This study is to seek out learners’ needs of International Training Program (ITP) English course (batch 58) at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) in India. Thirty participants involved in the survey come from nine different countries. The questionnaire-based survey is designed with a focus on two main categories: Target situation analysis (TSA) and Present situation analysis (PSA), which is based on the adaptation of the theoretical frameworks of Dudley-Evans and St John (1998) and of Hutchinson and Waters (1987). The result of TSA has shown that Office job and Social communication are learners’ main purposes for this English course. Two most important elements that the learners expect to develop from this course are oral communication and listening skills, and linguistic knowledge of grammar and pronunciation. Meanwhile, the finding of PSA has indicated vocabulary as their most difficult element. The majority of learners perceive that they are at the third current level of English proficiency, whereas speaking skills are most frequently used in the workplace. Finally, this study has indicated the proportional relation of the elements of PSA to those of TSA. The overall finding contributes to the design for a proper English specific course for learners’ needs in the future.

Abstract Communication is a process of sharing information through speech, writing, gestures or symbols between two or more people. The focus of the present paper is oral communication and the language under consideration is English. The teacher should adopt a student centered approach. The learners should be encouraged to do things in the class which result in developing their communication skills. The trainer has to focus on both the linguistic and paralinguistic features of the communication process while enhancing learners’ communication skills. These features involve the effective use of words, forming grammatically intelligible sentences and an appropriate use of voice and intonation. The teacher should encourage and train his students to use positive body language while listening and speaking. In order to hone the communication skills of the learners, it is very important to make the learners comfortable with the language they have to communicate in. Shedding their inhibitions is also one of the pivotal areas of concerns. This paper explores different techniques that could be useful while training students in communication skills. Communication is a process of sharing information through speech, writing, gestures or symbols between two or more people. The focus of the present paper is oral communication and the language under consideration is English. The major elements of a communication process are sender, receiver, message and feedback. Effective communication is a two way process. It involves both expressive (speaking) skills and receptive (listening) skills. It entails receiver’s understanding of the message sent by the sender and his feedback to the sender. Listening plays a very important role in the language learning process. It is the most primary of the four basic skills of any language i.e. Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Listening paves way for speaking. One can never be a good speaker if one is not a good listener. An effective communicator is first a good listener and then a good speaker. According to Tickoo ( 2003 ), ‘Good listening skills not only lay the foundations of good speech, but they grow best through effective communication’.

The article tackles the problem of teaching foreign languages to seniors. The general trends in FL education for the third-age learners are outlined. The institutions in which seniors can study foreign languages in Poland are enumerated. The psychological, physiological, methodological and social peculiarities of teaching a foreign language to the third agers are analyzed. Special emphasis is laid upon educational needs of the Third Age learners. Some language learning strategies which help seniors’ foreign language learning are suggested.

My intent in this short piece is to provide a context for consideration of learner variables in foreign language learning. I first propose a question set outlining the major issues, as I see them, arising in the design of learner-based foreign language learning systems. I then present a simplified three-part design model comprising knowledge considerations (language needs assessment), instructional considerations (learning access alternatives) and learner considerations (characteristics of learners). A review of some recent work in the first two of these prefaces the discussion of the third, learner considerations. A brief state of the art report on research in learner variables is followed by some speculation on next directions in the determination and description of learner variables within a general design model for learning foreign languages.

This article presents the design, implementation and outcomes of AlpConnectar, a Swiss project that exploits technologies for digitally-supported language exchange (LE) in primary schools. Launched in 2013, the project involves three Swiss cantons where different languages are spoken (namely German, French and Italian) and respectively taught as foreign languages since the third grade of primary school. In the first section of the paper the linguistic composition of Switzerland is briefly presented and the current methodologies and approaches in foreign language teaching in the country are introduced. After a literature review of online LE practices, the AlpConnectar project is presented, along with a LE example to illustrate how it works. The final sections present the results of the project, based on data collected from both pupils and teachers. The results seem to suggest that while digital technologies offer significant benefits for LEs, they are no silver bullet, and their impact depends on a number of contextual variables.

Studies on the educational and labor reintegration of migrants returned to Latin American countries have gained importance due to the economic and social implications of rehabilitation. In this article, the return of the migrant was considered part of the migration process. An exploratory research of publications in different international journals was carried out; when consulting the referenced articles, it was identified that at the time of return the migrant presents and perceives a moral, social, educational and work imbalance. From the deficiencies found in the theoretical lines studied - Educational reinsertion, Labor reintegration - the third theoretical line was included the importance of relating the concept of entrepreneurship as an area of opportunity for returned migrants. The results of the analysis of the studies and theoretical frameworks of international migration, showed great similarities of the phenomenon in different geographical spaces, being an indispensable tool to understand their different forms, evolution and development both in the countries of origin and destination.

The development of foreign language learning in Indonesia in the millennial era nowadays requires the child to speak at least two foreign languages fluently. As in the case that the researcher founded which is a dual citizenship 10 years old child studying French as his third language. The study then focuses on 1) what third language learning’s steps for a 10 years old goes through, 2) at which stage each method is properly used, and 3) what factors influence that success. The data of this research is processed quantitatively and qualitatively. This study uses Skinner’s behaviorism theory, conventional reading and audio visual learning methods. The researcher found that the two methods complement to each other in the third language learning for dual citizenship Abstrak Perkembangan pembelajaran bahasa asing di Indonesia pada era milenial sekarang menuntut anak dapat menguasai minimal dua bahasa asing. Kasus yang ditemukan oleh peneliti yaitu seorang anak berusia 10 tahun dengan dwi kewarganegaraan yang mempelajari bahasa Prancis sebagai bahasa kedua. Penelitian ini kemudian fokus menjawab 1) tahapan pembelajaran bahasa kedua apa saja yang dilalui anak usia 10 tahun, 2) pada tahapan yang mana setiap metode itu tepat digunakan, dan 3) faktor-faktor apa saja yang mempengaruhi keberhasilan itu. Data penelitian ini diolah dengan metode kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori behaviorisme Skinner, metode pembelajaran konvensional membaca dan audio visual. Peneliti menemukan bahwa kedua metode tersebut saling melengkapi dalam pembelajaran bahasa kedua bagi anak dwi kewarganegaraan

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) has been suggested as an ideal vehicle for engaging faculty with professional development for teaching in higher education. However, previous authors have identified that faculty find writing about SoTL difficult. The aim of this chapter is to support educational developers (EDs) to collaborate with faculty to support writing. Two theoretical frameworks to support collaboration are proposed: the first, the Knowledge Transforming Model of Writing, to assist with the process of writing; the second, an adaptation of Brigugilio's working in the third space framework to support collaboration. The authors utilise both frameworks to reflect on their own SoTL collaboration and subsequently pose questions to support faculty and EDs to do the same. Ultimately, it is proposed that collaboration not only enhances the practices of faculty and EDs but improves what should be an important priority for the wider academy: the learning outcomes of students.

The paper reports about the development of a Named Entity Recognition (NER) system in Bengali using a tagged Bengali news corpus and the subsequent transliteration of the recognized Bengali Named Entities (NEs) into English. Three different models of the NER have been developed. A semi-supervised learning method has been adopted to develop the first two models, one without linguistic features (Model A) and the other with linguistic features (Model B). The third one (Model C) is based on statistical Hidden Markov Model. A modified joint-source channel model has been used along with a number of alternatives to generate the English transliterations of Bengali NEs and vice-versa. The transliteration models learn the mappings from the bilingual training sets optionally guided by linguistic knowledge in the form of conjuncts and diphthongs in Bengali and their representations in English. The NER system has demonstrated the highest average Recall, Precision and F-Score values of 89.62%, 78.67% and 83.79% respectively in Model C. Evaluation of the proposed transliteration models demonstrated that the modified joint source-channel model performs best in terms of evaluation metrics for person and location names for both Bengali to English (B2E) transliteration and English to Bengali transliteration (E2B). The use of the linguistic knowledge during training of the transliteration models improves performance.
