Serum ischemia-modified albumin levels in adolescent smokers

Abstract Background: It is known that the biochemical marker linked to tissue ischemia, ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), is related to oxidative stress. Cigarette smoking is a situation with increased oxidative stress causing cell damage and it is thought that many of the negative effects linked to smoking may occur after the biological material in the body is exposed to oxidative damage. This study aimed to identify variability in serum IMA levels in adolescents who smoke. Methods: This case-control study comprised 60 adolescents without any chronic disease. The smoking group was 30 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 17 years who smoked, while the control group was 30 healthy adolescents who did not smoke. Blood samples were collected from all subjects and serum IMA levels and serum nicotine metabolites were determined. Results: The serum IMA levels in the adolescents who smoked were 0.452±0.094 absorbance unit (ABSU), while the control group had ASBU levels of 0.427±0.054. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of serum IMA levels (p=0.210). There was a significant difference between the control and smoking groups in terms of serum nicotine metabolite levels (p<0.001). Conclusions: Among adolescents who smoke, serum IMA levels may not be a good marker for oxidative stress.

Preliminary : Endothelial cells are a single layer that lines the entire vascular system. Endothelial dysfunction can be triggered by several main things, namely physical stress, oxidative stress and irritant substances. Obesity triggers an inflammatory process and metabolic disorders that will lead to increased oxidative stress. Long-term oxidative stress will cause damage to cells and tissues and trigger degenerative diseases. Damage to endothelial cells is expected to be detected by examining Von Willenbrand levels so that it can prevent complications of vascular disorders early. Method: This research is descriptive with cross sectional design. Carried out from March to October 2018 on the USU Campus. The first examination was done to measure body weight and height to determine body mass index, then performed lipid profile and blood sugar levels (KGD) in the sample, then examined von Willenbrand factor levels carried out in the integrated laboratory of USU FK using the method ELISA in both the sample group and the control group. The research subjects were adolescents aged 17-25 years with BMI> 25 kg / m2Data analysis was carried out using the T-Test statistical program, comparing two groups. Result: Of the 40 obese subjects found Von Wilenbrand level values ​​The lowest factor was 1.78 IU / ml and the highest was 35.60 IU / ml. Whereas in 40 non-obese subjects Von Wilenbrand grade values ​​were the lowest factor of 2.01 IU / ml and the highest was 45.10 IU / ml. Glutathione (GSH) transferase deficiency due to paracetamol exposure causes further oxidative stress to liver necrosis. To reduce oxidative stress that can cause damage to the liver of the body requires antioxidants. One plant to treat liver disease is the kelor leaf (because it has an active flavonoid material also has antioxidant activity). This study was conducted to determine the difference of glutathione hepar levels of male white rat induced paracetamol toxic dose by giving kelor leaf extract. The type of research is experimental laboratory in vivo with rancagan randomized post test only control group design. With the stages as follows 1.Leaf Extract Kelor with Ethanol 96%, 2.Perpeteration of experimental animals, 3.Treatment of experimental animals by giving extract of 3-dose of kelor leaf that is KP I 250 mg / 200 gr BB rat, KP II 500 mg / 200 gr BB rat, KP III 1000 mg / 200 gr BB rat  for 14 days combined with paracetamol dose 2 gr / 200 gr BB rat compared with the negative control group (group given only paracetamol dose 2 gr / 200 gr BB rat) and control group positif only fed regular feed for 14 days). The result showed that there was a significant difference mean of GSH levels between all treatment groups obtained p = 0,000 (p <α) p values smaller than 0.05. There was the highest increase of GSH in treatment group II (142,7525 μmol / mg) and lowest dose of GSH in positive control group (57,1812 μmol / mg), dose paracetamol toxic dosage and kelor leaf extract 500 mg / gr BB rat can increase GSH hepar p = 0,000 (p <α) p less than 0 , 05. The conclusion of the test results showed that giving of kelor leaf extract at dose of treatment group II can increase GSH hepar level significantly

Objective: The production of reactive oxygen species in exercise causes oxidative stress which disturbs the balance of oxidants and antioxidants, causing destructive effects on cells. The present study aims to investigate the effect of three types of massage (Swedish, Russian, Thai) on serum levels of Malondialdehyde (MDA), Glutathione Peroxidase (GPX) and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) following one session of exhaustive exercise. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 48 female futsal players aged 17-22 years in Zahedan, Iran who were selected using a purposive sampling method, and randomly divided into four groups of Swedish massage (Long strokes with pressing and tapping using hands), Russian massage (Medium to high pressure), Thai massage (Pressure to certain parts of the body) and Control. The exercise program was based on Bruce protocol. Serum levels of MDA, GPX and SOD were measured by before and immediately after exercise and after massage. Data analysis was performed using repeated measures ANOVA, considering a significance level of P≤0.05. Results: In all three types of massage, there was a significant decrease in serum level of MDA (0.22±0.08), and a significant increase in GPX (1.84±0.46) and SOD (10.02±2.86) levels after exhaustive (P=0.001). No significant difference was observed in the control group. Conclusion: It seems that Russian, Thai, and Swedish types of massage can affect the serum levels of the MDA (as an oxidative stress marker) and the antioxidant enzymes of GPX and SOD during the post-exercise recovery period.

Objective: Numerous epidemiological studies show an increased prevalence of metabolic diseases related to oxidation stress causing cell damage. Antioxidant supplementation is therefore useful to protect against the oxidative stress mediated disease development and has become an increasingly popular practice. In this review, a selection of clinical and in vitro studies on vitamin C and E supplementation and the evaluation of their beneficial or negative effects have been analyzed. Results: Clinical studies and supplementation trials show a correlation between antioxidants and metabolic improvement in different diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and E (α-tocopherol) appear to be among the most commonly used antioxidants. However, taking antioxidant supplements in high doses can be harmful. In some studies, little supportive evidence has been provided on substantial protection against chronic diseases by antioxidants. In addition, previous studies have revealed negative effects of antioxidant supplements such as pro-oxidant activities in particular conditions including their dosage and the body oxidant/ antioxidant status. Conclusion: Antioxidant supplements should be used with caution.

Introduction: Kembang Bulan (Tithonia diversifolia) is one of Indonesian traditional medicine that contains saponins, flavonoids, and, tannins and is predicted has a lowering effect on blood-glucose. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease caused by insufficient insulin secretory by the pancreas or ineffective usage of insulin that produced by the body thus cause a hyperglycemia condition. Hyperglycemia can cause an increase in Reactive Oxygen Species which can cause free radicals. Free radicals can cause damage to liver cells. Method: This was an experiment with posttest control group design. Samples were 40 rats, divided into five different groups (P1, P2, P3, P4 and P5). Each group were induced by multiple low doses STZ. P1 (give the extract of Tithonia diversifolia at a dose 50 mg/100 gr BB), P2 (give the extract of Tithonia diversifolia at a dose 150 mg/100 gr BB), and P3 (give the extract of Tithonia diversifolia at a dose 450 mg/100 gr BB), P4 was treated with metformin, P5 was not treated. After STZ induction and give the extract to diabetic rat model, the resulting liver cell damage will be measured using the SGOT and SGPT measurement methods. Result: On the average results of SGOT levels in the five treatments, using the ANOVA test p value was 0.877 (p> 0.05) which means there were no significant differences. Furthermore, on the average results of SGPT levels in all five treatments, using the ANOVA test p value was 0.822 (p> 0.05) which means there were no significant differences. But from all results obtained P4 (given metformin) with the results closest to normal levels (SGOT: 197.5 ± 37.25; SGPT: 90.33 ± 29.36). From the treatment given Tithonia diversifolia extract obtained P1 (with a dose of 50 mg / 200gr BB) with the results closest to normal levels compared to P2 and P3. Conclusion: The Extract of kembang Bulan Leaf (Tithonia diversifolia) obtained less significant results compared to the untreated group. However, there is no significant difference. And giving ethanol extract of the leaves of kembang Bulan (Tithonia diversifolia)  at a dose of 50 mg / 100gr BB is the most effective way to reduce levels of SGOT and SGPT.

Background: Thyroid functional disorders are relatively common in the general population. Different factors play a role in the development of thyroid disorders. These factors can be associated with the deterioration of the oxidation state of the body and the induction of oxidative stress. Thyroid hormones play an important role in the oxidation state. Objectives: Regarding the role of oxidative stress in different pathologies and the development of various complications, including thyroid disorders, we aimed to compare the biochemical and oxidative stress parameters in hypo and hyperthyroid rat models. Methods: Twenty-one male Wistar rats were assigned into three groups of control, hypothyroid, and hyperthyroid. Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism were inducted with PTU (propylthiouracil) and LTX (levothyroxine), respectively. After five weeks of induction, serum biochemical factors and oxidative stress parameters, such as TAC (total antioxidant capacity), MDA (Malondialdehyde), and the thiol group, were measured in these groups. Results: The means of TAC, MDA and UA (uric acid) in the hyperthyroid group were significantly higher than those in the hypothyroid group (P < 0.01, P < 0.01, P < 0.05) but the mean of thiol in the hypothyroid group was significantly higher than that of the hyperthyroid group (P < 0.01). Also, the mean of TAC level in the hypothyroid group was significantly lower than the control group (P < 0.05) and the mean of thiol group in the hypothyroid group was significantly higher than the control group (P < 0.05), but there was no other significant difference between the groups compared to the control group. Among the biochemical parameters, the mean LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) in the hyperthyroid group also showed a significant difference in comparison to the hypothyroid group (P < 0.05), but there was no significant difference between the groups in the mean of the other biochemical parameters. Conclusions: According to the results of this study, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are associated with a disturbance in the oxidation state of the body, and the use of antioxidants can help improve these diseases, especially in hyperthyroidism, due to enhanced metabolism and production of more free radicals.

The popularity of E-Cigarette has increased significantly over the last decade, and has potential to replace tobacco cigarettes. Aerosol which is produced by E-Cigarette, contains reactive carbonyl and free radicals, inducing oxidative stress and causing inflammation, proliferation, and cell damage. This oxidative stress can be seen through the Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the body, and reduced by antioxidant activity in Solo Garlic extract. The aim of this study is analyzing the differences of MDA levels in four treatment groups. 28 white rats were divided into four groups and three of them were exposured by E-Cigarette. This study showed that the highest MDA levels was found in the group which was exposured by E-Cigarette without solo garlic extract (7,179 nmol/ml). MDA levels can be reduced by antioxidant activity shown in the group which was exposured by E-Cigarette and solo garlic extract dose 0,05 gram/day (the smallest dose), amount 3,715 nmol/ml. The average of MDA levels in group which was given by the smallest dose of solo garlic extract, is lower than the control group. So, it can be concluded that using solo garlic extract less than 0,05 gram/day can restore MDA levels to a normal state (4,210 nmol/ml).

ABSTRACT Toilet training is an effort to train children to be able to control and urinate (BAK) and defecate (BAB). Toilet training is one of the main tasks of children at toddler age. Toilet training is one of the main tasks of children in toddler age which is very important to be done to create independence in children in controlling BAK and BAB and children know the parts of the body and their functions. Data in 2012 shows that ± 60% of parents do not teach toilet training to children from an early age. The aim of the study was to find out the effectiveness of toilet training education on maternal behavior and toilet skills in toddler age training (18-36 months). The study was conducted in July-August 2018. This type of quantitative research used the design of the Quasy pretest and posttest experiment with non-equivalent control group design. Samples were 36 mothers and 36 children with purposive sampling technique. Data analysis used Paired t test, Wilcoxon test, Man-Whitney test an Independent t test. The results showed that toilet training education through lecture methods, modules and maze games was more effective than toilet training education through lecture and leaflet methods on children's knowledge and abilities. Conversely, for the role of mothers in supervision there is no significant difference in effectiveness. Health education is recommended in health promotion programs to increase maternal knowledge, the role of mothers and the ability of toilet training children independently. Background: The role of minerals in preventing the generation of oxidative stress in obese individuals has been evaluated. Magnesium is an antioxidant nutrient and a cofactor of enzymes involved in the cell membrane stabilization, attenuating the effects of oxidative stress. Objective: To evaluate the association between magnesium and concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in patients with obesity and eutrophic women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 73 women, divided into two groups: case group (patients with obesity, n=27) and control group (eutrophic women, n=46). Measurements of body mass index and waist circumference were performed. Dietary magnesium intake was assessed by the three-day food record using the NutWin software. Urinary magnesium concentration was measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry method. Plasma concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were also determined. Results: Mean values of dietary magnesium intake were 161.59 ± 60.04 and 158.73 ± 31.96 for patients with obesity and control group, respectively, with no significant difference between the groups studied (p >0.05). The value of urinary excretion of magnesium was lower than the reference values in both groups, with no significant difference between the groups studied (p >0.05). The plasma concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances was significantly higher in patients with obesity compared to the control group (p <0.001). There was no correlation between levels of magnesium biomarkers and the concentration of TBARS (p >0.05). Conclusion: Patients with obesity showed a reduced dietary magnesium intake which seems to induce hypomagnesuria as a compensatory mechanism. The marker of oxidative stress evaluated in this study was not influenced by magnesium.

Background: There is a growing interest in the correlation between antioxidants and periodontal disease. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of oxidative stress and the impact of two antioxidants, curcumin and rutin, respectively, in the etiopathology of experimentally induced periodontitis in diabetic rats. Methods: Fifty Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into five groups and were induced with diabetes mellitus and periodontitis: (1) (CONTROL)—control group, (2) (DPP)—experimentally induced diabetes mellitus and periodontitis, (3) (DPC)—experimentally induced diabetes mellitus and periodontitis treated with curcumin (C), (4) (DPR)—experimentally induced diabetes mellitus and periodontitis treated with rutin (R) and (5) (DPCR)—experimentally induced diabetes mellitus and periodontitis treated with C and R. We evaluated malondialdehyde (MDA) as a biomarker of oxidative stress and reduced glutathione (GSH), oxidized glutathione (GSSG), GSH/GSSG and catalase (CAT) as biomarkers of the antioxidant capacity in blood harvested from the animals we tested. The MDA levels and CAT activities were also evaluated in the gingival tissue. Results: The control group effect was statistically significantly different from any other groups, regardless of whether or not the treatment was applied. There was also a significant difference between the untreated group and the three treatment groups for variables MDA, GSH, GSSG, GSH/GSSG and CAT. There was no significant difference in the mean effect for the MDA, GSH, GSSG, GSH/GSSG and CAT variables in the treated groups of rats with curcumin, rutin and the combination of curcumin and rutin. Conclusions: The oral administration of curcumin and rutin, single or combined, could reduce the oxidative stress and enhance the antioxidant status in hyperglycemic periodontitis rats.
