AbstractAcalypha wilkesiana is a tropical herb used for the treatment of skin disorders. Phytochemical studies carried out on the pulverized dried leaves of the plant revealed the presence of alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, anthraquinones, saponins, flavonoids and tannins. The crude 50% methanol extract obtained from the dried leaves was sequentially partitioned into three fractions. Thin layer chromatography of the fractions revealed three (3) components each in hexane fraction; ethyl acetate fraction and butanol fraction of the plant extract. Column chromatography of the fractions was carried out. The infrared analyses of the components revealed the presence of alkenes, hydroxyl group, conjugate carbonyls, esters in the hexane fraction components. Those from the ethyl acetate and butanol fractions contained aliphatic amides or amines with carbonyl and esters attached in the two fractions. Essential oil was extracted from the dried leaves using hydro-distillation method. GC-MS analysis of the essential oil revealed the presence of major compounds which included: n-Hexadecanoic acid 4-Hexen-2-one-3-methyl, Pyrrole and 6-Benzamido-4-benzoyl-1,2,4-triazine-3,5. The presence of the functional groups inferred from IR and GC-MS analyses with the antimicrobial potential of the essential oil may support the use of the plant in the management of skin infections, gastrointestinal disorders and other ailments.

Background: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing on a global trend. The aim of the present study is to identify the most effective antioxidants and hypoglycemic fraction of Azanza garckeana. Methods: The fractions (nhexane or ethyl-acetate or aqueous) of A. garckeana were administered to the alloxan-induced diabetic rats at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg for 15 days. Antioxidants activities were evaluated at concentrations of 62.5, 125, 250, and 500 µg/mL using the DPPH scavenging assay. Results: Results revealed that both the hexane, ethyl-acetate, and aqueous fractions exhibited hypoglycemic and antioxidants activities in a dose-dependent manner. The n-hexane fraction demonstrated highest percentage DPPH scavenging effect of 26.34±3.43, 38.44±4.35, 59.34±3.45, and 74.83±5.35 at 62.5, 125, 250, and 500 µg/mL respectively. The ethyl-acetate fraction demonstrated 19.33±2.98, 28.94±3.24, 47.34±2.90, and 57.82±4.54 respectively while the aqueous fraction exhibited the least activities of 12.45±23.45, 18.64±2.94, 27.94±3.89, and 39.43±3.89 at concentrations of 62.5, 125, 250, and 500 µg/mL respectively. In addition, the n-hexane fraction demonstrated the most significant hypoglycemic effect with the highest glucose reduction of 58.97 ±3.45 %, 63.86±5.35 %, and 66.51±4.35 %, ethyl acetate fraction demonstrated glucose reduction of 7.55±0.54%, 21.77±2.35 %, and 29.56±3.46 % while the aqueous fraction demonstrated the least hypoglycemic effect of 9.89±2.67 %, 18.09±3.45 %, and 18.87±3.24 at 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg bw respectively. Conclusion: The n-hexane fraction of Azanza garckeana extract could serve as a reservoir of bioactive agents that could be useful for the development of a new anti-diabetic agent

Antioxidants can prevent free radical formation. Natural antioxidants found in many plants, such as <em>Ficus benjamina </em>and <em>Annona reticulata</em>. The study aimed to compare the antioxidant activity of extracts and fractions of <em>Ficus benjamina </em>and <em>Annona reticulata</em> leaves against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrilhydrazyl. The steps of this study consist of extraction, fractionation with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water, phytochemical screening, antioxidant activity determination, and comparing the IC<sub>50</sub> values. Percentage scavenging activity of the extracts and fractions against DPPH was calculated to determine the antioxidant activity. The IC<sub>50</sub> value of <em>Ficus benjamina </em>was 127.86 ppm for ethanolic extract, 94.01 ppm for water fraction, 115.48 ppm for ethyl acetate fraction, and 335.50 ppm for n-hexane fraction. The IC<sub>50</sub> value of <em>Annona reticulata</em> was 274.31 ppm for ethanolic extract, 211.42 ppm for water fraction, 367.91 ppm for ethyl acetate fraction, and 741.08 ppm for n-hexane fraction. The results showed that the <em>Ficus benjamina</em> water fraction was the best antioxidant compared to other extract and fraction.

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate antioxidant activity and phytochemical screening of ethanol extract, fractions of water, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane from mistletoe tea (Scurrula atropurpurea Bl. Dans).Methods: Simplicia extracted using soxhlet equipment with 96% ethanol. Fractionation was conducted using liquid-liquid extraction using a solvent of water, ethyl acetate and n-hexane. Screening of phytochemical and antioxidant activity was performed against these fractions. Antioxidant activity was determined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl method using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry with ascorbic acid as standard. Phytochemical screening was conducted based on the method of Farnsworth.Results: The IC50 values of ethanol extract, water fraction, fraction of ethyl acetate, and n-hexane fraction were 21.92 ppm, 89.57 ppm, 14.08 ppm, and 162.09 ppm, respectively, whereas for ascorbic acid was 4.41 ppm. The ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction contained compounds were the same group, polyphenolic, tannins, flavonoids, monoterpenoid, steroids, triterpenoids, and quinones. Fraction of water contained compounds such as polyphenolic group, flavonoids, monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, steroids, and triterpenoids. n-hexane fraction compounds contained steroids and triterpenoids.Conclusion: The ethanol extract, water fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and n-hexane fraction showed antioxidant activities. The ethanol extract, fractions of water, and ethyl acetate fraction contained flavonoids and polyphenolic potential as antioxidants.Keywords: Mistletoe tea, Scurrula atropurpurea, Antioxidant, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, Ascorbic acid.

ABSTRACTObjective: Rheumatoid arthritis is chronic inflammation disorder that can be treated with anti-inflammatory drug such as methylprednisolone.Several medicinal plants shave the potential to be used in arthritis therapy, one of which is Muntingia calabura L. The objective of this research wasto study the antirheumatic activity of M. calabura leaves ethanol extract and its n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water fractions in a rheumatoid arthriticrat model.Methods: Rheumatoid was induced in rats by intraplantar injection of Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA) into the right foot paw of Wistar rats. Thepaw volume was measured by a plethysmometer. The histology of right foot paw was carried out. For chronic CFA inflammation, induced paw edemaassay was used, whereas chronic inflammation was assessed by CFA induced arthritis. The histopathology of synovial joints (paw) was carried out.Result: The results of the study revealed that in CFA-induced arthritic rats, methylprednisolone, M. calabura ethanol extract, and its fractions wereable to reduce inflammation. Histopathology examination also showed a reduction of in cartilage destruction, influx of inflammatory cells, pannusformation, fibrin deposition, and synovitis.Conclusion: M. calabura L. n-hexane fraction showed a better anti-rheumatic activity in rats among other fractions.Keywords: Muntingia calabura L. leaves, Ethanol extract, N-hexane fraction, Ethyl acetate fraction, Antirheumatic.

<p>The <em>Aedes aegypti</em> mosquito can develop an immune system against the insecticide used. Control efforts with the use of insecticides are no longer effective if the target insects have become resistant. So there needs to be an effort to overcome the insect resistance that is targeted. Citronella grass is an herbal plant that can be used as an ingredient in vegetable pesticides. The leaves and stems are distilled to produce essential oil known as citronella oil. This research is about studying the effects of citronella oil against the resistance of the vector carrier for dengue fever, namely <em>Aedes aegypti. </em>The detection of citronella essential oil (<em>Cymbopogon nardus</em> L.) by Thin Layer Chromatography showed a reduction in UV<sub>254</sub> visualization (Rf 0,68). The resistance test showed that the mortality percentage of adult mosquitoes <em>Aedes aegypti</em> exposed to 0.03% alphacymethrin was 73,7% resistant criteria (&lt;90%). The mortality percentage of adult mosquitoes <em>Aedes aegypti</em> exposed to Alphacypermethrin (0,03%) and citronella oil was 2,5% each; 5%; 7,5% and 10% with treatment time 15 respectively, namely 18,7%, 50,7%, 70,7% and 82,7%; the treatment time of 30 minutes consecutively is 62,7%, 89,3%, 96% and 97,3% and the treatment time is 60 minutes respectively, namely 93,3%, 98,7%, 98,7% and 100%. There was an increase in the percentage of mosquito deaths exposed to the combination of alphacypermethrin and citronella oil, compared to those without citronella oil, this indicates that mosquitoes are more susceptible and resistance has decreased due to exposure to citronella oil. <strong></strong></p>

This study aims to determine the level of antioxidant activity of Sikkam bark extract (Bischofia javanica Blume) and its potential as an anticancer agent. This research was conducted in November 2018 - April 2019 in the Laboratory of Chemical Education Guidance and Counseling and Basic Science Laboratory, University of Bengkulu. The sample in this study was obtained from Gunung Mariah village in Simalungun district, North Sumatra. The method used in this study was extraction using maceration, liquid-liquid fractionation, phytochemical test, DPPH (Diphenylpicrylhiydrazyl) test and BSLT test (Brine Shrimp Lethality Test). Extraction maceration using ethanol 96%, fractionation using a solvent n-hexane and ethyl acetate, phytochemical tests using Mayer's reagent, Lieberman-Burchard, FeCl3 1% and H2SO4 2N, antioxidant test using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and cytotoxic tests using shrimp Artemia salina Leach larvae. The results of the study on maceration of 800 grams of Sikkam bark obtained a crude extract of 53.6 grams (6.7%). Fractionation from 10 grams of crude extract obtained 7.24 gram ethanol fraction (72.4%), ethyl acetate fraction 2.14 gram (21.4%) and n-Hexane fraction 0.39 gram (3.9%). Phytochemical test results obtained the content of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins and terpenoids with the highest yield on tannin compounds. The antioxidant activity test results obtained IC50 values in crude extracts of 20.94 ppm, ethanol fraction 36.29 ppm, ethyl acetate fraction 83.28 ppm and n-Hexane fraction 39.13 ppm which showed that crude extract, ethanol fraction, n-Hexane fraction were categorized as very strong antioxidants and Ethyl acetate fraction is categorized as a strong antioxidant. The cytotoxic test results using crude extract obtained an LC50 value of 54,827 ppm which showed that Sikkam bark extract was toxic so that it was potential as an anticancer agent.

Background: Micro-organisms are responsible for the transmission of a large number of diseases. It is hard to comprehend the amount of diseases, deaths and economic losses caused by micro-organisms alone. Plants are good sources of eco-friendly and readily available antimicrobial agents. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical constituents and antimicrobial characteristics of three fractions from ethnomedicinal Icacina trichantha. Oliv. (Icacinaceae).Methods: Methanol extract from Icacina trichantha. Oliv was obtained by maceration and fractionated successively using hexane, and ethyl acetate. The antimicrobial properties of Icacina trichantha. Oliv was assessed using agar cup diffusion method on MRSA, P. aeruginosa, S. typhi, C. krusei, S. dysenteriae, S. pyrogenes, E. coli, K. pneumoniae, C. albicans, and C. tropicalis. Phytochemical screening on fractions was also evaluated using standard methods.Results: Phytochemical screening on fractions revealed the presence of saponins, alkaloids, steroids, tannins, and glycosides. Agar diffusion assay on fractions showed growth inhibitory effect on all the organisms except P. aeruginosa, S. typhi, and C. tropicalis. The MIC revealed that n-hexane fraction was active against MRSA, S. pyrogenes, E. coli, K. pneumonia, C. albicans and C. krusei at 10 mg/mL while S. dysenteriae was active at 5 mg/mL. The ethyl acetate fraction was active against all the organisms at a concentration of 5 mg/mL except P.aeruginosa, S.typhi and C.tropicalis. Methanol fraction showed activity of 5 mg/mL against MRSA, S. pyrogenes, E. coli, S. dysenteriae, C. albicans and C. krusei except for K. pneumoniae with activity at 10 mg/mL. Minimum bactericidal concentration/fungicidal concentration MBC/MFC evaluated on the n-hexane fraction revealed that MRSA, S. pyrogenes, E. coli, K. pneumoniae, S. dysenteriae, C. albicans, and C. krusei were activeat 20 mg/mL, while the ethyl acetate fraction had MBC/MFC of 10 mg/mL against all the organisms except P. aeruginosa, S. typhi, C. tropicalis. Methanol extract had MBC/MFC of 10 mg/mL against MSRA, E.coli and S. dysenteriae whereas S. pyrogenes, K. pneumoniae, C. albicans and C. krusei had MBC/MFC at 20 mg/mL.Conclusion: Icacina trichantha. Oliv. contain constituents with concentration dependent antimicrobial properties based on type of organism. The plant could be useful in the prevention and treatment of multi-resistant disease causing microorganisms.

Acne is an inflammatory disease that occurs in the skin triggered by the bacteria acne treatment can be done by using natural materials that shiitake mushrooms (Lentinus edodes). This aims of this study were to determining the antibacterial activity of extracts and fractions shiitake mushrooms with broth microdilution method, determining the value of equality shiitake mushrooms with antibacterial comparison and determining the morphological changes of bacteria after exposure to the test sample with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Tests conducted antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus at concentrations used is 1 ppm, 2 ppm, 4 ppm, 8 ppm, 16 ppm, 32 ppm, 64 ppm, 128 ppm, 256 ppm, 512 ppm. Best MIC value obtained in fraction of ethyl acetate and n-hexane fraction of the bacterium Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus at a concentration of 256 ppm. KBM value of the n-hexane fraction against Staphylococus aureus bacteria at concentrations of 512 ppm and ethyl acetate fraction against bacteria Staphylococus aureus and epidermidis at a concentration of 512 ppm. Value equality is obtained 1 mg of ethyl acetate fraction of shiitake mushrooms equivalent to 5.346 x 10-2 mg of tetracycline. SEM test results showed the presence of antibacterial activity which is indicated by a change in cell morphology, their lumps and their cell wall frown on Propionibacterium acnes were exposed to ethyl acetate fraction.Key words: Acne, Lentinus edodes, antibacterials, microdilution, SEM

 Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the antioxidant activity of Tarenna polycarpa (Miq.) koord. Ex Valenton. Leaf extract and fractions.Methods: Antioxidant activity was examined by DPPH method.Results: Ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction, and ethyl acetate fraction with DPPH assay measured as half maximal inhibitory concentration were 55.21, 109.73, and 42.04 μg/mL, respectively.Conclusions: The results reveal that T. polycarpa extract and fractions have strong antioxidant potential. Our further study is to isolate compounds responsible for antioxidant components.
