Based on this background, the authors are interested in examining more deeply with research questions, namely why book authors tend to take source culture as material and what are real examples of cultural values reflected in textbooks. The research method used in this study is a qualitative research method with the type of library research. Thus the data collection method used is observation. Observations were made on three journals that have been selected as data for analysis, namely analysis of the cultural content of third grade English textbooks in Cianjur, West Java, Cultural content in Indonesian case English teaching textbooks (ELT), Analysis of cultural content in Pathway textbooks. to English for the second grade of high school. The theory used as an analytical knife is the theory of Cortazzi and Jin (1999) which examines culture. The results of the analysis show that there is a tendency for the authors to choose local culture as a teaching material, as evidenced by 13.11% in Faris journal, 45% in Kurnia journal and 19% in Nurjannah journal who choose source culture as teaching material. The reason the author chooses source culture as source material is because the material is easily understood by the participants of the source culture, the source culture is easily found in real terms, the delivery of the source culture can help preserve the culture itself so that it does not become extinct, the source culture material can broaden students' horizons because of its diversity in Indonesia.Source cultural materials can indirectly foster nature and mutual respect for cultural differences between one another.

One of the most important components in teaching-learning activities is textbooks. The author of the textbook must tailor it to the cognitive development of children at a given age. Semiotics is one of the factors that can be examined in a textbook since the illustration of semiotics is a particular feature that substantially influences children's visual perception. The purpose of this research is to examine Semiotics in Elementary School English textbooks. This study applied qualitative research in terms of library research to collect the data from the students' English textbooks in the second-grade Elementary school. Semiotic analysis based on Pierce's semiotic theory, namely representamen (signifier), object (referent), and interpretant, was used to analyze the data (signified). Because the activities contain symbols, pictures, and signs that are extremely engaging for the second-grade students of Elementary school at SDIT Al-Hijrah 2, this study concluded that this book is very suited for learning for the second-grade students of Elementary school at SDIT Al-Hijrah 2. This study tries to explore the link between communication and Islamic culture in Indonesia. To see the linkages, the authors used research with a library research method which focused three issues, namely first, the relationship between communication and culture; second, the relationship between culture and religion; and thirdly, the institutionalization of Islamic cultural values in Indonesia. The results of the study turned out that communication and culture are two things that are inseparable. If we talk about communication then we also talk about culture. Religion and culture are closely related and complementary such as the influence of Islam on culture and cultural influence on Islam. Therefore we know the term "Islamization of culture and the teaching of Islam". Institutionalization of Islamic values is very strong in shaping the system of knowledge and intellectuality of society, belief system, national culture, economic system and the formation of the behavior of Muslims in Indonesia. In short, Islamic values have been rooted in Indonesia national culture.

Ideologies are contested through discourses; thus, textbooks can be a fertile ground for implanting the prevalence of women's marginalization in society, or they can also be used for deconstructing the ideology. The present study aims to provide a general map of how English as a foreign language reflects gendered stereotypes. The study was library research that used the results of previous studies to answer the research questions. Using George's method, the study chose thirty articles published in 2010 - 2021, then critically reviewed. The critical reading was continued with mapping the results of the studies, and their arguments on gender stereotypes included English as Foreign Language textbooks worldwide. The review revealed that there had been prevalent marginalization of women in English textbooks reflected through the depiction of women as less dominant, inferior than men, primarily domestic, generally weak, powerless, voiceless, and passive. Such male prevalence was also found in Indonesian EFL textbooks. Many previous studies admit that male prevalence and women marginalization in EFL textbooks reflect reality in society. Nevertheless, the present study takes the standpoint that calls for the utilization of textbooks to deconstruct gendered binary oppositions that marginalize women by deliberately designing textbooks that impart awareness about gender equity.

Purpose The purpose of this systematic review was to determine evidence of a cognate effect for young multilingual children (ages 3;0–8;11 [years;months], preschool to second grade) in terms of task-level and child-level factors that may influence cognate performance. Cognates are pairs of vocabulary words that share meaning with similar phonology and/or orthography in more than one language, such as rose – rosa (English–Spanish) or carrot – carotte (English–French). Despite the cognate advantage noted with older bilingual children and bilingual adults, there has been no systematic examination of the cognate research in young multilingual children. Method We conducted searches of multiple electronic databases and hand-searched article bibliographies for studies that examined young multilingual children's performance with cognates based on study inclusion criteria aligned to the research questions. Results The review yielded 16 articles. The majority of the studies (12/16, 75%) demonstrated a positive cognate effect for young multilingual children (measured in higher accuracy, faster reaction times, and doublet translation equivalents on cognates as compared to noncognates). However, not all bilingual children demonstrated a cognate effect. Both task-level factors (cognate definition, type of cognate task, word characteristics) and child-level factors (level of bilingualism, age) appear to influence young bilingual children's performance on cognates. Conclusions Contrary to early 1990s research, current researchers suggest that even young multilingual children may demonstrate sensitivity to cognate vocabulary words. Given the limits in study quality, more high-quality research is needed, particularly to address test validity in cognate assessments, to develop appropriate cognate definitions for children, and to refine word-level features. Only one study included a brief instruction prior to assessment, warranting cognate treatment studies as an area of future need. Supplemental Material https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.12753179
