The aim of our study was to assess the efficacy of a computed tomography (CT)-Navigation™ electromagnetic system compared to conventional CT methods for percutaneous lung biopsies (PLB). In this single-center retrospective study, data of a CT-Navigation™ system guided PLB (NAV-group) and conventional CT PLB (CT-group) performed between January 2017 and February 2020 were reviewed. The primary endpoint was the diagnostic success. Secondary endpoints were technical success, total procedure duration, number of CT acquisitions and the dose length product (DLP) during step ∆1 (from planning to initial needle placement), step ∆2 (progression to target), and the entire intervention (from planning to final control) and complications. Additional parameters were recorded, such as the lesion’s size and trajectory angles. Sixty patients were included in each group. The lesions median size and median values of the two trajectory angles were significantly lower (20 vs. 29.5 mm, p = 0.006) and higher in the NAV-group (15.5° and 10° vs. 6° and 1°; p < 0.01), respectively. Technical and diagnostic success rates were similar in both groups, respectively 95% and 93.3% in the NAV-group, and 93.3% and 91.6% in the CT-group. There was no significant difference in total procedure duration (p = 0.487) and total number of CT acquisitions (p = 0.066), but the DLP was significantly lower in the NAV-group (p < 0.01). There was no significant difference in complication rate. For PLB, CT-Navigation™ system is efficient and safe as compared to the conventional CT method.

In previous studies of cell-cell and cell-substratum adhesion, we have identified differences in the behaviour between human skin fibroblasts cultured from normal individuals and patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). In these studies, monolayer cultures were dissociated by trypsinization and no detectable difference was noted in the efficiency of cell dissociation between normal and DMD fibroblast cultures. However, a detailed study by Kent has suggested that Duchenne fibroblasts exhibit increased sensitivity to trypsin. We have re-investigated this finding using an assay that directly measures the number of cells remaining attached to a substratum following trypsinization. In a series of experiments using cultures derived from five normal and five DMD individuals, we can detect no significant difference in the trypsin-induced detachment rates between normal and DMD skin fibroblasts. This observation applies to both growth-phase and stationary-phase cell cultures. This inconsistency with previously reported data on the trypsin-sensitivity of DMD cells is considered in terms of the different assays used and the effects of trypsin on cell-cell and cell-substratum adhesion. The relationship between abnormalities in the behaviour of DMD cells and the localization and primary structure of the DMD gene product are also discussed.

The Coronavirus pandemic outbreak has changed numerous life activities. The education sector is one of many sectors that have been heavily impacted by the pandemic. Necessitating a transition to virtual distance learning challenged educators’ adaptation towards using online platforms for teaching and assessment. This study examines (1) teachers’ perception of their competencies and readiness to the online mode of learning in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), (2) teachers’ mental states during the Coronavirus pandemic, and (3) the relationship between teachers’ perception of competencies and their mental states. A Teachers’ Competency Measurement Scale (TCMS) was developed to achieve the purpose of this research study. Data was collected quantitatively from 232 teachers who have teaching obligations for grades K-12 in the UAE. The findings showed that most of the teachers in the UAE feel competent and ready for the transition to the online learning environment. The Correlation Coefficient analysis revealed that there is no relationship between teachers’ perception of competencies and their mental states. Furthermore, the Coronavirus affected teachers negatively.

BACKGROUND D2Refine provides a Web-based environment to create clinical research study data dictionaries and enables standardization and harmonization of its variable definitions with controlled terminology resources. OBJECTIVE To assess the usability of the functions D2Refine offers, a usability study was designed and executed. METHODS We employed the TURF (task, user, representation, and function) Usability Framework of electronic health record usability to design, configure, and execute the usability study and performed quantitative analyses. D2Refine was compared for its usability metrics against two other comparable solutions, OntoMaton and RightField, which have very similar functionalities for creating, managing, and standardizing data dictionaries. We first conducted the function analysis by conducting one-on-one interviews armed with questionnaires to catalog expected functionality. The enrolled participants carried out the steps for selected tasks to accomplish specific goals and their feedback was captured to conduct the task analysis. RESULTS We enrolled a group (n=27) of study developers, managers, and software professionals to execute steps of analysis as specified by the TURF framework. For the within-model domain function saturation, D2Refine had 96% saturation, which was 4 percentage points better than OntoMaton and 28 percentage points better than RightField. The manual examination and statistical analysis of the data were conducted for task analysis, and the results demonstrated a significant difference for favorability toward D2Refine (P<.001) with a 95% CI. Overall, 17 out of 27 (63%) participants indicated that D2Refine was their favorite of the three options. CONCLUSIONS D2Refine is a useful and promising platform that can help address the emerging needs related to clinical research study data dictionary standardization and harmonization.
