Abstract Flooding at small basins is characterized by weak predictability, sudden onset, and rapid disaster formation, especially in karst areas. Therefore, an accurate flood simulation will be helpful for flood control and disaster reduction. In this study, the reservoir unit is added into the original HEC-HMS model to improve the model and analyze the stagnation of the runoff process in karst basins. Then, the HEC-HMS model before and after improvement is used to simulate floods in the Xiajia basin, a typical karst area in southwest China. Before improvement, the calibration result shows that the accuracy of 31 flood simulations is poor, and the qualified rate is only 38.71%. After improvement, the qualified rate increases to 51.61% during calibration, and the simulation accuracy is increased by 12.90%. Moreover, the qualified rate reaches 61.11% during validation, and the simulation accuracy is increased by 22.40%. The improved HEC-HMS model can be applied to flood simulations in the study area and the study results can provide useful insights for flood warning and management in karst areas.

Abstract Karst basins are prone to rapid flooding because of their geomorphic complexity and exposed karst landforms with low infiltration rates. Accordingly, simulating and forecasting floods in karst regions can provide important technical support for local flood control. The study area, the Liujiang karst river basin, is the most well-developed karst area in South China, and its many mountainous areas lack rainfall gauges, limiting the availability of precipitation information. Quantitative precipitation forecast (QPF) from the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) and quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) from remote sensing information by an artificial neural network cloud classification system (PERSIANN-CCS) can offer reliable precipitation estimates. Here, the distributed Karst-Liuxihe (KL) model was successfully developed from the terrestrial Liuxihe model, as reflected in improvements to its underground structure and confluence algorithm. Compared with other karst distributed models, the KL model has a relatively simple structure and small modeling data requirements, which are advantageous for flood prediction in karst areas lacking hydrogeological data. Our flood process simulation results suggested that the KL model agrees well with observations and outperforms the Liuxihe model. The average Nash coefficient, correlation coefficient, and water balance coefficient increased by 0.24, 0.19, and 0.20, respectively, and the average flood process error, flood peak error, and peak time error decreased by 13%, 11%, and 2 hours, respectively. Coupling the WRF model and PERSIANN-CCS with the KL model yielded a good performance in karst flood simulation and prediction. Notably, coupling the WRF and KL models effectively predicted the karst flood processes and provided flood prediction results with a lead time of 96 hours, which is important for flood warning and control.

The distribution of karst landscapes over the Earth’s surface, to a large extent, follows the distribution of carbonate (limestone and dolomite) and gypsum rocks and together these make up about 12% of the Earth’s land area, and the largest karst region in to world is in Southwestern China. Characterized by a unique set of landforms, these geographical areas also differ from other geomorphic regions by the presence of cave systems in the subsurface. Unfortunately, due to human disturbances, such as deforestation, agricultural expansion, livestock overgrazing and fire, these regions have been affected by varying degrees of degradation, which could also be worsened if water and soil erosion phenomena typical of these areas are considered. Therefore, there is a need to implement measures and strategies to protect these karst areas and develop plans to restore vegetation in this region. To support local and national authorities to achieve this goal, this study aims to characterize nutrient deficiencies in degraded areas and estimate what could be the thresholds required to facilitate the restoration of vegetation in karst areas in southwest China. The results obtained confirm that the total element concentrations for Soil Organic Carbon (SOC), N, K, Ca, P, S and Mg were relatively high in the study karst area in southwest China. However, the total amounts of soil nutrients stored were very low due to the limited amount of soil identified as a consequence of previous deforestation processes undertaken within this study area and this aspect needs to be taken into consideration if aiming at a positive success of future restoration processes.

Caring for the persons with first episode psychosis is challenging and demanding. It may lead to the increased burden, expressed emotions among the caregivers. The numerous studies have shown that high burden and negative expressed emotions among caregivers can lead to early relapse in the patients with first episode psychosis. To evaluate the effects of the brief psychoeducation on the caregivers burden and expressed emotions. A quasi experimental - before and after with control group research design was adopted for the study. A total of 60 caregivers have participated in the study, of which 30 caregivers in experimental group and 30 caregivers in the control group. Family Burden Interview Schedule (Pai and Kapoor, 1981) and Attitude Questionnaire (Sethi et al., 1981) was used to assess caregiver's burden and expressed emotions. At end of the psychoeducation intervention, burden among caregivers and negative expressed emotions of the caregivers have significantly reduced. The positive expressed emotions have been increased. Study results demonstrates the importance of psychoeducation intervention in reducing the burden and negative expressed emotions.

Abstract Recently urban waterlogging problems have become more and more serious, and the construction of an airport runway makes the impervious area of the airport high, which leads to the deterioration of the water environment and frequent waterlogging disasters. It is of great significance to design and construct the sponge airport with low impact development (LID) facilities. In this paper, we take catchment N1 of Beijing Daxing International Airport as a case study. The LID facilities are designed and the runoff process of a heavy rainfall in catchment N1 is simulated before and after the implementation of LID facilities. The results show that the total amount of surface runoff, the number of overflow junctions and full-flow conduits of the rainwater drainage system in catchment N1 of Beijing Daxing International Airport are significantly reduced after the implementation of the LID facilities. Therefore, the application of LID facilities has greatly improved the ability of the airport to remove rainwater and effectively alleviated the risk of waterlogging in the airport flight area. This study provides theoretical support for airport designers and managers to solve flood control and rainwater drainage problems and has vital practical significance.

Human agricultural activities have resulted in widespread land degradation and soil contamination in the karst areas. However, the effects of reforestation after agricultural abandonment on the mobility risks and contamination of heavy metals have been rarely reported. In the present study, six soil profiles were selected from cropland and abandoned cropland with reforestation in the Puding karst regions of Southwest China. The Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction method was used to evaluate the compositions of different chemical fractions of soil heavy metals, including Fe, Mn, Cr, Zn, Ni, and Cd. The total contents of Cr, Ni, Zn, Cd, and Mn in the croplands were significantly higher than those in the abandoned croplands. For all soils, Cr, Ni, Zn, and Fe were mainly concentrated in the residual fractions (>85%), whereas Mn and Cd were mostly observed in the non-residual fractions (>65%). The non-residual fractions of Cd, Cr, Ni, and Zn in the croplands were higher than those in the abandoned croplands. These results indicated that the content and mobility of soil heavy metals decreased after reforestation. The individual contamination factor (ICF) and risk assessment code (RAC) showed that Cd contributed to considerable contamination of karst soils. The global contamination factor (GCF) and potential ecological risk index (RI) suggested low contamination and ecological risk of the investigated heavy metals in the croplands, moreover they can be further reduced after reforestation.

Considering the urgency of integrating technologies in the contemporary classrooms, the aim of the presented study has been shaped to outline the impact of inquiry-based English language teaching through digital applications on primary learners’ reading comprehension and autonomy development during a pandemic outbreak of COVID-19. The research context has been designed in a quantitative manner to analyze experiment results and compare control and treatment group learners’ reading comprehension and academic achievement levels as well as to measure primary schoolchildren’s level of autonomy before and after the treatment. The subjects’ autonomy level, curiosity and interest in reading through digital applications before and after the experiment have been evaluated through pre and post-experimental questionnaires. Learning processes of two experimental and two control groups were compared to create four research contexts for the study. Discrepancy between inquiry-based teaching through a digital library and a traditional way of teaching reading has been emphasized in the study results. The obtained data has been analyzed using SPSS to compare the academic performance results. The study revealed that inquiry-based English language teaching through digital applications highly enhanced the primary learners’ academic performance in reading and increased their motivation level to study independently.

Background:In the case of seronegative arthritis, it was difficult to make a differential diagnosis between remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema syndrome (RS3PE) and seronegative rheumatoid arthritis (seronegative RA) because the distribution of affected joints was similar and the patients with RS3PE or seronegative RA may have edema. Objectives:To compare the clinical characteristics of RS3PE and seronegative RAMethods:We retrospectively examine consecutive patients diagnosed with RS3PE or seronegative RA in our hospital from 2007 to 2019. Patients in whom both ACPA and RF were negative were included. The patients with RS3PE met the criteria of McCarty et al.: (1) pitting edema of the dorsum of both hands and both feet, (2) sudden onset of polyarthritis, (3) seronegative for ACPA and RF. (4)no radiologically evident erosions developed. The patients with seronegative RA met the EULAR/ACR 2010 criteria. The patients who were diagnosed with RS3PE at first and then diagnosed with seronegative RA afterward were included in seronegative RA group. The first analysis was performed on the affected joints, CRP, ESR, Hb, LDH, edema, the history of malignancy 2 years before and after the diagnosis, treatment, and the history of infection requiring hospitalization after the start of treatment. The affected joints were shoulders, elbows, wrists, finger joints (the MCP, and PIP joints), hips, knees, ankles, and toe joints (the MTP and PIP joints). The secondary analysis was performed on the above evaluations with a propensity score (PS) matching for age. Results:In the first analysis, 20 patients with RS3PE and 122 patients with seronegative RA were enrolled. The mean ages (RS3PE, seronegative RA) were 81.1, 67.4 years old. Females were 60.0%, 63.1%. The mean observation period was 25.4, 63.6 months. The proportion of affected joints were shoulders (25.0%, 42.6%), elbows (10.0%, 29.5%: p=0.06), wrists (85.0%, 73.8%), finger joints (80.0%, 95.1%: p=0.01), hips (0%, 9.8%), knees (40.0%, 37.7%), ankles (65.0%, 39.3%: p=0.03) and toe joints (40.0%, 32.8%). Edema at diganosis was observed in 100%, 17.21% (p <0.0001). The mean levels of the following blood tests at diagnosis were noted: CRP, 9.0 and 4.8 mg/dL (p=0.02); ESR, 87.6 and 60.7 mm/1h (p=0.003); Hb, 10.4 and 11.8 mg/dl (p=0.001); LDH, 198.3 and 177.9 U/L (p = 0.12); MMP-3, 742.5 and 633.8 ng/mL (p = 0.14). The proportion of patients with high LDH levels (>222 U/L) was 13.6% and 9.0% (p=0.0269). The proportion of patients having the history of malignancy was 20.0%, 8.2% (p=0.10). The patient treated with prednisolone as the initial treatment was 100% and 41.0%; the mean dose was 14.3 and 9.9 mg/d. After the start of treatment, the proportion of infection requiring hospitalization was 20.0 and 3.28% (p=0.002).In the secondary analysis with PS, 17 patients with RS3PE and 17 patients with seronegative RA were enrolled. The mean ages were 80.4, 78.9 years old. Females were 52.9, 76.4%. The affected joints with difference were elbows (11.8, 35.3%: p=0.10), wrists (82.4, 100%: p=0.06), and finger joints (82.4, 100%: p=0.06). The mean levels of Hb at diagnosis was 10.4, 11.4 mg/dL (p=0.01). The proportion of patients having the history of malignancy was 23.5% and 0% (p=0.03). After the start of treatment, the proportion of infection requiring hospitalization was 23.5% and 0% (p=0.03).Conclusion:When the ankles are affected and edema is observed, RS3PE is more likely than seronegative RA. RS3PE had higher levels of CRP, ESR, and LDH. The proportion of anemia was higher in RS3PE. The proportions of infection requiring hospitalization and the history of malignancy were higher in RS3PE.References:[1]McCarty DJ, O’Duffy JD et al.
