Purpose. The gravimetric method of weighing surgical sponges is used to quantify intraoperative blood loss. The dry mass minus the wet mass of the gauze equals the volume of blood lost. This method assumes that the density of blood is equivalent to water (1 gm/mL). This study’s purpose was to validate the assumption that the density of blood is equivalent to water and to correlate density with hematocrit. Methods. 50 µL of whole blood was weighed from eighteen rats. A distilled water control was weighed for each blood sample. The averages of the blood and water were compared utilizing a Student’s unpaired, one-tailed t-test. The masses of the blood samples and the hematocrits were compared using a linear regression. Results. The average mass of the eighteen blood samples was 0.0489 g and that of the distilled water controls was 0.0492 g. The t-test showed P=0.2269 and R2=0.03154. The hematocrit values ranged from 24% to 48%. The linear regression R2 value was 0.1767. Conclusions. The R2 value comparing the blood and distilled water masses suggests high correlation between the two populations. Linear regression showed the hematocrit was not proportional to the mass of the blood. The study confirmed that the measured density of blood is similar to water.

SUMMARY In this laboratory study, a composite resin was stained to a visibly discernible level using both coffee and red wine over 14 days (change was considered clinically noticeable and significant when ΔEab*≥2.7). Color change was measured at one, three, seven, and 14 days of staining. Although the nature of color change was different for the two staining solutions, the overall degree of staining (ΔEab*) rendered by either coffee or wine at each time interval was not significantly different (p≥0.05). Four whitening protocols were applied to stained composites. Treatment included applications of distilled water (control), Crest Pro-Health [HD] toothpaste, Crest Whitestrips, Opalescence PF bleach (15%), and application of a fine pumice polishing (Preppies). HD toothpaste and Whitestrips were applied daily for 21 days, Opalescence was applied daily for 10 days, and polishing was applied once. Each of the whitening products, applied in a manner simulating at-home or in-office treatment, was effective in producing color improvements (lightening) over controls (p<0.05), but none of the four treatments produced lightening that was significantly different from the other treatments (p≥0.05). A comparison of final composite color with that measured at baseline showed that Opalescence returned composite color to an acceptable level following exposure to both staining solutions (ΔEab*<2.7), Whitestrips returned color close to baseline for wine-stained composites, and HD paste and polishing permitted residual stain to remain (ΔEab*≥2.7).

Abstract Objective The aim of study was to evaluate in vitro the surface hardness, sorption, solubility, and color stability of three light-cured resin cements, namely RelyX Veneer (RLX), Variolink Veneer (VLK), and All Cem Veneer (ACV). Materials and Methods Cylindrical samples (15 × 1 mm) were made for each group using a metallic mold (n = 10). Vickers microhardness test was performed, and average hardness was calculated from three indentations (300 gf/15s) per sample. The sorption and solubility of the materials were evaluated according to ISO 4049:2009 based on three samples weighing: initial (m 1), after immersion in distilled water for 7 days (m 2), and final (after removal of all moisture [m 3]). The color change was observed using a digital spectrophotometer, at three different time points, baseline, 1 day, and 1 week of immersion in coffee and distilled water (control). Statistical Analysis Shapiro–Wilk test was used to analyze the normality of the data, and groups were compared using Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests. A significance level of 5% was used. Results RLX showed the highest microhardness mean values (36.96 VHN), but higher sorption (23.2 µg/mm3) and solubility (2.40 µg/mm3), with statistically significant differences with the other groups. For color stability, higher ∆E was observed for the samples immersed in coffee (p = 0.009). The VLK resin cement presented statistically significant differences from the other groups, with higher color changes in coffee at 1 day (15.14) and after 1 week (23.65). Conclusion RLX resin cement showed better hardness results. All materials tested performed satisfactorily for sorption and solubility according to ISO 4049:2009. All materials showed high-staining values after 1 week of immersion in coffee.

This study was carried out to investigate effects of oral administration of uranyl acetate on haematological parameters and liver enzyme. For this purpose, twenty females mature Albino rats were divided into four equal groups, control group G1 administrated distilled water, the other three groups administrated orally 50,75,100 mg/kg/b.w. /day of uranyl acetate. The route of administration was oral intubations for 10 weeks, for 14 days before mating with untreated males, as well as during pregnancy 3 weeks and lactation 5 weeks. At the end of the treatment blood samples were collected from mothers of rats. The results were obtained a significant P< 0.05 increase in the total WBC counts in groups G2,G3,G4 compared with control .A significant P<0.05 decrease in the lymphocytes and monocytes percentage in groups (G3,G4), while no significant decrease P>0.05 in G2 in the lymphocytes and monocytes percentage compared with control. And the results show significant P< 0.05 decrease in HB value in groups G3,G4, while no significant decrease P>0.05 in G2 in HB value compared with control. A significant P< 0.05 decrease was observed in total RBCs counts in groups G2,G3,G4 compared with control. No significant increase P>0.05 in GOT and GPT in groups G2 and G3 and significant P<0.05 increase in GOT and GPT activity in the serum in group G4 compared with control. No significant increase P>0.05 in CPK activity in groups G2,G3,G4 compared with control.

AbstractBackgroundA recently discovered hormone, irisin is accepted to be significantly involved in the regulation of body weight. Thyroid functions may be, directly or indirectly, associated with irisin.AimThe aim of the present study is to determine the effect of experimental thyroid dysfunction on irisin levels in rats.MethodsThe study registered 40 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats, which were allocated to groups as follows: 1. Control; 2. Hypothyroidism induced by injection of 10 mg/kg/day intraperitoneal propylthiouracil (PTU) for 3 weeks; 3. Hypothyroidism (PTU 2 weeks) + L-thyroxin (1.5 mg/kg/day for 1 week); 4. Hyperthyroidism induced in rats by 3-week thyroxin (0.3 mg/kg/day); 5. Hyperthyroidism + PTU. At the end of the study, blood samples were collected to quantify free triiodothyronine (FT3), free triiodothyronine (FT4) and irisin levels.ResultsFT3and FT4levels were reduced in hypothyroidism and were significantly elevated in hyperthyroidism (p < 0.001). Irisin values, on the other hand, were found to be elevated in both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism groups (p < 0.001).ConclusionThe results of the study suggest that irisin values increase in thyroid dysfunction, hypo- and hyperthyroidism, and that when hypothyroidism is corrected by thyroxin administration and hyperthyroidism by PTU injection, plasma irisin values go back to normal.

The possible effect of the crude aqueous extract of soy bean seeds on some blood parameters (total count of red blood cells, white blood cell , (total and differential) blood platelates, packed cell volume and concentration of blood hemoglobin) was studied in 20 albino female mice which were allocated in four experimental groups (5 mice/group). The first group was orally treated with distilled water (control group) while the second, third and fourth group were given a concentration of 4%, 6% and 8% of the extract, respectively. At the end of the daily gavaging, which lasted for 4 weeks, the animals were killed, after recording their life body weight, and blood samples were collected from each mice to study the effect of the extract on the above mentioned parameters. Some of the active ingredients in the soy bean seeds extract were analytically tested. This test showed that the extract contained flavonoids and saponins. The effect of the extract on the studied blood parameters is reflected by the following results: 1) Significant (P

AbstractSpodoptera frugiperda is a pest of economic importance for several crops with resistance reports to Bt crops and pesticides. Eco-friendly Bt biopesticides may be an alternative to chemical insecticides due to their selectivity and specificity. However, the efficacy of Bt biopesticides may be influenced by the association with other chemicals, such as adjuvants. This study evaluated the compatibility and toxicity of Bt biopesticides mixed with adjuvants for the control of S. frugiperda. The treatments included the association of Dipel SC and Dipel PM with adjuvants. Compatibility tests were used to evaluate the Bt mixture. Bt suspensions obtained from mixtures of Bt and adjuvants at 106 and 3 × 108 spores/mL−1 were used to evaluate S. frugiperda mortality and distilled water was used as the control. The addition of the adjuvant LI increased growth and sporulation, indicating compatibility with Bt biopesticides. The other adjuvants were toxic to reducing Bt growth and sporulation. Only the mixture of Bt with LI and Bt alone was effective to S. frugiperda. The addition of adjuvants to Bt biopesticide affect the Bt sporulation, growth and mortality.

In recent months a bumper crop of genomes has been completed, including the fission yeast (Schizosaccharomyces pombe) and rice (Oryza sativa). Two large-scale studies ofSaccharomyces cerevisiaeprotein complexes provided a picture of the eukaryotic proteome as a network of complexes. Amongst the other stories of interest was a demonstration that proteomic analysis of blood samples can be used to detect ovarian cancer, perhaps even as early as stage I.
