Abstract The effect of four diets on the performance of Dorper lambs that were artificially mix-infected with 1000 infective larvae (L3) of Haemonchus contortus and 1000 L3 of Trichostrongylus colubriformis every three days for 12 weeks was evaluated. For each diet, one infected group (n = 7) and one control group (n = 4) were set up. The four diets contained the following proportions of hay (H) and concentrate (C): Diet 1 - 100%H; Diet 2 - 75%H:25%C; Diet 3 - 50%H:50%C; Diet 4 - 25%H:75. All the infected groups showed decreases in mean packed cell volume (PCV) and total plasma protein, especially the Diet 1-infected, which was also the group with the highest fecal egg count. The diets and infection had significant effects (P < 0.05) on daily body weight gain (DBWG), cold carcass weight and daily food consumption. The control and infected groups had mean DBWG (in kg), respectively, of 0.048 and 0.025 with Diet 1; 0.082 and 0.067 with Diet 2; 0.188 and 0.189 with Diet 3; and 0.303 and 0.221 with Diet 4. In conclusion, the infection affected the productive performance regardless of the diet; however, with increased metabolizable protein and energy, the risk of occurrence of anemia and hypoproteinemia diminished.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different levels of methionine supplementation on feed intake, nutrient digestibility and growth performance of growing rabbit. Sixteen weaned crossbred New Zealand White (NZW) growing rabbits (30-35 d) were distributed into four treatment groups having four replications in each group using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Basal diet composed of green grass (dhal grass) and concentrate mixture which was offered ad libitum basis for 56 days period. Four levels of methionine such as 0.0% (control), 0.15%, 0.25%, and 0.35% were supplemented randomly to rabbits. Results showed that supplementation of methionine did not affect green grass intake. Cumulative as well as daily concentrate and DM intake were significantly (p<0.05) higher for all methionine groups than control group. Final body weight gain as well as daily, weekly and cumulative body weight gains were improved significantly with increasing level of methionine. It was found that methionine had significant (p<0.01) effect on digestibility of DM, CP, NFE and EE but CF digestibility did not differ significantly. Digestibility was improved with increasing the level of methionine. Feed conversion ratio also decreased significantly with methionine supplementation, and 0.25% methionine group showed the best performance among the four treatments. Abstract The objective of this study was to provide the first report of resistance of Haemonchus contortus to monepantel in sheep in Espírito Santo. The study was conducted in a property with history of monepantel use since 2014 and register of low efficacy in studies conducted over the past few years with fecal egg count reduction test. Lambs born on the property (males and females aged approximately 100 days) were selected and after eggs per gram of feces (EPG) analysis on fecal samples, these were divided into two groups: a group treated with monepantel (2.5 mg / Kg) and a control group without anthelmintic treatment. Seven days later, the animals were euthanized to recover parasites from the gastrointestinal tract. The efficacy of the treatment was 61.35% against H. contortus, thus proving that anthelmintic resistance to monepantel was present.

Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by different strains of fungi, such as aspergillus, fusarium, and penicillium that can contaminate feed ingredients or the entire feed of poultry and animals. Mycotoxins can cause many serious complications to both humans and animals due to carcinogenic, mutagenic, and immunosuppressive disorders. Therefore, the present experiment aims to investigate the effect of broiler chickens’ diets supplemented with different levels of nanosilica (NS) as an adsorbent agent of mycotoxins on their growth performance and hepatic histopathology. Detectable levels of toxins were present in the feed before feeding, and all levels of mycotoxins were above the normal limit. A total of 180 one-day-old male Arbor Acres broiler chickens were allocated randomly to six treatment groups with three replicates per group, including ten chickens per replicate. The experiment lasted for five weeks, and dietary treatments included control diet and diets with four levels of nanosilica as 0.05%, 0.10%, 0.15%, and 0.20% as well as 0.50% bentonite (fixfin® Dry) diet. Bodyweight, body weight gain, average daily feed intake, and feed conversion ratio were measured weekly. At the end of the fifth week, six chickens per treatment were sacrificed to investigate the effects of NS and bentonite on carcass characteristics and hepatic histopathology. The results showed that providing broiler chickens’ diets with an adsorbent agent, such as NS or bentonite, can reduce the side effects of mycotoxins and enhance their growth performance. The best record was achieved with NS at 0.20%, compared with the control group and other dietary treatment groups. Accordingly, 0.20% of NS could be used in broiler chickens’ diets to minimize the harmful effects of mycotoxins.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two nutritional statuses on the productive performance of Dorper lambs naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes. Thirty-two lambs, grazing together on the same pasture, were allocated into four experimental groups: (G1) infected-supplemented diet, (G2) control-supplemented diet, (G3) infected-basal diet, and (G4) control-basal diet. Control animals received suppressive treatment with monepantel every two weeks, while precautionary anthelmintic treatments were given to all lambs of the infected groups with packed cell volume (PCV) <23%. There was reduction in the PCV means of all groups, which was more pronounced in the infected lambs that also presented reduction in total plasma protein values in comparison with the controls. Weight gain was affected by diet and infection status (P < 0.05). Daily body weight gain was 0.170 kg in the G1, 0.205 kg in the G2, 0.085 kg in the G3, and 0.116 kg in the G4. The cold carcass weight was 4.1% and 13.7% higher in controls in comparison with infected lambs, respectively, in the supplemented and basal diets. The infected groups, despite receiving precautionary anthelmintic treatments to prevent deaths due to haemonchosis, presented reduction in the production parameters in comparison with the controls.

The traditional method of waste disposal employed by pig producers in Malaysia is washing wastes down with plenty of water. While this method cleans the pig pens and cools down the animals, it generates a lot of wastewaters which pollute the waterways and causes social problems. An experiment was conducted to study the effect of in situ solid waste handling within the pig pens in order to avoid wastewater generation. This was carried out by in situ aerobic digestion of waste in a litter of sawdust to which was added a bioproduct. Ninety pigs of about 21 kg initial weight were allotted to three treatment groups, namely: 1, Control Group where pigs were kept on concrete floor, washed once daily and fed a standard diet; 2, pigs kept without washing on litter floor containing bioproduct; 3, pigs kept on litter floor and fed with a standard diet containing 1% of the bioproduct. The bioproduct was applied on litter at 120 g/m2 initially and then subsequently at 100 g/m2 every fortnight. When litter was appropriately managed by periodic mixing and moisture adjustment, odour score was significantly reduced in litter floor compared with concrete floor. Similarly, incidence of fly infestation was significantly reduced in litter floor. However, animal performance in terms of average daily body weight gain and efficiency of feed conversion was significantly reduced in pigs kept on litter floor compared with those on concrete floor. Pigs kept on litter for 90 days had increased leaf fat, but did not exhibit any significant differences in other carcass characterisitics compared with those kept the traditional way.

A study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of tulsi and ginger as feed additives on comparative economics of broiler chicks. Two hundred and ten day-old chicks divided into 7 groups and each group having 30 chicks. Control group was fed on basal diet and T1 and T2 group were supplemented with 0.5% and 1% of tulsi leaf powder in the ration, respectively. Likewise, G1 and G2 group were supplemented with 0.5% and 1% of ginger powder in the ration, respectively. T1G1 and T2G2 treatment groups were supplemented with 0.5% and 1% of both herbs in combination, respectively. The statistical analysis of data revealed highly significant (p<0.01) effect of tulsi leaf and ginger powder on average daily body weight gain. Highest average daily body weight gain during starter phase was recorded in T2G2 group fed with tulsi leaf and ginger powder @ 0.5% each, which was comparable with G2 group. During finisher phase of trial statistical analysis revealed highest (p<0.01) average daily body weight gain in T2G2 group. Lowest average daily body weight gain was observed in control group during starter and finisher period. Statistical analysis of data revealed highly significant (p<0.01) effect on comparative economics of broilers due to supplementation of tulsi leaf and ginger powder. Highest net profit per kg of live weight was observed in T2G2 group supplemented with 0.5% tulsi leaf and ginger powder each and lowest net profit per kg of live weight was observed in T2 group which was comparable with control group. The overall mortality per cent of chicks under different treatment groups was observed to be 16.17% in control group and 6.66% in T1 and T2, and in G1, G2, T1G1, T2G2 groups observed no mortality. It may be concluded that supplementation tulsi leaf and ginger powder as feed additives improves daily weight gain, comparative economics and reduced mortality of broiler chicks.

Testosteron merupakan salah satu hormon anabolik yang dapat memacu pertumbuhan massa otot dan tulang. Hormon testosteron mampu merangsang sekresi growth hormone yang berperan dalam pertumbuhan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari pengaruh pemberian hormon testosteron dengan dosis bertingkat terhadap performa dan kecernaan pakan ayam broiler. Sebanyak 44 ekor ayam broiler berumur 15 hari dengan rata-rata bobot badan antara 650 ± 71 g dibagi menjadi 4 kelompok (K, T1, T2, dan T3). K adalah kelompok kontrol; T1, T2, dan T3 adalah kelompok yang diberi testosteron dosis 1, 2, dan 4 mg per ekor. Parameter yang diukur adalah bobot badan, konsumsi pakan, rasio konversi pakan, serta persentase kandungan nutrisi (di dalam pakan dan feses). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pemberian testosteron dosis 1 dan 4 mg dapat meningkatkan pertambahan bobot badan harian secara signifikan (p<0,05) pada ayam broiler yang berumur antara 15 dan 18 hari. Testosteron dosis 2 mg meningkatkan bobot badan harian secara signifikan (p<0,05) pada ayam broiler yang berumur antara 21 dan 24 hari. Konsumsi pakan, rasio konversi pakan, dan kecernaan pakan ayam broiler yang diberi hormon testosteron tidak menunjukkan perbedaan dibanding dengan kontrol. Akan tetapi, pada kelompok yang diberi testosteron dosis 4 mg, nilai kecernaan lemak, protein, dan karbohidrat cenderung meningkat.Kata kunci: broiler, kecernaan, pertambahan bobot badan harian, proksimat, testosteron (Broiler Chickens Performance and Feed Digestibility Treated with Multi-Dose Testosterone Hormone)Testosterone is one of the anabolic hormone that can trigger the growth of muscle mass and bone. Testosterone hormone can stimulate secretion of growth hormone that has a role in growth. The aim of this research was to observe the administration of multi-dose testosterone hormone on broiler chickens performance and feed digestibility. Fourty four broiler chickens 15 days old with average weight 650 ± 71 g were divided into 4 groups (K, T1, T2, and T3). K was control group; T1, T2, and T3 were groups which given testosterone dose 1, 2, and 4 mg each chicken. Parameters measured were body weight, feed consumption, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and nutritions percentage (in feed and feces). The results showed that testosterone dose 1 and 4 mg could increase the daily body weight gain significantly (p<0.05) in broiler chickens aged between 15 and 18 days old. Testosterone dose 2 mg could increase the daily body weight gain significantly (p<0.05) in broiler chickens aged between 21 and 24 days old. Feed consumption, FCR, and feed digestibility of chickens given testosterone did not show any difference compare with control. However, in group which given testosterone dose 4 mg, the digestibility values of fat, protein, and carbohydrates tended to increase.Keywords: broiler, digestibility, daily body weight gain, proximate, testosterone

In an effort to expand the knowledge base on the use of non conventional feedstuff in rabbit nutrition, the nutritional potential and the cost effectiveness of using rice offal fermented with rumen filtrate for 48 hours was investigated using twenty five (25) growing crossbred rabbit bucks weighed between 625.34 g-631.21 g for 10 weeks. The rabbits were divided into five (5) treatment groups of five (5) rabbits each with each rabbit serving as a replicate in a completely randomized design experiment. The control group was fed with a diet containing maize as the main energy source while the remaining four groups were fed with diets in which the maize was replaced with 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% Rumen filtrate fermented-rice offal meals respectively. Final weight was similar (P>0.05) in rabbits fed maize-based control diet and those fed diet containing 5% to 20% Rumen Filtrate Fermented Rice Offal Meals (FRO). The experimental diets had significant (P<0.05) effect on the daily feed intake, and daily body weight gain with rabbits on 20% having superior weights of 93.88 g and 20.54 g respectively, and a better feed conversion ratio of 4.57 g. The cost of feed per kg of weight gain was lowered progressively from N446/kg for the control diet to N307/kg for the 20% FRO diet, where the lowest feed cost was observed, with a concomitant improvement in overall production profitability. It was concluded that fermenting rice offal with rumen filtrate had high potential as a possible replacement for maize in rabbit diet at inclusion levels of up to 20%. The use of this agricultural by-product can reduce the cost of rabbit production, increase the availability of cheaper animal protein for the populace, generate higher profit margins for the livestock farmer and reduce environmental pollution. It was therefore recommended that feed manufacturers and rabbit farmers can incorporate up to 20% of bovine rumen filtrate-fermented rice offal meal in the diets of rabbits without compromising performance.

This study investigated the nutritional potency and efficacy of tannin-containing forages as anti-parasites sources to support the performance of female Bligon goats. Fifteen female Bligon goats were divided into 3 different groups based on feeding treatments. The first group (KG) served as the control and was fed 100% king grass (dry matter basis). The second group (KGC) was fed 50% king grass and 50% Calliandra calothyrsus leaves (dry matter basis). The third group (KGA) was fed 50% king grass and 50% Artocarpus heterophyllus leaves (dry matter basis). The study showed that supplementation with tannin-containing forages could improve feed consumption and the digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), and crude protein (CP). The groups that received tannin-containing forages had higher body weight gains at 22.85 g/day and 29.52 g/day for KGC and KGA respectively than the control group. The anti-parasites effects were successfully indicated by the declining number of coccidian oocysts in the feces (number/gram feces), which were 3,166; 841; and 450 for KG, KGC, and KGA respectively. Tannin-containing forage supplementation could improve the consumption and digestibility of DM, OM and CP. Supplementation improved the daily body weight gain. The number of coccidian oocysts in animals receiving supplementation was also reduced. The greatest effects on fecal coccidian oocyst reduction were attained with Jackfruit leaves (Artocarpus heterophyllus) supplementation

Influence of gastrointestinal trichostrongylidosis on ram fertility A study on the influence of gastrointestinal trichostrongyles on ram fertility was performed. Two groups of semen donor rams (Sarda breed) were utilized; one was experimentally infected with Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Teladorsagia circumcincta and the other was used as a control group. In all animals, coprological, haematological and reproductive parameters were studied. The results suggest that the parasites had a limited effect with some changes in phosphorus, cholesterol and chlorine levels. In our experience the parasitic burden produced no significant change on ram fertility.
