Abstract The construction industry consumes a large quantity of cement, which therefore leads to a high CO2 emission due to the cement manufacture. The partial replacement of cement by supplementary cementations materials (SCMs) is considered as the most promising alternative to reduce the environmental impact of this industry. This investigation aims to evaluate the performance of calcinated clay (calcined bentonite at 850 °C) used as partial replacement of cement in cement-based mortar. The evaluated performances include the physico-chemical and mechanical properties, as well as microstructural characteristics.. Various characterization tests, including laser granulometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) have been investigated. In addition, the hardened properties of different mortar mixtures were also investigated. Mortar mixtures incorporating different calcinated clay percentages corresponding to 8, 10, 12, and 14%, by mass of total binder content, were proportioned. Termogravimetric analysis (TGA) and its derivative (DTG), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and microstructural (Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)) analysis were carried out on samples of mortar mixtures. Furthermore, the 28-d hardened properties were assessed to assess the pozzolanic activity of the investigated mixtures. Strength activity index (SAI), DSC, and TGA analyzes are presented. The obtained results showed that all the mixtures exhibited adequate pozzolanic activity conforming to the ASTM C618 specifications.

This work investigated the properties of scoria and pumice as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) for Portland cement and compared to those of rice husk ash (RHA). X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and pozzolanic activity index (PAI) tests confirmed the suitability of these two materials as potential SCMs. Scoria and RHA samples achieved over 75% PAI at 7 days whereas pumice did this after 28 days. Initial and final mean setting times observed for the composite cement blended with these materials were 166 and 285 min, respectively. These setting times are longer than that of ordinary Portland cement but shorter compared to that of common Portland pozzolana cement. The ultimate mean compressive strengths achieved at 28 days of curing were 42.5, 44.8, and 43.0 MPa for scoria, pumice, and RHA, respectively, signifying that these materials are good SCMs. Higher fineness yielded higher ultimate mean strength. For instance, a scoria sample with a fineness of 575 m2/kg achieved the strength of 52.2 MPa after 28 days.

This research investigated the possibility of using metallurgical slags from the copper and lead industries as partial replacement for cement. The studied slags were fayalitic, having a mainly ferro-silicate composition with minor contents of Al2O3 and CaO. The slags were treated at 1200–1300 °C (to reduce the heavy metal content) and then granulated in water to promote the formation of reactive phases. A full hydration study was carried out to assess the kinetics of reactions, the phases formed during hydration, the reactivity of the slags and their strength activity as supplementary cementitious material (SCM). The batch-leaching behaviour of cementitious mixtures incorporating treated slags was also investigated. The results showed that all three slags have satisfactory leaching behaviour and similar performance in terms of reactivity and contribution to the strength development. All slags were found to have mediocre reactivity and contribution to strength, especially at early ages. Nonetheless, they passed the minimum mechanical performance requirements and were found to qualify for use in cement.

Mechanochemical treatment of Serbian kaolin clay was carried out in a planetary ball mill using two different milling media, hardened steel or zirconia vials and balls. The samples obtained with various milling times were characterized by the particle size laser diffraction (PSLD), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetry (DTA/TGA) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analyses. Mechanochemical treatment induced amorphization of the kaolinite phase accompanied by dehydroxylation. It was found that for the given milling parameters, amorphization mainly took place in the milling period up to 15 min, and was completed after about 30 min of milling for both milling media used. The pozzolanic activities were determined by the Chapelle method. Milling in the hardened steel milling medium had no significant influence on pozzolanic activity, even though there was accumulated iron contamination. For both milling media, pozzolanic activity of 0.79 was obtained for the samples milled for 15 min and it remained almost unchanged with prolonged milling. The determined pozzolanic activity values are close to these of commercial metakaolinite or metakaolinite obtained by the calcination of the same clay, therefore, indicating possibility for obtaining high reactive pozzolana by mechanochemical treatment of Serbian kaoline clay.

Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) is a type of Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCM) that is currently being used extensively in the global construction industry. SCMs are cheaper than Portland cement, help to improve certain properties of concrete and also help to reduce the environmental footprint associated with the production of Portland cement. GGBS is readily available in most parts of the world as a waste product from iron and steel production. However, its use as a SCM in some countries has not been fully maximized. This is primarily because of lack of documented studies on the properties of GGBS that influences its suitability as a SCM, especially in tropical environments. This paper reviewed the use of GGBS as a SCM for the partial replacement of Portland cement, with particular emphasis on its potential use in tropical warm environments such as Nigeria and other similar countries.

The incorporation of sustainable materials in the civil construction sector has grown in recent years to minimize environmental impacts. Among these materials, the use of earth, a local raw material that does not require much energy for its processing, appears as an advantageous and promising alternative. Earth mortars stabilized with natural binders, when compared to conventional mortars, can have technological, economic and environmental advantages. The objective of this work was to develop an earth-based mortar stabilized with mineral binders using a 1:3 binder to aggregate mass proportion, and to evaluate its fresh and hardened state properties, as well as its environmental impacts using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with a cradle to gate scope. The selected materials were divided in four groups: (i) cement, hydrated lime, fly ash and metakaolinite (binders), (ii) natural sand and coarse fraction of the earth (aggregates), (iii) calcium chloride and superplasticizer (additives) and (iv) water. In the matrix formulation the clay fraction from earth constituted the majority of the binder. The selection of supplementary cementitious materials as additional binders provided improvements in workability and mechanical properties of the mortar. A mix design was carried out using different cement (5; 7.5 and 10%) and fly ash (11; 13.5 and 16%) mass percentages. The water/binder material ratio, superplasticizer content and calcium chloride content were 0.65; 2% and 1%, respectively. The results showed that an increase in fly ash content combined with a decrease in cement content provided an increase in workability and a decrease in mechanical properties of mortars. Nevertheless, the mechanical performance of the mortars remained above the minimum values prescribed in Brazilian construction codes. From the results analysis it was concluded that partial replacement of cement by fly ash provided greater workability in the fresh state and reduced the environmental impacts of the earth-based mortar.

High-performance concrete is a very specific type of concrete. Its production is sensitive to both the quality of compounds used and the order of addition of particular compounds during the homogenization process. The mechanical properties were observed for four dosing procedures of each of the three tested concrete mixtures. The four dosing procedures were identical for the three mixes. The three mixes varied only in the type of supplementary cementitious material used and in water content. The water content difference was caused by variable k-value of particular additives. The water-to-binder ratio was kept constant for all the concretes. The additives used were metakaolin, fly ash and microsilica. The comparison of particular dosing procedures was carried out on the values of basic mechanical properties of concrete. The paper compares compressive strength and depth of penetration of water under pressure. Besides the comparsion of macro-mechanical properties, the effect of microsilica and fly ash additives on micro-mechanical properties was observed with the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nanoindentation data analysis. Nanoindentation was used to determine the thickness and strength of interfacial transition zone (ITZ) for different sequence of addition of cement, additive and aggregate. The thickness obtained by nanoindentation was further investigated by SEM EDS line scanning.

The life of the concrete is strongly influenced by durability parameters. The permeability is one of the main characteristics influencing the durability of concrete. The concrete is more permeable due to the ingress of water, oxygen, chloride, sulphate, and other potential deleterious substances. The durability of concrete is mainly affected by pore structure system of concrete and addingthe supplementary cementitious materials (SCM), such as fly ash, slag cement, and silica fume can be decrease permeability. Crystalline technology enhances the strength of concrete by filling the poresand micro-cracks with non-dissolvable substances. To study the efficiency of crystalline formation in concrete in terms of more permeable should be guaranteed through a specific technique.The effectiveness of crystalline waterproofing system with partial replacement cement by GGBS is studiedin terms of strength and durability. The performance of the two different types of crystalline waterproofing integral admixtures has been studied for compressive strength, Split tensile strength, workability, water permeability, Rapid chloride permeability test and porosity in this paper.The early strength increased in GGBS with crystalline admixture concretes compare to the control concrete. No significant strength reduction is observed in GGBS concretes with crystalline admixture when replaced with 20% and 40% of cement than control concrete.

The worldwide production of cement is growing every year due to its increased use in the construction. Cement production is affiliated with an environmental concern as it contributes to the CO2 emissions. It is imperative to reduce the cement production by incorporating supplementary cementitious materials in the cement composites. In this research study, wheat straw ash (WSA) was used as an alternate of ordinary Portland cement. The ash was ground separately with a ball mill and a disintegrator mill as well as with a combination of both to enhance its pozzolanic efficiency. Mortar and paste specimens were made by substituting cement with WSA (20% by weight). Ash specimens were examined in terms of particle size distribution, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray fluorescence analyses. The performance of the ash specimens in cement composites was examined via compressive and flexural strengths, and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) tests. Isothermal calorimetric, thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were also employed on the specimens. The results revealed that the particle size of the wheat straw ash specimens significantly reduced and specific surface area enhanced when ground with a combination of both milling techniques. Cement composites made with this type of ash demonstrated improved mechanical and physical properties, accelerated hydration reaction at the early ages, reduce calcium hydroxide content at the later ages, and densified microstructure.

Often, concrete is not mixed or placed under ideal conditions. Particularly in the winter or the summer months, the temperature of fresh concrete is quite different from that of concrete mixed under laboratory conditions. This paper examines the influence of supplementary cementitious materials on the strength development (and other hardened properties) of concrete subjected to different curing regimens. The supplementary cementitious materials used in the research program were ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), fly ash, and a combination of both materials. The three curing regimens used were hot weather curing, standard curing, and cold weather curing. Under the conditions tested, the results show that the addition of GGBFS at a relatively low replacement rate can improve the hardened properties for each curing regimen. This improvement was noticeable not only at later ages but also at early ages. Mixtures that contained both materials (GGBFS and fly ash) performed as well as and, in most cases, better than mixtures that contained only portland cement in all curing regimens.
