In preparing the next generation of business professionals, educators need to take seriously the responsibility of empowering students with tools to assist them in their pursuits.  One area of interest is Emotional Intelligence.  Emotional Intelligence determines how students exercise self-control, zeal and persistence, and the ability to motivate themselves.  The purpose of the study is two-fold with respect to Emotional Intelligence.  First, the researchers will explore the differences of emotional intelligence examined by students’ discipline within the school of business in a liberal arts college.  Secondly, the researchers will analyze the implications for educators, administrators, researchers, and other interested parties.  Findings, conclusions, and recommendations will be presented.

To address sexual assault, many universities are implementing Bringing in the Bystander™ (BitB) training, a prevention program that aims to improve participants’ bystander self-efficacy and reduce rape myth acceptance. Although growing evidence supports the efficacy of BitB, data primarily have been amassed at one large public university, the University of New Hampshire, limiting the generalizability of intervention effectiveness. To address this gap, we made modifications to training structure and assessed BitB effectiveness among first-year students at a private Jesuit Catholic liberal arts college in Massachusetts. Using a within-subjects pre-/post-test survey design, we found that students’ (N = 164) bystander self-efficacy significantly increased and rape myth acceptance significantly decreased following training. Results indicate that BitB implementation is feasible and effective on a new campus despite modest modifications to training delivery and despite differences in religious affiliation, median income, and class size between the two campuses.

Cannabis is the illegal drug most used worldwide. Its long-term use increases the risk of depression and schizophrenia, causing a major public health problem. A validated questionnaire was applied to first year students of Instituto Universitário Egas Moniz to assess their intention regarding cannabis use. They do not consider cannabis to be much associated with well-being, they slightly consider the opinion of relatives, and they show a low intent to use the drug, believing themselves to have strong self-control. Scores are above average for 18-y.o. Portuguese students, except for belief in self-control.

Research is devoted to the study of the relationship of emotional intelligence of students with the results of the state exam in the adaptation of the school system for 5 years from the date of introduction. The sample consisted of 156 first-year students. Evaluation of the components of emotional intelligence was measured by self-report (EmIn questionnaire). There was a statistically significant correlation between the severity of different indicators of emotional intelligence of students passing the exam and the results of the three school subjects: Russian language, Mathematics, Social studies. It is shown that since the introduction in 2009 of compulsory exam the level of communication between the indicators of emotional intelligence and the results of the examination has changed. Adaptation processes to the introduction of the state exam lead to changes contingent of successful students: If at the time of the introduction of the exam more successful were students with higher EI, in the process of adaptation more successful became those with lower EI. It was shown that the components of EI, having the most important relationships with the results of the exam, are different for the considered subjects; the dynamics of these relationships has been revealed.

. The introduction to the paper outlines its aim to find ways of developing interpretative skills of the 5th-grade Suvorovites when teaching expressive reading. Materials and methods. The study is based on the analysis of psychological, pedagogical, and methodological literature, which help to teach the 5th-grade Suvorovites to deeply percept and understand literary text and subtext, and can foster the development of interpretative skills while teaching them to expressive reading. The research involves considering artistic interpretation as one of the most important directions of the literary development of reading Suvorovites. According to the study, the interconnection between the hermeneutic and axiological approaches to teaching expressive reading contributes to the development of recreational and creative imagination in the Suvorovites and reveals the deepest meanings of the work of fiction on a personal level. The results of the study. The study has determined the role of the hermeneutic and axiological aspects in the methodology of expressive reading. It has also considered the ways of building the interpretative competence in the younger adolescents of the Suvorov Military School through the work with the sounding word. Some features of the literary text perception by the Suvorovites have been analyzed, and the problems of the formation of the reader’s competence and interpretative skills have been identified, given a gender aspect. The paper also presents an interpretive analysis of the 5th-grade Suvorovites’ expressive reading of R. L. Stevenson’s ballad “Heather Honey” (translated by S. Ya. Marshak). This analysis of the Suvorovites work focuses on the development of emotional responsiveness, expansion of the intonation range, and teaching the empathetic principle in conjunction with the formation of ideas about the moral conceptual complex, which helps to deepen understanding of the ballad subtext and, therefore, not only improves the acting skills of the students but also cultivates their spiritual qualities (axiological aspect). Conclusion The study proves that the interconnection between the hermeneutic and axiological approaches to teaching expressive reading contributes to the efficient development of the interpretative skills of the Suvorovites-readers, allows them to penetrate the deepest meaning of the text, and forms the emotional intelligence and personal qualities of the first-year students of the Suvorov Military School. Keywords: expressive reading, interpretative abilities, hermeneutic approach, axiological approach, interpretative competence, acting analysis, emotional intelligence, text, subtext.

Background. Studies of various scholars confirm the relation between the application of stress coping strategies and emotional intelligence, but there is a lack of research about the relationship between individual coping strategies and emotional intelligence levels among the first- and the fourth-year students. The aim of the research was to reveal peculiarities of emotional intelligence and stress coping strategies of undergraduate students of physical education and sport study programs.Methods. The Shutte Self-Assessment Questionnaire was used to measure the level of emotional intelligence of the participants (Schutte & Malouff, 1999). The questionnaire composed by Grakauskas and Valickas (2006) was used to identify the stress coping strategies. It consists of four factors: social support factor, problem-solving factor, emotional discharge factor and avoidance factor. The research was based on the following ethical principles: confidentiality, anonymity, impartiality and privacy. The first- and the fourth-year students of the Lithuanian Sports University and Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences, Physical Education and Sports Programs were surveyed. The research sample consisted of 123 participants. Male participants comprised 66.7% of the sample, and the female participants comprised 33.3%. of the sample. The first-year undergraduates made up 57.7% of the sample, and the fourth-year undergraduates made up 42.3% of the sample.Results. Analyzing the data on the stress coping strategies according to the participants studying experience, it was found that the fourth-year students used the social support strategy more frequently in comparison with the first-year students. In addition, the fourth-year students applied emotional discharge and avoidance strategies more often than the first-year students. Comparing stress coping strategies and emotional intelligence according to the gender of participants, no statistically significant differences were found. There was a statistically significant relationship between the stress coping strategy and the ability to evaluate and express one’s emotions.Conclusions. Comparing emotional intelligence of the first- and the fourth-year students of physical education and sports study programs, no statistically significant differences were found. Comparison of stress coping strategies applied by the first- and the fourth-year students of physical education and sports degree programs revealed that the fourth-year students tended to use social support, emotional discharge and avoidance strategies more frequently than the first-year students. Comparison of stress coping strategies and emotional intelligence according to gender did not show any statistically significant differences. However, there was a statistically significant relationship between stress coping strategies and emotional intelligence, though it was a weak, but significant difference between emotional intelligence components such as the ability to express and manage emotions and problem-solving focused stress coping strategy. Keywords: stress, stress management strategies, emotional intelligence.

The paper examines how the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, the only one in the country dedicated to the work of African descended women artists, is used as a pedagogical tool in the interdisciplinary African Diaspora and the World course to help students further explore the depiction and visualization of diasporan aesthetics during their matriculation. From a visual culture perspective, this is a critical examination of the process of looking among non-art major college goers. The emphasis of the analysis is on the perceiver or the “educand” as Paulo Freire puts it, and ways she is trained to visually represent Africa and its diasporas. The article discusses how the subjects, first year students at a black liberal arts women’s college, are taught to construct meaning from and respond to imagery made by women artists from the diaspora. At the heart of the study is the response of the perceivers, through an Audio Narrative assignment, to artefacts that communicate an African and Afro-descended iconography.

The purpose of this study is to see whether there is a relationship between emotional intelligence and academic achievement. The study respondents were B.Tech first year students from the Agra region. Sampling is stratified, making sure that gender, race, socioeconomic status, and abilities are appropriately represented. The respondents are given Emotional Intelligence Inventory (EII–MM), developed by S. K. Mangal and Shubhra Mangal. It consists of 100 items under four scales .The analysis suggests that there is a significant relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Academic Achievement. IQ alone is no more the measure for success; emotional intelligence, social intelligence, and luck also play a big role in a person's success. This study contributes in acknowledging the fact that even engineering students’ academic achievements are attached with Emotional intelligence. Thus, teaching emotional and social skills only at the school level is not sufficient; this can be taught in engineering studies, as well for accomplishing high academic achievements.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between death anxiety and psychosocial functioning of medical students. Subjects were 50 first-year students, with instruments including the Death Anxiety Scale and the California Psychological Inventory. Product-moment correlations computed between test scores indicated significant, negative relationships between death anxiety and the California Psychological Inventory measures of Well-being ( r = –.52), Good Impression ( r = –.43), Self-control ( r = –.30), and Tolerance ( r = –.29). These results suggest that increased death anxiety may be associated with somewhat compromised social performance.
