In the work, the processes of phase reconstruction and properties of ceramics obtained from high-siliceous clay-sand, clay-cullet, and clay-sand-cullet mixtures are considered. It is possible to perform plastic molding of blanks from the given mixtures due to the presence of montmorillonite in clay and sand and sintering at 800 oC for 8 h under conditions of oxygen deficiency. Depending on the composition of the initial mixtures, specimens ranging in color from gray to black can be obtained. It has been established by the XRD, IR spectroscopy, and electron microscopy methods that the synthesized material is glass ceramics consisting of quartz, feldspars, and a glass phase. Depending on the content of the initial components in the mixtures, it is possible to obtain glass ceramics with high strength properties or coarse-pored glass ceramics whose properties are similar to those of foamed ceramics.

The paper shows the possibility of production of the expanded clay aggregate with the use of electric steel melting slag up to 3.0 % produced by JSC “Oskol Electric Steel Works”. It was determined that at the temperature of 1170 °C the expanded clay aggregate with high strength properties and a high coefficient of swelling is formed. The preliminary thermal preparation of the samples with slag addition was at 500 oC. An opportunity to use iron-containing waste was revealed which lowers the temperature of the expanded clay aggregate burning. By means of the X-ray phase analysis the mineral mullite Al5SiO9.5 was found in the resulted samples of the expanded clay aggregate with an optimal addition of slag which reinforces a glass phase of granules and strengthens it. The results can be used for production of the expanded clay gravel with the use of industrial wastes. The technological scheme of the expanded clay production with the use of waste can be carried out without making any additional capital investments.

The morphology and microstructure of an Al2O3 glass composite (trade name In-Ceram, Vita Zahnfabrik) were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The composite was produced by infiltration of a lanthanum-based glass throughout a porous Al2O3 body. This alumina body was formed by three classes of particles differing in size and shape: faceted particles typically ≤4 μm in diameter, platelets of average diameter 8 μm, 1.5 μm thickness, and small spheres 0.4 μm in diameter. The outstanding strength properties of the composite (600 MPa, ball-on-ring test) are a result of the high wetting capability of the glass phase on the Al2O3 surface. In addition, plastic strain relaxation in the faceted particles by dislocation formation compensates partially for residual stresses and impedes crack formation at the glass/Al2O3 interface.

High-strength screws represent one of the main joining or fastening components which are commonly used in the process of installation of frame constructions for information boards or signposts, relating to the traffic roads. The control of the production process may not always be a sufficient method for ensuring road safety. The backward investigation and control of the screw material processing seems to be the one of the most important procedures when there is the occurrence of any failure during the operation of the screw. This paper is mainly focused on the analysis of the failure of the high-strength screw of 10.9 grade with M diameter of 27 × 3 and a shank length of 64 mm. The mentioned and investigated screw was used as a fastener in a highway frame construction. In the paper, there is mainly the analysis of the material for a broken screw in terms of the material micropurity, the material microstructure, the surface treatment as well as chemical composition. The evaluation was based on investigation by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Important knowledge and results were also obtained due to information on micromorphology and material contrast of the fracture surface resulting from fractographic analysis, using the method of scanning electron microscopy. In the case of the production of the high-strength screws, the tempering stands for the decisive or crucial process of heat treatment because the given process can ensure a decrease in hardness, while the required ductile properties of the material are kept and this is also reflected in the increase of strength and micromorphology of the fracture surface. From the aspect of micropurity, inclusions of critical size or distribution were not identified in the material, referring to Czech standard ČSN ISO 4967 (420471). The microstructure corresponds to tempered martensite, but the fracture surface of the broken screw was based on an intercrystalline micromechanism, which is undesirable for the given type of component. Combined with the measurement of the HV1 (Vickers hardness at a load of 1 kg) from the edge to the central area of the screw, the analysis revealed the significant drawbacks in the heat treatment of the high-strength screw.

Very few electron microscopy papers have been published on the atomic structure of the copper oxide based superconductor surfaces. Zandbergen et al. have reported that the surface of YBa2Cu3O7-δ was such that the terminating layer sequence is bulk-Y-CuO2-BaO-CuO-BaO, whereas the interruption at the grain boundaries is bulk-Y-CuO2-BaO-CuO. Bursill et al. reported that HREM images of the termination at the surface are in good agreement with calculated images with the same layer sequence as observed by Zandbergen et al. but with some oxygen deficiency in the two surface layers. In both studies only one or a few surfaces were studied.

Light weight materials which possess high strength and durability are being utilized by the automotive industry to increase fuel economy. Rapidly solidified (RS) Al alloys are currently being extensively studied for this purpose. In this investigation the microstructure of an extruded Al-8Fe-2Mo alloy, produced by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, Goverment Products Div. was examined in a JE0L 2000FX AEM. Both electropolished thin sections, and extraction replicas were examined to characterize this material. The consolidation procedure for producing this material included a 9:1 extrusion at 340°C followed by a 16:1 extrusion at 400°C, utilizing RS powders which have also been characterized utilizing electron microscopy.

Different strategies aimed at reducing the negative impact of fillers on paper strength have been the objective of many studies during the past few decades. Some new strategies have even been patented or commercialized, yet a complete study on the behavior of the filler flocs and their effect on retention, drainage, and formation has not been found in literature. This type of research on fillers is often limited by difficulties in simulating high levels of shear at laboratory scale similar to those at mill scale. To address this challenge, a combination of techniques was used to compare preflocculation (i.e., filler is flocculated before addition to the pulp) with coflocculation strategies (i.e., filler is mixed with a binder and flocculated before addition to the pulp). The effect on filler and fiber flocs size was studied in a pilot flow loop using focal beam reflectance measurement (FBRM) and image analysis. Flocs obtained with cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) and bentonite were shown to have similar shear resistance with both strategies, whereas cationic starch (CS) was clearly more advantageous when coflocculation strategy was used. The effect of flocculation strategy on drainage rate, STFI formation, ash retention, and standard strength properties was measured. Coflocculation of filler with CPAM plus bentonite or CS showed promising results and produced sheets with high strength but had a negative impact on wire dewatering, opening a door for further optimization.

AbstractThe low-temperature synthesis of bricks prepared from high-siliceous clays by the method of plastic molding of blanks was used. For the preparation of brick blanks, binary and ternary mixtures of high-siliceous clays, black sand, and bottle glass cullet were used. Gray-black low-porosity and high-porosity ceramics was obtained by sintering under conditions of oxygen deficiency. It has been established that to initiate plastic in mixtures containing high-siliceous clay, it is necessary to add montmorillonite/bentonite additives, carry out low-temperature sintering, and introduce low-melting glass additives with a melting point ranging from 750 to 800 °C. The performed investigations have shown that the sintering of mixtures with a total content of iron oxide of about 5 wt% under reducing conditions at Tsint. = 800°C for 8 h leads to the formation of glass ceramics consisting of quartz, feldspars, and a phase. The main sources of the appearance of a dark color is the formation of [Fe3+O4]4- and [Fe3+O6]9- anions in the composition of the glass phase and feldspars. By changing the contents of clay, sand, and glass in sintering, it is possible to obtain two types of ceramic materials: (a) in the form of building bricks and (b) in the form of porous fillers.

Gear pumps are an important element of many production systems and their replacement in case of failure can be quite expensive, so it is important to have a modern and well-tuned technology for their recovery. There are many methods for restoring the pump's performance, depending on the reason that led to its failure. (Research purpose) The research purpose is in determining what causes most often lead to loss of pump performance, and developing a recovery method that provides the greatest post-repair service life of the pump and low cost of repair. (Materials and methods) Authors took into account that the applied coatings must have sufficient adhesion strength and resistance to mechanical, thermal and corrosion loads during operation. It was found that most often significant leaks of the working fluid, leading to failure, occur due to an increase in the gap between the inner surface of the housing and the gears due to active wear of the housing wells. Authors determined that the method of electric spark treatment of worn-out housing wells is best suited to perform the task (a large post-repair resource and low costs). (Results and discussion) It was found by laboratory studies of the adhesion strength of electric spark coatings with various electrodes that the best transfer of the material to the substrate is provided by bronze electrodes BrMKts3-1. It was noted that the coatings applied using the BrMKts3-1 electrode have high strength properties. (Conclusions) Research conducted in the center for collective use "Nano-Center" VIM confirmed the possibility of effective recovery of the gear pump by electric spark treatment.

This review paper concerns the development of the chemical compositions and controlled processes of rolling and cooling steels to increase their mechanical properties and reduce weight and production costs. The paper analyzes the basic differences among high-strength steel (HSS), advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) and ultra-high-strength steel (UHSS) depending on differences in their final microstructural components, chemical composition, alloying elements and strengthening contributions to determine strength and mechanical properties. HSS is characterized by a final single-phase structure with reduced perlite content, while AHSS has a final structure of two-phase to multiphase. UHSS is characterized by a single-phase or multiphase structure. The yield strength of the steels have the following value intervals: HSS, 180–550 MPa; AHSS, 260–900 MPa; UHSS, 600–960 MPa. In addition to strength properties, the ductility of these steel grades is also an important parameter. AHSS steel has the best ductility, followed by HSS and UHSS. Within the HSS steel group, high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel represents a special subgroup characterized by the use of microalloying elements for special strength and plastic properties. An important parameter determining the strength properties of these steels is the grain-size diameter of the final structure, which depends on the processing conditions of the previous austenitic structure. The influence of reheating temperatures (TReh) and the holding time at the reheating temperature (tReh) of C–Mn–Nb–V HSLA steel was investigated in detail. Mathematical equations describing changes in the diameter of austenite grain size (dγ), depending on reheating temperature and holding time, were derived by the authors. The coordinates of the point where normal grain growth turned abnormal was determined. These coordinates for testing steel are the reheating conditions TReh = 1060 °C, tReh = 1800 s at the diameter of austenite grain size dγ = 100 μm.
