The article examines the process of formation of national languages of science in the history of European culture, starting from the XIV century. The conditions that contributed to this process are considered. First, an absolute prerequisite for the emergence of the language of science is the flourishing of national literature, both in poetry and in prose. A significant role is played by the development of the university education, where teaching philosophy (including the philosophy of nature), i.e. the ability to freely work with abstract concepts, was a prerequisite for the transition to specialization in theology, law, and medicine. Printing, in turn, not only dramatically increased the number of readers belonging to the middle class,but also contributed to the development of national languages. Finally, since the fourteenth century in Europe, literary societies have sprung up in the courts of lords with the aim of improving the native language. These societies are gradually supplemented by associations and academies whose members are interested in science and are not limited by the statutes of universities. The article considers the formation of the scientific language in Russia in the XVIII-XIX centuries. This is a process that took almost two centuries, starting from the philological studies of V. E. Adodurov, V. K. Trediakovsky and M. V. Lomonosov. The role of Russian poets and writers, who greatly enriched the vocabulary of the Russian language, have provided it with freedom and flexibility, the importance of such organizations as the Assembly of translators, the Free Russian Assembly, the Russian Academy, etc. and, of course, the work of hundreds of scientists is of inestimable importance.

The article examines the history of the formation of several languages of science – Ancient Greek, Sanskrit, Arabic and Latin - relating to the material of four languages and corresponding cultures. Several considerations are given in favor of the need to preserve the national languages of science. The stages of formation of languages of science in the system of culture are traced. There are two types of languages that are used by scientific communities: 1) languages that are rooted in the national culture and remain firmly linked with the natural language community; 2) languages that are reserved for performing a certain function, while in parallel, national languages are fully functioning in society. The first type includes the Greek and Arabic, the scientific languages of the second type are Sanskrit and Latin. The key role of the humanitarian, in particular poetic, philological and philosophical culture for the formation of the language of science is shown. Based on the material of the Ancient Greek language, the stages of its development over several centuries are traced, which resulted in such linguistic tools that allowed not only to use abstract conceptual concepts, but also to organize the vocabulary hierarchically, and this as a result allowed to form any needed generic chains. The importance of the appearance of impersonal texts that comes with collections of written documents alienated from a particular teacher is emphasized.

The aim of the paper is to show and describe the current situation in the Latvian scientific language based on a case study of the problem about the place of a national language and its existence in science in modern globalised time, when the dominance of English as the lingua franca of science grows. More specifically, the paper analyses the November 2019 conceptual plans of the Latvian Ministry of Education and Science about a new concept of doctoral study programmes that would lean towards using English as the doctoral dissertation language in hopes for scientific excellence, and the public reaction and opinion on this concept. The descriptive method is used within the paper, including the contemporary literature review focused on the language of science globally, issues of multilingualism and glocalization, and the problems caused by these issues. Via empirical discourse content analysis, the authors looked at various documents, including Latvian law that governs the rights and rules of the Latvian language use in various contexts. They examined a wide array of mainly online content and diverse online community discourse related to the question of what language should be used (Latvian or English) within the doctoral dissertation process. For a comparison of the situation, the paper also provides a brief insight into the regulation of the language used in the development of dissertations in Lithuania. During the study, 21 different sources, that is, articles posted on various Latvian news media sites and 304 online user comments, predominantly anonymous, under these articles relating to the issue of language choice in doctoral dissertations were analysed. All the mentioned sources, to a greater or lesser extent, discussed the issue of what place Latvian has as a language of science and whether English should be the dominant language in doctoral studies, what implications the choice and usage of a language could have, and what far-reaching impact this might have on science, education, and society. The material revealed a breadth of opinions, depending on what group a person is more likely to represent, ranging from the Ministry stance to organisations and the general public. Some had a very pro-English stance, and some showed significant concern for the Latvian language. The main trend in online community user opinions could be condensed as such: there is a variety of language choices for a doctoral dissertation – a dissertation written in Latvian; a dissertation written in English; or leaving the language choice up to the doctoral student. This would ensure that the language choice fits the doctoral students’ goals and field of research. Making English mandatory would not likely lead to guarantee scientific excellence as what matters is the research content itself, not the language used. The national language in science is a current and important issue in Latvia, as there is a need for state language use in a scientific register, and this usage should be developed further. The Ministry document discussed is still a draft report, and it is not yet known what final decisions on the PhD process and dissertation language will be taken by policymakers in the future. This paper shows that language choice and use in science is not just a matter for scholars and PhD candidates, but an issue that can and does gain interest from various groups of society and gets discussed online in multiple ways, allowing people to express their opinion on policy and societal issues. Latvian is a scientific language, and it has a place within the international scientific discourse, and it should not be made to step aside for the dominant lingua franca.

The article is dedicated to the centenary of Belarusian State University and the centenary of biological university education in Belarus. The history of the faculty of biology is described, a retrospective of the development of its units since 1921 is presented. The most significant personalities and events are highlighted. The inseparable connection between the life of the faculty and the university as a whole is demonstrated.

This paper charts the history and debates surrounding the introduction of academic, university-based training of nurses in South Africa. This was a process that was drawn out over five decades, beginning in the late 1930s. For nurses, university training was an important part of a process of professionalization; however, for other members of the medical community, nursing was seen as being linked to women's service work. Using the case-study of the University of the Witwatersrand, one of South Africa's premier universities and the place in the country to offer a university-based nursing program, we argue that an historical understanding of the ways in which nursing education was integrated into the university system tells us a great deal about the professionalization of nursing. This paper also recognises, for the first time, the pioneers of this important process.

Emil Baleczky (his pseudonyms: E. Latorchanin, O. Vyshchak, and his cryptonym: E. A.) is one of the most prominent personalities in the history of Ukrainian studies in Hungary in the twentieth century. His main scientific interests include Transcarpathian dialectology and historical lexicology of the Ukrainian language. The second stage of the scientist's professional carrier is connected with the University of Budapest, where in 1951, Emil Baleczky was appointed head of the Department of the Russian Language at the Institute of Foreign Languages, and at the same time assistant professor of the Russian Institute at the University. Among the scientific interests of Emil Baleczky was the investigation of lexical units commonly used in Transcarpathia, first of all, in terms of their etymology. Among the achievements of the researcher, special attention must be paid to Emil Baleczky's attempt to determine the origin of some borrowed words, including those originally Slavic, which are common in the Carpathian Ukrainian dialects. Emil Baleczky performed a deep etymological and lingual-geographical analysis of the word урик, урюк, орек in the Ukrainian language, that of the word дюг widespread in Precarpathian Ukrainian, Polish, and Slovakian dialects, and also that of the noun kert in Transcarpathian Ukrainian dialects. The author devoted a separate paper to the study of the origin of dialecticisms like фотляк, csulka ~ csurka, бôшн’ак, булґар’, валах, ґириґ, тôўт, and циганин, investigated the etymology of the terms of national dishes widespread in Carpathian Ukrainian dialects, in particular of the token бáник. He considered the role of the Old Church Slavonic language in the history of the Carpathian Ukrainian dialects. According to his contemporaries, it is known that Emil Baleczky did not maintain official connections with the Soviet Transcarpathians but was surprisingly well-informed about the scientific processes in his native land. He analyzed the works contained in the two editions of the Dialectological Collection of Uzhgorod State University. In addition to examining the issues raised, Baleczky complemented, specified, and sometimes criticized the achievements of his colleagues, which indicates his deep knowledge of Transcarpathian Ukrainian dialectology. Thus, we can state that Emil Baleczky's works testify the high professionalism of the author, his profound knowledge in the field of synchronic and diachronic dialectology. The love of Transcarpathian dialects inspired the researcher to study them thoroughly as well as to present the research results to the general public of Slavists. The main area of Emil Baleczky's scientific interest until the end of his life was Ukrainian linguistics, particularly Transcarpathian Ukrainian dialectology. The aim of this paper is to present the Emil Baleczky's achievements in the field of Transcarpathian Ukrainian dialectology, focusing on the period from 1957 to 1979.

The article addresses the problem of the interaction of political, media and everyday discourse. The object of the research is words and expressions from a politician’s idiolect that become precedential phenomena of the Russian language and facts of the Russian culture. These are peculiar language labels, aphorisms, which are associated in the consciousness of society with the name of a certain political person. The “Explanatory Dictionary of Russian Everyday Speech”, by virtue of its specificity, allows not only fixing such words, but also to note (in special areas of the dictionary) the stylistic, pragmatic features of a particular lexeme, and also briefly describe the history of their use in Russian. As a rule, such words are borrowed from distant, stylistically alien for public speech spheres of communication, such as everyday discourse or social and professional jargons. These language units, replicating through the media, are involved in common usage, which can lead to their rooting in the national language, the loss of slang or colloquial status, and other changes. The use of such words to make speech more expressive usually implies deviations from the standard language norm, as well as communicative norms of institutional communication. The article provides the analysis of speech manner of Soviet and modern politicians (N. Khruschev, B. Yeltsyn, V. Putin and others), mostly on the basis of the entries from The “Explanatory Dictionary of Russian Everyday Speech”

Статья посвящена 35-летию подписания договора между Леонским и Воронежским государственным университетами. В ней содержатся краткий экскурс в историю подписания договора и современное состояние международного академического сотрудничества двух университетов в области преподавания русского языка. Дается обзор материалов, использовавшихся преподавателями ВГУ при обучении испанских студентов РКИ, а также краткое описание организации учебного процесса по русскому языку в Леонском университете. Особое внимание уделяется описанию апробации в Леонском университете интерактивного учебника для испаноговорящих «Ruso Comunicativo», созданного коллективом Института международного образования ВГУ. The article is dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the signing of the Agreement between Leon University and Voronezh State University. It contains a brief excursion into the history of the signing of the Agreement and the current state of international academic cooperation between the two universities in the field of teaching the Russian language. An overview of the materials used by VSU teachers in teaching Spanish students Russian as a foreign language is given, as well as a brief description of the organization of the educational process in the Russian language at the University of León. Particular attention is paid to the story about the testing at the University of León of the interactive textbook for Spanish-speaking students «Ruso Comunicativo», created by the team of the Institute of International Education of Voronezh State University.

The article describes the period from the end of the nineteenth century to the 1950's. It presents the achievements of the pioneers of Polish landscape architecture, associated with various aspects of the design, planning and protection of the landscape, in addition to professional education. In the majority of European countries, the development of landscape architecture as a separate profession is dated to the interbellum period. In Poland there is currently no doubt as to the fact that landscape architecture is an independent professional discipline. However, several decades ago this topic was the subject of spirited discussion among Polish specialists, which took place on the pages of specialist periodicals. The discussions that took place at the time between outstanding garden planners, practitioners, scientists, didactic and popularizes who came from various different fields concerned the profession and the preparation of specialists, in addition to the name itself. One of the pioneers – Zygmunt Hellwig, wrote: "I believe that the shaping of the landscape is an art and science that is currently completely independent, one that has grown equally well from the foundations of horticulture, architecture and a number of similar disciplines, one that can absolutely no longer fit within the framework of the professional preparation and qualifications of an architect-builder."(1935). The landscape architecture profession developed very dynamically. Significant projects, now considered icons, were being developed, e.g. Żelazowa Wola, a monument park dedicated to Chopin or Skaryszewski Park in Warsaw. At horticultural fairs one of the more important sections was garden planning, where individual cities prided themselves in their achievements in the design of public parks. University education started to be provided in this speciality. Franciszek Krzywda-Polkowski, who had obtained an education in architecture, was the first to introduce landscape architecture to a university curriculum and organised and supervised the Landscape Architecture and Park Science Division at the University of Life Sciences starting from 1928. He also taught at the Warsaw University of Technology. His diploma candidates, Alina Scholtz and Gerard Ciołek, made significant contributions to the development of landscape architecture in Poland. A. Scholtz, an outstanding designer, became one of the founding members of the International Federation of Landscape Architecture (IFLA) in 1948. G. Ciołek was the creator of the Polish school of the revalorisation of historical garden layouts. His comprehensive scientific works on the history of garden design had a pioneering character. He is the author of the fundamental work Ogrody polskie (1954).

Alexey Bogolyubov and Ivan Slavin are the two prominent figures in the cultural and public life of the Russian Empire’s Saratov Province. The former was a well-known painter, philanthropist, and Maecenas. In 1885, Alexey Bogolyubov initiated the foundation of the Saratov Museum of Fine Arts (the first public fine arts museum in Russia) and the creation of the famous Saratov drawing school, the cradle of many Russian painters, which was opened after Bogolyubov’s death in 1897. The latter – Ivan Slavin was an eminent public figure in Saratov, the author of the memoirs about the development of his native city in the pre-revolutionary period. In his book, Slavin described the events in which he himself was directly involved as a member of the city government. The Saratov Region State Archives has preserved the documents attesting to the long-lasting friendly relationship between A.P. Bogolyubov and I.Ya. Slavin. The materials elaborate on the roles of the two personalities in the history of the Volga city, which, before World War I, was considered to be the “capital of the Volga Region”. The article tries to analyze how and on what basis did the two characters draw closer. The difference in age was not an obstacle and did not interfere with their business and friendly relationship. Alexey Bogolyubov spent most of his life abroad. Ivan Slavin, out of his convictions, never left his homeland. They were united by the Russian language, pan-European culture, their dedicated service to Russia, understanding of their duty to contemporaries and descendants. “The Sons of the Fatherland” – this noble definition can fully characterize both figures.

Chapter 7 connects the book to work on the subsequent history of Cambridge, including that on the development of the University. It considers the extent to which trends identified in the Hundred Rolls continued into the fourteenth century. Cambridge adjusted to the decline in its agricultural trade after the Black Death by developing its service sector, linked to university education. The role of family dynasties remained significant, but the period was characterised by the growth of three key institutions – the borough corporation, the guilds, and the colleges. College property holdings increased, driven by increasing student numbers, and the colleges gradually obtained rights to the meadows adjoining the river to the west of the town. The foundation of King’s College transformed the street plan in the west of Cambridge, obliterating many ancient streets and buildings, but providing new economic opportunities to supply the academic community.
