Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the in Vitro antibacterial  activity of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) leaves ethanol extract  against Shigella dysenteriae ATCC 13313.Methods: The study was performed by collecting and determining plant samples, extraction, moisture content assay, phytochemical screening, Thin layer Chromatography, antibacterial activity using agar diffusion method using perforator of 11 mm in diameter and Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC) test using macrodilution method against Shigella dysenteriae ATCC 13313.Results: The Phytochemical analysis of the sweet potato leaves extract revealed the presence of  flavonoids, tannin, steroid and polyphenolic compound. The sweet potato leaves ethanol extract showed significant zone of inhibition in a dose dependent manner against Shigella dysenteriae ATCC 13313 with the range of MIC and MBC was 10-20 % b/v.Conclusion : It can be concluded that the sweet potato leaves ethanol extract  shows promise as an antibacterial agent for inhibiting bacillary dysentery due to the presence of biologically active ingredients with antimicrobial activity in the extract.Keywords: sweet potato, Cilembu, Indonesia, antidysentery, Shigella dysenteriae ATCC 13313

Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine the antibacterial activity of Klutuk Banana (Musa balbisiana colla) fruit extracts against Shigella dysenteriae ATCC 13313 and the amount of potassium to the discovery of anti-dysentery drug candidates.Methods: The simplisia of Klutuk banana fruit was extracted with ethanol using a maceration method. The phytochemical screening of ethanol extract was performed using standard procedures. Determination thin layer chromatography (TLC) profile of the extract was performed using a thin layer plate. The antibacterial activity was investigated using agar well diffusion technique. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined by a serial microdilution method, whereas the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was done by subculturing the MIC result onto agar medium. Potassium levels of the extract were carried out quantitatively using atomic absorption spectrophotometry.Results: The phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of flavonoids, polyphenols, tannins, monoterpenoid and sesquiterpenoids, quinones, and saponins. The TLC results prove the existence of flavonoids in the tested extract. The content of secondary metabolites that can act as an antibacterial, strengthen the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of Klutuk banana against S. dysenteriae 13313 with MBC values in the range of 5-10%w/v. Potassium levels in the ethanol extract of Klutuk banana fruits contain potassium as much as 2.919% (29 190 ppm).Conclusion: It can be concluded that the ethanol extract of Klutuk banana fruits is more potent as antibacterial against S. dysenteriae than as potassium supplier in hypokalemia therapy.

The Aegle marmelos commonly known as BAEL belongs to family Rutaceae plays a role in traditional culture and medication from ancient periods. This plant lacks sufficient evidences regarding the values and components it has. Therefore, we framed out our studies to evaluate the phytochemical analysis, antibacterial activity, antibiofilm activity. These studies are evaluated using different solvents like methanol, acetone, chloroform, toluene leaf extracts of Aegle marmelos. We evaluated the potency of different solvents leaf extracts using Agar well diffusion method. Antibacterial activity was also evaluated using ELISA plate assay. The potency of different solvents extracts to inhibit biofilm of selected microbial strains. In accordance to results, the leaf extracts revealed the presence of several biologically active phytochemicals with highest quantities of carbohydrates, phenols, alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, steroids, aminoacids etc. The antibacterial activity was found significant against microbial strains of both gram positive and gram negative bacteria. These strains showed susceptibility nature towards the different solvents extracts with zone of inhibitions (mm). On the other hand, the inhibition of biofilm was also significant at all tested concentrations. The biofilm inhibition of microbial strains was found significant at 1 XMIC, 2 XMIC, 3 XMIC. Based on our studies here we conclude that the different solvents leaf extracts possessed inhibitory activity against selected human pathogenic organisms.

In the present study we evaluate the antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of medicinal plant Ipomoea staphylina Roem & Schult. Many bacteria are harmful to human beings and animals. Theses bacteria make diseases the host organisms. Many antibiotics are available in the marker for the treatment of bacterial diseases. However, antibiotics cause unwanted side effect. Thus, the study focused to evaluate ethanol extract of Ipomoea staphylina against bacterial pathogens. Antibacterial activity was evaluated by the method of well diffusion method. Antiinflamatory and antioxidant activity was evaluated by in vitro study method. Ethanol extract of Ipomoea staphylina showed antibacterial activity against different bacteria isolated from chicken at dose depended manner ie., higher dose of plant extract possessed maximum inhibition zone (21.67 ± 1.45 mm) (P<0.05) against selected bacteria. Moreover, plant ethanol extract possessed anti-inflammatory activity and antioxidant activity at dose dependent manner (P<0.05). Higher dose (100 μg/ml) of ethanol extract of Ipomoea staphylina showed maximum anti-inflammatory activity (68.38 %) and antioxidant activity (72%). From this result it is concluded that the medicinal plant Ipomoea staphylina Roem. & Schult. possessed antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Further detailed study will be conducted for the new drug candidate discovery.

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) and purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L. Lam) are commonly used empirically as traditional medicines, including for malaria, malnutrition, fever and hemorrhagic fever. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of differences in the concentration of ethanol solvents on the chromatogram profile and compound content. The research method began with maceration using 50%, 70%, and 96% ethanol, then thin layer chromatography test, and determination of total phenol and flavonoid levels with Elisa at λ of 750 nm and 415 nm, where the comparator used were gallic acid and quercetin . The results of total phenol levels obtained in papaya leaf extract were 3,493 mg GAE/gram and in sweet potato leaves the results were 4,786 mgGAE/mg. While the total flavonoid yield obtained from papaya leaf extract was obtained as much as 4,630 mg QE/gram and on sweetpotato which was 4,269 mgQE/mg. Characterisation of extract compound content was carried ouy by using Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS), where comparison of extracts used in extract combination samples are 50:50, 75:25, and 25:75. The results showed that ethanol extract contained alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and triterpenoids. Characterization by using GC-MS for single extract and combination extract of papaya leaves and purple sweet potato leaves obtained the main active compounds are Phytol, Neoheptadine, and n-Hexadecanoic acid.

Abstract Introduction: For generations, many plants were extracted to find drugs and to discover novel and new chemical structures from extracts. Maerua oblongifolia (Forsk.) A. Rich, “Sangganaa” in Dawuro language is a locally threatened traditional medicinal plant, which is traditionally used to treat diarrhea. The present study aimed to check the chemical contents of the different plant parts for possible shifting of the extensive use of the root to other parts of the plant.Methods: Phytochemical screening tests were carried out by standard procedures to investigate various classes of secondary metabolites. Roots, root bark, stem bark, and leaves were extracted by maceration in aqueous and ethanol to get crude extracts. Antibacterial effect of extracts against Escherichia coli and Salmonella thypi was evaluated by the disc diffusion method. Results: The phytochemical analysis showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, tannins, phenols, carbohydrates, and proteins in the tested parts of the plant. Antibacterial activity displayed the extracts of M. oblongifolia against tested bacteria strains in dose dependent manner. Among tested extracts, roots and stem barks ethanol extracts showed potential antibacterial activity, with zone of inhibitions (19.0 ± 1.15, 17.0 ±1.00) in 100 mg/mL, and (17.3 ± 0.57, 15.0 ± 1.00) in 50 mg/mL, respectively. Conclusion: The finding showed a possibility to shift stem bark instead of roots in the use of traditional medicinal practices to ensure conservation and sustainable use of Maerua oblongifolia. The finding also supports the traditional use of the plant’s root or stem bark for the treatment of diarrhea.

Objective: This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of bay (Syzygium polyanthum W.) and suji (Dracaena angustifoliaRoxb.) leaves against Shigella dysenteriae and the amount of potassium to the discovery of anti-dysentery drug candidates.Methods: Testing activities and comparative value activities performed by the agar diffusion method, whereas the determination of minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was done with the subculture media incubation test followed with microdilution method on Mueller Hinton Agar medium sterile. Potassium levels of the extract were carried out quantitatively using atomic absorption spectrophotometry.Results: The test results showed that the ethanol extract of both leaves had antibacterial activity against S. dysenteriae with MBC values were in the range of 10-20% w/v. Value comparative effectiveness suji leaf ethanol extract to the bay leaf was 1:0.4. Potassium levels ethanol extract of bay and suji leaves were 1.027% and 3.795%, respectively.Conclusion: It can be concluded that the ethanol extract of bay and suji leaves has antibacterial activity against bacteria S. dysenteriae ATCC 13313. Rated comparative activity of the ethanol extract of the suji leaves with bay leaves ethanol extract was 1:0.4 which means to generating resistor diameter equal to 1 part suji leaf ethanol extract equivalent to 0.4 parts of the ethanol extract of bay leaves. The minimum kill concentration ethanol extract of bay and suji leaves ethanol extract was in the range of 10-20% w/v. Both bay and suji leaves have potential as a supplier of potassium in patients with hypokalemia dysentery.Keywords: Bay leaves, Suji leaves, Shigella dysenteriae, Potassium, Atomic absorption spectrophotometry.

Hypercholesterolemia is still a health problem today because it is associated with the onset of cardiovascular disorders with various complications. High cholesterol levels carried by the blood will accumulate in the arteries that cause atherosclerosis. Blood clots and blockage of blood vessels can result in the stroke or heart attack. Flavonoids that are found in purple sweet potato leaves are quercetin. Quercetin has antioxidant effects that can improve blood vessel endothelial function, reduce LDL sensitivity to free radical effects, and reduce blood lipid levels. This study aims to determine the effect of ethanol extract of purple sweet potato leaves on LDL cholesterol level of hypercholesterolemia rat. The experiment was conducted experimentally using 2 groups of Wistar rats (each group consisting of 5 tails), namely the control group and the treatment group. Induction of hypercholesterolemia was performed with a high-fat diet for 7 days. The purple sweet potato ethanol extract was administered sonde in the treatment group with a quercetin dose of 2 mg /kg/day for 14 days and the measurement of LDL cholesterol was performed on days 10 and 24 by the CHOD-PAP method. Data were analyzed by Paired t-test. The results showed that LDL cholesterol level in the treatment group showed that 5 mice had decreased, the mean decrease of 32,49 mg/dl while control group 3 decreasing, mean 0,65 mg /dl. There was a significant difference (p <0.05) on changes in LDL cholesterol levels in the treatment group. Provision of purple sweet potato ethanol extract with quercetin dose of 2 mg/kg for 14 days can decrease LDL cholesterol level of hypercholesterolemia rat. From the results of this study is expected to optimize the utilization of purple sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) as a drug for lowering LDL cholesterol.

Abstract. Novita I, Oedjijono, Asnani A. 2021. The characteristics of fermented purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) and black rice (Oryza sativa) using UV-irradiated Monascus purpureus. Biodiversitas 22: 684-690. This research aimed to produce Monascus fermented product (MFP) with purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) and black rice (Oryza sativa L.) using UV-irradiated Monascus purpureus Went and evaluated the characteristic of its antibacterial activity against Salmonella typhi. M. purpureus was irradiated with UV at l254 nm for 0, 2, 3, and 4 min. The solid-state fermentation process was carried out for 7, 14, and 21 days. The pigments were measured at l390 nm for yellow and l500 nm for red. The ethanol extracts of MFP were analyzed for their antibacterial activity against S. typhi using the Kirby–Bauer method. The results showed that the highest yield of MFP was obtained from MFP–black rice (51.88%) that used UV-irradiated M. purpureus for 2 min and fermentation for 21 days. The highest absorbance value of MFP–purple sweet potato was obtained from UV-irradiated M. purpureus for 3 min, whereas the highest absorbance value of MFP–black rice was obtained with UV-irradiated M. purpureus for 2 min. Ethanol extracts of both MFP3–purple sweet potato and MFP2–black rice showed antibacterial activities against S. typhi with minimum inhibitory concentration values of 0.2 and 0.15 g/mL, respectively. Thin-layer chromatography analysis of the ethanol extract from MFP2–black rice revealed the presence of bioactive saponin and flavonoid. These findings suggest that UV-irradiated M. purpureus was able to use both purple sweet potato and black rice substrates to produce MFP with antibacterial activity against S. typhi.

The leaves of purple sweet potato or purple yam contain compounds that are essential and provide a good benefits for human health such as vitamins, protein, calcium, iron, beta-carotene, and etc. As antioxidant source, it can be added as an active compounds to mask which mostly used in this era. The present study aims to prepare and characterize the mask prepared using bengkuang or Jicama/Mexican turnip as basic mask, combined with an ethanol extract of sweet potato eaves as antioxidant. Mask formulation was made by the experimental method. The face mask formulation was made by mixing three ingredients namely bengkuang powder, ethanol extract of purple sweet potato and real honey. The organoleptic test, irritation test and preference test (probandus) were used to characterized three as-prepared masks (F1, F2, and F3). The results showed that the liquid (F1)  and semi-solid (F2 and F3) masks, ethanol extract of purple sweet potato leaves provides an additional aroma to the as prepared mask in wich the F3 mask has the best aroma compared to the other mask. In irritation testing, no irritation occurred after 2 weeks for the 3 formulas that were made. The subsequent studies are changes in facial skin after wearing a mask for 2 weeks, the face felt every probandus face becomes a little more moist and smoother. <p class="Default"><span>Phytochemical analysis of ethanol and water extracts of <em>Saussurea</em> <em>candicans</em> has indicated the presence of flavonoides, phenolics, tannins <em>etc.</em> that supports its use in traditional medicine both for human and animals in different parts of the world. <em>S. candicans</em> is a plant of medicinal interest hence selected for analysis. Antibacterial activity of the two extracts was tested against <span class="A5"><em><span>Enterococcus faecalis,</span></em></span><span class="A5"><span> <em>Escherichia coli</em>, <em>Pseudomonas aeruginosa </em>and<em> Staphylococcus aureus. </em></span></span>Only the ethanol extract was found to be effective. Both aqueous and ethanol extracts were prepared and studied for different phytochemicals like alkaloids, flavonoides, phenolics, steroids <em>etc.</em> and also for their antibacterial activity <span class="A5"><span>using agar well diffusion method. </span></span><span class="A5"><span>The Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and </span></span>Wavelength Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (WD-XRF) spectroscopy <span class="A5"><span>of whole plant powder were done to study the functional groups and elemental profile, respectively. The aqueous extract contains more (11) phytochemicals as compared to ethanol (9). No zone of inhibition was observed at d</span></span>ifferent volumes of the extract <em>i. e.,</em> <span class="A5"><span>20μl, 50μl and 100μl but at 150μl and 200μl concentration of 230.7 mg/ml plant extracts, the zone of inhibition was reported. The dose of 150μl concentration active only against <em>E. faecalis</em>, whereas, 200μl concentration showed activity against all bacterial strains. Only the ethanol extract had antibacterial activity against all the tested bacteria. The medicinal activity of <em>S. candicans</em> is assumed to be because of the presence of</span></span> different phytochemicals and elements. Further study can be conducted to understand the role of each and every reported phytochemicals and elements. </span></p>
