The popular culture and the civic engagement of university students

The huge potential of popular culture shaped and transmitted over “mass-media” and “new” media is noticed. At the same time, they are criticized due to their content and their influence on human actions and social relations. A number of social researchers refer to the submission of media to popular culture and entertainment, promoting of immaturity of the recipients and in consequences withdrawn from the public sphere. On the other hand, the popular culture is consider as a factor important for development of the human capital, the bonding social capital, individuals identity and society’s cohesion. The aim of this paper is to analyse the relationship between popular culture and the civic engagement of youth. First, the basic assumptions of popular culture- civic engagement relations are introduced. The second section is based on the chosen findings of author’s pilot study into the field of The youth identity formation in the mobile society era (N=92). The mutual associations between the popular culture consumption of university students and their level of civic engagement are analysed. The research results show statistical significance of the positive relationship in the sample between analysed factors. The higher is level of students’ cultural participation and media consumption, the higher is level of their civic engagement. The article concludes with the explanation of those findings, which may be considered surprising in light of popular culture criticism.

American studies has been dedicated to understanding cultural forms from its beginnings as a field. Music, as one such form, is especially centered in the field as a lens through which to seek the cultural “essence” of US America – as texts from which to glean insight into negotiations of intellectual thought, social relations, subaltern resistance, or identity formation, or as a form of labor that produces an exchangeable commodity. In particular, the featuring of folk, indigenous, and popular music directly responded to anxieties in the intellectual circles of the postwar era around America's purported lack of serious culture in comparison to Europe. According to John Gilkeson, American studies scholars in the 1950s and 1960s “vulgarized” the culture concept introduced by the Boasian school of anthropology, opening the door to serious consideration of popular culture as equal in value to high culture.1

The pervasiveness of new media has raised some questions as to what would happen if we were to deprive ourselves of different media forms for a shorter or longer time. The debate on this issue has become intense in recent years, especially in relation to the hypothesis that the relationship with the web and internet can configure a greater and more insidious dependence on media. To verify how, and if, this happens, I asked 121 university students to refrain from the consumption of media on smartphones, tablets, radios and televisions for a period ranging from three days to a week. The results, collected in diaries compiled during the test, testified to different levels of attachment to media, the interruption of which produced notable consequences in the daily organisation of time and social relations.

This essay examines young Venezuelans’ experiences of daily insecurities and critical situations and their responses using the framework of ontological security. The study uses the concept of ‘multiple youths,’ proposed by Latin American scholars, to link the ideas of security and identity, to explore the different intersubjective understandings of these notions in the lives of university students, and to explain their choice of conflict as part of the ordinary. Empirical analysis shows how routinization of conflict has a strong psychological impact on Venezuelan youth’s intersubjective identity formation and interpretation of events as ordinary or threatening. The routinization of conflict is a response to maintaining ontological security, providing a sense of constancy and continuity since it has become part of the routines of university students in Venezuela. In addition, conflict helps eliminate and/or delegitimize the ‘other,’ hence hindering dialogue and a negotiated solution to the current political impasse.

Purpose: International student enrolment in Canadian universities is increasing. As international university students acculturate, they experience a culture shock in which food plays a major role. International university students’ Canadian food experiences therefore were explored. Methods: A Photovoice methodology was used with 15 international undergraduate and graduate university students, who were recruited to take pictures of their food experiences. They also participated in two focus group discussions that included an analysis of their photos. Results: Seven themes related to the significance of food in acculturation were revealed: the paradox of Canadian convenience, the equation of traditional foods with health, traditional food quality and accessibility, support networks, food consumption for comfort, ethnic restaurants, and the exploration of non-traditional foods. Maintaining cultural identity with traditional foods was an overarching theme related to acculturation. Conclusions: International students acculturating to Canada have emotional and physical needs, which can be met through food. Opportunities exist to improve their acculturation experiences. Canadian universities can incorporate food acculturation strategies into campus events and menus. Nutrition professionals on campus can facilitate a positive food environment and nurture culture identity formation.

The article defines the essence of the concept of “civic engagement of university students” and the process of formation of civic engagement of university students in quarantine conditions. The structure of civic engagement of university students is characterized. Criteria are substantiated and indicators of the formation of civic engagement of university students are defined: incentive criterion (sustainable social motives for achieving socially significant goals, the student’s achievement motive, value attitude to future professional activities); epistemological criterion (knowledge about public organizations and their activities, awareness of knowledge of civic responsibility, the presence of civic consciousness) behavioral (leadership ability, responsibility for own decisions, actions and team actions) creatively developing criterion (the presence of self-knowledge skills, the ability to introspection , self-esteem, self-criticism of the results of one's own socially useful activity). The substantive characteristic of such levels of formation of civic engagement of university students as: insufficient, initial, sufficient, high is given. The use of such digital tools is shown, which allows to form effectively the civic engagement of university students in quarantine conditions: a) the creation of an author's blog (to display information about: the national identity of the Ukrainian people (history, traditions, language, culture, etc.), planned for the future and already organized events by the student self-government were held, video and photo reports of the events) b) use of Google applications (Google meet - for conferences, meetings, online consultations; Google Drive, Google forms - for online questionnaires with the aim of : predicting the relevance of the event, it is planned, determining the effectiveness of the activities, identifying the psychological atmosphere in the team, identifying the socio-psychological characteristics of students, student awareness; Google photos; Google calendar; Google video). The results of an experimental study on the formation of civic engagement of university students, carried out during 2019 at V.O. Sukhomlynskyi Mykolaiv National University, are presented, which proves the practical importance of using such digital tools in quarantine conditions.

From the Dutch colonial era until the end of Suharto administration, Chinese Indonesians have perpetually been the victims of racial prejudice and negative stereotyping addressed by pribumi. However, the most difficult situations and unpleasant experiences occurred under Suharto's New Order, where the forced assimilation policy was implemented and Chinese Indonesians at that time were drawn to Chinese films and series to search for their Chinese-ness, while escaping reality. The previous researches did not provide comprehensive studies on the identity formation of Chinese Indonesians in Post-Suharto era, especially after the reformation era, under different presidents. Therefore, the subjective reality of third and fourth generations of Chinese Indonesians who spent their adolescence and/or adulthood over the course of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY)’s tenure has been explored in this study. From the constructive nature of reality to the situational constraints that shape inquiry, the Chinese Indonesians were indeed more emotionally expressive, supported by a more stable political and economic condition, exposure to the new media, and enhanced bilateral partnership between China and Indonesia. The use of new media in disseminating the Chinese cultural values through the media product, as well as the Chinese cultural practice publicly held by mostly Chinese communities in Indonesia became the influential factors in connecting those younger generations of Chinese Indonesia to their heritage. Ethnic pride and cultural long-distance nationalism can be eventually observed.

No doubt the development of popular culture is very fast in the world, especially the K-Pop industry. Due to rapid development of K-Pop and more fans, innovations have begun to emerge in showing the love of fans towards K-Pop. One of them is K-Pop cover dance activities. This study discusses "The Formation of the Identity of K-Pop Cover Dance Performers in Jakarta" and uses observation and interview data collection methods to find out more about how the formation of K-Pop cover actors' self-identity formation. The theory used is their dramatism on the front stage and also the backstage. In this study the authors can see that each individual communicates themselves in different ways and not all cover dance performers perform their front stage roles up to their backstage life. The formation of the identity of the cover dance actors can change to follow the environment where they are and with whom they communicate. However, not a few also feel that his life as a cover dance on stage imitates and becomes someone else's figure carried to their   daily from various aspects such as family, experience and also the community.Tidak dipungkiri perkembangan budaya populer sangat pesat di dunia terutama K-Pop. Akibat perkembangan K-Pop yang pesat dan penggemarnya yang semakin banyak, mulai bermunculan inovasi dalam menunjukkan kecintaan dari penggemar terhadap K-Pop. Salah satunya adalah kegiatan cover dance K-Pop. Penelitian ini membahas tentang “Pembentukan Identitas Diri Para Pelaku Cover Dance K-Pop di Jakarta” dengan menggunakan teori dramatisme mereka pada front stage dan juga back stage. Dalam penelitian ini penulis dapat melihat bahwa setiap individu mengkomunikasikan diri mereka dengan cara yang berbeda-beda dan tidak semua pelaku cover dance melakukan peran front stage mereka hingga ke kehidupan backstage mereka. Peneliti menggunakan metode pengumpulan data observasi dan wawancara untuk mengetahui lebih dalam mengenai bagaimana pembentukan identitas diri para pelaku cover dance K-Pop. Pembentukan identitas diri para pelaku cover dance dapat berubah mengikuti lingkungan dimana mereka berada dan dengan siapa mereka berkomunikasi. Namun, tidak sedikit juga yang merasa bahwa kehidupannya sebagai seorang cover dance di atas panggung yang meniru dan menjadi sosok orang lain terbawa hingga ke kehidupan sehari-hari mereka dari berbagai macam aspek seperti keluarga, pengalaman dan juga komunitas.

<p>This research project undertakes a critical analysis of the use of new media technologies by community activists engaging in local and global communities. Increasingly, community organizations are using digital media to augment their various activities and conduct campaigns. I will consider this development with regard to WorldPulse.com, a global organization whose aim is to foster and facilitate civic engagement. More specifically, the website attempts to function and serve as a global public sphere and vehicle for the expression and discussion of political, social and cultural issues relevant to women. The analysis conducted in this thesis focuses on the website’s digital action campaigns on gender-based violence, girl child education, and women’s access to technology between 2012 and 2014, and its ‘Voices of Our Future’ citizen journalism training program.  This project employs digital ethnographic methods using content and discourse analysis, participant observation, online web survey, semi-structured email interviews and a researcher’s journal to examine the potential of worldpulse.com to serve as a global public sphere for women. The research makes use of critical studies theories and data triangulation methodologies in order to identify and evaluate if, and to what extent, the site facilitates public sphere activity and activism. I have developed an inductive typology to assess levels and kinds of civic engagement that is enabled and augmented by the interconnection of online and offline advocacy. This thesis aims to contribute to the body of scholarly literature researching and evaluating the extent to which new media technologies enable and facilitate public sphere engagement.</p>

Background: Social networks have changed the dynamics of society in communication, commercial and social relations, advertising, among others. In sports, this would not be different. Along with this, the new media open up new possibilities for exploration of the image of the athlete, since traditional media conduct different treatments for male and female athletes. Objective: To verify the posts made on Instagram by Brazilian athletes and to verify if there are differences related to the gender of the athletes in the contents posted. Methods: The subjects selected for this research were Brazilian athletes and medalists of the 2012 Summer Olympics. The data were obtained through the collection of the images that the athletes posted on the Instagram and after that, the analysis of the images were made with the use of a checklist created for that study. Results: The results indicated that male and female did not present differences between categories of posted images. The most common type of images posted are the images in which the athlete is present, in places related to their work and in moments of relaxation. It also highlights the fact that most of the images posted do not make any reference to the sponsorships of the athletes. Conclusion: Therefore, it can be concluded that male and female have the same behavior of photo posting on social networks. It is also observed that the potential of social networks for advertising is still little explored by Brazilian athletes. Due to the originality of this work and because it seems to be a very pertinent theme in the present day, it is suggested the extension of this study.
