The equilibrium geometries, harmonic vibrational frenquencies, and the dissociation energies of the OCH+-Rg (Rg = He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe) complexes were calculated at the DFT, MP2, MP4, CCSD, and CCSD(T) levels of theory. In the lighter OCH+-Rg (Rg = He, Ne, Ar) rare gas complexes, the DFT and MP4 methods tend to produce longer Rg-H+ distance than the CCSD(T) level value, and the CCSD-calculated Rg-H+ bond lengths are slightly shorter. DFT method is not reliable to study weak interaction in the OCH+-He and OCH+-Ne complexes. A qualitative result can be obtained for OCH+-Ar complex by using the DFT method; however, a higher-level method using a larger basis set is required for the quantitative predictions. For heavier atom (Kr, Xe)-containing complexes, only the CCSD method predicted longer Rg-H+ distance than that obtained at the CCSD(T) level. The DFT method can be applied to obtain the semiquantitative results. The relativistic effects are expected to have minor effect on the geometrical parameters, the H+-C stretching mode, and the dissociation energy. However, the dissociation energies are sensitive to the quality of the basis set. The nature of interaction between the OCH+ ion and Rg atoms was also analyzed in terms of the interaction energy components.

ABSTRACTQuantum dot structures containing 2 and 7 layers of small coherent InAs clusters embedded into a Si single crystal matrix were grown by MBE. The structure of these clusters was investigated by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The crystallographic quality of the structure severely depends on the substrate temperature, growth sequence, and the geometrical parameters of the sample. The investigation demonstrates that Si can incorporate a limited volume of InAs in a form of small coherent clusters about 3 nm in diameter. If the deposited InAs layer exceeds a critical thickness, large dislocated InAs precipitates are formed during Si overgrowth accumulating the excess of InAs.

Continuous improvement of field sprayer design aimed at performance increase by increasing the working width, requires a special approach to ensure reliability of the supporting rod structure and quality of technological process. The question of rod vibrations, which arise when the driving systems copy field rough surface and abrupt changes in speed of the unit, remains topical. At the design stage of supporting structures of the rods, special attention is paid to the substantiation of its geometrical parameters in the longitudinal and transverse sections; studies of changes in the characteristics of vertical and horizontal vibrations, taking into account the method of the rod hanging and the system used for its stabilization. This allows to ensure the reliability of the rod design and the required quality of the technological process. The article proposes construction of the rod independent pendulum suspension on the sprayer frame and its stabilization system based on the use of damping elements. The analytical studies sequence system was developed for rod vibrations analysis, depending on initial conditions, parameters and characteristics of the used damping elements, under which they are effectively damped. It is shown that at certain numerical values of the geometrical parameters of the rod, the suspension and vibrations damping methods, not only the numerical values of the functions are changed, but also the functions themselves that describe the process of the rod's vertical movement, including cases of resonance. The obtained theoretical results can be used for design and testing of machines with rod working units and allow, at design stages, to simulate the process of movement of various rod structures from external excitatory forces, and to determine patterns of changes in the characteristics of damped vibrations using different damping elements and their installation parameters.

Abstract A new measure for evaluating fit quality of mating parts via Fit Capability Indices (FCIs) is introduced as an interface between fit quality and process control of the mating parts. Fit Capability Analysis method is discussed based on the relationship between FCIs and Process Capability Indices (PCIs). A new statistical tolerancing approach for assuring predetermined fit quality is developed on the basis of fit quality evaluation measures and fit capability analysis, which can be used as a guideline to process design and process monitoring of the mating parts.

The use of numerical modeling for atmospheric research is complicated by the problem of verification by a limited set of measurement data. Comparison with radar measurements is widely used for assessing the quality of the simulation. The probabilistic nature of the development of convective phenomena determines the complexity of the verification process: the reproduction of the pattern of the convective event is prior to the quantitative agreement of the values at a particular point at a particular moment.

We propose a method for verifying the simulation results based on comparing areas with the same reflectivity. The method is applied for verification of WRF-modeling of convective events in the Aragats highland massif in Armenia. It is shown that numerical simulation demonstrates approximately the same form of distribution of areas of equal reflectivity as for radar-measured reflectivity. In this case, the model tends to overestimate on average reflectivity, while enabling us to obtain the qualitatively correct description of the convective phenomenon.

The proposed technique can be used to verify the simulation results using data on reflectivity obtained by a satellite or a meteoradar. The technique allows one to avoid subjectivity in the interpretation of simulation results and estimate the quality of reproducing the “general pattern” of the convective event.

Abstract In multistage manufacturing systems, quality of final products is strongly affected not only by product design characteristics but also by key process design characteristics. However, historically, tolerance research has primarily focused on allocating tolerances based on product design characteristics for each component. Currently, there is no analytical approach for multistage manufacturing processes to optimally allocate tolerances to integrate product and process characteristics at minimum cost. One of the major obstacles is that the relationship between tolerances of process and product characteristics is not well understood and modeled. Under this motivation, this paper aims at presenting a framework addressing the process-oriented (rather than product-oriented) tolerancing technique for multistage manufacturing processes. Based on a developed state space model, tolerances of process design characteristics at each fabrication stage are related to the quality of final product. All key elements in the framework are described and then derived for a multistage assembly process. An industrial case study is used to illustrate the proposed approach.

In recent years, the Italian national institute of statistics (Istat), together with most National Statistical Institutes, is progressively moving from traditional production models based on the use of primary source of information - represented by direct surveys - to new production strategies based on the combined use of different primary and secondary sources of information. As result, new multisource statistical processes have been built, that guarantee a major improvement of both amount and quality of information about several phenomena of public interest. In this context, the Total Process Error (TPE) framework has been recently proposed in literature for assessing the quality of multisource processes. The TPE framework represents an evolution of the Zhang’s two-phase life-cycle approach and it additionally includes an operational tool to connect the steps of the multisource production process to the phases of the quality evaluation framework. TPE framework can be used both to support a multisource process design and to monitor an entire production process, in order to provide key elements to assess the quality of both the processes and their statistical outputs. In the present work, we describe as a case study in the new context of Istat production of official statistics the use of the TPE framework to support the process design of the Register for Public Administrations.

The introductory design course combines team and individual formative and summative assessment techniques. Individual summative midterm and final examinations were used to assess individual performance.Students were given the opportunity to increase their individual midterm examination marks by rewriting the same examination as a team following the individual summative assessment. This formative exercise providedstudents with a comparison of the efficacy and quality of teamwork versus individual work, and provided immediate feedback and correction for many conceptual and mechanical errors on the summative midterm examination. This paper reports on the strategy and set up of the midterm examination, the results obtained by individual students and student teams, and learning outcomes (including anecdotal comments from students regarding the experience and reduced time spent reviewing examinations with students) based on two iterations of the course.
