It remains unclear how lack of management succession planning relates to the collapse of 87% of the Tanzanian family-owned manufacturing businesses (FOMBs) after the first generation.  Also, the question of whether a firm’s background variables, namely; executive’s education level, business age, and business size, moderate the relationship between management succession planning and the survival of FOMBs remains unanswered. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between succession planning and the survival of FOMBs, moderated by the firm’s background variables through the lens of resource-based theory as well as agency theory. A sample of 339 executives was randomly drawn from the FOMBs in Dar es Salaam city where the collapse of FOMBs after the first generation was revealed to be significant and surveyed using a structured questionnaire. Multiple linear regression was used as a quantitative data analysis technique with the support of SPSS as an analytical tool. Results revealed that management succession variables, namely; training the successor, successor involvement in business management and successor factors-work fit had a positive and significant relationship with the survival of FOMBs. However, the internal recruitment of the successor had an insignificant relationship with the survival of FOMBs. Therefore, management succession planning sustains the leadership pipeline and survival of the FOMBs through the involvement of the successor in business management, sufficiently training the successor, and handing over power to the successor whose competency and factors fit with the relevant work. The study contributes to an understanding of management succession planning variables and how they relate to the survival of family-owned manufacturing businesses. The study also provides a new conceptual framework on transgenerational management succession planning in the FOMBs.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine why companies are placing increasing importance on implementing occupational health and safety (OHS) practices, and to analyse their reasons for adopting these practices. Specifically, it is asked whether OHS practices are introduced as a result of coercive pressures. The different ways companies respond to these pressures is also explored. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative data analysis technique was used to analyse the relationship between the reasons for implementing OHS in a sample of 3,005 Spanish firms, using the responses to a survey from the Institute for the Prevention of Risk at Work. Findings The results revealed three different groups of companies in terms of their reasons for implementing OHS practices; it was also found that employer involvement in OHS is higher when the main reason for implementing OHS practices is a real concern to improve working conditions, not simply coercive pressures. Practical implications The results of the study demonstrate the importance of moving from reactive to proactive management. Practitioners should consider employees’ health and safety not only in terms of an institutional pressure, but as a part of their social responsibility and integral to their business practice. Public administration should work to reward positive behaviours and not only punish noncompliance. Originality/value This paper contributes to a better understanding of the reasons to implement OHS in an early stage of institutionalisation of these practices, providing an empirical analysis of the reasons behind employer involvement. This paper is highly relevant for researchers, governments and practitioners.

The data analysis technique used is the Moderate Regression Analysis (MRA) with the help of IBM SPSS Statistics 21 program. The results showed that socialization and training had a significant positive effect on the implementation of SAK ETAP. Environmental uncertainty strengthens the relationship of socialization and training to the implementation of SAK ETAP. Educational background, business size, and understanding of technology have no effect on the implementation of SAK ETAP. Environmental uncertainty cannot moderate the relationship of educational background and implementation of SAK ETAP. Purpose Assessing the antecedents of innovation implementation holds importance for companies, as previous studies have shown that without proper implementation the innovation is doomed to fail. Over the past few years, research on innovation implementation is growing. However, the evidence on the antecedents of innovation implementation is inconsistent. The purpose of the study is to conduct a review of the literature using meta-analysis to summarize the divergent views present in the literature. Design/methodology/approach A meta-analysis technique is adopted for reviewing the literature. The literature search was conducted with selected keywords in different databases and top journals from the ABDC list (A* and A). Findings The results of the meta-analysis that summarize evidence from 42 papers, 100 effect sizes and 32,223 organizations show the significance and homogeneous/heterogeneous opinions of the past studies. Results reveal the homogeneity in antecedents such as transformational leadership, business collaboration, employee competency, leader competency, absorptive capacity and business size and heterogeneity in the antecedents such as communication, customer collaboration, internal entrainment, external entrainment, implementation climate and strategic resources. Research limitations/implications The results imply that managers attempting to implement innovation in the organizations need to first focus on homogenous antecedents followed by heterogeneous antecedents for successful implementation. Originality/value This study advocates research on innovation implementation. It tests the significance, nature of the relationship and summarizes the divergent views on antecedents of innovation implementation in an organization. The results of this study can also be used in the theoretical advancement of management innovation literature.
