This research aims to find out the common errors made by students studying at one of the vocational colleges in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The students’ opinions on their experiences of learning English, particularly in speaking, were also explored. This qualitative-quantitative research design was conducted by collecting some recordings of the students’ speaking performance, and distributing questionnaires on the process of teaching and learning EFL to be filled in by the participants. In the analysis, the data from the recordings were coded, transcribed, described and displayed in accordance with the students’ error items. Meanwhile, the analysis of the questionnaire employed a simple percentage calculation. From the speaking performance, the students in the speaking class produced two types of common errors, i.e. pronunciation and grammar errors. The common errors in their English pronunciation vary between the vowel and the consonant. The errors in vowel production were produced the most. Meanwhile, 70% of the students made errors in grammar on language tense and some on plural morphemes. From the questionnaire, it was revealed that even though the students tried to speak English well, all of them were aware and agreed that they made grammatical errors when speaking English.

The aim of this study has been to investigate the grammatical errors most frequently made by Greek learners of Spanish as a foreign language (SFL) in the written expression of the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). During the learning process, students formulate hypotheses through the use of strategies and psycholinguistic mechanisms, which is why our study also goes deeper into the description of these strategies in order to detect the causes that originate the errors. The classification of errors is based on linguistic, descriptive and etiological criteria. The data obtained come from real written productions of the Greek students. For the analysis we have applied a quantitative research. Percentages of the frequent errors we have located are given in the results. The results obtained from our analysis and research and also the conclusions we have reached are relevant for the prevention of grammatical errors and the optimization of teaching Spanish language to Greek learners.

In Indonesia, one of the common problems encountered by many English teachers during the process of teaching and learning in the classroom is students’ unwillingness to communicate using English. Having learners who are willing to communicate using English in class is essential in a language classroom that following the communicative approach (Riasati, 2012). This study aims to investigate students’ perceptions towards willingness to communicate using English in the classroom. It employs a quantitative approach, survey research design. To know the students’ willingness to communicate using English, a well-known FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) developed by Horwitz, E.K., Horwitz, and M. B., Cope J. (1986) was adapted. 115 students of SMK Negeri 10 Malang participated as the respondents. Based on the findings, it is concluded that tenth and eleventh grade students at SMK Negeri 10 Malang have a positive opinion towards willingness to communicate using English in the classroom. They stated that learning and communicating using English is essential and beneficial. However, their willingness to communicate using English itself is quite low and it is quite a serious problem.

This paper explores the perspective of college students regarding emotional intelligence in higher education. A great number of changes in the education system globally has developed new expectations for teachers. These days, teachers are not just the authority in a classroom but a mentor. Thus, emotions play a significant role in the teaching and learning process. This paper argues that mastery in subject matter does not make the best teacher in the eyes of students, rather emotional intelligence does. Emotional intelligence is neither the opposite of intelligence nor just the battle between mind and heart but it is the unique intersection of both. Quantitative research was done with 201 college students from different educational backgrounds. The data was analyzed with the theoretical modality influenced by Daniel Goleman's ‘Emotional Intelligence' method. The first part of the research explores what aspects of teacher’s students associate with being the best, and the second portion explores what behaviors the students want in their teachers in general. This research helps to identify emotional intelligence, a new domain introduced in the teaching and learning process, as significant, even from the student's perspective. <p>The controversy of using L1 or L2 only in second language classes has been widely discussed in many studies. Some teachers, however, opt for the middle ground by employing the bilingual approach; they practice code switching to some extent to facilitate teaching learning process.  In the context of BIPA teaching and learning this issue has not been sufficiently addressed. Therefore, this study seeks to explore the teachers as well as the students’ attitude towards the practice of code-switching in BIPA classes, specifically in the basic level classes. The factors behind its practice will also be discussed in the light of its benefit and hindrance for teaching learning process. This study employed a quantitative research design by conducting a survey and a qualitative research design by interpreting the result of the interview with the teachers and students. In general the study indicates the need of code-switching to support teaching and learning process, especially for the beginner level classes.</p><em>BAHASA INDONESIA ABSTRAK: Kontroversi penggunaan hanya bahasa pertama atau bahasa kedua dalam kelas bahasa kedua telah banyak dibahas dalam banyak penelitian.

The purpose of the current study is to investigate whether peer video recording helps non-English majored college students enhance their speaking performance. Eighty students were selected and assigned to two groups: an experimental group and a control group. Peer video recording was presented to experimental students while no training was given to students in the control group in the same task-based approach. The data, collected based on a pre-posttest design, were analyzed to find out whether or not there were differences between two groups in terms of fluency, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and interactive communication. A questionnaire-based survey was also implemented to explore students&rsquo; attitudes on the treatment&mdash;peer video recording task-based approach. The study&rsquo;s results revealed that students in the group treated with peer video recording task-based approach significantly outperformed those in the control group in terms of fluency, grammar, pronunciation and interactive communication while students&rsquo; vocabulary score remained after the treatment. In addition, the data obtained from the questionnaire indicated the experimental students had positive attitudes towards the peer video task-based approach. The results from the study provide grounds for some suggestions and recommendations for the teachers, the students as well as the teaching and learning speaking in Vietnam.

English is a fundamental language to learn as it is used worldwide. The teaching and learning of English has been emphasized in Malaysia as English plays a major role in global communication. However, speaking performance was recorded as poor and weak among pupils in ESL classrooms. Previous researchers explored a myriad of communicative language activities to improve speaking skill. Board games are employed as one of the most useful tools to improve speaking skills among pupils. This systematic review was conducted to examine pupils’ perceptions on the use of board games in learning and speaking, as well as the usefulness of board games in improving their speaking skill. A total of 35 articles, from the period 2017–2021, were accessed through three databases: Google Scholar, ERIC and SAGE Journals. The review was conducted systematically based on the guidelines from the PRISMA statement (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). Based on the articles gathered, the results showed that the qualitative research design was mostly used to collect pupils’ opinions on the use of board games, while quantitative research design was mostly used to evaluate the usefulness of board games in improving speaking. Overall, the systematic review revealed that board games had several positive impacts in pupils’ speaking performances such as improving speaking competency, enhancing motivation in speaking and increasing interpersonal interaction among pupils. It is suggested that future studies could focus on investigating teachers’ opinions on the use of board games in teaching and speaking.
