This work investigates the role and contribution of external auditing as practised in Malaysian society during the forty year period from independence in 1957 to just before the onset of Asian Financial Crisis in 1997. It applies the political economic theory introduced by Tinker (1980) and refined by Cooper & Sherer (1984), which emphasises the social relations aspects of professional activity rather than economic forces alone. In a case study format where qualitative data were gathered mainly from primary and secondary source materials, the study has found that the function of auditing in Malaysian society in most cases is devoid of any essence of mission; instead it is created, shaped and changed by the pressures which give rise to its development over time. The largely insignificant role that it serves is intertwined with the contexts in which it operates.

In this article, I explore an experimental form of writing I term poetic juxtaposition. Drawing from Glesne’s poetic transcription and Prendergast’s use of found poetry as literature review, I define poetic juxtaposition as the creation of research poems that artistically combine qualitative data, excerpts from theoretical texts, and words from every day and popular culture texts. To illustrate the technique, I present three poetic juxtapositions from a critical parent child autoethnography and describe the processes that lead to their creation. The three poems demonstrate how I utilized poetic juxtaposition to make sense of data, establish emergent themes, achieve crystallization of findings, and present my work to a variety of audiences. I conclude by suggesting how this technique might be taken up by others.

Recently, several authors have attempted to make the literature review process more transparent by providing a step-by-step guide to conducting literature reviews. However, although these works are very informative, none of them delineate how to display information extracted from literature reviews in a reader-friendly and visually appealing manner. Thus, the purpose of this article was to provide a framework for visually displaying information extracted for literature reviews via Miles and Huberman’s (1994) within- and cross-case displays. As part of our demonstration of the utility of visual displays, we use an actual body of published works that were subjected to some of these displays. Finally, we illustrate how to use a qualitative data analysis software program to facilitate these visual displays.

Fatigue represents a major problem in aviation. Therefore, it is important to identify fatigue among pilots early enough before an incident or an accident occurs. The aim of our study has been to conduct a literature review on measurements of fatigue among pilots; to find out which measurements are used to recognize fatigue and what the results of conducted studies are with the focus on the usefulness of tests for measuring fatigue. The findings are based on meta-analysis. For the purpose of our study, we have used electronic databases Google Scholar, Emerald, MedLit and Academic Search Complete. The content analysis of the articles has been used to summarize and compare qualitative data. The results obtained show that tests for measuring fatigue can be divided into two groups, objective tests and subjective tests. Pilots’ subjective fatigue is mostly evaluated using Samn-Perelli fatigue scale, which is widely used in the aviation industry and it provides data for comparison. The contribution of our study is the widened understanding of fatigue measuring and usefulness of these measurements among pilots. The findings of our research are descriptive in nature. Further studies should be focused on deeper investigation of this topic and could include case studies of fatigue among pilots with qualitative data.

African countries continue to be prone to drought, caused mainly by unfavorable weather patterns and climatic variations which have an adverse impact on rural households and agricultural production. This literature review article accounted for the aforesaid drawbacks and attempted to assess the effect of drought on food insecurity in African countries. This article further sought to dissect the resilience and climate change adaptation strategies applied by African countries to mitigate the adverse effects of drought on food insecurity in rural livelihoods. The hermeneutic framework was adopted in this study, where the secondary data sources were searched from credible bibliographic and multidisciplinary databases and organizational websites. Thereafter, it was classified, mapped, and critically assessed using the qualitative data analysis software NVivo to generate patterns and themes. The NVivo program is a qualitative data analysis software package produced by QSR International and which helps qualitative researchers to organize, analyze, and find insights in qualitative data; for example, in journal articles where multilayered analysis on small or large volumes of data are required. This article has the potential to contribute in theory, concept, policy, and practice regarding best practices, resilience, and climate change adaptation strategies that can be harnessed by rural people. Furthermore, this article has the potential to shed light on the role played by traditional leadership and policy improvements in ensuring there is sufficient food during periods of drought.
