In the present paper a low cost mechanical vibration shaker of rotating unbalanced type with uniaxial shaking table was designed and constructed in an attempt to provide opportunities for experimental testing and application of vibration in experimental modal analysis, stress relief of weldments, effect of vibration on heat transfer and seismic testing of civil engineering structures. Also, it provides unexpressive solution to enhance the knowledge and technical skills of students in mechanical vibration laboratory. The shaker consists of a five main parts shaker frame, shaker table, flexible support, drive motor, and eccentricity mechanism. The experimental results show that the amplitude of the shaker is increased with increasing the frequency ratio and the maximum value was attained near the resonance condition.  Also, the magnitude of amplitude is increased with increasing the eccentric mass and eccentricity values. A reasonable agreement with theoretical results shows that the shaker can be used with reliable results in vibration testing purposes. Also, in this paper, the frequency ranges of the shaker were determined for constant displacement and for constant acceleration tests to satisfy all the frequency limitation requirements of the mechanical shaker.

Introduction:An advanced Finite Element model is presented to examine the performance of a low-cost friction based-isolation system in reducing the seismic vulnerability of low-class rural housings. This study, which is mainly numerical, adopts as benchmark an experimental investigation on a single story masonry system eventually isolated at the base and tested on a shaking table in India.Methods:Four friction isolation interfaces, namely, marble-marble, marble-high-density polyethylene, marble-rubber sheet, and marble-geosynthetic were involved. Those interfaces differ for the friction coefficient, which was experimentally obtained through the aforementioned research. The FE model adopted here is based on a macroscopic approach for masonry, which is assumed as an isotropic material exhibiting damage and softening. The Concrete damage plasticity (CDP) model, that is available in standard package of ABAQUS finite element software, is used to determine the non-linear behavior of the house under non-linear dynamic excitation.Results and Conclusion:The results of FE analyses show that the utilization of friction isolation systems could much decrease the acceleration response at roof level, with a very good agreement with the experimental data. It is also found that systems with marble-marble and marble-geosynthetic interfaces reduce the roof acceleration up to 50% comparing to the system without isolation. Another interesting result is that there was little damage appearing in systems with frictional isolation during numerical simulations. Meanwhile, a severe state of damage was clearly visible for the system without isolation.

Within the bilateral scientific project between the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology - UKIM-IZIIS, St. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Republic of Macedonia and the Civil Engineering Faculty, University of Zagreb, Croatia, experimental testing of full scale composite timber-glass innovative panels was carried out on the seismic shaking table at IZIIS for the purpose of defining their behaviour and stability under real earthquake conditions. The seismic excitations selected for the shake-table testing of the model were four representative accelerograms recorded during the following earthquakes: El Centro, Petrovac, Kobe and Friuli. The idea was to investigate the seismic behavior of the model under several types of earthquakes, considering their different frequency content, peak acceleration and time duration. The performed tests showed clearly the behaviour of the composite panels and the failure mechanism under strong earthquake motion.

This research aims at studying the mechanical properties of industrial hemp fibers and promoting their use as a reinforcing composite material for strengthening of civil engineering structures. Natural hemp fibers are of great interest due to the following advantages they have: low cost, high strength-to-weight ratio, low density and non-corrosive properties. The use of plant fiber composite materials has increased significantly in recent years because of the negative reduction impact on the environment. For example, the tendency to use renewable resources and their possibility for recycling. They cause fewer health and environmental problems than synthetic fibers. Natural fibers, in addition to environmental aspects, have advantages such as low densities, i.e. have low weight, interesting mechanical properties comparable to those of synthetic fiber materials, and last but not least, low cost. Composites based on natural plant fibers can be used to reinforce or repair reinforced concrete structures, as shown by research on flax fiber composites. These concretes specimens strengthened with biocomposite materials have very good resistance to bending and significantly increase the rigidity of the structure. The results show that the hemp fiber reinforcement has significant effects on the strengthening and increase in flexural strength from 8% to 35 %.

Abstract Because of some advantages such as low cost, detachability and reusability, bolted joints are widely applied in various open beam-like engineering structures like steel beams and train rails and closed ring-type engineering structures like steel frames and oil pipelines to keep different structural components together. However, bolted engineering structures often encounter vibration-induced joint faults like self-loosening, crack, leakage and corrosion since they are generally subjected to external dynamic loads caused by vibration environments. Joint damages would seriously affect structures’ reliability and durability, and increase maintenance costs. Therefore, fault detection of bolted engineering structures is very important and necessary. For beam-like and ring-type engineering structures with single excitation and multiple damaged bolted joints, various methods monitoring changes in nonlinear structural features have been developed. To avoid the use of structural features from benchmark structures for reference during the derivation of damage indicators, a novel vibration-based fault detection approach utilizing features from damaged structures only is proposed in this study. In the new method, the dynamic model of bolted engineering structures is simplified as a general MDOF model with nonlinear elements simulating nonlinear bolt loosening faults. By changing the value of related mass, three similar equations from the damaged structure are used to form one matrix, and then the singularity of matrix is used to detect the existence and position of faults. Results from simulations on the beam-like and ring-type models with multiple damages demonstrate that the proposed approach could be an effective tool to estimate the state of bolted engineering structures.

Nowadays, the high rate GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) positioning methods are widely used as a complementary tool to other geotechnical sensors, such as accelerometers, seismometers, and inertial measurement units (IMU), to evaluate dynamic displacement responses of engineering structures. However, the most common problem in structural health monitoring (SHM) using GNSS is the presence of surrounding structures that cause multipath errors in GNSS observations. Skyscrapers and high-rise buildings in metropolitan cities are generally close to each other, and long-span bridges have towers, main cable, and suspender cables. Therefore, multipath error in GNSS observations, which is typically added to the measurement noise, is inevitable while monitoring such flexible engineering structures. Unlike other errors like atmospheric errors, which are mostly reduced or modeled out, multipath errors are the largest remaining unmanaged error sources. The high noise levels of high-rate GNSS solutions limit their structural monitoring application for detecting load-induced semi-static and dynamic displacements. This study investigates the estimation of accurate dynamic characteristics (frequency and amplitude) of structural or seismic motions derived from multipath-affected high-rate GNSS observations. To this end, a novel hybrid model using both wavelet-based multiscale principal component analysis (MSPCA) and wavelet transform (MSPCAW) is designed to extract the amplitude and frequency of both GNSS relative- and PPP- (Precise Point Positioning) derived displacement motions. To evaluate the method, a shaking table with a GNSS receiver attached to it, collecting 10 Hz data, was set up close to a building. The table was used to generate various amplitudes and frequencies of harmonic motions. In addition, 50-Hz linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) observations were collected to verify the MSMPCAW model by comparing their results. The results showed that the MSPCAW could be efficiently used to extract the dynamic characteristics of noisy dynamic movements under seismic loads. Furthermore, the dynamic behavior of seismic motions can be extracted accurately using GNSS-PPP, and its dominant frequency equals that extracted by LVDT and relative GNSS positioning method. Its accuracy in determining the amplitude approaches 91.5% relative to the LVDT observations.

In the recent years, poorly evaluated gynecological surgeries and urogynecological mesh implantations have been affecting millions of women in the US and across the globe. These failed surgeries could be mainly attributed to the nonavailability of vaginal tissues (due to ethical and biosafety issues), which does not allow any experimental testing of operation and mesh implantation techniques before an actual surgery. A surrogate which behaves biomechanically like the human vaginal tissue would be indispensable for simulating surgical suture of vaginal tissues in prolapse surgery, hysterectomy or surgery during traumatic child births (such as Cesarean). Also, vaginal tissue surrogates simulating the various prolapse conditions (such as vaginal tissue stiffening) would be very useful to evaluate tissue modifications due to prolapse, and also mesh and vaginal tissue interactions. In the current work, a low cost four-part silicone-based material was developed, which precisely simulates the linear and nonlinear mechanical behavior of the normal human vaginal tissue. Additionally, a range of four-part silicone-based novel materials were developed which precisely mimics the mechanical behavior of stiffened vaginal tissues at different degrees of prolapse. The linear and nonlinear mechanical behavior of all such novel materials were characterized using elastic and hyperelastic formulations. Such precisely characterized normal and prolapsed vaginal tissue surrogates have not been developed anywhere to date as per the best of our knowledge and would be clinically helpful for gynecological surgical planning in the future.

In the MEMS optical switch assembly, the collision is likely to happen between the optical fiber and the U-groove of the chip due to the uncontrollable assembly errors. However, these errors can hardly be completely eliminated by the active control using high precision sensors and actuators. It will cause the large acting force and part damage, which further leads to the assembly failure. To solve this question, this paper presents a novel low-cost three-degree-of-freedom (three-DOF) passive flexure system to adaptively eliminate the planar assembly errors. The flexure system adopts three parallel kinematic chains with a novel 3-RPR structure and has a compact size with a diameter of 125 mm and thickness of 12 mm. A novel eddy current damper with the structure of Halbach array permanent magnets (PMs) is utilized to suppress the adverse mechanical vibration of the assembly system from the background disturbances. Analytical models are established to analyze the kinematic, static, and dynamic performances of the system in detail. Finally, finite element analysis is adopted to verify the established models for optimum design. The flexure system can generate a large deformation of 1.02 mm along the two translational directions and 0.02° along the rotational direction below the yield state of the material, and it has much higher natural frequencies than 200 Hz. Moreover, the large damping force means that the designed ECD can suppress the system vibration quickly. The above results indicate the excellent characteristics of the assembly system that will be applied into the optical switch assembly.

A long-term UK research programme on residual stresses was launched in 2004. It involves Rolls-Royce plc and Serco Assurance, supported by UK industry and academia. The programme is aimed at progressing the understanding of weld residual stresses and the implementation of finite element simulation and residual stress measurement for assessing the integrity of engineering structures. Following on from this, the intention is then to develop improved guidance on residual stress modelling techniques and then to provide methods and analysis tools for design in order to control and minimise residual stress. The focus of the work to date has been to develop modelling guidelines which can be used by a finite element analyst to predict the residual stresses in austenitic welded components. These guidelines are now drafted and will be incorporated into the next issue of the British Energy R6 defect assessment procedure following peer review. The guidelines have been developed based on the experience that has been attained using various modelling techniques. To support this development, a series of welded mock-ups have been manufactured. The residual stresses in these welds have been measured using various techniques (diffraction and strain relaxation). These measurements are being used to validate the predicted stresses. It is only by corroborating each other that the resulting residual stresses can be confidently used for assessment. Mock-ups are also being used to develop material models for ferritic steel which undergo phase transformations, and to investigate how various weld parameters affect the magnitude and distribution of residual stress. Similarly, mock-ups have been manufactured to investigate the effect of start-stops on residual stresses. The programme is also supported by experimental testing to develop physical and mechanical properties which are required for analysis, i.e. up to melting temperature. Both conventional and miniaturised testing has been used to measure properties in ferritic and austenitic steels. A task has also been undertaken to develop a methodology for providing upper bound residual stress profiles which can be used as an initial estimate of stress for use in structural assessment.

In this work, we report on our efforts to develop high reliability flip chip on laminate assemblies for deployment in harsh thermal cycling environments characteristic of ground and aerospace vehicles (e.g. −55 to 150 °C). Reliability enhancement has been achieved through the use of a novel low expansion, high stiffness, and relatively low cost laminate substrate material that virtually eliminates CTE mismatches between the silicon die and top layer PCB interconnect. The utilized laminate features a sandwich construction that contains standard FR-406 outer layers surrounding a low expansion high thermal conductivity carbon fiber-reinforced composite core (STABLCOR®). Through both experimental testing and modeling, we have demonstrated that robust flip chip assemblies can be produced that illustrate ultra-high solder joint reliability during thermal cycling and extremely low die stresses. Liquid to liquid thermal shock testing has been performed on test assemblies incorporating daisy chain test die, and piezoresistive test chips have been used to characterize temperature dependent die stresses. In both sets of experiments, results obtained using the hybrid PCB laminate with FR-406 outer layers and carbon fiber core have been compared to those obtained with more traditional glass-epoxy laminate substrates including FR-406 and NELCO 4000-13. Nonlinear finite element modeling results for the low expansion flip chip on laminate assemblies have been correlated with the experimental data. Unconstrained thermal expansion measurements have also been performed on the hybrid laminate materials using strain gages to demonstrate their low CTE characteristics. Other experimental testing has demonstrated that the new laminate successfully passes toxicity, flammability, and vacuum stability testing as required for pressurized and un-pressurized space applications.
