In this millennial era, English speaking skills are very necessary for young learners, especially for Vocational High Schools students. However, few teachers still have difficulties in choosing the right technique to teach the speaking skills. Consequently, students feel that speaking is the hardest skill in English. This paper is aimed at discussing how to improve the students’ transactional speaking skills (group discussion) using problem-based group discussion technique at Vocational High School 5 Gowa. A quantitative research design was used to carry out this study with support from the data collection instrument i.e. speaking video test (group discussion). The design of this study conducted using a quasi-experimental with nonequivalent control group design. Twenty (20) students in two classes i.e. ten students for the experimental class and ten students for the controlled class of the intermediate level were purposively selected to participate in this study. The results of this study showed that the problem-based group discussion technique is able to improve students’ transactional speaking skills. It was proved by the result of the statistical analysis of the level significance P = 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) = 9 indicated that the t-test values of the students’ transactional speaking skills (3.498) was higher than the t-table value (2.262). The outcome of this research indicates that this technique is effectively able to improve the students’ transactional speaking skills in exchanging information, taking a part in formal discussions and even learning to work in real-life situations

This research aimed to find out the influence of students’ interests in choosing the mechanical engineering vocational program. The research method used was descriptive quantitative. The population in this study were all Grade X students in Yogyakarta which total number were 180 respondents. The data collecting technique was using questionnaires which then was analyzed using descriptive analysis and regression. The results of this study were (1) Students’ interests in choosing mechanical engineering vocational program was high. (2) There was a positive and significant influence from students’ own understanding, family, school, and society towards students’ interests in choosing the mechanical engineering vocational program, (3) The four variables, together, have positive and significant influences towards vocational high school students’ interests in choosing the mechanical engineering vocational program in Yogyakarta..

Smartphone are tools that help life, even become daily needs for adolescents in Vocational High School (Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan or SMK) who live in urban areas. Unfortunately, not a few teenagers experience problems due to excessive smartphone use. These can include physical problems such as problems with the eyes, movement, and body position; as well as psychological problems such as unharmonious relationships with the people around them, or feeling dependent on devices. There are not many studies that describe the behavior and regulation of smartphone use in adolescents, especially vocational high school students in Indonesia. This study aims to obtain a description of the behavior of smartphone use among vocational high school students, as well as the settings up of regulations by the home and school environment. Participants are 1.921 high school students in 5 cities in 5 provinces in Indonesia (West Kalimantan, Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY), Bangka Belitung Islands, North Sulawesi, and Central Java). Data collection was carried out through a survey with a questionnaire specially designed by the researcher. Data collection was carried out before the COVID-19 Pandemic occurred. The results showed that in the period before the COVID-19 Pandemic, most students used smartphones for about 4-8 hours per day, for communication purposes. In addition, parents and schools make regulations regarding the use of smartphones. The results of this study can provide an overview, as well as a comparison for the description of the behavior of device use after the outbreak of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The main problem in formal learning is that teachers carry out learning with direct learning models and lectures. The right learning model can maximize student learning outcomes and learning objectives will be achieved. This study aims to determine the effect of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model on the learning outcomes of vocational high school students. This research was conducted through a literature review and relevant research results and was continued through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD). From the research it was found that there was a significant positive influence between the problem-based learning (PBL) model variable and student learning outcomes, which meant that student learning outcomes could be improved through the application of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model.

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) are required to face a fast-changing and unpredictable situation or condition in the future. This study describes the HOTS profile of Vocational High School (VHS) students in Surakarta and its correlation with the work readiness in the field of mechanical engineering. The students’ HOTS data were collected through the lathe technique examination, which has been tested empirically and validated by the subject matter. The result of the study showed that the HOTS profile of VHS students of mechanical engineering categorized as high, moderate and low were 36.81%, 18.68%, and 44.5% respectively. The higher thinking level of VHS students showed that students' work readiness was also higher. This means that HOTS was related to psychological, physical, and experiential aspects of the students. The result of HOTS profile could be used by the VHS teachers as the  basis to provide high quality lessons to produce graduates equipped with HOTS and better competitiveness and professionalism in workplaces.

Abstract Implementation of demonstration method in the teaching of chemistry is assigned as the right strategy to improve students’ achievement as it is proved that the method can bring an abstract concept to reality in the class. The study is conducted to vocational high school students in SMKN1 Pargetteng getteng Sengkut Pakfak Barat at accademic year 2013. The teaching has been carried out three cycles on the teaching of chemistry topic of colloid system. In the study, the class is divided into two class, experiment class and control class. The demontration method is used to teach students in experimental class while the teaching in control class is conducted with lecture method. Both are evaluated by using multiple choise tests before and after the teaching procedures, and the ability of students to answer the problems are assigned as students’ achievements. The results showed that demonstration method improved students’ achievement in chemistry. The students in experimental class who are taughed with demonstration method (M=19.08±0.74) have higher achievements compare with control class (M=12.91±2.52), and both are significantly different (tcalculation 22.85 > ttable 1.66). The effectivity of demostration method in experimental class (97%) is found higer compare to conventional method in control class (91%).
