Biomass burning in Africa provides a prolific source of aerosols that are transported from the source region to distant areas, as far away as South America and Australia. Models have long predicted the primary outflow and transport routes. Over time, field studies have validated the basic production and dynamics that underlie these transport patterns. In more recent years, the advancement of spaceborne active remote-sensing techniques has allowed for more detailed verification of the models and, importantly, verification of the vertical distribution of the aerosols in the transport regions, particularly with respect to westerly transport over the Atlantic Ocean. The Cloud-Aerosol Transport System (CATS) lidar on the International Space Station has detection sensitivity that provides observations that support long-held theories of aerosol transport from the African subcontinent over the remote Indian Ocean and as far downstream as Australia.

The Cloud-Aerosol Transport System (CATS) onboard the International Space Station (ISS), is a lidar system providing vertically resolved aerosol and cloud profiles since February 2015. In this study, the CATS aerosol product is validated against the aerosol profiles provided by the European Aerosol Research Lidar Network (EARLINET). This validation activity is based on collocated CATS-EARLINET measurements and the comparison of the particle backscatter coefficient at 1064nm.

The present paper is the second of two dealing with field studies carried out near Lagos, Nigeria. The first paper covered four of the most abundant species encountered and the second is concerned with the remaining forty-eight. These are listed and the data relating to the thirty-eight least abundant, with the exception of two which were taken as males only, are given in tabular form. The other ten are dealt with at greater length. Males of twenty-six species were taken and in the case of three of these species they were so abundant as to create the impression that a swarming activity was involved. In the case of the ten more abundant species seasonal distribution curves are given based on average monthly catches and an attempt is made to relate these to variations in rainfall. The biting curves which are next discussed show a greater variety of types than those described in the first paper. In general, they are characterised by a fairly sharp peak associated with morning or evening twilight, but some have a more or less pronounced peak at both ends of the cycle and so correspond to the “eo-crepuscular” type of Haddow (1945). Anopheles paludis, like Taeniorhynchus africanus (described in the first paper) has an ill-defined period of maximum activity during the middle of the night. The necessity of sub-dividing the figures in order to obtain a picture of the vertical distribution of the various species led in one or two cases to anomalous results, but in general a clear and fairly convincing picture was obtained. None of the species dealt with in the present paper was sufficiently abundant to afford reliable data on hourly variations in vertical distribution. In the general discussion, which embodies such inferences as it has seemed permissible to draw from the data, attention is drawn to the fact that the so-called “biting cycle” does not, in all likelihood, depend exclusively on variations in the urge to bite, but is more probably an expression of cyclical changes taking place in the general level of activity of the mosquito. The possible relationship of such changes to changes of a similar kind in the physical environment is discussed, and it is pointed out that intrinsic rhythms in the mosquito, perhaps related to the breeding cycle, may also be involved. Some data are presented which, while partly explained by the presence of a sibling species, may also indicate an interrelationship between the breeding cycle and vertical distribution.

<p>Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an important atmospheric trace gas, and among the key O3 precursors in the troposphere, alongside NOx and VOCs. It is among the most important sinks of OH radical in the atmosphere, which controls lifetime of CH4 — a major greenhouse gas. Biomass burning sources contribute about 25% to the global emissions of CO, with the remaining CO being either emitted from anthropogenic sources, or being chemically formed in the atmosphere. Because of CO tropospheric lifetime is about two months; it can be transported in the atmosphere thus its sources have a hemispheric impact on atmospheric composition.</p><p>The extent of the impact of biomass burning to remote areas of the world through long range transport is here investigated using the global 3-dimensional chemistry transport model TM4-ECPL. For this, tagged biomass burning CO tracers from the 13 different HTAP (land) source regions are used in the model in order to evaluate the contribution of each source region to the CO concentrations in the 170 HTAP receptor regions that originate from biomass burning. The global simulations cover the period 1994—2015 in order to derive climatological transport patterns for CO and assess the contribution of each of the source regions to each of the receptor regions in the global troposphere. The CO simulations are evaluated by comparison with satellite observations from MOPITT and ground based observations from WDCGG. We show the significant impact of biomass burning emissions to the most remote regions of the world.</p>

Published 4 decades ago, “Basking in Reflected Glory: Three (Football) Field Studies” (Cialdini et al., 1976) is the most influential study of sport consumer behavior. This article features re-creations of Studies 1 and 2, exactly 40 years after the original publication. The results of Study 1 were reproduced, with participants more than twice as likely to wear school-affiliated apparel after wins and 55% less likely after losses. The study also extends the BIRGing literature in its investigation of the influence of gender and the effect’s salience over time. Study 2’s results were not reproduced. However, study participants were significantly more likely to use first-person plural pronouns, providing further empirical evidence of BIRGing behaviors. This article makes a novel contribution to the sport consumer behavior literature by advancing the study of one of the field’s most foundational theories and serving as an impetus for future investigations of BIRGing motivations.

The development of Islamic economics and finance in Indonesia in the last few decades has experienced significant developments. It can be seen in the increasing number of sharia businesses in various sectors. From financial institutions, both bank and non-bank financial institutions, Islamic capital markets, sharia bonds (Sukuk) to tourism development managed in a sharia manner. Over time, this rapid development must also be balanced with compliance with sharia values. This study aims to assess Islamic microfinance institutions (BMT) in implementing sharia principles in their products. The product studied in this study is Murabahah. This research uses a qualitative approach with field studies. The results of this study, the BMT studied in this study in general, have implemented sharia values. The implication of this research is to strengthen the compliance of Islamic financial institutions in implementing Islamic values. This research can also be used as a reference by related parties, especially in developing Islamic financial institutions.

For many decades plant breeders have worked to improve vegetable crops for numerous economically important traits, like host plant resistance to disease, yield, and vegetable quality. Most improvements have been made with little knowledge as to how, or if, nutritional or phytonutrient concentrations might also be indirectly altered in the process. There have been some reports suggesting that concentrations of nutrients in vegetables have been reduced over time, possibly related to introductions of new cultivars. However, for most vegetables, current evidence indicating changes in nutrient concentrations, and specifically mineral concentrations, is circumstantial at best. To effectively test whether changes may have occurred over time as new cultivars replace older ones, appropriate field studies must be conducted wherein harvested produce from “old” vs. “new” crop cultivars is analyzed by appropriate methods and compared directly. Numerous considerations and issues such as 1) the set of cultivars to be used in field tests; 2) how nutritional concentration will be expressed; and 3) the evolution, history, and consumption changes of the crop under study must be addressed in making such direct comparisons and interpreting results.
