The job of being an English language instructor is both demanding and challenging. Recently many researchers have been paying attention to determine teachers’ attitudes, burnouts, and self-efficacy towards the subject and to find a relationship between those psychological concepts and certain variables. However, there is not much research done in the field of English language teaching in North Cyprus, Turkey, and in the Middle East regarding EFL teacher burnout and self-efficacy. This study aimed to investigate the perceived levels of burnout among EFL Instructors at the English Preparatory Schools in Girne American University, Near East University and the European University of Lefke in North Cyprus using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Education Survey developed by Friedman. The study, in which 51 EFL instructors participated found that instructors experienced low levels of emotional exhaustion, low levels of depersonalization in relationships with students, colleagues, and others, and a high level of personal accomplishment in their work. An EFL instructor’s age, marital status, work experience, weekly teaching hours, job status, native or non-native status do not seem to influence instructors’ responses on each of the sub-scales of the Maslach Burnout Inventory. However, variables gender and the university they work to influence their responses related to emotional exhaustion, but they do not influence their responses related to depersonalization and personal accomplishment scores on the Maslach Burnout Inventory.

Objetivo: Analizar el nivel y la relación entre habilidades de comunicación, autoeficacia percibida y síndrome de Burnout en profesionales de la salud del servicio de urgencias hospitalario y unidad de cuidados críticos de un hospital comarcal. Método: Se plantea un estudio observacional y transversal en una muestra de 90 profesionales sanitarios de un Hospital Comarcal, 19 médicos (21,1%), 47 enfermeros (52,2%), 24 auxiliares de enfermería (26,7%). Se han usado la Escala sobre Habilidades de Comunicación en Profesionales de la Salud, el Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey y la escala de la Autoeficacia percibida.Resultados: Se obtiene una correlación negativa entre las diferentes dimensiones de la Escala sobre Habilidades de Comunicación en Profesionales de la Salud, la realización personal en el trabajo del Maslach Burnout Inventory y la autoeficacia percibida con las dimensiones agotamiento emocional y despersonalización del Maslach Burnout Inventory. Por otro lado, se observa una correlación positiva y estadísticamente significativa entre las dimensiones de las habilidades de comunicación con la dimensión realización personal en el trabajo del Maslach Burnout Inventory y la autoeficacia percibida.Conclusiones: Las habilidades de comunicación y la autoeficacia percibida de los profesionales sanitarios en los servicios de urgencias hospitalarios y las unidades de cuidados críticos están relacionadas con un menor agotamiento emocional y despersonalización, y una mayor realización personal en el trabajo. Aim: To analyze the level and relationship between communication skills, perceived self-efficacy and Burnout syndrome in health professionals from the hospital emergency department and the critical care unit of a regional hospital.Method: An observational and cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 90 health professionals from a Regional Hospital, 19 physicians (21.1%), 47 nurses (52.2%), 24 nursing aides (26.7%). The Communication Skills Scale for Health Professionals, the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey and the Scale of Perceived Self-Efficacy were utilized.Results: A negative correlation was obtained between the different dimensions of the Communication Skills Scale for Health Professionals, the personal accomplishment at work of the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the perceived self-efficacy with the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization dimensions of the Maslach Burnout Inventory. On the other hand, a positive and statistically significant correlation was observed between the dimensions of communication skills with the personal accomplishment dimension in the Maslach Burnout Inventory work and the perceived self-efficacy.Conclusions: The communication skills and the perceived self-efficacy of the health professionals in the emergency department and critical care unit are related to less emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, and greater personal accomplishment at work.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to analyze nurses’ professional burnout and health complaints and the relationship between the two components.MethodsThe anonymous survey included 94 neonatal intensive care nurses from two centers of perinatology. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) was used to evaluate professional burnout; it consisted of 3 components, Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishments, with 22 items in total. Health complaints were evaluated by 21 items, where nurses were asked to report the occurrence of symptoms within the last year. Scale means were presented with standard deviations (SD). Inferential analysis was conducted with multivariate logistic regression, adjusting for age, residence, and work experience.ResultsThe mean score of professional burnout on the Emotional Exhaustion subscale was 14.4 (SD=7.91), Depersonalization 3.8 (SD=4.75), and Personal Accomplishment 29.1 (SD=10.12). The health assessment revealed that sleeplessness, lack of rest, nervousness, and tiredness were the most common complaints. The regression analysis revealed that tiredness was independently associated with significantly increased odds of professional burnout (OR=4.1).ConclusionsIn our study, more than half of the nurses in neonatal intensive care had moderate or high levels of emotional exhaustion, while levels of depersonalization were significantly lower. In contrast, the level of personal accomplishment was low in more than half of the nurses. The most common health complaints were sleep disturbances, nervousness, and tiredness. Tiredness was most strongly associated with professional burnout.

Background: “Burnout” is defined as a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion, or a coping mechanism to working conditions that are stressful, demanding and lack of recognition. Effects of burnout are many and can eventually threaten one’s job satisfaction, relationship and also health. High patient load, long working hours, poor logistics and infrastructure support and unreasonable demands from patients make clinicians vulnerable for stress and burnout. Objective was to study the prevalence of burn out in clinicians and factors associated with burnout.Methods: The study was an observational descriptive cross-sectional study conducted among Doctors in clinical departments of a Tertiary Medical care setting in October-November 2015. Sample size was 97. Study was conducted using Maslach Burnout Inventory with additional questions on demographic factors, work experience, hours of work and speciality. The inventory comprised 22 items on a seven-point Likert scale. Frequency of symptoms (ranging from ‘0=never’ to ‘6=every day’). Burnout was measured in three dimensions - emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) and personal accomplishment (PA). The data was collected after taking Institutional ethics committee approval and verbal consent from participants. Data was analyzed using MS Excel 2007.Results: About 15% 0f clinicians showed high emotional exhaustion, 9% high depersonalization, and 18% low Personal accomplishment. More Females showed burnout than males and more clinicians from surgical branches showed burnout when compared to medical branches.Conclusions: Burnout exists among healthcare professionals and measures should be taken to identify causes and take remedial actions.

Objective: The study examines psychophysical distress of health-care professionals providing home-based palliative care. The aim is to investigate potential correlations between dimensions of burnout and different coping strategies. Methods: The present study is an observational cross-sectional investigation. The study involved all the home palliative care teams of an Italian nonprofit organization. Of a total of 275 practitioners working for the organization, 207 (75%) decided to participate in the study and complete questionnaires. Questionnaires employed were Maslach Burnout Inventory, General Health Questionnaire 12, Psychophysiological Questionnaire of CBA 2.0, and Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced. Professionals were physicians (50%), nurses (36%), and psychologists (14%). There were no exclusion criteria. Data were processed by SPSS 23 and analyses employed were Spearman ρ, Mann-Whitney U test, and 1-way analysis of variance on ranks. Results: Among participants, a low number of professionals were emotionally exhausted (11%) or not fulfilled at work (20%), whereas most of them complained of depersonalization symptoms (67%). Emotional exhaustion and depersonalization were found to be associated with avoidance coping strategies, whereas problem-solving and positive attitude were negatively associated with emotional exhaustion and positively with personal accomplishment. Moreover, using avoidance strategies was related to a worse psychological and physical condition. Conclusions: Findings suggest the need to provide professionals training programs about coping and communication skills tailored to fit the professionals’ needs according to their work experience in palliative care and aimed at improving the approach to patients and relatives.

Scores on burnout among 631 Canadian and 1,180 Dutch teachers were compared with various demographic variables (sex and age) and factors related to work (experience in teaching, type of school, and number of hours employed). Burnout was assessed with the Maslach Burnout Inventory of three dimensions, Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment. Analysis indicated that, over-all, Canadian teachers reported higher scores on Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization than their Dutch peers. Differences in the number of hours employed were also significant: full-time Canadian teachers scored higher on Depersonalization than their Dutch colleagues. Across countries, sex and type of school appeared significantly related to burnout. Male teachers rated higher on Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization than the women. Especially with regard to the attitudinal components of burnout, i.e., Depersonalization and Personal Accomplishment, secondary school teachers reported higher scores than elementary school teachers. Age was not significantly related to measures.

The prevalence of occupational burnout and its relationship to job Stressors and job attitudes were examined in physical education faculties/departments as a function of sex, age, marital status, family status, years of work experience in higher education, and type of appointment. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (Maslach & Jackson, 1986), which measures burnout in terms of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment, was the instrument used. Females, individuals 39 years or under, single subjects, coaches, and nontenured faculty/staff reported significantly higher levels of emotional exhaustion than their counterparts. None of the demographic factors was significantly associated with depersonalization or personal accomplishment. Regression analyses indicated that three Stressors—quantitative overload, job scope, and time pressure-—explained the greatest amount of variance in emotional exhaustion; organization structure and human resource development contributed the most to depersonalization. None of the job Stressors contributed to the variance in personal accomplishment.

Objective: To gauge the prevalence of burnout among postgraduate trainees and consultants working in psychiatry department, Services Hospital Lahore, Pakistan. Methods: 31 trainee and consultant psychiatrists in Services Hospital Lahore, Pakistan participated in this cross-sectional study. Abbreviated Maslach Burnout Inventory (aMBI) measured burnout. It consisted of 9 items, relating to emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment. Each item is scored on a seven-point Likert scale. For Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization, higher scores predicted greater burnout; Personal Accomplishment demonstrated the opposite, hence its scores were inverted. Participants with moderate scores in 2 or more dimensions were identified as suffering from burnout syndrome. Data was analyzed by SPSS 25.0. Result: Mean age of participants was 34.87 ± 8.06 years. 52% were female. 58% were consultants, with average experience of 7 years; 61% practiced in more than one place. 32.3% of participants had burnout syndrome. Emotional Exhaustion subscale showed the highest scores i.e. 7.06 ± 3.43. 71% of participants demonstrated moderate or high burnout in this scale. Average Depersonalization score was 2.94 ± 2.42, while that for Personal Accomplishment was 3.29 ± 2.25. Conclusion: A significant portion of the sample reported moderate and high level of emotional exhaustion. On the contrary, we found low levels of depersonalization in the sample. Most psychiatrists reported adequate levels of personal achievement. These results are reassuring because, despite the presence of emotional burnout, psychiatrists still have capacity to empathize and provide adequate patient care. Job burnout has been extensively researched in the international literature. Burnout is caused by personal and occupational factors. This study analyzes the impact of burnout with respect to different socio-demographic characteristics and job-related factors. Based on a sample randomly selected from various industries in the Lahore region, we use cross-tabulations to analyze the effects of burnout, and calculate the mean frequencies of the variables used. We measure three dimensions of burnout—emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and lack of personal accomplishment—using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey. The study finds that women score significantly on emotional exhaustion while men score higher on cynicism and lack of personal accomplishment, compared to all other socio-demographics. Education and work experience are strongly associated with burnout in women while age and income are significantly related to burnout in men. Women’s higher burnout scores are related to higher levels of education (graduates), less work experience (0–10 years), income (PKR 10,000–25,000), age (24–35 years), being self-employed, and working in the manufacturing industry. Among men, burnout is associated with white-collar (upper and lower) employee positions, work experience of 0–4 years, incomes of PKR 25,000 or more, and working in the services industry. Burnout is more significant among men than women with regard to marital status. Among job stressors, men and women are not significantly different with respect to role ambiguity, role conflict, organizational politics, autonomy, and work overload. Most of our results confirm the findings of other studies on job burnout, with the exception that the male respondents in this study experienced high burnout at an early age (24–29-year-old category), which could be due to ‘reality shocks’ or ‘early career burnout’.

Objective: Job burnout can cause physical and psychological damage and reduce job efficiency, especially in difficult jobs such as health care fields. This study aimed to assess the association between the level of job burnout and some contributing factors among health care providers in Iran. Method: This study was performed on the data derived from 1807 participants from the first phase of the employees’ health cohort in 2017-2018. The data were collected using as a self-administrated tool utilizing Maslach Burnout Inventory. The questionnaire scores ranged from never to everyday, with 3 levels of burnout as well as burnout itself; then, the scores were categorized as low, moderate, or high. Ordinal logistic regression model was used to adjust ordinal dependent variables. Results: The mean score of the total burnout was 16.5±7.77 and was associated with work experience and age group (p < 0.001). The components of burnout consisted of emotional exhaustion (8.9± 9.0), depersonalization (23± 2.9), and personal accomplishment (34± 8.6). Emotional exhaustion was related to sex (less among males, OR=0.48) and type of job (less among officials compared to health care staff, OR=0.488). Composite burnout was more common among younger staff (OR= 3.85). Depersonalization was associated with duty shift workers (OR=2.42). Conclusion: Job burnout is a major concern, and lack of personal accomplishment, as a component of burnout, was highly prevalent among Iranian health care employees. Being a single woman, health care provider, and having more than 20 years of work experience with a duty shift were contributing factors for burnout experience. Monitoring symptoms of burnout and its associated factors in the workplace and proposing an alternative organizational and behavioral system and sharing it with relevant authorities may help prevent or reduce job burnout and its deleterious effects.

The dental surgeons are exposed daily to contacts with tense and anxious patients, to a long journey of work and many times face unfavorable work conditions. They are in constant risk of developing the burnout syndrome, a process that presents three components: emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and lack of personal accomplishment. In the present investigation, the level of burnout was studied in relation to the three factors of the syndrome. One hundred and Sixty nine dental surgeons„ composed the sample of Porto Alegre's dentists that answered to the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The questionnaires were taken to their work place to be self answered. The results showed that the dental surgeons of this sample presented low levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, and very low grades of lack of personal professional situation was significantly associated to the sub scales of the MBI, suggesting that the characteristics of the organisational structure of work are more important to explain the burnout syndrome than personal variations.
