Abstract: The objective of this work was to characterize the productive and qualitative performances of 11 clones of 'Bordô' grape (Vitis labrusca) destined to wine and juice production, in the region of Vale do Rio do Peixe, in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The experiment was carried out in the 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2015 crop seasons. The analyzed yield components were: number of clusters per vine, yield, cluster weight, accumulated yield, and alternate bearing index. The analyzed morphological characteristics of clusters were: number of berries per cluster, berry diameter, cluster compactness index, and cluster length. In order to assess grape quality, the following parameters were analyzed: soluble solids (SS), pH, titratable acidity (TA), SS/TA ratio, total anthocyanins, and total polyphenols. The 'Bordô' grape clones 13 and 16 ('Paco' and 'Bocaina') are the most suitable ones for cultivation in the wine producing region of Vale do Rio do Peixe, as they show the highest yields, production stability, and grapes with adequate quality for wine and juice elaboration.

Aim: The interaction of mechanized pruning systems and soil organic amendment can increase vine productivity. However, since the increase in productivity may affect grape composition, this study aimed to understand the effects of the interaction between these two practices.Methods and materials: Two field trials were implemented in Shiraz vineyards in two different wine regions. Mechanical hedge pruning was compared with hand spur pruning and four different organic amendments were tested: biochar, municipal solid waste compost, cattle manure and sewage sludge.Results: Mechanical pruning reduced the total soluble solids (TSS) and pH of the grapes, but had no effects on the other variables. Organic amendments also reduced TSS, especially sewage sludge, and tended to reduce total anthocyanins and total phenols. The effect of the interaction between both factors on grape composition was never significant. A negative relationship between yield and TSS was observed, while titratable acidity had no relationship with yield. Total anthocyanins were also negatively related to yield. A positive relation between TSS and total anthocyanins was also observed.Conclusions: The results show that the combination of mechanical pruning and soil organic amendment is a powerful tool for increasing productivity, but it has some effects on grape composition.Significance and impact of study: The reduction in some fruit composition variables showed that, while mechanical pruning does not significantly affect grape composition, the choice of type and amount of organic amendment will depend on the destination of the grapes.

Hyperspectral imaging offers enormous potential for measuring grape composition with a high degree of representativity, allowing all exposed grapes from the cluster to be examined non-destructively. On-the-go hyperspectral images were acquired using a push broom hyperspectral camera (400–100 nm) that was mounted in the front part of a motorized platform moving at 5 km/h in a commercial Tempranillo vineyard in La Rioja, Spain. Measurements were collected on three dates during grape ripening in 2018 on the east side of the canopy, which was defoliated in the basal fruiting zone. A total of 144 grape clusters were measured for Total soluble solids (TSS), Titratable acidity (TA), pH, Tartaric and Malic acid, Anthocyanins and Total polyphenols, using standard wet chemistry reference methods, throughout the entire experiment. Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression was used to build calibration, cross validation and prediction models for the grape composition parameters. The best performances returned determination coefficients values of external validation (R2p) of 0.82 for TSS, 0.81 for Titratable acidity, 0.61 for pH, 0.62 for Tartaric acid, 0.84 for Malic acid, 0.88 for Anthocyanins and 0.55 for Total polyphenols. The promising results exposed in this work disclosed a notable methodology on-the-go for the non-destructive, in-field assessment of grape quality composition parameters along the ripening period.

Pineapple is a food rich in vitamins, antioxidants and bromelain, but because it has high water content it becomes a highly perishable fruit. Hibiscus is a plant with flowers rich in phytochemicals that can be used as an ingredient to add value to processed products. The objective of this work was to prepare mixed jams using pineapple with hibiscus extract at different concentrations and to characterize the physicochemical properties of the jams produced. Experimental design was completely randomized with four replicates. The treatments consisted of three concentration levels of hibiscus extract (5, 10 and 15%) in pineapple jelly (50:50). Analyzed physical-chemical characteristics were: water content, water activity, ash, lipids, total sugars, reducing and non-reducing sugars, vitamin C, total titratable acidity, pH and total soluble solids. It was found that increasing concentrations of hibiscus in the formulations significantly influenced resulting jam composition. Increasing hibiscus concentration reduced the total sugars content and increased ascorbic acid content, acidity, total soluble solids and ash, as well as total anthocyanins and flavonoids contents. Among the jams produced, the formulation with 15% hibiscus was distinguished by its high content of ascorbic acid, flavonoids and anthocyanins. The addition of hibiscus to pineapple jelly improves the nutritional and functional value of the resulting jams, so it can be considered a high potential ingredient for this type of product.

Raspberry production represents an alternative for farmers in the temperate zones of Mexico. Due to the environmental impact caused by conventional agriculture, there is currently greater demand for organic food in the national and international market. To achieve this need, new fertilization techniques based on organic amendments are being tested. In the present study, yields and quality were evaluated over a 3-year period (2015, 2016 and 2017) as well as the phytochemical compounds of the production in 2017, with management of organic versus conventional fertilization of raspberry crop in open field in Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, Mexico. During the three years of study, the conventional fertilization system obtained higher yields, compared to the organic one, with values of 2,698 and 2,351 g per linear meter in 2015, 2,423 and 1,301 g per linear meter in 2016 and the data for 2017 were 3,077 and 2,550 g per linear meter, respectively. Regarding quality, the results showed no statistical differences between the two systems of production about colour, firmness, total soluble solids, titratable acidity and pH of the fruit. Differently the composition of phytochemicals, phenols, flavonoids, total anthocyanins and antioxidant capacity was better under the organic management. In conclusion, the conventional system showed higher yields, the quality of the fruits was not different between the two systems, while the levels of phytochemicals were higher with the organic farming. Therefore, it is important to continue the research in order to improve soil fertility and achieve higher yields under the organic management.

Fruits from twelve plum cultivars (Prunus domestica L.), were analyzed in terms of physical and chemical characteristics. The fruits trees were grown in a trial at University of Craiova - Fruit Growing Research Station (SCDP) Valcea, which is located in Bujoreni, an important Romanian plum production area. Fruits were picked at harvest maturity. Several analyzes were performed, such as fruit linear dimensions, size index, fruit weight, dry matter, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, total anthocyanins, malic, tartaric and citric acids content. The best features in terms of physical and chemical properties proved to be found in ‘Alina’, ‘Alutus’, ‘Tuleu Timpuriu’, ‘Oltenal’ and ‘Renclod Althan’.

Pineapple is commonly planted in monoculture systems. It is a long-cycle crop that takes time to monetize, which hinders its cropping by small farmers. The objective of this work was to evaluate the production and quality of pineapple with short-cycle crops, at the beginning of the growing period, as an alternative for family farming in the state of Tocantins. The experimental design was randomized complete block with three treatments and four replications. The pineapple was intercropped with rice and cowpea. The treatments consisted of T1: pineapple + rice; T2: pineapple + cowpea and T3: pineapple in monoculture. The evaluated variables of the pineapple fruit were pH, soluble solids, titratable acidity, yield, fruit mass, fruit length with crown, fruit length without crown and fruit circumference. For the rice and cowpea, the yield and the Area Equivalence Index (AEI) were determined. The cropping system did not influence the pineapple fruits quality. The pineapple yielded less. Cowpea yielded more when intercropped with pineapple. The AEI of the pineapple + rice intercropping was 2.07, being feasible for increasing the use of the area by 100%. The AEI of the pineapple + cowpea intercropping was 2.48, being feasible as it increased the use of the area by 148%. The results obtained showed that it is possible to intercrop pineapple with rice or cowpea at the beginning of pineapple cultivation, and it can be a viable alternative for family farming.

The study’s objective was to evaluate the influence of thinning on the quality and regularity of yield of 'Regina' cherries grown on a dwarf Gisela 5 rootstock. The experiments were conducted in the years 2009-2012 in Western Poland. Trees were thinned using a chemical agent, ammonium thiosulphate (ATS) at doses of 20g ATS × L-1, 30g ATS × L-1 and 40g ATS × L-1, and by hand, and the results of chemical and hand thinning were compared with those obtained for unthinned trees. The course of weather conditions in winter and during flowering had a significant impact on yield. Chemical thinning is known to be an effective method to regulate fruiting of pome trees, but it can also be successful if applied to cherry trees, as reflected by the alternate bearing index, which was the lowest after applying ATS at a dose of 40g. ATS treatment improved fruit quality in full crop years. Thinning resulted in, among other things, larger and darker fruit and higher content of total soluble solids and titratable acidity. Treatment with 40g ATS × L-1 significantly stimulated the vegetative growth of trees.

Commonly found in Mato-grossense Cerrado, the pequi tree (Caryocar brasiliense Camb) produces a fruit called pequi, which is sold and consumed by the population where it is produced, in cream, candies, ice creams or in natura, as a typical regional side dish. It is a highly nutritious fruit and hence necessary to the population. The aim of this study was to proceed with the biometric and physical-chemical analysis of pequis collected in the north of the state of Mato Grosso, to contribute with a database to help identify good genoptypes for commercial and industry usage, to build a germplasm bank. Whole fruits from seven different matrixes of Caryocar brasiliense Camb were randomly collected in União do Sul-MT, seasons 2017 and 2019. The mass, transverse diameter, longitudinal diameter, volume and sphericity of fruits and pyrenes have been determined, as well as the number of pyrenes per fruit and pulp mass. The pulp was analyzed for its moisture, pH, total titratable acidity and soluble solids contents. The physical evaluation for fruits and pyrenes show that the observed matrixes had statistically significant differences in all parameters tested, especially on mass, volume and pulp mass. The pequis from matrix 7 have the best results for whole fruit and pyrenes mass, and also for pulp mass and pulp mass/whole fuit ratio. The results for moisture and physical-chemical analysis show that the observed matrixes presented statistically significant differences. The findings are similar to the ones detected in studies with pequis in other regions. Based on the results obtained, the fruits that have been analyzed may be regarded as of interest for business and industry, therefore may be considered to build a germplasm bank.

Given that strawberries are very short-lived and easily perishable, extending their shelf life would be very cost effective. Strawberries of the Arosa cultivar were treated with various concentrations of 1-methyl­cyclopropene (0.050, 0.100, 0.500 ppm) in order to determine the optimal concentration for extending their storage life. Two different treatment conditions were used: treatment for 2 h at 20°C and treatment for 20h at 4°C. Total phenols content, total anthocyanins, total soluble solids, fruit firmness, titratable acidity, pH and weght loss were monitored for 11 days of storage in the cold room at 3oC. The best results were achieved by treatment with 0.1 ppm 1-methylcyclopropene for 2 h at 20°C.

Fresh-market blackberries (Rubus subgenus Rubus Watson) have a growing global market, with continued release of cultivars to meet demand for consumer-quality fruit. The release of primocane-fruiting blackberry plants that produce crops on both floricanes and primocanes has expanded blackberry production. This study investigated the physiochemical attributes of fresh-market blackberries harvested from two cane types (floricane and primocane) from four primocane genotypes (APF-238, APF-268, ‘Prime-Ark® 45’, and ‘Prime-Ark® Traveler’) grown at the University of Arkansas Fruit Research Station, Clarksville in 2015 and 2016. Year-to-year differences were evident as blackberries harvested in 2016 were smaller (6 g) and less acidic (0.7% titratable acidity) than berries harvested in 2015 (8 g berries with 0.9% titratable acidity); however, soluble solids in each year were similar (≈10.2%). Differences in genotypes were also a factor. ‘Prime-Ark® Traveler’ (2015) and APF-268 (2016) had the highest berry firmness (7.8–8.3 N). In both years, APF-238 had the lowest firmness (5.7–6.0 N), highest isocitric acid (0.8–1.1 g/100 g), and highest total anthocyanins (239–353 mg/100 g). Floricane fruit harvested from ‘Prime-Ark® Traveler’ had the highest berry weights (8.3–10.4 g) in both years. Blackberries harvested from primocanes were wider (21.3–22.9 mm), had higher soluble solids (11.6% to 12.6%), and had lower titratable acidity (0.6%) when compared with floricane fruit in both years. Major year-to-year differences were found for several variables in this study, indicating that environmental effects can be substantial and growers should be aware of this influence on berries harvested from the different cane types. Evaluation of quality properties of floricane and primocane fruit of primocane plants in other locations would be valuable, particularly from areas where commercial blackberry production is established.
