Several points made by Millet and Asher in 1983 ate addressed. For instance, the probable effects of collinearity and suppression are discussed. The authors are confident that their original conclusions will be supported by subsequent research.

In our original article (this issue, p. ♦♦♦), we argued that focusing research on individual symptoms of psychopathology might provide valuable information about their underlying nature and result in better classification systems, explanations, and treatment. To this end, we formulated five core questions that were intended to guide subsequent research and symptom conceptualizations in the psychopathology domain. In this article, we respond to two commentaries on our article. We conclude that it is time to open the black box of symptoms and to take seriously their status as complex constructs.

SYNOPSISJanis (1958) has proposed a curvilinear relationship between pre-operative anxiety and post-operative emotional state. While other hypotheses share the prediction of a poor outcome for patients with pre-operative high anxiety, Janis' theory is unique in predicting a poor outcome for those with low anxiety. Subsequent research has failed to confirm Janis' hypotheses, perhaps because the designs have been insensitive to the predictions for low anxiety patients. The current study tests the hypothesis more directly and finds some support for a linear relationship between pre-operative anxiety and post-operative negative affect, with no support for Janis' curvilinear hypothesis. On the whole, pre-operative anxiety was a poor predictor of other measures of recovery but, on one measure, patients with low anxiety showed a slower recovery than those with moderate anxiety, i.e. supporting the prediction of a poor outcome for low anxiety patients. The implications of these results for pre-operative preparation of surgical patients and the development of theories of anxiety are discussed.

Abstract The translation policy model by González Núñez (2013, 475) comprises three elements, namely “translation management”, “translation practices”, and “translation beliefs”. While the first two elements of this model are straightforward and easy to study in top-down approaches, translation beliefs can relate both to policymakers and policy receivers. However, the distinction has not been clearly made in this model and the element of translation beliefs has been chiefly treated in the literature as though it comes from the top levels of policymaking, hence overlooking the bottom-up aspects of it (see González Núñez 2014, 2016; Li et al. 2017). In order to improve this model, the present paper draws on the audience reception theory (Hall 1973), and shows that the current translation policy model requires a fourth element that I would call ‘translation reception’. The paper draws on the findings of a reception-oriented case study on translation policies in provincial broadcasting in Iran. This study argues that a more inclusive model of translation policy should not only include the authority-level elements of translation management, translation practices, and translation beliefs, but also the element of translation reception on the part of policy receivers. This way, I hope, the end users’ involvement in and contribution to the translation policy network will not be overlooked in subsequent research.

AbstractIn this paper, we study “the ring of component functions” of SL(2, C)-representations of free abelian groups. This is a subsequent research of our previous work [11] for free groups. We introduce some descending filtration of the ring, and determine the structure of its graded quotients. Then we give two applications. In [30], we constructed the generalized Johnson homomorphisms. We give an upper bound on their images with the graded quotients. The other application is to construct a certain crossed homomorphisms of the automorphism groups of free groups. We show that our crossed homomorphism induces Morita's 1-cocycle defined in [22]. In other words, we give another construction of Morita's 1-cocyle with the SL(2, C)-representations of the free abelian group.

Abstract The main aim of this article is to critically analyse and systematise the debate concerning non-professional subtitling of TV series and movies in some non-English-speaking countries. Most of the studies on fansubbing deal with a specific problem, and they are based on various theoretical frameworks. This paper attempts to merge them into one coherent framework that can serve as a basis for subsequent research. The article addresses the issue of non-professional translation as a solution to the lack of official translations, but also as an alternative strategy for translating the texts of popular culture. The paper is divided into four parts. The first defines the phenomenon of fansubbing. The second shows how professional and non-professional translations differ. The following two parts, based on different national case studies, answer the questions: who are fansubbers, and what are their motivations?

In this article, Linda Eisenmann examines the role and impact of Barbara Solomon's now classic text in women's educational history, In the Company of Educated Women: A History of Women and Higher Education in America. Eisenmann analyzes how Solomon's book influenced, defined, and in some ways limited the field of women's educational history. She shows how current historical research — such as the study of normal schools and academies — grew out of Solomon's work. She points out where the book is innovative and indispensable and where it disappoints us as teachers and scholars in the 1990s. Eisenmann criticizes Solomon for placing too much emphasis on women's access to higher education, thereby ignoring the importance of wider historical and educational influences such as economics, women's occupational choices, and the treatment of women in society at large. Finally, Eisenmann examines the state of subsequent research in women's higher educational history. She urges researchers to investigate beyond the areas defined by Solomon's work and to assess the impact of these neglected subjects on women's experiences in education.

The scientific interest in Commission 31 topics and their applicability to new and practical fields is exponentially growing, pushing towards the recognition of new problems and subsequent research. In some cases as in Primary Standards the state of the art seems to be rather close to the actual and imagined needs. In other cases as in worldwide precise and accurate synchronization, we have to recognize that we still are far from the goals.

An election period involves a substantial growth in the flow of messages addressed to voters. News PR publications constitute a significant share of these messages; they have a number of structural and content features whose description with a comprehensive approach using linguo-stylistic and discursive textual analysis seems necessary to assess the political discourse’s impact potential. Pre-election PR publications modeling messages within non-direct communication include a dyadic sense-bearing structure evidenced by the presence of two main thoughts and two analytical estimates of the presented situations in the text’s logical pattern, corresponding to two addresser’s intentions – the explicit and the implicit one. Explicit elements have to do with the presentation of the publication’s newsworthy event; the implicit ones create a favorable image of the basic PR subject and contain recommendations of electoral nature. Such dual construction of media text’s sense-bearing structure is considered to be defective in the practice of literary editing but it is a certain pragmatic norm for political pre-election PR texts. Another feature of the abovementioned materials’ sense-bearing structure is the semantic uncertainty of a number of components and/or uncertainty of the logical links between them. Abandoning H. P. Grice’s premises – producing implicit meanings and semantically uncertain elements – has the purpose of creating an impacting effect whose assessment determines the prospects of subsequent research of news PR texts within the pre-election discourse.

Abstract OBJECTIVE To determine the evidence with regards to self-care outcomes and interventions for children who have been treated for a brain tumour and identify when best to intervene. METHODS A scoping review of the literature with regards to self-care interventions, outcomes and mechanisms was undertaken. The information from these themes were populated onto a logic model alongside the clinical expertise of the team. The logic model was used to develop hypotheses to inform subsequent research; and identified areas for further patient and public involvement. RESULTS Of 27 papers found, 13 were deemed relevant. The literature suggested the diagnosis of a brain tumour can have a long-term negative impact on self-care outcomes whilst evidence with regards to interventions to promote self-care is scarce. The child’s physical and cognitive functions were identified as hypothesised factors influencing self-care, while health related quality of life and participation in other life domains were secondary consequences of self-care. The team expertise was further used to hypothesise that parent factors (emotions, identity, actions), the child’s emotional functions and personal factors as well as peer relationships and norms may influence children’s self-care. These factors were not covered in the existing literature. CONCLUSIONS Subsequent research will investigate the hypotheses developed to further specify factors that self-care interventions for children and young people with a brain tumour should target. This will involve specifying when, how and to whom interventions should be targeted.

The development of research in the annotation area is growing. Researchers perform annotation task using various forms of datasets such as text, sound, images, and videos. Various algorithms are used to perform tasks. The purpose of this survey is to find out algorithms that are often used by researchers to perform annotation tasks, especially on text data. The literature surveys thirteen research papers on text annotation from the last 5 years. The results of this review indicate that SVM is the algorithm used for all three annotation methods: manual, automatic and semi-automatic annotation, with a significant accuracy above 80%. The result of this survey will be referred by the authors as the basis for subsequent research that will be conducted, especially in the semi-automatic annotation method.
