Introduction. Cerebral palsy (CP) has a significant prevalence in industrialized countries and is characterized by a high level of disability. Children and adolescents with CP face challenging situations. Physical defects repeatedly manifest in the daily life of a child in the form of other extraordinary events such as hospitalization, surgery, prolonged immobilization, and separation from family. Such events can be accompanied by feelings of fear, anxiety, helplessness, and pronounced symptoms of maladjustment. Under these conditions, certain biological and social compensatory manifestations help to identify such complicated conditions and restore the normal functioning of the body. Compensatory manifestations are a type of compensatory defense mechanisms. The major role in establishing a system of protection is played by the relationship between a child and his or her parents. Defense mechanisms can be formed during the process of assimilation of protective parental behavior, or because of the inappropriate attitude of mothers to the child’s illness. The purpose of the research was to study the defense mechanisms in children with CP in the context of mothers’ relationship to her child’s illness. Materials and methods. The research involved 120 people. The experimental group included 30 children with CP aged 5 to 11 years and their mothers. The control group consisted of relatively healthy children (30) and their mothers. The following was used to achieve the goal: the elements of clinical and biographical method, projective technique, the technique of diagnostics of attitude to the child’s illness. Results and discussion. The repertoire of psychological defense mechanisms in children with CP is limited in comparison with those in healthy children. Children with CP are dominated by the defense mechanism of “denial” that can play a negative role in the process of adaptation of these children in a situation involving complex treatments. The mothers of children with CP share an emotionally intense relationship with their child’s disease. Excessively disturbing attitudes of the mother to the disease of her child can contribute to the formation of negative psychological defense mechanisms of negation type in the child, which reduces the child’s psychological compensatory capacity and capability of adaptation in conditions of complex treatment.

In The Sense of an Ending, Julian Barnes portrays the mysterious workings of the human mind as it distorts facts towards the end of a self-image that one can live with. The protagonist in the novel deploys certain psychological defense mechanisms in order to protect himself from feelings of anxiety, only to experience even more profound anxiety due to his excessive use of them. The significance of the present paper lies in its novel view of the book. So far, the critique on the novel has mainly been focused on the workings of time on memory; however, the present paper investigates how psychological defense mechanisms blur the protagonist’s perception of reality and distort his memories. This paper also attempts to attract scholarly interest in the study of psychological defense mechanisms in the study of The Sense of an Ending which has so far been to the best of our knowledge overlooked

Introduction Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is an opening in the interventricular septum. 30-50% of patients with congenital heart disease have VSD. Objective The aim of the study was to determine the dependence of the left ventricular diastolic dimension (LVD), left ventricular systolic dimension (LVS), shortening fraction (SF), left atrium (LA), pulmonary artery truncus (TPA) on the body surface and compare their values among experimental, control and a group of healthy children. Values of maximal systolic gradient pressure (Pvsd) of VSD were compared with children from one experimental and control group. Method Children were divided into three groups: experimental (32 children with VSD that were to go to surgery), control (20 children with VSD who did not require surgery) and 40 healthy children. Measurements of LVD, LVS, SF, LA, TPA were performed in accordance to recommendations of the American Echocardiographic Association. The value of Pvsd was calculated from the maximal flow velocity (V) in VSD using the following formula: Pvsd=4xV? (mm Hg). Results For children from the experimental group, the relationship between the body surface and the variability of the LVD was explained with 56.85%, LVS with 66.15%, SF with 4.9%, TPA with 58.92%. For children from the control group, the relationship between the body surface and the variability of LVD was explained with 88.8%, LVS with 72.5%, SF with 0.42%, PA with 58.92%. For healthy children, the relationship between the body surface and the variabilitiy of the LVD was explained with 88.8%, LVS with 88.78%, SF with 5.25% and PA with 84.75%. There was a significant statistical difference between average values of Pvsd in the experimental and control group (p<0.02). Conclusion The presence of the large VSD has an influence on the enlargement of LVD, LVS, SF, TPA. The enlargement of the size of the pulmonary artery depends on the presence of VSD and there is a direct variation in the magnitude of the shunt. There is a relationship and significant dependence of the LVS and LVD on the body surface. There is no statistically significant dependence between SF and body surface.

The problem of studying adaptive potential of mothers who have children with cerebral paralysis is considered which may be useful for the choice of diagnosis and preventive accesses in the framework of preventive measures directed to the prevention of disturbances of personality and diseases under stress events of life. Analysis data of mechanisms’ structure of psychological defense in the age dynamics compared to control group of women having healthy children. Psychological adaptive mechanisms are differentiated which help to transform negative internal emotions into more adequate form taking into account specificity of the situation in which mothers with such children are. Mechanisms of controlling behavior are revealed which have preventive function and increase personal resources of women-mother in the situation of stress events which are associated with her child disease.

The purpose of psychological protection is to maintain the integrity of the "self-concept" of the individual by protecting his consciousness from negative traumatic experiences, fear of failure, anxiety or uncertainty in their actions. The authors who studied this phenomenon in sports note that the psychological protection of the athlete - is a system of mechanisms and methods of mental self-regulation of consciousness and behavior of the individual in extreme mental conditions. Psychological defense mechanisms are manifested in students as a regulatory system that is activated in a situation of internal or external conflict. Based on it, students often show such a defense mechanism as substitution, regression, and compensation. Considering the manifestation of protective mechanisms in boys and girls, we obtained the following indicators: reactive formations (73% in girls and 51% in boys) and projection (73% in girls and 54% in boys) (p <0.05); in boys prevails: suppression (65% in boys and 45% in girls) and intellectualization (69% in boys and 56.1% in girls) (p <0.05). We found differences in the choice of the dominant mechanism of psychological protection by swimming students. The leading mechanism in the studied contingent is substitution, and the least preferred is suppression. The study identified the manifestation of the main mechanisms of psychological protection in students who swim and analyzed certain types of protection with a description of the specific features of the system of protective mechanisms and the level of their impact depending on gender differences.

Introduction: During pregnancy in the body of a healthy woman there are physiological and psychological changes that contribute to the bearing a child and prepare the female for future labour and motherhood. In women who experience failure at the stage of fertilization or during pregnancy, as a result of prolonged negative emotional states, psycho-emotional stress develops. The aim of the research was to study the psycho-emotional state of women with infertility in history, whose pregnancy resulted from extracorporal fertilization (IVF), and to develop methods for reducing their anxiety. Materials and methods: At the first stage, the initial psycho-emotional state of 60 women in the second trimester, whose pregnancy resulted from IVF (Group I), was studied; the control group consisted of 20 healthy women with a physiological course of pregnancy (Group II). At the second stage, 10 art therapy exercises with a requestioning of pregnant women from Group I were conducted for improving their psycho-emotional state. Results: Women of Group I had a high level of both situational anxiety (SA) and the personal one (PA). The prevalent type of the psychological component of gestational dominant was anxiety and euphoric types (58.3%). In one third of women with burdened gynecological history examined mild or masked depression was diagnosed. 43 pregnant women from Group I used a method of psychocorrection – art therapy, which included colouring “antistress” pictures of perinatal topic, making flowers from paper and creating a collage of dreams. Conclusions: After the art therapy course, a high level of SA (from 46.5% to 7.0%) and OA (from 48.8% to 32.6%) decreased, the index of the optimal type of the psychological component of gestational dominant increased from 25.6% to 53.5%. The number of women without depression increased from 62.8% to 93%.

ABSTRACT Upon microbial challenge, organs at various anatomic sites of the body employ different innate immune mechanisms to defend against potential infections. Accordingly, microbial pathogens evolved to subvert these organ-specific host immune mechanisms to survive and grow in infected organs. Francisella tularensis is a bacterium capable of infecting multiple organs and thus encounters a myriad of organ-specific defense mechanisms. This suggests that F. tularensis may possess specific factors that aid in evasion of these innate immune defenses. We carried out a microarray-based, negative-selection screen in an intranasal model of Francisella novicida infection to identify Francisella genes that contribute to bacterial growth specifically in the lungs of mice. Genes in the bacterial tryptophan biosynthetic pathway were identified as being important for F. novicida growth specifically in the lungs. In addition, a host tryptophan-catabolizing enzyme, indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1), is induced specifically in the lungs of mice infected with F. novicida or Streptococcus pneumoniae. Furthermore, the attenuation of F. novicida tryptophan mutant bacteria was rescued in the lungs of IDO1−/− mice. IDO1 is a lung-specific innate immune mechanism that controls pulmonary Francisella infections.

The immune response in animals and hu-mans is a biological defense mechanism against negative environmental factors. The immune system is a complex of organs and cells of the body, that reacts (protects) against foreign objects-protozoas and hel-minths. The aim of the study was to investi-gate the dynamics of cellular factors of the immune system of healthy minks, experi-mentally invaded with eimeriidosis against the background of specific immunocorrec-tive therapy. To study the dynamics of T-lymphocytes in the blood of animals, being at the specific immunocorrective therapy, a single-center prospective blind randomized comparative study was conducted in parallel groups. At the initial stage of the study, 56 male minks were isolated from the general population. The first group of clinically healthy animals was the control group. From the second to the sixth groups, animals were spontaneously infected with eimerias and isospores. Animals from the third and fifth groups were treated with coccidiostatic "Stop-coccid". Mink of the 4th and 6th groups received the drug "Ametherm 5%". Minks in the 5th and 6th groups after treat-ment with coccidiostatic were adninistered an immunomodulatory drug of plant origin "Phytodoc-immunostim". The 7th group served as an additional control and received a placebo-water with starch. Thus, the analy-sis of the results of the clinical study showed that the use of specific and immunocorrec-tive therapy has a positive effect on the dy-namics of T-lymphocyte levels in the blood of animals with eimeriidosis. In group 3, where infected minks were treated with "Stop-coccid", the level of T-lymphocytes increased by 35.8% to 41.1%; in the 4th group (administered "Ametherm 5%") the level of T-lymphocytes rose from 35.2% to 42.3%; in the 5th group (administered “Stop-coccid” and immunomodulator) the level of T-lymphocytes changed from 36.5% to 43,0% in the 6-th experimental group (treated "Ametherm 5%" and immunomodu-lator) the level of T-lymphocyte growth from 38.6% to 43.9 per cent.

Very few researches concerning women addictions are done up to day. This paper tries to define basic similarities and differences in defense mechanisms used by women alcohol and opiate addicts.Method:Sample of alcohol and opiate female addicts (30 patients in each group) plus control group (30 women) with no psychiatric diagnosis were questioned with Defense Style Questionnaire - DSQ 40 (Andrews, Singh, Bond, 1993).Results:There were found no statistically relevant differences between two experimental and one control group concerning mature defense mechanism use. Significant differences were found in neurotic and immature defense mechanism use: alcohol addicts use prevalently neurotic mechanisms and immature mechanisms prevail among opiate addicts.Conclusions:In our research mostly used neurotic defense mechanisms by alcohol addicts were: pseudoaltruism, idealization, and undoing. The mostly used immature defense mechanisms among opiate addicts were: phantasy, isolation, devaluation, denial and splitting.

Abstract Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most prevalent severe motor disability among children. The aim of this work was to assess autonomic dysfunction in children with cerebral palsy clinically and electrophysiologically .The study was carried out on forty children with cerebral palsy their age ranged from 4-12 years and twenty healthy children with matched age and sex as control group. CP children were subjected to questionnaire for autonomic dysfunction symptoms. Both CP children and Control group were assessed for Sympathetic Skin Response and Heart rate variability. Most of children had quadriplegic spastic cerebral palsy (82.5%). Based on Gross motor function classification system (GMFCS) classification the majority of children were in levels 4 and 5. The prevalence of autonomic dysfunction symptoms was 80% for thermoregulatory abnormalities (cold extremities), chronic constipation 65%, sleep disturbance 52.5%, loss of appetite 47.5%, sweating abnormalities 40% , recurrent nausea and/or vomiting 25%, increased sensitivity to light or dark 22.5% and bloating 15%. The percentage of unelicited Sympathetic skin response in CP children was 47.5% and 60% in upper limbs and lower limbs respectively, all of them were in level 4 and 5 of GMFCS. 20% of CP children had postural hypotension. Mean Heart rate of CP children was significantly increased more than healthy children upon head tilt test. Sympathetic Skin Response and Heart rate variability were proven to be simple and non invasive procedures in investigating autonomic dysfunction in CP children.

Cerebral palsy is one of the commonest children's physical handicaps with frequency of 1.5-3/1000. Beside many other disturbances, these children may have serious disorders caused by dental diseases. Concerning this fact, the objective of our study was to examine children with cerebral palsy in our country and determine condition of dental health and suggest adequate protective measures. A total of 116 children, 3-18 years old, with cerebral palsy were examined and the results were compared to the control group of healthy children of the same age. Among healthy children, 7-10 years old, 66.3% had healthy parodontium, while none of children with cerebral palsy had healthy parodontium. Children, 11-14 years old with cerebral palsy had higher percentage of untreated caries, but lower percentage of filled teeth (18.7%) compared to healthy children (55.0%). Children, 15-18 years old with cerebral palsy had significantly higher percentage of extracted teeth (10.6%) than healthy children (4.1%) and more often orthodontic anomalies (70.6%), compared to healthy children (46.9%). Results of these study indicate that children with cerebral palsy need special and planned dental care.
