to the consumption of rations. However, the difference was not significant (P 0.05) on the parameter of weight gain and ration efficiency.
