Physiological status of chrysanthemum cuttings during rooting process highly influences plant growth and flower production. Amongst other aspects, rooting capacity of the cuttings is the most important. Rooting capacity is influenced by environmental conditions such as growing medium and nutrition. The study was aimed to analyze the effects of different types of media, fertilizer concentration, and frequency of fertilizer application on the rooting capacity of chrysanthemum cuttings. The experiment was conducted at the Segunung Experimental Station of the Indonesian Ornamental Crops Research Institute from February to May 2005. The treatments consisted of four different rooting media, i.e. carbonized rice husk, coco peat, perlite, and mixture of perlite and vermiculite (1:1 v/v); two concentrations of NPK (25:7:7) fertilizers, i.e. 1.75 and 2.5 g 1-l; and four frequencies of fertilizer application, i.e. every 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, and 4 days. The experiment was designed in a completely randomized block with four replications. Parameters observed were rooting capacity and cutting performances such as cutting height, cutting diameter, number of leaves, number of visible roots, and root length at 16 days after planting. The results showed that chrysanthemum cuttings rooted in carbonized rice husk had better performance than those rooted in coco peat, vermiculite, and mixture of perlite + vermiculite. Higher concentration of fertilizer solution up to 2.5 g l-1 also gave significant effect on the root formation and further root growth of cuttings. However, the rooting capacity of cuttings was not affected by the frequency of fertilizer application. This study implied that carbonized rice husk growing medium supplemented with NPK (2.5 g l-l) every 4 days during rooting period is the choice for traditional chrysanthemum growers to increase the perform-ance and quality of the cut flowers.

Amaranthus cruentus L. is a leafy vegetable that is cultivated mainly for its leaves and grains. Due to high demand for this crop in Nigeria, the need to boost its productivity becomes necessary. Field and laboratory studies were conducted during in two successive cropping seasons at the experimental farm and laboratory unit of the Department of Crop Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Benin City. Three cutting heights C1: (10 cm), C2: (15 cm), C3: (20 cm) and a control C0: (no cutting) and four rates of fertilizer application F0: (Control), F1: (10 t ha-1 poultry manure), F2: (150 kg ha-1 NPK15:15:15) and F3 (75 t ha-1 NPK 15:15:15 + 5 t ha-1 poultry manure) constituted the treatments. The treatments were in three replicate laid out in a (4 × 4) factorial arrangement in a randomized complete block design. Data collected were plant height (cm), leaf area (cm2), stem diameter (cm) and number of branches. Fresh and dry herbage yield were taken at harvest. Growth, yield, and quality of Amarathus cruentus were significantly influenced by cutting heights and fertilizer application. In both years, number of branches (3.50 and 6.01) were lowest at C0 compared with other treatments. Herbage fresh and dry yield (49.10 t ha-1 and 18.20 t ha-1) were highest at C3 and was consistent in both years. Similarly, the concentration of K, Ca, and Mg in plant tissue and the uptake of nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and Na) increase at C3 compared with other treatments. F3 significantly (p<0.05) produced highest dry herbage yield (13.08 t ha-1and 25.15 t ha-1) in both years. Crude protein, fibre and fat content of   the shoots were highest at cutting height of C3 and at F3 fertilizer rate. Therefore, for good yield and better quality of Amaranthus cruentus L, a combination of (75 t ha-1 NPK 15:15:15 + 5 t ha-1 poultry manure) at cutting height of C3: (20 cm above soil level) is recommended for Amaranthus cruentus L production in the study area.

The use of ferns as orchid growing media feel expensive, so it is necessary to find an alternative media as a media surrogate fern that has been used. This study aimed to explore alternative growing media and fertilizer is good for growth and development of dendrobium orchids. Selection of a good planting medium and the proper use of fertilizers can be expected to support healthy plant growth and quality of orchids. experiments were conducted at Greenhouse Faculty of Agriculture Lampung University. The experiment was conducted using a randomized design perfectly with the treatment group factorial (6x2). The first factor is the type of growing medium consists of wood charcoal (M1), fern (M2), husk + sawdust (M3), acacia bark (M4), cocochip (M5) and coconut bark (M6). The second factor is the type of foliar fertilizer consists of Gandasil (P1) and Hyponex (P2). Data were analyzed by analysis of variance followed by HSD test at 5% level. The results showed that the use of media orchids ferns produce good vegetative growth, no different to use of planting medium charcoal, charcoal husk + sawdust, bark and bark acacia tree coconut, but it is different than the use of cocochip shown in variable plant height, number of leaves , leaf length and leaf width. While fertilizers orchid leaves that produce good growth is fertilizer of Gandasil

Cyclamen species (swinebread spp.) are perennial herbaceous plants which belong to the Primulaceae family, widely used as medicinal or ornamental plants. Currently, gibberellic acid (GA3), an environmentally friendly bioregulator is widely used to enhance the productivity and phenotypic characteristics of multiple ornamental crops. A dual experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of gibberellic acid (50, 100 or 150 mg/L), on germination earliness of seeds, along with growth and ornamental quality of selected Cyclamen species. Additionally, a greenhouse experiment with long and short sunlight photoperiod was conducted to evaluate its importance in the development of Cyclamen plants. Our results indicated that under short sunlight exposure, seeds germinated earlier than those kept in long sunlight photoperiod. Plants treated with foliar applications of GA3 exhibited higher plant height, leaf area, number of leaves, root length and tuber development. Significant differences were found in germination percentage (GP), mean germination time (MGT) and seedling vigor index (SVI), within different GA3 supplementation and greenhouse sunlight intensity (short and long days). In conclusion, our study suggests that seedling vigor and ornamental quality can be increased by GA3 application, an economic strategy for enhancing germination and growth of selected Cyclamen species.

Orchids are of importance primarily for their horticultural appeal and accounts for 8% of the world floricultural trade. Scorpion orchid (Arachnis maingayi Hook) is highly prized for its beautiful long lasting flowers, but it is under-exploited in many countries including Nigeria. There is the need to determine the best type of cutting and growing medium protocols for commercial production of this species. Seven homogenous growing media (sawdust, topsoil, charcoal, coconut husk, wood shavings, maize cobs and rice husk) and two types of cutting (apical and non-apical) were compared in a factorial experiment laid out in Completely Randomized Design with six replications at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria between 2010 and 2012. Data collected on plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, shoot dry weight, days to spiking, length and number of spike, size and number of florets were subjected to analysis of variance and Tukey’s HSD at p ≤ 0.05 to separate treatment means. Apical cuttings were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) superior to non-apical cuttings in terms of all parameters assessed except floret diameter which was statistically similar. For growing medium, dry matter accumulation and spike yield were in the order of charcoal > rice husk > maize cob > topsoil > wood shavings > coconut husk. Apical cuttings planted in charcoal or rice husk gave the best results relative to other media. Thus, apical cutting is the best propagating technique and charcoal or rice husk is the best growing medium for scorpion orchid cultivation.

<em>Seedling is an important process in preparing cocoa plant material. The growing medium must have sufficient nutrition and physical properties to enable cocoa seeds to grow well. Arbuscular mycorrhizae fungi (AMF) and biological charcoal (biochar) added into growing media were expected to increase the growth of cocoa seeds. The study aimed to determine the effect of AMF and biological charcoal on the growth of cocoa seeds. The randomized complete block design (RBD) in factorial 2 factors with three replications was used in this study. The first factor was AMF application consisted of two levels, namely: M0 = without AMF and M1 = application of 10 g/seedling AMF (100 spores/seedling). The second factor was the biochar application consisted of 5 factors namely: B0 = no biochar, B1 = 2% rice husk biochar, B2 = 4% rice husk biochar, B3 = 2% albizia wood biochar, and B4 = 4% albizia wood biochar. The variables observed were the height of seedling, number of leaves and stem diameter at 3, 4, 5 and 6 month after planting (MAP), leaf chlorophyll content, weight of dry cocoa seedling, and nutrient content in seedling media. The result showed that the application of AMF significantly affected the height of seedling at 3, 4, 5 and 6 MAP. While the application of biochar significantly affected the height and number of leaves of cacao seedlings.</em>

This study was aimed at assessing the response of cherry tomato to planting mediacomposition and SP-36 fertilizer rates. A factorial completely randomized design with two factorswas used. The first factor was planting media compositions, namely 100% soil, soil + rice huskcharcoal (1:1), soil + manure (1:1), rice husk charcoal + manure (1:1) and soil + rice huskcharcoal + manure (1:1:1). The second factor was SP-36 fertilizer rates, namely no fertilizer (0%R); 155.5 kg/ha (50% R); 311 kg/ha (100% R) and 466.5 kg/ha (150% R). The recommended rate(R) was 311 kg/ha. Results showed that cherry tomato plants grown in planting medium of soil +manure significantly had higher plant height, number of leaves, number of fruits and total solublesolid content than plants grown in the other planting media. Administration of SP-36 fertilizer indifferent rates was not found to significantly affect the growth, production and fruit quality ofcherry tomatoes. Cherry tomato grown in planting medium of soil + rice husk charcoal + manureand fertilized with recommended rate of SP-36 fertilizer (100% R) produced the highestfruit/plant weight and saleable fruit weight.Keywords: cherry tomato, total soluble solid, saleable fruit, rice husk charcoal, manure

Dendrobium orchid cv. Singapore White is cultivated commercially for cut flower purpose. The performance of this orchid in response to the different nutrient concentrations was evaluated under the agro-climatic conditions of Kodagu during 2017-2020. Twelve nutrient doses were applied as foliar sprays at weekly intervals to study their effect on vegetative growth, flower production and quality parameters of the cut flowers. Plant height, number of leaves plant-1, leaf area, number of pseudobulbs plant-1, number of spikes plant-1 year-1, number of flowers spike-1 and spike length varied significantly with the nutrient doses. Foliar spray of 30:20:20 NPK 0.1% at weekly intervals recorded the maximum plant height of 53.21cm, number of spikes plant-1year-1 (10.01) with spike length of 44.43 cm and 16.20 flower spike-1.

<p><em><span class="fontstyle0">Research on the effects of growing medium mixtures of strawberry’s</span><span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><span class="fontstyle2">(</span><span class="fontstyle3">Fragaria vesca</span><span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><span class="fontstyle2">L</span><span class="fontstyle3">.</span><span class="fontstyle2">)</span><span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><span class="fontstyle3">growth as ornamental plants in vertical garden was implemented from April to July 2016 in anexperimental field in Salaran Getasan Village. The purpose of this study were to 1) investigate the effects of different organic medium mixtures containing soil and rice husk, cocopeat, on compost banana </span><span class="fontstyle0">stem on strawberry’s growth and 2) determine the best mixture for strawberry’s vertical system. </span><span class="fontstyle3">The study was conducted using a randomized block design (RBD) with 10 treatments and four replications. The treatments included different compositions of soil and each material with a mixture ratio of 1: 1, 1: 2 and 2: 1. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and DMRT at 5% of error level as well as correlation test. Mixing organic medium as rice husk, cocopeat and compost banana stem with soil provided a significant influence on the number of leaves, number of Mixing organic medium as rice husk, cocopeat and compost banana stem with soil provided a </span><span class="fontstyle0">significant influence on the number of leaves, number of shoot and shoot’s dry weight. The best growing medium mixture for strawberry’s growth was soil and rice husk with a ratio 2:1. </span></em></p><p> </p>
