The article examines the question of the impact of the pandemic crisis on the basic beliefs of an individual. The results of a comparative study of the structure of basic beliefs during the period of personal crisis, pandemic and outside the crisis period are presented. Based on the analysis of the results of the study, it is concluded that in a pandemic situation, the severity of the conviction that the world around is beautiful and full of goodness decreases, while the «Image of the Self» remains steadily positive. A person perceives the situation of a pandemic detachedly, as an event not related to his individual life.

The chapter explains the theoretical framework that guides the analysis in subsequent chapters and introduces a model for understanding emotional experience rooted in the semiotic phenomenology of C. S Peirce. This model allows for the explication of diverse modes of experience and explains the impact of habits and values in the interpretation of signs during ceremonial performance. As selves and interpersonal relationships are implicated in semiosis, experience becomes affective, linking perceptual, physiological, cultural, and public judgments in ongoing processes and projects of future-oriented flourishing. This four-step sequence---affect, emotion-appraisal, feeling, emotive is grounded in the self and its place in the world.

Purpose The innovations in fundamentals coupled with noise traders induce co-movement in diverse markets. This co-movement in equity markets which is evidenced higher during the turmoil period influences economic fundamentals of a country dissimilar in nature. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether economic fundamentals or investors’ behavior attributable to disturbances across the world are the rationale behind the crisis transmission, and thereby distinguish fundamental-based contagion from investor-induced contagion. Design/methodology/approach Initially, the study investigates the role of macroeconomic fundamentals and stock returns on crisis occurrence using panel probit estimates. Additionally, ordinary least squares estimates controlling the influence of fundamentals on domestic return capture the discrete country effect measuring the influence of domestic as well as foreign economic fundamentals along with foreign returns on the domestic stock index. Findings The empirical results reveal that foreign country stock index returns are having a significant influence on domestic returns besides a prominent role in crisis occurrence. The binary probit model confirmed the influence of both macroeconomic factors and foreign returns in crisis occurrence. The OLS estimates found evidence for investor-induced contagion in the crisis period where the effects of economic fundamentals are small in comparison to foreign market returns that are mainly dominant in pre- and post-crisis period. Research limitations/implications The propagation of crisis from one market to other would enable the policy makers to make clear regulations at right time to control for the crisis in future. The results can help the policy makers as well as investors in reducing the impact of the crisis in future by clearly monitoring the behavior of the factors under study. Originality/value The current study addresses the role of macro fundamentals and investors influence in crisis propagation. Adopting subprime crisis of 2008-2009 as a reference point and separating the sample period into pre-crisis, crisis and post-crisis period, the study explains how badly the other 30 markets impacted the crisis that emerged in the USA.

This essay first appeared in German in Magdalena Tzaneva, ed. Nachtflug der Eule: 150 Stimmen zum Werk von Niklas Luhmann. Gedenkbuch zum 15. Todestag von Niklas Luhmann (8. Dezember 1927 Lüneburg – 6. November 1998 Oerlinghausen). Berlin: LiDi EuropEdition (2013), 73–100. A shorter version of the essay was published in Hans-Georg Soeffner, and Thea D. Boldt, eds. Fragiler Pluralismus, Wiesbaden: VS Springer (2014), 207–24. The present translation for Entangled Religions – Interdisciplinary Journal for the Study of Religious Contact and Transfer is by Nicola Morris.   The article describes the emergence of pluralism within the process of globalization and the impact of this development upon individuals communication and the definitions of the ‘self’ and the ‘Other’. The author illustrates the pitfalls of the human tendency to view the world from an ethnocentric perspective and with the corresponding attitude. He argues that in ‘open societies’, successful citizens will be capable of recognising and articulating distinctions between individuals, as well as between groups, beliefs, lifestyles and attitudes. These citizens must also be aware and capable of adapting for their purposes the full repertoire of language games and role games in their social world, in order to perceive and utilise comprehensive systems such as frameworks for cooperation. These skills will help them implement ‘maxims of communication’ and ‘existential hypotheses’.

Since 1974, U.N. peacekeepers on the divided Mediterranean island of Cyprus have patrolled a buffer zone that divides the Greek-leaning, government-controlled south from the northern third, the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The economy of Northern Cyprus resembles that of other small islands with negligible industrial production that rely on the service sector to generate income. What makes Northern Cyprus unique, however, is that the rest of the world does not acknowledge it as a separate political entity. This limits economic functions because the “country” cannot trade freely and depends on Turkey, the only nation to formally recognize Northern Cyprus.

ABSTRACTThe world situation shows that the Corona Virus is growing faster and faster. it proves that the community must be increasingly aware of everything. This virus has an impact on the lives of people throughout the world that affect the development of the development sector. The lives of adolescents were in fact affected along with the implementation of various policies to reduce the impact of this pandemic. The mental condition of adolescents is increasingly tested and not a few of them eventually become stressed. Stress is a sign that someone's thoughts become irrational / negative. One step that can be taken is by applying the Self Talk technique which is beneficial for the psychological development of adolescents. In applying this technique, teenagers will make it a habit to practice their perspective, which prioritizes their positive thoughts rather than negativity. This type of research used in this study is a qualitative research with descriptive methods that explain how to deal with the stress experienced by adolescents during the Corona Virus pandemic as it is today with the Self Talk technique. The purpose of this study is that adolescents can control their emotions and prioritize positive self talk while in certain conversations. Keywords: corona, adolescents, stress, self talk.

The paper explores the nature of macroeconomic interdependence in post-crisis Asia. Empirical evidence suggests that, relative to the pre-crisis period, output and price correlations in Asia have increased and the output and price impacts of shocks originating within the region have risen. This greater interdependence, however, did not come at the expense of a weaker economic tie with the rest of the world (as clearly demonstrated in the recent global economic crisis). Asian policymakers must better manage the region's growing macroeconomic linkages through greater cooperation — both to mitigate the impact of negative policy spillovers and to foster an environment in which regional and global links can continue to deepen.

The cognitive-personal features of patients diagnosed with breast cancer were studied, i.e. the degree of severity of post-traumatic reactions, the level of actual and personal anxiety, basic personal attitudes relating to the self-image and the surrounding world; the presence of depressive symptoms. As a result, individual post-traumatic stress reactions were highlighted, with distress reaching the level corresponding to the clinical picture of post-traumatic stress disorder. Subjects were registered with subdepression, i.e. pessimistic assessment of events and the self, the reduction of working capacity. Most patients have high rates of situational anxiety. At the same time, the overwhelming majority of patients do not exhibit high levels of personal anxiety. Methodology used: Mississippi Scale (MS, Mississippi Scale, Keane et al., 1988); Spalberger-Khanin's Scale of Situational and Personality Anxiety; Scale of basic beliefs (World Assumption Scale, WAS, Janoff-Bulman, 1982); Beck Depression Inventory (Depression Inventory, BDI, Beck & Steer, 1987). The results demonstrated that basic beliefs of patients have the following specificity: predominantly negative image of the self and the world, confidence in their own failure, inability to control the occurring events. Women suffer from decreasing sense of the value and significance of their selves. The world and surrounding people are perceived as unfriendly, dangerous and untrustworthy, probably due to the quality of social support and the attitude of others as a result of the disease. Thus, the variability of the psychological consequences of the disease and peculiarities of individual responses to the stress is most likely related not to the effectiveness of the treatment (all women in these sample have successfully completed the treatment), but rather to the personal and cognitive characteristics of patients, their basic beliefs and conceptions.

The subject of this research is the impact of information environment upon people’s psyche. Currently, the volume of information accessible to human vastly exceeds the ability to digest it. The emerging information overload leads to nervous exhaustion, worsening of memory, lapse of attention concentration, and stress. Thus, there are created favorable conditions for negative influences of the policy of “post-truth” upon personality, mentality, perception of the world, and system of relationship. Using the instruments of rationality, the policy of “post-truth” turns them against rational thinking of a person. Affecting emotions and referring to personal beliefs, “post-truth” enhances stigmatization not even denying the facts. The research methodology combines the methods of fundamental psychological mechanisms and patterns of the origin and functioning of human psyche; methods general psychological research; methods of studying mental processes, mentality and personality; methods of cognitive psychology; technologies of examination of cognitive processes and communication in computer networks. The main conclusion consists in the statements that in the conditions of information overload and time deficit for analysis, a person makes hasty decisions based on his previous experience; while “post-truth” can be countered only through the development of the ability of critical thinking, giving assessment, learning to analyze and form own opinion regarding events ongoing in the world.

Purpose has been defined as an active engagement toward goals that are meaningful to the self (i.e., personal meaningfulness) and contribute to the world beyond the self (BTS). These BTS contributions may reflect the intention to meet a wide range of needs from family financial needs to more macro-level concerns, including social injustices. This study investigates the efficacy of a school-based program called MPOWER expressly designed by the authors to cultivate the BTS aspect of purpose. Previous research suggests that the BTS aspect of purpose has beneficial effects on school engagement, goal-setting abilities and orientations, and ultimately school performance. Ninety-four students participated in this study that utilized a randomized, pre-test-post-test between-subjects design to evaluate MPOWER (52 in MPOWER and 42 in the control group). The ANCOVA results indicated a significant increase in the BTS aspect of purpose among program participants, compared to controls. Moreover, participants had higher post-test levels of general self-efficacy and grade point averages, and decreased performance-approach (e.g., playing to be the best, comparing self to others) and performance-avoidance (e.g., avoiding risks of failure, fear of social consequences) goal orientations. Findings can be used to design programs that aim to cultivate students’ intentions to contribute to the world beyond themselves, as well as associated personal benefits (i.e., goal orientations, self-efficacy, academic performance).
