The subject of the article is an attempt to reconstruct the picture of war contained in the seventeenth century textbook for teaching Polish as a foreign language Viertzig Dialogi by Nicolaus Volckmar. The author presented two different ways of talking about war — from the point of view of its participant soldier and from the point of view of its observer a civilian. For this purpose, he used a standard vocabulary, which allowed him to talk about war subjects names of war participants, types of weapons and personal equipment of the soldier, names of military operations, military facilities and places of fight. Regardless of the method of building the narrative, the war in N. Volckmar’s dialogues is perceived as a direct threat to its participants — the recruited soldiers, and as a source of disasters for the civilian population.

That preciosity is only a relative term will be readily endorsed by anyone who has studied the critical literature devoted to Jean Giraudoux. Some critics hurl the word as a reproach and condemnation, while others give themselves pains to plead or explain Giraudoux's case. Each, as well as the author himself, feels certain that preciosity is the word which will label and pigeon-hole him exactly; but alas, each proceeds to suggest a different nuance until the subject becomes quite confusing. The word preciosity itself suffers as many interpretations as classicism or romanticism, so a precise definition is out of the question. Originally associated with the seventeenth century arbiters of taste in language and etiquette, the term has since broadened its scope considerably. Literary historians have found it a convenient label for subtlety and refinement wherever these qualities may appear. Hence they do not mean an isolated phenomenon, but a fundamental characteristic of some minds, adapting and transforming itself according to time and place. Words such as gongorism, euphuism, concettism, conceptualism, or marivaudage are mutations or varieties of preciosity. According to popular usage, however, précieux means only précieux ridicule, synonymous with artificial or affected. In analyzing the preciosity of Jean Giraudoux from our own point of view, we shall find occasion to examine a great variety of critical opinions.

AbstractThis article purports to reflect on theatricality and metatheatre from the point of view of the reading reception of the dramatic text. Theoretical-methodological postulates about metatheatre and its relationship with the subject of Theatrum Mundi are reviewed in the context of the ‘horizon of expectations’ of seventeenth-century Spanish theater. A number of methodological guidelines are proposed for the analysis of reception, considering the effects that metatheatre may have had on these corpora, which at the present time can positively contribute to catch the attention of the receiver/viewer.Recibido: 31 de octubre de 2018Aceptado: 10 de enero de 2019

The article presents the most important aspects of the geographic dimension of criminology. Referring the considerations to areas such as sociology or, in general, knowledge about society, the subject matter was formulated in an interdisciplinary way, indicating its complexity and, at the same time, importance from the point of view of social sciences. In this work, space is seen in many perspectives - as a factor that has both a direct and indirect impact on the distribution of crime. Human activity in a given area and the possibility of spatial development of the area in terms of the tasks it is to fulfill are also important. The article is a theoretical analysis in which the analysis of Polish and foreign-language literature was used, as well as a descriptive historical method. There were also comparative analyzes in legal terms. The applied methodology contributed to the implementation of in-depth inferences, the results of which are the conclusions and research postulates presented at the end of the work. The article is dedicated primarily to people who have an impact on architectural changes in the area of towns and villages. The issues presented make a reference to the still valid problem of crime prevention. Spatial prevention should not only account for the so far unused opportunities that lie open to civil society, but also be a real change in the approach to construction. The process of space revitalization will be effective only through meta-analyzes consisting in the first place in recognizing, identifying existing or potential threats, and then implementing, in the course of social consultations, well-thought-out solutions that fit into a given space architecturally. These actions will require changes in the approach to the current protection against undesirable behaviors, focusing not on reducing the effects of adverse effects, but leaning towards criminal and architectural prevention. For this purpose, new legal solutions adequate to the existing national conditions will also be necessary.

The article deals with the problem of raising the linguistic competence of civil servants, such as judges of all levels and jurisdictions. Language planning as a part of the state language policy is the subject to change in both the corpus and status, that leads to new challenges to reforming the judiciary in Ukraine. The role of the linguistic competence of judges, acting on behalf of the State of Ukraine, who should do it as correctly as possible, not only from the point of view of jurisprudence, but also in view of the perfection of linguistic means (which generally contributes to enhancing the authority of the court and its credibility), has not been yet an object of a certain scientific investigation.                               This determines the relevance of the proposed research. The purpose of the article is to find out the peculiarities of the formation of the judge linguistic competence, in particular the factors influencing its level, ways of its improvement and specifics of further evaluation. The updated language legislation stipulates that the future judge, as a public official, should have a good command of the state language, which must be confirmed by the appropriate state certificate issued by the National State Language Standards Commission. At the same time, the legal norm is to formalize court decisions in accordance with the standards of the state language, which have changed since the new version of the Spelling of the Ukrainian language came into force. The article provides the analysis of the specific cases of updated norms of modern Ukrainian literary language and the practice of their use in the work of judges, including the use of capital letters in the titles of the highest state positions and Internet terms, the variability of excellent endings of oikonyms, writing complex words with a foreign language prefix and more. Preparing for obtaining the certificate of the international standard on the level of command of the state language by representatives of the judiciary of Ukraine, outlining ways, forms and methods of its organization are perspective issues for further research.

There are certain details connected with the craft of the armourer, or rather with his productions, which hitherto have not received the attention which they undoubtedly deserve; for they bear very definitely on the whole subject of military equipment and as such require careful consideration if we are to use sculptured or pictorial contemporary records as illustrations of military operations. Writers on arms and armour have, with few if any exceptions, dealt solely with design and form, and have seldom noticed the reasons why certain types of equipment were introduced; nor have they drawn attention to the many obvious drawbacks or advantages of constructional details which force themselves upon one's notice if the subject is studied from the point of view of the man who wore the armour and had to fight in it.

Moving from the complementary relationship between International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law, this article analyses the issue of private property in occupied territory from the civilians perspective. In the attempt to verify if contemporaneous practice has modified customary international law obligations of Occupying Powers, the Author highlights the complex and heterogeneous evolution of the protection of the right to private property. On the one hand, practice confirms the strengthening of its safeguard by the extensive interpretation of the absolute prohibition on confiscation, forbidding an occupying power to take "permanent" measures of dispossession and de facto transfer of title. The same result is achieved by the enlargement of the material scope of application of the crime of pillage, and by the narrow interpretation of the derogation clause of the "absolute necessity of military operations", contained in the rule prohibiting the destruction of private property. Moreover, practice's development proves the existence of a privileged class of assets (such as foodstuffs, houses, or medical supplies), whose essential nature to the well-being of the civilian population makes them object of a stronger guarantee. On the other hand, recent trends show a weakening in the protection of the right to private property, above all within the context of prolonged occupation as well as trans- formative one. The occupant's widest powers of requisition of private property in these particular cases interfere in a deeper manner with the enjoyment of the right in hand, partly justified by the more and more flexible interpretation given to the general conservationist principle of military occupation law. Actually, this weakening is only apparent. From a broader point of view, the less protection of the right to private property is counterbalanced by the use of the proportionality test, to assess if occupying power action respects the other human rights of the civilian population.

SummaryIn the Marinelli chair, a geometry widely used in whole body counting, the lower part of the leg is seen quite inefficiently by the detector. The present paper describes an attempt to modify the standard chair geometry to minimise this limitation. The subject sits crossed-legged in the “Buddha Posture” in the standard chair. Studies with humanoid phantoms and a volunteer sitting in the Buddha posture show that this modification brings marked improvement over the Marinelli chair both from the point of view of sensitivity and uniformity of spatial response.
