Abstract The state of the environment is deteriorating due to human activity. Today, almost no major international forum can avoid addressing environmental issues. Environmental protection has therefore become a mandatory issue for every responsible politician. In addition to contributing to economic growth, the role of road transport should be to ensure sustainable transport and solutions for people and goods around the world. The European Parliament has adopted Directive 2019/1161 on the promotion of environmentally friendly and energy-efficient road transport vehicles, which defines the obligations and forms of support for the procurement of environmentally friendly vehicles. In addition to these transport tasks, there is also a challenge to reduce CO2 emissions in transport through the use of new technologies in transport. Also in road freight transport, there are currently vehicles that use alternative fuels with a more favorable environmental impact. In connection with the current EU legislation, which aims to increase the share of these vehicles, attention is paid to the contribution of this area, analysis and examination of the current situation with trucks with alternative propulsion.

Sustainable development has become a guiding principle of human activities nowadays. Sustainable transport can take a great part in future development. Today this is not the case, and road transport contributes to this above all. For sustainable transport development the necessity of modal shift is inevitable and the inland waterway navigation should get the higher share of the total transport where there is an alternative. This presentation shows the reasons why the inland waterway navigation can increase the level of sustainability.

This research responded to environmental issues that arise related to green design as the responsibility of architectural actors. A building is now required to have environmentally friendly values, one of that can be reflected in the energy efficiency of the building. Kudu Flats is one of the towers in the city of Semarang which had several blocks with different orientations. Related to these environmental issues, this study aimed to determine the level of energy efficiency in the Kudu flats with consideration of building orientation, openings and shading devices using quantitative methods based on edge design. This study revealed that flats blocks that have smaller openings in the east-west direction are more energy efficient and rotating the building orientation 15 ° from the wind direction will make the building more energy efficient.

Abstract This paper analyzes the importance of bimodal solutions in the rail-road transport of goods with an emphasis on the aspect of ecology within the geographical region of EU-28. Using the panel regression analysis in the period from 2010 to 2019, we are trying to confirm the dependence between the road and rail transport of goods by applying several freight units’ measures: the freight transport performance in tonne-kilometres, the freight transport performance in tonne-kilometres per thousand of USD, and the amount of goods transported in thousands of tonnes. The application of data to all selected freight units’ measures in the regression models confirms a relationship between road and rail transport. A direct relationship between these two modes of transport confirms the complementarity effect, which means that, in most cases, the goods transport solutions require the combination of road and rail mode, where the railway should be considered as the main transport/carrier, the road transport, however, should have the role of short pre-transport or post-transport. The ecological aspect of such bimodal solutions can also be emphasized since the railway transport is considered as an ecological mode.

The paper points to some methodological and terminological dilemmas in defining the framework of the research as well as the linkage of environmental issues with other relevant issues. Based on the provisions contained in the strategic documents and relevant sources of law there have been analyzed factors that determine the place and the role of the environment in the foreign policy and they are as follows: the state of the environment, the policy objectives of the Republic Serbia (RS) in the environmental field, powers for dealing with environmental issues, powers and way of organizing foreign affairs, perspective of the RS membership in the European Union (EU), global and regional challenges in the environmental field, the place of international co-operation in environmental regulations, membership in international organizations in the environmental field, the status of the RS in international treaties in the environmental field, etc. The second part of the paper emphasizes the possibilities of strengthening the environmental role as a subject of co-operation in achieving certain objectives in the foreign policy of the RS. The author argues the thesis that the place and role of the environment in the foreign policy of the RS are not defined in a clear and precise manner. However, it can be said that the general framework is determined in large part by perspective of the RS membership in the EU and specific regional and global issues in the environmental field.

While the benefits and advantages of using renewable energies are remarkable, and their prices have been decreasing dramatically and are expected to fall further, the diffusion and adoption of renewable energies still lag fossil energies. This paper improves our understanding regarding the role of the interrelationship among businesses (as an example of B2B networking amongst parent and subsidiary firms). Furthermore, it demonstrates the way/s that such interrelationships can contribute to the diffusion and adoption of sustainable and energy-efficient technologies. This study describes four diffusion channels in the interrelated firms which can help with promoting and using renewable and sustainable energies. The paper also reports the actual share of each diffusion channel contributing to implementing sustainable energy-efficient technologies in practice. The findings suggest that parent organisations enforce the majority (over 50%) of sustainable and energy-efficient technologies implemented in a B2B environment. In comparison, inter-subsidiary relationships are responsible for less than 30% of the implemented sustainable and energy-efficient technologies in organisations. The findings are in line with the forced perspective theory. They could, to some degree, explain the differences in the levels of implementation of sustainable and energy-efficient technologies in practice. These findings can help practitioners prioritise the diffusion channels when they want to facilitate the implementation of new technologies in their organisations. While some organisations may expect a more successful implementation of innovations initiated by subsidiaries than those enforced by parent organisations, the levels of success of the adoption of sustainable and energy-efficient technologies are not examined in this study. Further research is recommended to investigate the extent of association between different diffusion channels and the levels of success in terms of the adoption of innovation. We did not find similar studies to compare the results, which could be one of the limitations of this study.

AbstractAs far as sustainable transport development is concerned, transfer of cargo from road transport to short sea shipping, which, according to the common opinion, generates lower external costs, is one of the objectives of the European Union policy. However, the latest research results indicate that some Ro-Ro vessels and ferries generate higher external costs than road transport. In light of this, benefits resulting from transferring the cargo from road to sea seem to be questionable. The main aim of the article is answering the question whether, and if so, how ferry and Ro-Ro shipping contributes to development of sustainable transport? In order to answer this question, an analysis of ferry and Ro-Ro shipping lines functioning in European transport system has been conducted. The article presents research results based on an analysis of approx. 900 ferry and Ro-Ro shipping lines considering the length and time of voyage compared to alternative road transport. Usually, the course of sea shipping route does not cover the route of the road transport, and therefore the lengths of both routes frequently considerably differ, which significantly affects the total external costs generated by them. On the basis of the analysis, the shipping lines have been classified according to the criterion of their substitutability to road transport and their role in sustainable transport development.

Developing countries, like Iran, have challenging environmental problems – the need to improve the state of the environment, for human beings and other living creatures, is among the most serious challenges for comprehensive development in such countries. Governments and local organizations could not single-handedly tackle the destruction, and its associated problems in the environment. Consequently, the value and role of public participation in administrating nations and developing democratic societies has drawn attention to the idea of citizen participation in management. Involvement of citizens in environmental issues is considered as one of the key realms of governmental strategic planning. Lack of systematic knowledge and sufficient awareness among officials and major decision makers has become a main source of challenges and problems in this area. This has resulted in a poor assessment of current situations and the consequent inability to provide the best conditions for employing the resources of civic engagement in environmental issues. This research aims to review related studies covering the topic of citizen participation in policy making, with regards to the environment.

Tri Hita Karana (THK) is a philosophy of life that has taken root in Hindu society in Bali. Tri Hita Karana means three causes of happiness that are created from the harmonious relationship between humans and the natural environment (Palemahan), humans and the social environment of society (pawongan), humans and the spiritual / God environment (Parhayangan). One effort to implement the Tri Hita Karana concept in the field of tourism is through annual competition and accreditation of eco-friendly tourism in the perspective of the Tri Hita Karana tourism Awards and Accreditations-THK Awards that have been held since 2000. The role of an architect in realizing Tri Hita Karana tourism Awards and Accreditations is needed especially in realizing two of the three aspects of the Tri Hita Karana tourism Awards and Accreditations, namely planning and building a villa residence. Knowledge, experience and professionalism of an architect is very much needed in translating an idea and desire of the owner and implementing oneself in the use of the environment and socio-culture of the local community, so that the design is comfortable, safe, energy efficient, economical and environmentally friendly. An architect must play a role and have a strategy to realize and apply the concepts that already exist in Bali to the fullest, so that Bali's viability can still be maintained..
