With the urge to Africanise the curriculum following colonisation, many African countries are still wary of the educational initiatives from the developed countries. However, with the clear curriculum design and development guidelines provided by various national Quality Assurance bodies, African countries need not fear migrating curricula from developed countries. Drawing from the workshop experiences, authors of this paper illustrate the steps involved in migrating, contextualising and adapting a professional field of study in a multi-institutional partnership, with particular focus on the competence-based curriculum design and development process. The process of migrating higher education (HE) Administration, Leadership and Management curriculum taught at the University of Tampere (Finland) to a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education Leadership and Management (PGDHELM) curriculum at Uganda Management Institute (UMI) in partnership with the Makerere University and the University of Helsinki involved undertaking a needs assessment, training of trainers and adapting the programme to the UMI context. The training of trainers provided opportunity for the trainees to reflect and generate information on the status of HE leadership and management in Uganda. The curriculum was institutionalised by aligning it to the vision, mission and profile of UMI in the context of the existing internal and external Quality Assurance frameworks. This paper underscores the importance of involving stakeholders, taking into account national and institutional requirements in all the steps when migrating an academic curriculum.

El desarrollo  de competencias para la investigación en estudiantes de Educación Superior es una tarea ardua. Sin embargo, la formación de recursos humanos en investigación debe ser una de las tareas permanentes de las Universidades, esto debido a que posibilita a los países en desarrollo el poder acceder a mejores niveles de bienestar social en materia de crecimiento económico, producción de ciencia, tecnología y mejora de la calidad educativa. El presente reporte muestra los resultados del esfuerzo de los últimos 12 años del Centro Universitario de los Lagos de la Universidad de Guadalajara, quien tiene como eje fundamental la investigación y como parte inherente el desarrollo de competencias en investigación en estudiantes universitarios. Esperando que dichos recursos humanos que han sido formados en la investigación en un mediano y/o largo plazo vengan a incrementar, enriquecer y realizar el relevo generacional de los investigadores en la región centro occidente de México. DEVELOPMENT OF COMPETENCIES FOR RESEARCH IN HIGHER EDUCATION STUDENTS: AN EXPERIENCE IN MEXICO ABSTRACT The formation of human resources in research is an arduous task for Public Universities, especially in developing countries, must become a fundamental axis in reaching higher levels of social welfare in the matter of economic growth, production of science and technology and improvement of quality of education. At the moment a great disparity exists where developed countries, are “the unique” producers of knowledge and the developing countries are only consumers. In this work, we present the results of the effort of the last 12 years in the University of Guadalajara at Lagos de Moreno, which its fundamental axis is the scientific research. Like inherent part of the formation of university students, they will increase, enrich and to became in to the generational relief of the researchers in Jalisco state and perhaps of the Mexican Republic. Universities are increasingly engaged in marketization and are also expected to transform into more sustainable institutions and be change-agents pushing forward the movement of sustainable development. This article introduces an analytical framework originated by Hahn et al. (2015) for understanding tensions concerning corporate sustainability to the context of the Finnish university system in order to answer the following questions: What are the tensions relating to Finnish universities’ social and economic sustainability, and what strategies might universities use to cope with these tensions? Through analyzing interviews with university managers and officials from the Ministry of Education and Culture in Finland, we find that Hahn et al.’s framework is generally applicable in analyzing tensions of sustainability in universities, and we identify six tensions relating to the sustainability of Finnish universities. The tensions are related to (1) academic leadership and management legitimacy, (2) regional political tensions and university profiling, (3) political power over the university system, (4) changing academic work and profession, (5) academic autonomy and the role of the state, and (6) the future role of the university institution. Moreover, the article discusses issues regarding how to adapt the framework of corporate sustainability to the context of higher education.

Higher education is one of the key factors in the effort to improve the lives and well-being of a nation. The experience of developed countries in Asia showed that the quality of higher education correlated significantly with the increased competence of human resources as a whole which eventually forms a high competence in the global competition. Globalization proactively answered by the governments in various parts of the world through international cooperation in the form of teaching, research, and dedication to the university in the form of the internationalization program. Through descriptive qualitative method enriched by quantitative techniques with intrinsic case study design (intrinsic case study), this research found that the success of internationalization is driven by capacity building supported by horizontal and hands on leadership. Therefore, the leadership of a university is not only an academic but it must be a manager who is able to read the signs of change.

When it comes to course design in Higher Education, everything from learning theory and learning design theory to needs analysis and potential markets should shape our thinking. A group based course design task on the Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCert. HE) at the University of Greenwich (UoG) provided the context within which my colleagues and I were able to bring a key aspect of our professional experience and expertise to course development. Ourbusiness background and an interest in strategic modelling in business led us to adopt the ‘STEEPLE’ model, which is an extension of the ‘PEST’ and ‘PESTLE’ models that preceded it and which is used in strategic decision making in business worldwide.

PurposeMedical education is an evidence-driven professional field that operates in an increasingly regulated environment as compared to other fields within universities. The purpose of this paper is to establish the extent to which Porter’s five competitive forces framework (Porter, 2008) can drive the management of medical schools in Australia.Design/methodology/approachDrawing on data from semi-structured interviews with over 20 staff from 6 case study Australian medical schools, this paper explores Australian medical education, by looking at the current policy context, structure and interactions between organizations within the system.FindingsThe findings provide evidence that environmental forces affect the nature of competition in medical education, and that competitive advantage can be gained by medical schools from a sustained analysis of the industry in which they operate in. Consequently, it is possible to apply a pre-dominantly profit-oriented framework to higher education.Research limitations/implicationsAs an industry facing increasing pressure toward marketization and competition, the findings provide sufficient evidence that an analysis of higher education as an industry is possible.Practical implicationsThe findings provide evidence that strategic leadership and management in higher education should encompass greater levels of delegation and decision making at all levels. Effective leadership should focus on creating an inspiring vision of the future through a sustained analysis of the industry in which they operate.Originality/valueThe study has made a key contribution through an industry analysis of Australian medical education, which provide important implications for leadership and management in higher education. The study is of significant value to researchers as well as senior management in higher education.

The evolution from an information-based economy to a knowledge-based society requires higher education to produce intellectual outputs which match market and society needs by improving its educational process and outputs. Curriculum, as a core factor in refining this process, is therefore a key part of the transformation. management solutions such as knowledge management (KM) or supply-chain management (SCM) have been applied to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of higher education but were mostly applied at an administrative level. To improve the quality of education to meet industry and society needs requires a holistic management of the curriculum design and development process. This empirical research in Thailand proposes a knowledge supply chain (KSC) approach as a potential solution, which integrates theories and practices of KM and SCM to design an e-tourism curriculum to meet the industry and society needs in the context of the Greater Mekong sub-region (GMS).

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to show how transdisciplinarity is woven into the key curriculum components of individually negotiated work-based learning (WBL) programmes and to focus upon the performative value of knowledge in the work context. Design/methodology/approach – This paper draws upon WBL academic literature and the authors 22 years operational experience of WBL. Findings – The paper suggests that while university-level WBL can enhance the performance of organizations and individuals it is also inherently challenging and challenged by the hegemony of subject disciplines and disciplinary-based university structures. WBL is concerned with knowledge which is often unsystematic, socially constructed and is action focused in order to achieve outcomes of significance to work. This contests the supremacy of the role of the university in curriculum design, delivery and validation of knowledge and means that work-based knowledge is often seen as transdisciplinary rather than conforming to traditional subject disciplines (Boud and Solomon, 2001). Research limitations/implications – Central to the distinctive nature of university WBL programmes is the role of the external organization as a partner with the university and the individual learner in the planning of learning activities which are intended to have significance for the workplace. For individual knowledge to become organizational knowledge, and thus fully contribute to the intellectual capital of the organization, it must be shared and accepted by others. It follows that a key concern for organizations must be the facilitation of the recognition of knowledge and this goes beyond using a transdisciplinary lens when guiding and assessing the work of individual higher education students. Practical implications – The paper has practical implications for the design and facilitation of WBL programmes at higher education level. Originality/value – Provides an informed and sustained examination of the concept of WBL and knowledge.

A atual pressão mundial pela conscientização ambiental atingiu diferentes instituições tais como empresas, instituições filantrópicas e universidades. Estas, como formadoras de opinião e prestadoras de serviços à sociedade, transmitem a conscientização ambiental por meio da gestão socioambiental. Desta forma, o objetivo do trabalho, de natureza exploratório-descritiva, é construir o conhecimento sobre o tema gestão sócio ambiental em instituições de ensino, utilizando o Knowledge Development Process – Constructivist (ProKnow-C) como instrumento de intervenção. Como resultados identificou-se um Portfólio Bibliográfico (PB) composto por 14 artigos e, através deste PB, constatou-se que os periódicos International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education e Journal of Cleaner Production são os mais alinhados ao tema. O artigo mais citado do PB é Toward sustainable management: the University of Michigan Housing Division's approach. O autor Shriberg, M. é o autor com mais trabalhos no PB e os autores Velazquez, L. e Munguia, N. são os mais citados no PB. A palavra-chave mais utilizada no PB é Higher Education seguida por sustainable development, sustainability e Environmental Management.

There has come an urgent necessity to reconstruct the university building and dormitory on the basis of detailed planning and researches as well as to plan the landscape architecture specifically dedicated to teachers, employees and students step by step according to the standard of higher education organizations. We aim to implement the project taking accounts of not only designs of university campuses in developed countries but also higher education trends in our own country and the mission of Mongolian State University of Agriculture /MULS. The significance of landscape planning is immense. But there is a lack of green environment, convenience, recreation fields, appropriate design etc. at universities and colleges in Mongolia where students, teachers and employees gather in a large number. The internationalization and internationalization of higher education is one of the most actual topics related to education today. The number of foreign students in major higher education institutions is increasing, and international collaborations in the field of education and research are becoming more frequent. However, despite the fact that the topic is so tangible in proximity, we still know a small fragment about the process of internationalization of higher education, the factors that support and hinder the phenomenon. The theoretical significance of the present study is the analysis of the revealed literature and statistical data, while the practical significance is the comparative study of the research carried out in the international context depending on the number of FAO scholarship students coming to Hungary from African countries. Examining the territorial location of the sending countries within Africa, the question arises as to why these countries send students to developed countries, in this case Hungary. Is there a correlation between certain macroeconomic indicators and the mobility tendencies or territorial orientation of students who have received an FAO scholarship?
