Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and rate of healing of Aloe vera gel in treatment of chronic wounds, to compare the effectiveness of Aloe vera gel with conventional dressing (normal saline and povidone iodine) and to assess the percentage reduction of wound healing with Aloe vera gel dressing.Methods: The study was conducted at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College and Hospital, DPU University, for a period of 2 months (from January 2017 to March 2017) and is a prospective and comparative randomized type of study using 50 cases (Group A and Group B, 25 each). The study was approved by the Institute’s Ethics Committee.Results: Data analysis showed that at the end of 4 weeks, mean surface area in Group A is reduced to 4.58 cm2 from 9.79 cm2 which is higher than that in the control group. Also, the average rate of healing in Aloe vera gel is more than control group. Percentage reduction in ulcer surface area was calculated to be much more in Group A as compared to Group B.Conclusions: The study concluded that Aloe vera gel is highly effective in treatment of chronic ulcers and stimulates the growth of wound healing. Thus, reducing the hospital stay. Apart from being efficacious in wound healing, Aloe vera gel is safe product. No allergic reactions/infections were associated with Aloe vera gel. Aloe vera gel not only heals faster but is also cost effective.

Background The present study aimed to prepare effective silk derived formulations in combination with plant extract (Aloe vera gel) to speed up the wound healing process in diabetic mice. Methods Diabetes was induced in albino mice by using alloxan monohydrate. After successful induction of diabetes in mice, excision wounds were created via biopsy puncture (6 mm). Wound healing effect of silk sericin (5%) and silk fibroin (5%) individually and in combination with 5% Aloe vera gel was evaluated by determining the percent wound contraction, healing time and histological analysis. Results The results indicated that the best biocompatible silk combination was of 5% silk fibroin and 5% Aloe vera gel in which wounds were healed in 13 days with wound contraction: 98.33 ± 0.80%. In contrast, the wound of the control group (polyfax) healed in 19 day shaving 98.5 ± 0.67% contraction. Histological analysis revealed that the wounds which were treated with silk formulations exhibited an increased growth of blood vessels, collagen fibers, and much reduced inflammation. Conclusion It can be concluded that a combination of Bombyx mori silk and Aloe vera gel is a natural biomaterial that can be utilized in wound dressings and to prepare more innovative silk based formulations for speedy recovery of chronic wounds.

Background: In the present research study, the rate of cutaneous wound healing and contraction rate in healthy rabbits using Aloe vera pulp was studied.Methods: Ten healthy rabbits were used for the study. They were divided into two groups consisting of five rabbits each. Cutaneous wounds were made on the lumbar region of each rabbit using a template which ensured that the wounds were of the same size in all the rabbits. 5ml of Aloe vera gel was applied to the wounds of the animals in the test group, while nothing was applied to the wound area of the animals in the control group. The wound area in each group was measured for a period of 21 days, using a venire caliper and tracing paper which was used to trace the wound area. Tissue samples were removed from the wound area in both experimental and control groups and subjected to routine histological analysis, also, morphometric analysis was performed.Results: The rate of wound contraction and mean centripetal contraction was calculated in both groups and graphically represented using Microsoft Excel. The results showed that animals who were treated with Aloe vera gel had a greater wound contraction rate, as well as rapid wound closure. The micrographs showed a thicker epithelial layer, with thinner collagen fibers in the dermis of experimental animals compared to the control group. There was also an abundant capillary bed at the dermal-epidermal junction in the experimental group, compared to the control group.Conclusion:  Aloe vera may increase the rate of wound healing by accelerating epithelial migration, and may also play a role in neo-vascularization of the newly healed area.Keywords: Aloe vera, Cutaneous Wounds, Rabbits, Wound Contraction, Wound Healing

Background: Anti-inflammatory role of Aloe vera gel is well established. Diclofenac is extensively used for acute and chronic inflammation. The present study was conducted to compare dried Aloe vera gel and diclofenac effects on sodium and potassium balance in hypertensive rats. Material and Methods: This experimental study was conducted at Sargodha Medical College from May to November 2016. Twenty-four healthy male Sprague Dawley rats 7-8 weeks of age were included in study. Any unhealthy-looking rat was excluded from the study. Rats were equally and randomly divided into four groups Normal control (group A), Model control (group B), Aloe vera (group C) & Diclofenac (group D). Hypertension was induced by a 20 % sucrose diet in all groups except group A in 8 weeks’ time. Group B, C & D received distilled water and Aloe vera dried gel 400 mg/kg & diclofenac powder 12 mg/kg body weight respectively orally between 8 to 10 weeks. Serum and urine analysis was performed for hematocrit, sodium, and potassium concentrations at zero, eight and ten weeks. Twenty-four-hour urinary sodium excretion was calculated. Data was analyzed using Graph Pad Prism version 6. Result: After 2-week administration of aloe vera and diclofenac powder, serum potassium significantly decreased in Group C (p <0.001) while increased in Group B and D (p <0.001) as compared to group A. Urinary sodium concentration and excretion increased significantly in Group C (p <0.01) as compared to Group A whereas result of Group D was insignificant. No significant change in serum sodium and hematocrit of any group was observed. Conclusion: Aloe vera causes less sodium retention than diclofenac but decreases serum potassium contrary to the effect of diclofenac in hypertensive rats.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of Aloe Vera gel in management of dry socket after surgical removal of 3rd molar. Study Design & Setting: From December 2020 to November 2021, a descriptive research was conducted in the Section of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences, Jamshoro, Hyderabad, Sindh. Methodology: Total 70 patients were included and divided equally in two groups i.e. Group-A (Alveora dressing) and Group-B (Controls). Dry socket, pre-operative assessment was carried out on the basis of pain Visual analog scale (VAS) and healing index. Socket was irrigated with sterile saline 0.9% in experimental group. In control group, patient were given tablet Panadol 1gm SOS. Patients were evaluated post operatively at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd day on the basis of pain (VAS) and healing index. Results: In group-A mean postoperative VAS at day-1, day-2 and day-3 was 6.69±2.59, 3.17±2.39 and 1.14±1.03 respectively. In group-B it was 7.77±2.03, 6.97±2.14 and 4.57±2.57. In group-A, mean postoperative healing scale at day-1, day-2 and day-3 was 2.83±0.56, 3.49±0.61 and 4.37±0.73 respectively and in group-B it was 2.31±0.58, 2.63±0.69 and 3.26±0.65 respectively. Significant association of pain intensity at day-2 and day-3 and healing index (at day-1, day-2 and day-3) was observed. Conclusion: Aloe Vera gel significantly reduced postoperative pain and improve healing index. Keywords: Effectiveness, Aloe Vera Gel, Dry Socket, Surgical Removal, Third Molar

Abstrak Luka adalah hilang atau rusaknya sebagian jaringan tubuh yang menyebabkan gangguan kontinuitas jaringan tersebut. Lidah buaya telah digunakan sebagai pengobatan tradisional diberbagai kebudayaan diseluruh dunia. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat pengaruh gel lidah buaya terhadap penyembuhan luka, yang ditinjau dari jarakpinggir luka. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimental dengan post-test only control group design. Subjek penelitian terdiri dari 24 ekor tikus Wistar betina yang dibagi menjadi empat kelompok; satu kelompok kontrol dan tiga kelompok perlakuan. Kelompok kontrol diberikan NaCl fisiologis sebagai terapi luka sedangkan kelompok perlakuandiberikan gel lidah buaya dengan berbagai frekuensi pemberian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian olesan gel lidah buaya tidak memberikan pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap penyembuhan luka. Pada setiap variabel jarak pinggir luka terlihat bahwa kelompok kontrol memiliki hasil penyembuhan luka yang lebih baik dari hari ke hari. Secara umum, pada tujuh hari pertama (fase hemostasis dan inflamasi) ukuran jarak pinggir luka memiliki perbedaan yang bermakna (p<0,05). Pada hari-hari selanjutnya pada fase proliferasi, ukuran jarak pinggir luka secara umum tidak memiliki perbedaan yang bermakna (p>0,05). Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah pemberian gel lidah buaya tidak lebih efektif dibandingkan NaCl fisiologis terhadap penyembuhan luka yang ditinjau dari jarak pinggir luka.Kata kunci:  gel lidah buaya, penyembuhan luka, jarak pinggir lukaAbstract A wound is a laceration or break in the living tissue which causes continuity damage within the tissue. Aloe vera has been used for traditional medication in many cultures all over the world. The objective of this study was to see the effect of Aloe vera gel on wound healing based on the wound edge distance. This research was experimental with post-test only control group design. Twenty-four female Wistar rats were divided into four groups; one control group and three treatment groups. The control group was given fisiological NaCl solution for open wound therapy andtreatments groups were given Aloe vera gel with varying frequencies of application. The results shows that Aloe vera wasn’t have a significant effect on wound healing. In each variable of wound edge distance, results show that the control group heals better from day to day. As seen in the general, in the seven first days (hemostatis and nflammation phase), the distance of wound edge was significantly different (p<0.05). In the following days (prol iferation phase), the distance of wound edge generally wasn’t significantly different (p>0.05). The conclusion of this study is Aloe vera gel isn’t effective when compared to fisiologic NaCl solution in healing the wound, based on the wound edge distance.   Keywords:  Aloe vera gel, wound healing, wound edge distance

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of topical application of an Aloe vera gel combined or not with microcurrent application on the healing of skin wounds surgically induced in Wistar rats. METHODS: The animals were randomly divided into the following groups: control group, animals topically treated with Aloe vera, animals treated with a microcurrent, and animals receiving topical application of Aloe vera combined with microcurrent application. RESULTS: The results indicated differences in wound healing between the various treatments when compared to the control group. Tissue hyperplasia was lower in the control group compared to the other treated groups. Accelerated wound healing was observed in the group treated with Aloe vera compared to control. Animals submitted to microcurrent application only and the group treated with microcurrent plus Aloe vera presented an earlier onset of the proliferative phase compared to the control group and animals treated with Aloe vera gel alone. Morphometric data confirmed the structural findings. CONCLUSION: Simultaneous application of Aloe vera gel and microcurrent is an excellent choice for the treatment of open wounds thus indicating a synergistic action of these two applications.

The study was conducted on sixteen streptozotocin induced diabetic rats to investigate whether the topical application of Aloe Vera gel and alcoholic Aloe Vera leaf extract could improve the wound healing in diabetic rats. The rats were weight, matched, and placed in to four groups 4 rats of each group. Full thickness circular skin wound (2cm in diameter) was experimentally created dorsal to the neck area of each rat. Animals in group (1) left without dressing as a control group. Animals in group (2 and 3) were treated topically with Aloe Vera gel (100%) and alcoholic Aloe Vera leaf extracts (100%) respectively, while the animals of group (4) were treated with povidone iodine (4%). Treated groups were dresses twice daily for 14 successive days. The treated wound in groups 2, and 3 were significantly healed faster in comparison to the wound of control group. The effect produced by the Aloe Vera with reference to the wound contraction, wound closure, decreased in surfaces area of wound, and tissue regeneration at the wound site. Histologically wounds treated with Aloe Vera show increase in macrophages, fibroblast migration, collagen regeneration and epithelialization compared with the control group. The wet, dry granulation tissue weight, and hydroxyproline content increased significantly when compared to control. Aloe Vera was seen exhibited antimicrobial activity against some pathogenic microorganism. In conclusion Aloe Vera have strong wound healing property and effective as topical preparation and formulated as fairly economical therapeutic agent for wound management.

Aloe vera is a medicinal plant used to treat various skin diseases. The effects of using aloe vera gel on the healing process were investigated by microscopic methods, cell counting, and TGF-β gene expression in the wound bed. Sixty Wistar rats weighing 200–250 g were placed under anesthesia in sterile conditions. A square 1.5 cm × 1.5 cm wound was made on the back of the neck. The rats were divided into control and 2 experimental groups. Additionally, the control and experimental groups were separated into 3 subgroups corresponding to 4, 7, and 14 days of study. In the first experimental group, aloe vera was used twice on the wound. The second experimental group received aloe vera overtreatment once on the wound. The positive control group received daily application of 1% phenytoein cream following surgical wound creation. The control group did not receive any treatment. This tissue was examined using histological staining (H&E) and Masson’s Trichrome. Wound surface and wound healing were evaluated separately. TGF-β gene expression was analyzed by RT–PCR. Results showed that fibroblasts in both experimental groups were significantly increased, thereby acceleration wound healing. Application of aloe vera gel will increase TGF-β gene expression, ultimately accelerating the wound healing process.

Background: Research has proved that Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and immunomodulator properties that can accelerate the healing process. These properties could be beneficial in the tooth extraction wound-healing process. Neutrophils are the first inflammatory cells to invade and are the predominant cell markers in the wound for 24 hours after injury. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) provide initial protection against micro-organisms, as they engulf and digest foreign bodies. Purpose: The aim of this study was to prove the effect of Aloe vera 90% gel application on the PMN count in the healing process of Cavia cobaya following tooth extraction. Methods: This laboratory experimental research was done using Post-Test Only Control Group Design. The lower incisive of twelve male Cavia cobayas were extracted then divided into four groups. Group P1 and P3 had 90% Aloe vera gel applied into the socket and sutured; group K1 and K3, received no 90% Aloe vera gel application and acted as controls. Samples from group P1 and K1 were terminated and had their mandibula taken one day after tooth extraction, and those from group P3 and K3 were terminated after three days. Tissues were then processed into histology slides, and PMN cells were counted. Results: There were significant differences in the PMN count between groups K1, P1, and K3 compared with P3 (p < 0.05). Higher PMN count was shown on the group containing Aloe vera 90% gel compared with control group, both on day one and three after tooth extraction. Conclusion: Aloe vera 90% gel can increase the PMN count in the inflammation phase of the tooth extraction wound-healing process.

Background: A wound is a breakdown in the protective function of the skin or loss of continuity of epithelium, with or without loss of underlying connective tissues, muscles, nerves, bones following injury to the skin, surgery, a blow, cut, chemicals, heat, cold, friction, shear force, pressure or diseases such as leg ulcers or carcinomas. A study was undertaken to determine the healing properties of Aloe vera gel on epidermal wounds in rabbits.Methods: Twelve adult rabbits were divided into two groups randomly of six each representing the treatment and control respectively. A pair of wounds measuring 2cm x 2cm each was created on the back of each rabbit lateral to the spinal cord. The wounds were treated with homogenized Aloe vera gel while the wounds on control group were treated with normal saline. Wound contraction was measured on days 5, 9 and 12 representing the inflammatory, proliferative and maturation phases of wound healing respectively. Blood samples were collected on days 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 for analysis.Results: Animals treated with Aloe vera gel had significantly (p<0.05) faster rates of healing with shorter days of scab fall off than the control and showed significant (P<0.05) changes in the packed cell volume, mean corpuscular volume, lymphocyte and neutrophil counts.Conclusions: The study concluded that Aloe vera was effective in treating epidermal wounds in rabbits over the control. An improvement occured in haematological profile of the experimental animals and these findings will go a long way in expanding the horizon of clinical application of this plant in solving wound healing problems in both humans and other animal species.
