This review paper provides data about research activities at the School of the turbulent swirling flow at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Belgrade, conducted in the period 1941 up to date. An overview is provided of the main directions in this research area. First papers dealt with the turbulent swirling flow in hydraulic turbines to be continued by the experimental and analytical approaches on the axial fans pressure side. The complexity of 3-D, non-homogeneous, anisotropic turbulent velocity fields required complex experimental and theoretical approach, associated with the complex numerical procedures. Analytical approaches, complex statistical analyses and experimental methods and afterwards CFD employed in the research are presented in this paper. The 150 scientific papers, numerous diploma works, several master of science (magister) theses, six Ph. D. theses and two in progress, 40 researchers, national and international projects are the facts about the School. Scientific references are chronologically presented. Numerous abstracts from scientific conferences, presentations, projects with industry and lectures are not given here.

AbstractArtificial intelligence (AI) and law is an AI research area that has a history spanning more than 50 years. In the early stages, several legal-expert systems were developed. Legal-expert systems are tools designed to realize fair judgments in court. In addition to this research, as information and communication technologies and AI technologies have progressed, AI and law has broadened its view from legal-expert systems to legal analytics and, recently, a lot of machine-learning and text-processing techniques have been employed to analyze legal information. The research trends are the same in Japan as well and not only people involved with legal-expert systems, but also those involved with natural language processing as well as lawyers have become interested in AI and law. This report introduces the history of and the research activities on applying AI to the legal domain in Japan.

SummaryIn 2005, Medical Informatics Laboratory (CMIL) became an independent research unit within the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Casablanca. CMIL is currently run by three persons (a university professor, a data processing specialist and a pedagogical assistant). The objectives of CMIL are to promote research and develop quality in the field of biomedical data processing and health, and integrate new technologies into medical education and biostatistics. It has four units: Telehealth Unit, Network Unit, Biostatistics Unit, Medical data processing Unit.The present article seeks to give a comprehensive account of Casablanca Medical informatics laboratory (CMIL) activities. For ease of exposition, the article consists of four sections: Section I discusses the background of CMIL; section II is devoted to educational activities; section III addresses professional activities; and section IV lists projects that CMIL is involved in.Since its creation, CMIL has been involved in a number of national and international projects, which have a bearing on Telemedicine applications, E-learning skills and data management in medical studies in Morocco.It is our belief that the skills and knowledge gained in the past few years would certainly enrich our research activities, and improve the situation of research in Medical informatics in Morocco.

The paper raises the problem of building the communicative competence of academics. Analysis of the theoretical material of the research helps further investigate the process of learning a foreign language by postgraduates within departmental educational milieu and define the foreign-language communicative competence of a research academician. In accordance with the logic of the presented research, the author uses a complex of complementary methods. They are theoretical research (systematic and theoretical analysis, studying the references in Pedagogy and Methodology of teaching a foreign language, comparative analysis of the Russian and foreign experience, considers the peculiarities of the content of research academicians training in a foreign language), pedagogical research (discussion, supervision, interview). The author stresses the necessity to improve the substantive component of foreign language training of the researcher, taking into account the professional orientation, the use of professional terminology by those who are engaged in research activities. That makes them capable of doing interpretation, précis-writing and abstracting scientific papers in English, thus building their foreign-language communicative competence. The author concludes that in the educational process it is advisable to use a manual, an interactive dictionary and a thesaurus for the successful organization of the process of building the foreign-language communicative competence of the research academician. The content of the materials mentioned above should be aimed at forming postgraduates’ readiness to participate in Russian and international research teams and use modern scientific terminology in a foreign language in various international scientific and representative conferences.

The aim of the article is the theoretical development of non-formal, fundraising and bilingual models of future social sphere specialists training on the basis of the goals of sustainable development in education. The study is based on preliminary processing of European and Ukrainian documents on sustainable development, numerous scientific papers on the problem of sustainable development, theoretical developments and experimental research in the field of social sphere specialists training. Each of the developed models has passed the corresponding approbation and is supported by the author’s experience of practical professional training of future social sphere specialists at the Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University. The model of future social workers non-formal education ensures the integration of professional competencies of future social workers. Fundraising training of future social workers on the basis of sustainable development involves the use of the necessary fundraising tools to ensure the development of social capital, the formation of a society of social justice, the deployment of numerous non-governmental organizations at the global and local levels. The bilingual model provides empowerment of social workers to study, do internships, work, borrow positive experiences, participate in international projects, and collaborate with professionals in their field from around the world.

The present paper is reffer to the original research carried out for the first time in Romania in the period spring-autumn 2009 and had the proposed objective the development of an ecological based pest management experimental model on the blackcurrant crops. In the first stage of the research the collecting of biological material using specific methods from different structural components (stratifications) of biotopes of the ecosystem upon which follows the identification and the species classifications in pest and useful for the management system proposed.The monitoring performed is referring so to the surveillance of arthropods populations dynamics correlated with the command factors and with share of those factors in the research area. The research activities of the stage are including: The biological material collecting; The present arthropod species identification; The arthropods fauna structure and biodiversity highlighting (number of individuals, number of species, density and relative abundance, dominant populations); The biodiversity of blackcurrant crops investigated by qualitative and quantitative methods was divided on a preliminary analysis (which will be thorough by the route of testing/experimentation of the ecological management system by specific statistical methods) in the frame of the structure highlight by the vegetation period of the crop. The arthropods identified are including: Characteristic species of the fauna of the soil level, on the soil or on the low plants (phytophagous, predators, coprophagous, necrophagous and detritophagous); Specific pest species; Polyphagous species (phytophagous, predators); Species without any trophyc correlations with blackcurrant crop, characteristic of surrounding crop with the accidentally presence. In the study two experimental surfaces of blackcurrant in which EBPM is applied (plot I and II) in comparison with one check plot with intensive crop management will be investigated.The arthropod populations identified belongs to 5 classes, 15 taxonomic orders, 35 families, 61 genuses and 67 species (plot I) and 5 classes, 17 taxonomic orders, 40 families, 60 genuses and 65 species (plot II).

International collaboration and research funding in Sea Level Rise (SLR) research are investigated in this chapter. SLR can be taken as a paradigmatic research area to study the international scientific collaboration and research funding efforts because it is affecting the whole planet and is an interdisciplinary research area involving disciplines belonging to the geosciences but also the life sciences, technology sciences, and social sciences. The aim of the chapter is to identify the main stakeholders in the topic, institutions, and countries; analyze overlapping efforts; identify possible research gaps; and to study the role played by the funding agencies. Bibliometrics and a social network analysis approach are applied. Co-occurrence networks of keywords, affiliations, and funding agencies among scientific papers in Thomson Reuters' Web of Science Core Collection in the SLR topic are analyzed. Conclusions show that international scientific collaboration is common in SLR, but international co-financing is less frequent.

This paper aims to describe how additive manufacturing can be useful in enhancing a robotic course, allowing students to focus on all aspects of the multidisciplinary components of this subject. A three-year experience of the course of “robotic system design” is presented to support the validity of the use of this technology in teaching. This course is specifically aimed at Master of Science (MSc) Mechanical Engineering students and therefore requires one to view the subject in all its aspects including those which are not conventionally taken into consideration such as mechanical design, prototyping and the final realization.

Abstract The objectives of this study were to evaluate the current status of exposure to bio-engineering research in community college (CC) students and University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) students, and to estimate relationships between research activities sponsored by the Mechanical Engineering (ME) S-STEM Scholarship Program and improvement in student enrollment/diversification, retention rates, and graduation rates. The analysis drew on data from ME undergraduate academic records at UMBC from 2008 to 2019. A survey was designed to assess the research exposure of CC and UMBC students and their evaluation of the research components included in recruitment and curriculum activities. Results show that exposure to research measured by attending a research seminar was low for the participants, around 37% for CC students and 21% for ME students at UMBC. The survey results indicate the positive impact of the scholarship programs at UMBC on the research exposure and research experience. The impact is more evident in students who originally transferred from a CC. The large increase in recruited female and CC students over the past 10 years indicated that the research-related activities of the ME S-STEM program played an instrumental role in those increases. Because of the research-related activities, the ME S-STEM program achieved retention and graduation rates higher than those in the ME undergraduate program (89% versus 60% for the 6 year graduation rate), as well a higher percentage of students enrolled in graduate school (30% versus 10%). We conclude that there is still a need to implement research-related activities in the ME undergraduate program, starting with student recruitment and continuing through the academic program. Results suggest that there is a positive impact of ME S-STEM research activities on student diversification, retention rates, and percentage of our graduates who are pursuing graduate degree.

Abstract Over the past 50 years, researchers have repeatedly proposed the establishment of a new interdisciplinary engineering field in Engineering for Global Development (EGD), whose analytical tools and design processes result in positive social impacts and poverty alleviation in a global development context. Within each discipline and research area, a growing body of work has sought to systematically create scientific knowledge in this area. However, a recent network analysis of Human-Centered Design plus Development research indicates that sub-communities are not collaborating at a high level and therefore the overall research agenda may lack cohesion. This paper presents a descriptive analysis of EGD research within mechanical engineering along four dimensions through a systematic literature review and secondary data analysis. Results from the review and a Latent Dirichlet Allocation model indicate EGD work in mechanical engineering draws upon research methodologies from a number of other fields and has low levels of consensus on technical terminology. These results suggest consensus in the broader interdisciplinary EGD field should be examined.

The additive manufacturing represents a new production method of composites reinforced with a continuous fibre. In recent times, the material produced by this new manufacturing method constituted a replacement for conventional materials—e.g., steel in many technical areas. As the research on FRTP composites is currently under way, the purpose of this article is to add information to the mosaic of studies in this research area. The scientific articles published until now have focused especially on mechanical testing, such as tensile and bending mechanical testing and their assessment. Therefore, the authors decided to carry out and assess the impact test of the FRTP composites produced by 3D printing because this area offers a large extent of research activities. We observed the influence of the reinforcement in the form of the micro-fibre carbon in the thermoplastic (Onyx) or a continuous reinforcement fibre in the lamina on the specimen’s behaviour during the impact load processes. The results of the experimental measurements show that the presence of a continuous fibre in the structure significantly affects the strength of the printed specimens; however, the design process of the printed object has to take into account the importance of selecting a suitable fibre type. The selection of a suitable strategy for arranging the fibre in the lamina and the direction of the impact load against the position of the fibre seem to be very important parameters.
