Employment and the Formation of Professional Competencies of “Workers of the Future”

In the context of the general transformation of the leading sectors of the economy, the general employment paradigm is also changing, namely, the approach to the formation of professional competencies for job seekers in the labor market. These trends are increasing with the acceleration of the digitalization of society, which also penetrates into the analyzed processes. The article provides an overview of the models of professional competencies and their development, as a result of which the author has developed her own approach to this issue. Namely, it has been determined that the ongoing transformations increase the importance not only in the existing competencies of applicants, but also in the personal and intellectual abilities they have. In the modern world, the advantage is given to people belonging to the category of “work for the future”. They are the ones who strive to achieve the highest possible results, while finding ways for continuous development, and are more adaptable to digital transformation, including in the labor market. Despite the fact that the goals and objectives of the evaluation system of applicants’ professional competencies will remain the same for they seem common in the analyzed area of management and meet strategic corporate goals of companies’ development. The new will be the information support, which includes artificial intelligence, which first forms the set of applicants’ professional competencies, and then evaluates them. Taking into account the ongoing transformations, the article proposes a new model for the formation of professional competencies. The harmonization of the competency model of each applicant will form a single ensemble that does not contain incompatible competencies (for example, high innovation and strict compliance with regulations). The innovation of the developed model lies in the systematic distribution of competencies among employees, their direct management, and companies’ management. It is by using the proposed model, university graduates and people with experience who decided to change the profession will be able to determine their direction, to evaluate the correctness of the choice of profession, to present themselves to potential employers not only as high professionals in their field, but also to reveal their psychological data, cognitive abilities that are focused on results. Singularity of the changes that occur proves the relevance of the model and determines the aim of the article, which is to develop a model for the formation of professional competencies in the employment market, taking into account the ongoing changes and the growth of society’s technological activity.

The relevance of the topic is due to the difficulties that the Russian higher education system is facing today. Higher education together with the education system as a whole constitutes the most important factor in the development of national production. The progress of higher education must meet the requirements of the modern market. The purpose of the article is to identify areas of improvement of the education system, corresponding to promising trends in the development of the labor market. Changes in the modern labor market are changing the role of higher education in the economy. It should create a solid foundation of knowledge and skills of graduates, which will allow them to adapt to the changing labor market and independently develop their careers. The system of higher education of the future should change qualitatively in comparison with the level existing in Russia. The constantly evolving skills required by employers in the modern labor market necessitate a qualitative improvement of university graduates. Highly qualified specialists in any profession of the future should possess not only “hard” skills, but also “soft” skills. The flexibility of the modern labor market requires the appropriate flexibility of the higher education system. Universities should make greater use of new educational technologies to achieve this goal.

This article reveals the opportunities and limitations of non-formal education for mastering professions of the future. The authors note that the transition to high-technology economy is accompanied by the rapid development of new areas of work. The dynamics of the modern world requires a quick response, the need for constant updating of knowledge and skills is growing, the importance of formal diplomas in the labor market is decreasing (inflation of credentialism), and the role of non-formal education is increasing. The purpose of the research presented in this article is to identify promising areas of professional activity in a high-tech economy and the potential of non-formal education for mastering the professions of the future. The authors conducted a qualitative content analysis of job search sites, illustrating the indicators of demand for the professions of the future in different countries, the key skills required for these professions, the resources of formal and non-formal education for mastering these professions. An empirical study was carried out using the survey method (N = 1388, the age of the respondents was from 18 to 80 years old, data analysis was made by using SPSS), conducted in Russia, revealing involvement in non-formal education. The novelty of the study derives from the role of non-formal education, which prevails in mastering the professions of the future: the absolute majority (85%) use non-formal education for retraining, gaining knowledge in related fields. According to the results of the study, it was found that the range of professions of the future reflects uneven post-industrial transition in different countries, in Russia the role of non-formal education as an element of life-long learning is rising. The authors conclude that the labor market, where the professions of the future are represented, will not be characterized by credentialism; individual learning paths based on non-formal education will dominate in mastering these professions.

Scholarship on adult education throughout the life course focuses on the relationship between education and upward mobility. Scholars rarely examine how adults’ educational aspirations or trajectories are affected by downward mobility or an increasingly precarious labor market. Drawing on in-depth qualitative interviews with 21 job seekers in the post–Great Recession labor market in the United States, this article advances the concept of educational downgrading: returning to school in pursuit of a credential lower than the highest level of education one previously sought or attained. We explore three pathways to downgrading connected to downward mobility: occupational dead ends, career reversals, and educational inflation. In the process, we highlight how individuals adjust their practical educational aspirations as they navigate a contemporary economy in which careers are unstable and credentials are needed for many kinds of jobs across the occupational hierarchy.

AbstractThe qualified human resources with high competitiveness and employability skills are needed to face the era of technological disruption, but employers find a lack of expertise among job seekers. Insufficient skills are related to the issue of education quality. This study aims to identify the employers’ employability skills needed in the career field and the way to integrate it into the instructional process. The research was conducted through Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and mapping approach that consisted of three stages: planning, conducting, and reporting. The literature reviews in this research were derived from Science direct, Springer and IEEE as the main references. The results from the analysis in the literature review showed that employability skills are needed in relation to the work demands in the future according to the employers covering communication, team working, problem solving, and technological skills. The implementation of employability skills in the instructional process is to integrate them into the classroom for all subjects.

In a special issue that focuses on complex presentations related to Autism, we ask the question in this editorial whether an Autism Spectrum Condition without complexity is a disorder, or whether it represents human diversity? Much research into Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASCs) over the years has focused on comparisons between neuro-typical people and people with Autism Spectrum Conditions. These comparisons have tended to draw attention to ‘deficits’ in cognitive abilities and descriptions of behaviours that are characterised as unwanted. Not surprisingly, this is reflected in the classification systems from the World Health Organisation and the American Psychiatric Association. Public opinion about ASC may be influenced by presentations in the media of those with ASC who also have intellectual disability. Given that diagnostic systems are intended to help us better understand conditions in order to seek improved outcomes, we propose a more constructive approach to descriptions that uses more positive language, and balances descriptions of deficits with research finding of strengths and differences. We propose that this will be more helpful to individuals on the Autism Spectrum, both in terms of individual self-view, but also in terms of how society views Autism Spectrum Conditions more positively. Commentary has also been made on guidance that has been adjusted for people with ASC in relation to the current COVID-19 pandemic.
