The socioeconomic, political and cultural integration process of the region known as Zona Oeste [West Zone], in the city of Rio de Janeiro [Brazil], was built on agricultural vocation conceiving. The spatial analysis of this work is Rio da Prata, a neighborhood of Campo Grande, in the West Zone. Using desk and field methods, the methodological orientation is given by the theoretical framework of Social Memory. A contextualization of the region is presented in a historical perspective, seeking to dialogue in an interdisciplinary way with issues inherent to representations about the urban-rural from a perspective reoriented towards to the environmental bias, and also about the notions of 'tourism' and 'leisure'. It is hypothesized that the increase of visitation in natural areas, allied to the tendency of turistification of rural communities’ lifestyle changed the people flow in the neighborhood and produced symbolic goods. This work discusses the nuances presented in the turistification process and highlights that it is the memory of what remained in the social representation as rural that draws up the local attractiveness.

Background and Objectives: To perform a retrospective report on the lethality of COVID-19 in different realities in the city of Rio de Janeiro (RJ). Materials and Methods: We accomplished an observational study by collecting the data about total confirmed cases and deaths due to COVID-19 in the top 10 high social developed neighborhoods and top 10 most populous favelas in RJ to determine the case-fatality rate (CFR) and compare these two different realities. Results: CFR was significatively higher in poverty areas of RJ, reaching a mean of 9.08% in the most populous favelas and a mean of 4.87% in the socially developed neighborhoods. Conclusions: The social mitigation measures adopted in RJ have benefited only smaller portions of the population, excluding needy communities.

The city of Rio de Janeiro underwent profound changes between 1870 and the early 20th century. Its population grew dramatically, attracting migrants not only from abroad but also from other regions of Brazil. It also expanded significantly in size, as the construction of trolley and railway lines and the introduction of real estate capital powered the occupation of new areas. Meanwhile, urban reforms aimed at modernization transformed the social ways in which urban space was used. During this period, Rio de Janeiro went from being the capital of the Brazilian Empire to being the capital of the Brazilian Republic. It nevertheless maintained its position as the cultural, political-administrative, commercial, and financial center of the country. Against this backdrop of change, the city was an important arena for the political struggles that marked the period, including demonstrations in favor of abolition and the republic. Rio de Janeiro’s citizens were not inert during this period of transformation, and they found various ways to take action and fight for what they understood to be their rights. Protests, demands, petitions, and a vibrant life organized around social and political associations are examples of the broad repertoire used by the city’s inhabitants to gain a voice in municipal affairs. Citizens’ use of public demands and petitions as a channel to communicate with the authorities, and especially with city officials, shows that while they did not necessarily shun formal politics, they understood politics to be a sphere for dialogue and dispute. The sociocultural history of Rio de Janeiro during this period was therefore built precisely through confrontations and negotiations in which the common people played an active role.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the image of Brazil and Rio de Janeiro as a blended tourism destination (TD) image, by examining the categories of the image, and whether it is positive or negative and cognitive or affective. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative approach was employed to verify the relations between the image of Brazil and Rio de Janeiro by visit, location, categories and subcategories and dimensions. Data were collected online from a “snowball” sample and were analyzed applying non-parametric hypothesis testing. Statistical analysis was performed with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software version 25.0 for Windows. Findings Results reveal that respondents share the same image of the city of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, a conclusion that is partially confirmed by statistical findings. The quantitative results also showed that the image is positive and “natural attractions” and “unique city attractions” are, respectively, the most mentioned subcategory and category. Cognitive attributes of the image have been more mentioned than affective ones. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the image of Brazil and Rio de Janeiro as a blended TD image has never been explored before, however, it has been assumed as being the same.

OBJECTIVE To analyze the social representations of the Nursing Technicians and Community Health Agents about domestic violence against women. METHOD A qualitative study carried out in the city of Rio Grande, RS, in which evocations and interviews were collected between July and November 2013. For the treatment of data were used the EVOC 2005 software and the context analysis. RESULT It is a structured representation, in which the central nucleus contains conceptual, imaging and attitudinal elements, namely: abuse, aggression, physical aggression, cowardice and lack of respect. Such terms were present in the context of the interviews. The professionals acknowledged that violence is not limited to physical aspects and were judgemental about the acts of the aggressor. CONCLUSION This knowledge may enable the problematization of the studied phenomenon with the team, and facilitate the search for prevention and intervention strategies for victims, offenders and managers of health services.

Neste trabalho, buscamos não só mapear esses embates, mas indicar o caráter ambivalente das representações, como produto e processo da relação entre os sujeitos e a realidade social.</p><p><strong>Palavras-chave:</strong> Representações sociais – Vândalos – Disputas discursivas.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Abstract:</strong> In this article, we intend to discuss how, within social protests that occurred in Brazil on 2013, especially in Rio de Janeiro, a semantic category has occupied a key role: the so-called "vandals". Singularized by the hegemonic media as the term that best signified the violent actions of some participants of the riots, the sign "vandals" has made possible the construction, via culture industry, of a series of social representations about the social protests, the participants and its acts. The same category is used, in different strategies, by those who have discursively manifested a discordance against the hegemonic media representations of the social protests through displacement and reappropriation. In this article, we will try to map such debates and also to single out the ambivalent character of the social representation, both as product and process of the relationship between subjects and social reality.</p><p><strong>Keywords:</strong> Social representations – Vandals – Discursive disputes.</p>

Abstract: How, why and for whom are urban policies for sport games in Rio de Janeiro produced? The data presented here result from a research conducted on the Pan American Games held in Rio de Janeiro in 2007. The paper is divided in three axes: official discourse; production and social appropriation of the projects; democratic city. The first axis will examine what was reported as benefits that the Games would bring to the city; in the second, the projects, the construction and the social appropriation of the equipments; and in the third, we will make a public policy proposal for what we call “a democratic city”. This analytical way allowed us to observe, analyze and present the gap between the official discourse and the interests that made up the strategies for the games in Rio de Janeiro. Keywords: globalization; urban policy; major events; Pan-American Games; networks; Rio de Janeiro.

Abstract: In the present work we analyzed the social function of the Physical Education and the sport with respect to the elderly people. It constitutes a social problem and simultaneously a challenge for institutions to eradicate the social practices of exclusion to that they give rise. For it two steps are essential. AbstractAt the beginning of Brazil's First Republic (1889–1930), the clandestine lottery called the jogo do bicho or ‘animal game’, which still exists today, gained enormous popularity in Rio de Janeiro, the city of its origin, and soon in the whole of Brazil. Reconstructing the spread and persecution of the jogo do bicho during its first decades reveals the social process of urbanisation evident in the daily, often informal and quasi-legal, interactions between the state and popular commerce in Latin America. The ambivalent official stance and public sentiment that developed toward this lottery suggest that ‘law and order’ concerns in themselves do not explain the criminalisation of vernacular practices.

Considered as the first village from Minas Gerais state, Mariana has important cultural and historical collections from the Brazilian colonial period. Currently the city has three squares in the historic center, and they are recognized for the historical heritage. Gomes Freire’s Square, set in the historic center of Mariana, has two interesting characteristics: its location behind the Main Church and the intensity use by many social groups in this city, furthermore the large presence of tourists. In the prospect of meeting its historical evolution, and identify the landscape representation in the collective unconscious of Mariana’s inhabitants, it was analyzed the evolution of the village and formation of the Gomes Freire’s Square. To achieve this goal it was necessary to deepen the knowledge of the social appropriation of this space over time, enabling the identification of the same, as well as its evolution as a public place. The study focused its interest in the village evolution, in the uses and social representation of the covered space. For this, the methodology applied was an interface between the inventive analysis, subjective method analysis, and recommendations for preservation of historic gardens. Gomes Freire’s Square, in its formation process presented as remarkable feature in its historical dimension, the fact that emerged and remained as a space of popular demonstrations.
