Objective: Growing evidence shows that oxidative stress plays an important role in the development and progression of nephrotic syndrome (NS). In this study, we aimed to examine serum IMA levels as an indicator of oxidative stress in children with steroid-sensitive NS (SSNS) in remission and relapse. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out at the Pediatric Nephrology Unit of Sanliurfa Training and Research Hospital, Sanliurfa, Turkey, from April 2019 to December 2019. In this study Serum IMA and albumin levels were determined in 70 children with SSNS and 45 healthy controls. Among the children with SSNS, 50 were in remission and 20 were in relapse. Then, adjusted IMA levels were calculated from the IMA/albumin ratio. Results: IMA and adjusted IMA levels significantly increased and albumin significantly decreased in children with SSNS in relapse and remission compared with those of the healthy controls. Moreover, these alterations were more prominent in the relapse group than in the remission group. IMA was inversely correlated with albumin in children with SSNS (r= −0.881, p= <0.001). Conclusions: Our findings demonstrated that elevated IMA and adjusted IMA levels observed in patients with SSNS were associated with increased oxidative stress and could indirectly reflect the degree of oxidative damage in glomerular structures. doi: https://doi.org/10.12669/pjms.36.7.2924 How to cite this:Cakirca G, Guzelcicek A, Yilmaz K, Nas C. Background: Ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) is an oxidative stress marker used to assess the presence and severity of oxidative stress. This marker was first used for early diagnosis of myocardial ischemia. Materials & methods: A variety of IMA studies were carried out to show the effect of oxidative stress on gynecological disorders. Conclusion: This analysis summarizes the literature by conducting electronic research on the relationship between IMA and gynecological disorders.

Nowadays, Ischemia Modified Albumin (IMA) has been regarded as an indicator for various maladies and complicated pregnancy in humans. Therefore, it is hypothesized that evaluation of the maternal serum IMA degrees can serve as an early detection of abortion in dairy cows. 252 Holstein cows’ serum samples were taken both in the 2nd and 6th months of their pregnancy. Twenty-two cattle were selected as a positive control group among the non aborted ones. Furthermore, blood samples from 20 non-pregnant cows were taken to identify the effects of physiological changes of pregnancy. IMA and Ischemia Modified Albumin Rate (IMAR) were markedly higher (p less than 0.01); and albumin was markedly lower (p less than 0.01) in aborted cows and healthy-pregnant cows compared with non-pregnant cows in both months. In aborted cows, IMA, IMAR and Oxidative stress index (OSI) degrees were found to be more increased than healthy pregnancies both in 2nd and 6th months of pregnancy; however, there were statistically significant only at 6th month (p less than 0.01). Total Oxidative Stress (TOS) levels were higher than healthy pregnancies. So, as a result of IMA which was caused by oxidative stress rising from hypoxia/ischemia could serve as an early bioindicator for miscarriage in cattle.

Summary Background: Impaired oxidative/antioxidative balance plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases, including cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of the novel marker ischemia modified albumin (IMA) and albumin adjusted-IMA (Adj-IMA) in patients with multi- ple myeloma (MM) as well as its association with total antiox- idant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI). Methods: Forty patients with MM (18 females, 22 males; mean age 67.55±8.39 years) and forty age/sex-matched healthy persons (19 females, 21 males; mean age 66.37 ± 6.76 years) were included in this study. Serum levels of IMA, TAS, TOS were analyzed and Adj-IMA and OSI was calcu- lated. Results: Serum IMA, TOS and OSI levels were significantly higher in patients with MM compared to controls (p<0.001 all parameters). There was no significant difference for serum albumin-adjusted IMA and TAS levels between groups (p=0.83 and p=0.17 respectively). Conclusions: In this study, an impaired oxidative/antioxidant status in favor of oxidative stress was found in MM patients. This observation was not confirmed by Adj-IMA calculation. Further studies are needed to establish the relationship of IMA and oxidative stress parameters in multiple myeloma and their relationship to MM and other cancers.

Abstract Background: It is known that the biochemical marker linked to tissue ischemia, ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), is related to oxidative stress. Cigarette smoking is a situation with increased oxidative stress causing cell damage and it is thought that many of the negative effects linked to smoking may occur after the biological material in the body is exposed to oxidative damage. This study aimed to identify variability in serum IMA levels in adolescents who smoke. Methods: This case-control study comprised 60 adolescents without any chronic disease. The smoking group was 30 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 17 years who smoked, while the control group was 30 healthy adolescents who did not smoke. Blood samples were collected from all subjects and serum IMA levels and serum nicotine metabolites were determined. Results: The serum IMA levels in the adolescents who smoked were 0.452±0.094 absorbance unit (ABSU), while the control group had ASBU levels of 0.427±0.054. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of serum IMA levels (p=0.210). There was a significant difference between the control and smoking groups in terms of serum nicotine metabolite levels (p<0.001). Conclusions: Among adolescents who smoke, serum IMA levels may not be a good marker for oxidative stress.
