The University campuses represent a dominant type of organization of the living activities of students. Buildings and common features, were usually built, in a classical manner. This means that majority of the student living complexes was built in the massive and skeletal structural systems of concrete and steel. This paper deals with the possibilities, advantages and examples of an innovative structural system, named CLT or XLAM system. The XLAM system was developed in Germany around 12 years ago and it has been rapidly spreading in most European countries such as Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Nordic Countries. It is a European innovative timber based material in which timber boards, made of domestic timber species are assembled in layers and glued together crosswise in order to form massive timber wall and floor panels characterized by significant mechanical properties. Such type of structural system can serve as a models for construction of residential, commercial and student facilities in Serbia.

At the global level, the University campuses represent a dominant type of organization of all the living activities of students. This paper dealt with the architectonic analysis of common features of the recent European student hostels, which were constructed as standalone buildings. The analysis presents the advantages and shortcomings of such spatial organization. In detail are considered the common facilities, which are present to a significant degree in such spatial organization, and which can serve as models for construction of student hostels in Serbia.

Recently, the departments of Civil and Structural Engineering and Architecture at the University of Sheffield, UK, have introduced modules where architecture students undertake joint project work with structural engineering students. The experience shows that these modules have been successful and proved useful for the students from both departments. Architecture students gain a better understanding of structural efficiency and Engineering students develop a better appreciation of aesthetics and the importance of making the structural system an integral part of the architectural expression. This applies especially to the use of advanced structural systems where the three dimensional geometry of the system can contribute considerably to the quality of the project as a whole.

В статье доказана порочность переустройства только одной структурной системы (реструктуризации), так как это чревато поломками элементов, звеньев и блоков, сомой системы кожной службы. Допустимо лишь незначительная адаптация к конкретным условиям больниц, где это будет внедряться. Сформулированы понятия конечного результата работы врачей и структурных подразделений медицинских стационаров в современных условиях общественно-политической формации. Описаны преимущества реконструкции комплекса систем судебно-медицинской экспертизы как экспериментальной службы для кожного отделения городской многопрофильной больницы и работы самого кожного отделения. Описана форма структурного построения судебно-медицинской и кожной служб. По аналоги с экспертным учреждением ожидаются аналогичные изменение конечного результата в кожном подразделении многопрофильного стационара The article proves the viciousness of the reorganization of only one structural system (restructuring), since this is fraught with breakdowns of elements, links and blocks, the soma of the skin service system. Only slight adaptation to the specific conditions of the hospitals where it will be implemented is acceptable. The concepts of the final result of the work of doctors and structural units of medical hospitals in the modern conditions of the socio-political formation are formulated. The advantages of reconstruction of a complex of forensic medical examination systems as an experimental service for the skin department of a city multidisciplinary hospital and the work of the skin department itself are described. The form of structural structure of forensic and skin services is described. By analogy with an expert institution, a similar change in the final result is expected in the skin department of a multidisciplinary hospital

Horizontal loads such as earthquake and wind are considered dominant loads for the design of tall buildings. One of the most efficient structural systems in this regard is the tube structural system. Even though such systems have a high resistance when it comes to horizontal loads, the shear lag effect that is characterized by an incomplete and uneven activation of vertical elements may cause a series of problems such as the deformation of internal panels and secondary structural elements, which cumulatively grow with the height of the building. In this paper, the shear lag effect in a typical tube structure will be observed and analyzed on a series of different numerical models. A parametric analysis will be conducted with a great number of variations in the structural elements and building layout, for the purpose of giving recommendations for an optimal design of a tube structural system.

Abstract Diversity and inclusion are essential perspectives on university campuses. In recent years, there has been a nationwide decline in admissions resulting in changes to traditionally FTIAC driven college campuses. An environmental scan was completed at a mid-sized midwestern university to explore age-inclusive barriers and opportunities for change. In-depth interviews were held with 28 EMU stakeholders representing a wide variety of ages in leadership positions across campus. Students aged 40 and above (N=248) were also surveyed about their experiences on campus. Qualitative analysis revealed ageist attitudes about older adults and older students from at all levels of the university. Results demonstrate that initial responses to ‘age-friendly’ focused on stereotypes of older adults, but attitudes adjusted when reframed as older learners and further refined when older learners were defined as 40 and above. Additionally, there was a distinct disconnect between ageist perceptions towards older adults and older students which highlights the importance of intergenerational opportunities as an approach to combat ageist attitudes on campus. While these barriers require long-term and complicated solutions, participants described the many benefits that older learners bring to enrich the campus. Results of this research revealed opportunities to reframe aging in the context of diversity and inclusion efforts on campus. Adopting diversity efforts to include age can benefit universities in not only admissions, classroom experiences, and connections to surrounding communities.

This paper presents the application of the observability technique for the structural system identification of 2D models. Unlike previous applications of this method, unknown variables appear both in the numerator and the denominator of the stiffness matrix system, making the problem non-linear and impossible to solve. To fill this gap, new changes in variables are proposed to linearize the system of equations. In addition, to illustrate the application of the proposed procedure into the observability method, a detailed mathematical analysis is presented. Finally, to validate the applicability of the method, the mechanical properties of a state-of-the-art plate are numerically determined.

PurposeUsing the campus of a Brazilian university as case study, this research aims to identify which aspects of the outdoor spaces are the most significant in attracting people.Design/methodology/approachThis research relies on the application of different post-occupancy evaluation (POE) methods, including user tracking, behavioural mapping and questionnaires, on one plateau of the campus.FindingsThree group of aspects (socialization, proximity and infrastructure) were identified as key elements in explaining the impact of the campus physical characteristics on users’ behaviour. The results indicate that having characteristics of at least one group of aspects in those spaces can guarantee their vitality and, if there is presence of attributes of more than one group, liveliness can be increased.Research limitations/implicationsFurther studies should be conducted on an entire campus to identify other spatial elements in the three groups.Practical implicationsThis research contributes to the planning of future campuses and to solutions to the existed ones, indicating the most relevant spatial characteristics to be considered. Additionally, the combination of different methods may be useful to future research.Originality/valueMost of the investigations on the university campuses focus on the buildings, and little research has investigated the outdoor spaces, although they play a critical role in learning and academic life, where people establish social, cultural and personal relationships. In addition, studies using several POE allowed a consistent and complete diagnostic about the aspects of the campus, giving recommendations for future projects.

Chinese international students have been the largest growing number of international students on U.S. college and university campuses for the last ten years. However, there is minimal research literature that pertains to Chinese international students’ experiences on U.S. campuses and currently no research literature that reflects the entirety of their experience studying in the U.S. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to give a voice to Chinese international students who are preparing for the university-to-work transition to better understand their experiences as international students in the United States, specifically the types of transitional stressors they experienced and how they coped with these stressors. Five major themes and the essence of the participants emerged from the data analysis and are presented, discussed, and implication for campus based mental health professionals are provided.

Uncivil behavior has recently been a topic of concern within university campuses. Administration, faculty, and students are all subject to engage or experience uncivil conduct. Academic civility is a fundamental variable to establish a positive university environment and teaching-learning outcomes. Objective: The present paper analyzes the concept of civility and incivility within an academic context, offers a dimension perspective of the problem, reviews contributing factors associated with incivility, explores preventative measures for incivility, investigates academic strategies that promote civility, and makes recommendations for intervention strategies. A study that examines relationships between civility, university identification and satisfaction with the university was conducted. Methods: undergraduate students (N=588) from a state university answered a survey that evaluated three variables: civility, university identification, and university satisfaction. Results: Civility was positively related to university identification (r = .11, p = .009) and satisfaction (r = .16, p < .001), and identification was related to greater satisfaction with the university (r = .75, p < .001). Conclusion: Greater levels of civility are correlated with university identification and satisfaction. In order to improve teaching-learning environments, academic institutions are encouraged to promote an environment that is conducive to civility, as well as establish civil behaviors as part of their instruction.
