We examine how managers orchestrate their eco-control package in reaction to different perceived environmental stakeholder pressures. Using survey data from Canadian manufacturing firms, our results show that environmental pressures perceived from societal stakeholders have a greater influence on the integration of environmental objectives into strategic planning than pressures perceived from business stakeholders. This suggests that business stakeholders act as a force that mostly maintains the scope of strategic environmental orientations, while societal stakeholders act as a force that mostly expands the scope of strategic orientations by stimulating further consideration of environmental issues as strategic objectives. The integration of environmental objectives in strategic planning stimulates a domino effect within the eco-control package, where the adaptation of strategic objectives leads to greater mobilization of other eco-controls. This domino effect represents successive effects among components of the eco-control package, revealing how stakeholder pressures play a role in stimulating multi-layered changes in eco-control mobilization.

The challenge of global climate change requires a radical change in our understanding of environmental issues, for its causes are linked to our dominant development model and its impact is significant at the grassroots level. Addressing energy production and consumption remains at the heart of any feasible solution. In this article, I define energy management (EM) as a systemic and systematic endeavor to optimize energy use through engineering and management tools in order to achieve political, economic, and environmental objectives. I also discuss what underpins EM’s ethical dimension, focusing on sustainability, and critically analyze the Islamic perspective to elaborate a value-based, universally acceptable, realistically applicable, and objective environmental ethic. By using EM as a vehicle toward sustainability, hence addressing climate change, I evaluate the outcomes of such a radical change in our understanding of environmental issues. I conclude by investigating whether a difference in vision with regard to faith and the hereafter can hinder a common engagement. Evidence is also sought from relevant specialist studies by non-Muslims, in which such Islamic principles as ordering the good and prohibiting the evil, ijmā‘, istiḥsān, istiṣḥāb, or istiṣlāḥhave been implemented to a given extent in all but name.

Purpose Seaports have gained importance in recent years, but they have also featured fundamental changes. For example, societal and environmental pressures have increased. As a consequence of these pressures, corporate social responsibility has gradually been introduced also in the ports sector. One of the impacts is at the level and type of innovation. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the way that corporate social responsibility emerges among company goals in seaports and the extent to which innovation initiatives respond to the goals raised. Design/methodology/approach To reach its objective, the paper applies a two-step approach. Starting from scientific literature, it drafts an initial set of port-related company goals. This list is validated through a Delphi approach. In a second step, the paper applies a scoring of how port innovation initiatives respond to the raised goals. Furthermore, it determines the degree of homogeneity of both the objective scoring and the innovation scoring, and those two are then compared. Findings The paper derives how relevant a specific innovation action is to a specific company goal, and to which extent it actually contributes to achieving the goal. The most relevant objectives turn out to be turnover and CO2 emissions. It furthermore seems that the social objectives are best achieved. Best achievable seem the “dangerous goods” and “training”. Practical implications The results give insight into which socially important objectives need public support, and which initiatives are to be stimulated. Originality/value The results allow making an initial typology of actions and conditions that contribute to innovation “success”.

As pressure increases for training to justify itself as an activity with a return on investment (ROI), it needs to align its activities with the strategic objectives of the organization. More importantly, it must position itself in the minds of the organization’s decision makers as a necessary component in the strategic-planning process. In most instances, training is seen as an on-call resource, basically given marching orders after the strategic direction is set. It might occupy a similar position in the process as the purchasing department—that is to say, none. After the strategic plan is set, orders for training are placed with the training function to be filled and delivered as ordered. This article looks at the issue of training, specifically distance training and education (DT&E), as a factor in the business unit’s strategic-planning process. The training function’s historical place in the typical organization will be reviewed briefly, as well as a few of the unique dynamics introduced by the emergence of DT&E. To provide adequate background, a discussion of the strategic-planning process will be presented. Included will be a review of factors contributing to effective strategic planning that moves an organization forward. Additionally, common pitfalls of strategic planning will be discussed. The discussion will then move to training’s role in strategic planning or, too often, the lack of training’s role. The article concludes with a specific look at how distance training and learning is being addressed in the strategic-planning process.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to adopt an agency theory approach to investigate the integration of environmental issues into management control systems (MCS). Prior environmental accounting research has focussed on increasing organisations’ environmental accountability by “monitoring” through external reporting to stakeholders. However, this overlooks the alignment of agents’ interests within the firm. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative case study is undertaken in a large Australian listed property trust to investigate how agents’ interests may be integrated with environmental objectives through the use of MCS. Findings From the case an analytical framework is developed to illustrate how environmental issues are incorporated into organisational behaviour through MCS. The findings include, single objective environmental MCS; multiple objective MCS, which include priorities that specify environmental and economic trade-offs; and balancing MCS, which provide overarching decision-making principles without priorities. Practical implications The findings provide examples of how an organisation may integrate environmental issues across a range of MCS and the things to consider in doing so. Originality/value This paper draws on an agency perspective as an approach to incorporate environmental issues into MCS and to align behaviour. It explains a new way in which tensions can be managed. This study is one of the first to adopt the control package approach in investigating the incorporation of environmental issues in MCS.

ABSTRACTIntroduction: The role of communication in an organizational management has become extremely important in the process of change and to achieve better results. The dissemination of information became easier by sharing the knowledge, which is strategic to achieve common goals. In order to investigate the lack of adherence of professionals to the institutional communication media and to propose improvements in this process, to contribute the alignment of different teams to the strategic challenges and projects of the institution, the research was proposed. Objective: Analyze and propose improvements in the institutional communication using the Design Thinking approach. Methods: As an approach, Design Thinking has the ability to combine empathy with the context of the problem, putting the people at the center of the project development. The approach has creativity to create solutions and reason to analyze and adapt solutions to the context. To identify employees pains and gains about institutional communication and the dissemination of the hospital’s strategic planning and to propose improvements, the following steps were developed: immersion (monitoring and interview with employees), ideation (brainstorming with professionals from different areas of the hospital and defining the improvement strategy) and prototyping (strategy validation with employees). Results: About the institutional communication, the following pains were identified: no time in work routine for upgrades; many e-mails; emails that aren’t from your area/sector; uninteresting and unattractive information; ineffective verbal communication; few meetings about institutional subjects. And the following gains: would like to participate more in discussions and strategies; individualized and personalized information; more personal interaction; feel more valued; have traceability of information; fast, simple and objective information. The improvement proposal is the insertion of interactive panels in the hospital sectors with the main deliverables of strategic planning and its goals. It’s a product that uses gamefication to help and improve the communication process. Conclusion: The project provided knowledge about the employees experience with the internal communication and how this failure impairs the understanding about main organization strategic objectives and consequently the difficulty to achieve goals, because teams don’t understand the strategic planning and their products. The Design Thinking approach was a very appropriate tool for this project, because it enabled to develop the empathy with these employees and, from this, to develop an improvement proposal for the main pains and gains of the communication process and to disseminate a strategic planning.  Keywords: Hospital Administration; Communication; Innovation; Strategic Planning.
