Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have strategic roles in economic structure, especially in developing countries, so, they need supports from the banking industry, including foreign banks, by giving loans they need. This study aims to find the effect of bank ownership and mode of entry on credit allocation to MSMEs. We use 110 samples of conventional commercial banks and 41 samples of foreign-owned banks in Indonesia during 2010-2017, with 686 and 266 observations. The results of multiple regression show that banks with government ownership have higher credit allocation to MSMEs than non-government ownership and banks with foreign ownership have lower credit allocation to MSMEs than domestic ownership. Based on their mode of entry, banks with foreign ownership via greenfield have lower credit allocation to MSMEs than via takeover.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate small and medium enterprises’ (SMEs) owner–managers’ awareness, willingness and perceptions concerning Islamic financing instruments as an alternative sourcing decision in SMEs’ businesses. Design/methodology/approach The research employed mixed methods to gather data. A questionnaire survey was conducted via face-to-face interviews with 385 SME owner–managers operating in Muscat, Oman’s capital city, along with face-to-face discussion on Islamic finance with 86 SME owner–managers. Descriptive and thematic analysis were used to analyse the data. Findings The findings indicate that SME owner–managers are aware of Islamic banking principles and have knowledge of Islamic financial instruments, despite Islamic finance being new to Oman. Interestingly, although the majority of the participants indicated their intention to adopt this new finance method, they were motivated by special requirements other than finance. Their positive perception of Islamic financing methods could play a significant role in developing the Islamic banking industry. Research limitations/implications The research is limited in that its data came only from Omani SME owner–managers in Muscat. Future research could investigate wider samples. Secondly, the study’s findings lack generalisability to larger and public enterprises, because only SME owner–managers were surveyed. Practical implications This study will be important for policy makers concerned about SMEs’ financing, Islamic financial institutions and new entrants into the Islamic banking industry, as it provides empirically evidence of Omanis’ views, and more specifically those of Omani SME owner–managers, on the recent introduction of Islamic finance into the country. The insights this study offers should help them to develop the strategies required to attract SMEs and to construct policies and regulations to improve Oman’s Islamic banking industry. Originality/value The research is significant, as it is the first study to investigate the awareness, willingness and perceptions of Omani SMEs regarding Islamic banking in Oman. Even though all Omanis are Muslims, Oman was the last of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council countries to introduce Islamic finance. Thus, this emerging market provides an important basis from which to extend future research on Islamic finance to other potential Islamic finance markets.

Micro, Small and Medium sector (MSME) is the most dynamic sector due to its capacity for innovation, competence for advancements and perseverance to face multiple challenges. Though this sector contributes 8 per cent to GDP, 45 per cent towards manufacturing output and 40 per cent of exports. Still, they lack support to grow exponentially. Understanding the lending pattern of the banks and the perception of commercial banks towards MSME lending is essential not only for academic knowledge but also could necessitate policy changes. The objective of the research is to understand the lending pattern of banks to SMEs and the perception of commercial banks towards SME lending. The researcher used both primary and secondary data. Statistical tools ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis tests are used to analyze the collected data. The results indicate that there is no significant difference in the lending pattern of public sector banks, Private sector banks and foreign banks and the bank staff have a similar level of perception on difficulties in lending to SMEs, perception on the rejection of loan, perception on reluctance to serve SME sector, perception on loan default and factors affecting credit decisions irrespective of the type of the bank and experience in SME lending.

Abstract Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has a relatively low level of entrepreneurial activity as evidenced by GEM reports but also has an economic structure in which SMEs account for about 99% of the total number of enterprises. The goal of this paper was to examine the level of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and influence of EO on business performances of SMEs in the Republic of Srpska (RS), one of the two BiH entities, in which the empirical research was done. We have used adapted Covin & Slevin (1989) version of the questionnaire. We found out that only 12.28% of sampled SMEs have all three dimensions of EO pronounced. The least pronounced dimension is risk-taking and the most pronounced dimension is proactiveness. Our research did not confirm the impact of EO on selected indicators of business performances.

The objective of this article is to determine the effects of foreign ownership and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) on debt maturity in Chilean companies. The study uses a fractional response model (FRM) on 20,586 companies. The results show foreign ownership has a negative and non-linear effect. Foreign ownership in Chilean firms is a substitute control means in relation to long-term debt. IFRS reduces maturity in large companies and extends them in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). These results suggest it is more important for large firms to control agency conflicts, while it is more important for SMEs to reduce information asymmetry.
