This experiment was aimed to reveal the effect of seed physical scarification and various growing mediaon vigor of Moringa oleifera. This study was conducted in greenhouse and consisted of two phases ofexperiment; first was studied the effect of physical scarification on seed germination of M. oleifera and thesecond was studied the effect of seed physical scarification and various sub optimum growing media onvigor of M. oleifera. The germination test was arranged in randomized completely design with 4 treatmentsthat were P0 = non scarification, P1 = one side scarification, P2 = two sides scarification, and P3 = full sidescarification. The variables measured were germination percentage (%) and seedling dry weight (g/plant).The second study was arranged in a factorial randomized completely design with the four treatments ofscarification (P0, P1, P2 and P3) over six growing media (sands, bricks, bricks and sands mixture, bricksand soils mixture, soils and sands mixture, and soils). The variables observed were petioles number, plantheight (cm/plant), and plant dry weight (g/plant). The scarification was significantly affect (P<0.05) thegermination percentage and seedling dry weight. Scarification and growing media also affected the vigorof M. oleifera significantly (P<0.05). Two side seed scarification improve the germination and seedling dryweight instead of control. Combination of scarification in two sides and growing media of soils and sandsmixture given the highest vigor of M. oleifera reflected on petioles number, plant height, and plant dry weight. ABSTRACT: The objective of the following research was to investigate the physiological responses of two bahiagrass genotypes (Paspalum notatum Flügge) submitted to water restriction, induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG6000), during seed germination. Seeds of cv. Pensacola (diploid) and Bagual ecotype (tetraploid) were placed on paper moistened with osmotic solutions at potentials of 0.0; -0.1; -0.2 and -0.3 MPa. Composed of two subsamples of 100 seeds and four experimental units per treatment, the germination test was conducted in a germination chamber under alternating temperatures of 30 °C (8 hours) and 20 °C (16 hours), with presence of light during the higher temperature. Final germination percentage and germination speed index of the seeds, as well as early growth, activity and expression of antioxidant enzymes of seedlings were evaluated. The water restriction induced by PEG6000 reduced the percentage of germination in Pensacola (from 74% to 59%) and Bagual (34% to 10%). For the latter, the evaluation of seedlings showed higher dry mass in relation to cv. Pensacola (1.7 times higher in root and 1.6 times in shoot). In response to moderate water restriction, the genotypes showed increases in root growth (1.7 times higher in -0.1 compared to 0.0 MPa), both in expression and enzymatic activity (superoxide dismutase and catalase).

Genotypic variation and horticultural potential of Alnus maritima [Marsh.] Nutt. (seaside alder), a large shrub or small tree found naturally in only three small, disjunct populations, have not been studied. We examined effects of population of origin and environment on seed germination and growth and morphology of seedlings. The first experiment showed that 6 weeks of cold stratification optimized germination of half-sibling seeds from Oklahoma at 73.2%. When this treatment was applied to multiple groups of half-siblings from all populations in a second experiment, seeds from Oklahoma had a higher germination percentage (55.0%) than seeds from Georgia (31.4%) and the Delmarva Peninsula (14.7%). In a third experiment, morphology and growth of multiple groups of half-siblings from all three populations were compared in one environment. Leaves of seedlings from Oklahoma were longer (12.8 cm) and more narrow (2.15 length to width ratio) than leaves of seedlings from Georgia (12.0 cm long; ratio = 1.76) and the Delmarva Peninsula (11.6 cm long; ratio = 1.86). Seedlings from Oklahoma and Georgia accumulated dry weight at higher rates (181 and 160 mg·d-1, respectively) than seedlings from Delmarva (130 mg·d-1), while seedlings from Oklahoma and Delmarva were more densely foliated (0.72 and 0.64 leaves and lateral shoots per centimeter of primary stem, respectively) than those from Georgia (0.46 per cm). These differences indicate genetic divergence among the three disjunct populations and the potential to exploit genetic variation to select horticulturally superior A. maritima for use in managed landscapes.

A study was conducted in the Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh from April to August 2012 to examine the salinity tolerance of eight jute varieties (CVE-3, C-83, CVL-1, BJC-7370, O-795, O-9897, OM-1, O-72) and two kenaf varieties (HC-95 and HC-2). Initially germination of these varieties were evaluated under six salinity levels viz. 0mM, 20mM, 40mM, 60mM, 80mM, and 100mM NaCl in the seed laboratory of the Department of Agronomy. Afterwards, all the varieties was grown in pots in the net house under four salinity levels viz. 0mM, 25mM, 50mM, and 75mM. The results from the germination study revealed that under control condition (0mM NaCl) all the jute varieties showed germination more than 80% both at 7 and at 14 days after seed sowing, whereas kenaf varieties had germination a little less than 80%. Among the jute varieties, O-72 showed the highest germination (92%), which was statistically similar with those of OM-1(91%), O-795 (90%), and C-83(87%). Salinity stress decreased germination drastically in all of the jute and kenaf varieties. A salinity level of 100mM caused the highest germination inhibition (74.70%) in jute variety CVL-1, which was very close to those of BJC-7370 and O-72. On the other hand, the lowest germination inhibition (51.11%) was recorded in jute variety O-795. The results of the pot trail showed that the plant characters of jute and kenaf varieties were affected significantly by salinity stress. All the varieties produced their respective plant height, number of leaves per plant, and plant dry weight under control condition (no salinity). Among these varieties, CVE-3 produced the highest plant height (145.2cm), and total dry weight (22.55g), whereas O-72 produced the highest number of leaves per plant (24.67). All these plant characters decreased sharply due to salinity stress irrespective of variety. However, the rate of decrease of plant characters occurred differentially in the jute and kenaf varieties. The highest rate of decrease in number of leaves (74.22%) was found from the variety CVE-3, whereas the lowest one was recorded from the variety HC-2 (51.68%). Salinity stress caused the highest decrease in total plant dry weight (73.68%) in the variety CVL-1 and plant height (73.64%) also in the variety CVL-1. On the contrary, the lowest decrease in plant dry weight (50.99%) was found in the variety O-9897 and plant height also in variety O-9897 (50.88%). Based on the results from germination test and pot trail, it can be inferred that jute variety O-9897 appeared to be the most salt tolerant followed by O-795, HC-2, HC-95, CVE-3, O-72, C-83, BJC-7370, OM-1, and CVL-1.

This project tested rates of lignite-activated water (LAW) for its influence on seed germination, cutting propagation, and plant performance. LAW is a product of CAW Industries, Rapid City, S.D. LAW is water-activated by lignite in a process that includes the addition of sulfated castor oil, calcium chloride, magnesium sulfate, sodium meta silicate, and fossilized organics from refined lignite. LAW is reported to improve many plant performance traits. Four rates were used in this study. Seed germination trials indicated no significant differences in germination percentage with LAW applications with the two species tested, Echinacea purpurea and Hibiscus dasycalyx. In a “closed” system, LAW enhanced cutting propagation success of Aster caroliniana, Cuphea micropetala, and Verbena `Homestead Purple', as measured by percent rooting and dry weight of roots produced. Cutting propagation of two woody species, Illicium henryi and Rosa banksiae, was not improved with LAW additions. In the SFASU Arboretum, pansy performance, as measured by plant dry weight, was improved one month after establishment.

Seed size may influence seed germination, and seedling vigor. Few investigations are available about the effect of seed size on barley seedling vigor in Jordan. The present study was designed to investigate the impact of seed size on germination percentage, seedling dry weight, seedling vigor index, and germination percentage after accelerated aging in barley. Three seed sizes i.e. large, medium, and small (having diameter of > 2.75 millimeter, 2.5 - 2.75 millimeter, and less than 2.5 millimeter, respectively) were tested in the experiment. Seed quality for different seed size categories was evaluated in the laboratory by measuring seed germination, germination after accelerated aging, as well seedling dry weight and vigor index. Results showed significant differences for large seeds in germination percentages, seedling dry weight and vigor index. It may be concluded that large seed size of barley showed best quality.

Growth of FHIA-17 Banana Seedlings with the Application of Hijauan Paitan Fertilizer (Titonia Diversifolia) and Cow Manure. The aim of this study was to obtain data on the growth of FHIA-17 banana seedlings after application of T.diversifolia forage and cow manure. Using a factorial Randomized Block Design (CRD) with two treatment factors. The first factor is the forage dose of T. diversifolia (P) with 5 levels, P0=Control; P1=12.5 g kg-1 planting medium (equivalent to 5 tons ha-1); P2=25 g kg-1 planting medium (equivalent to 10 tons ha-1); P3=37.5 g / kg of planting media (equivalent to 15 tons ha-1); P4=50 g kg-1 of growing media (equivalent to 20 tons ha-1). The second factor is the dose of cow manure (K) with 5 treatment levels namely, K0=Control; P1=12.5 g kg-1 of growing media (equivalent to 5 tons ha-1); K2=25 g kg-1 of growing media (equivalent to 10 tons ha-1); K3= 37.5 g kg-1 of growing media (equivalent to 15 tons ha-1); K4=50 g kg-1 planting medium (equivalent to 20 tons ha-1 and repeated 2 (two) times. Observed parameters were plant height (cm), number of leaves, stem circumference (mm), plant wet weight (g), plant dry weight (g). The results of this study indicate that the application of forage T. diversifolia significantly affected plant height and number of leaves. It’s not real with respect to all observational parameters.

Gundelia tournefortii L. is adapted to mountains area climate, and the germination of this plant is not easily. This research conducted to study the effect of different seed treatments in various treatment durations in two experiments in petri dish in the laboratory and in seedling tray in the lath house to breaking seed dormancy and germination stimulus. Results indicated that there is significant enhancement of germination by all treatments and the maximum germination percentage was obtained by seed freezing 99.17% in the laboratory and 93.33% in the lath house for all treatment durations 12, 14, 48 and 72 hours. The other parameters of seed germination like germination speed, peak value, mean daily germination, mean germination time, germination value, radicle length, radicle elongation velocity, plumule length, plumule elongation velocity, seedling fresh and dry weight escalated by seed freezing and seed soaking in tap water at all soaking durations 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours. Gundelia tournefortii L. germinated seed was an anatomically examined by paraffin method and calculated diploid number of chromosomes 2n=2x=18 by aceto-carmine squash methods

Gaillardia aristata Foug. is a hardy, drought-tolerant perennial found throughout much of the United States. Little information exists on the salt tolerance of this plant when grown in various growing media. A study was conducted to characterize the response of G. aristata to three salinity levels (0.8, 2.0, or 4.0 dS/m) and four growing media: 1) 100% perlite; 2) 1 perlite: 1 Sunshine mix No. 4 (v/v); 3) 100% Sunshine mix No. 4; or 4) 1 Sunshine mix No. 4: 1 composted mulch (v/v). The type of medium influenced the dry weight of roots but not shoots, while salinity significantly influenced the dry weight of both shoots and roots. The dry weight of shoots was higher in plants irrigated with tap water (0.8 dS/m) compared to those irrigated with saline solution at 2.0 or 4.0 dS/m except for those grown in 100% Sunshine mix. The ratio of root to shoot dry weight was not influenced by salinity, but was highest in the plants grown in 100% perlite. Both medium and salinity affected plant height. Elevated salinity reduced plant height. Plants were taller when grown in 100% perlite and in 1 Sunshine mix: 1 composted mulch. However, plants had fewer lateral shoots when grown in 100% perlite or 1 Sunshine mix: 1 composted mulch. Some of the flower buds aborted when grown in 100% Sunshine mix or 1 perlite: 1 Sunshine mix compared to none in plants grown in 100% perlite or 1 Sunshine mix: 1 composted mulch. These results indicate that growth and morphology of G. aristata were affected by not only salinity, but also the type of medium.

This research was aimed to identify the influence of Atonic cencentration to the growth of single-node Vanilla cutting planted at various growing media types. Completely randomized design was used in this research with two factors namely Atonic concentration (500 ppm, 1000 ppm, 1500 ppm, 2000 ppm, dan 2500 ppm) and growing media types (tanah, pasir, tanah + pupuk kandang, tanah + pasir, tanah + pasir + pupuk kandang). The result showed that there were no interaction between Atonic concentration and growing media types to the growth of single-node vanilla cutting. Furthermore, the application of Atonic concentration at 2000 ppm established the best result of root length (12,32 cm) and root dry weight (0,16); while the best result of germination percentage (92,23%) revealed by Atonic concentration of 1500 ppm. Regression analysis of germination percentage showed that the optimal concentration of Atonic was 1842 ppm with R<sup>2</sup> = 60,3%. Mixed media of soil + sand + dung performed the best result in root length, root dry weight and germination percentage.

Sari. Kentang termasuk jenis sayuran komersial bernilai tinggi yang dapat dijadikan sebagai pangan alternatif. Rendahnya ketersediaan benih kentang  dapat berpengaruh terhadap produksi kentang. Terbatasnya lahan penanaman kentang di dataran tinggi sehingga diperlukan ekstensifikasi di dataran medium melalui rekayasa media tumbuh dan hormon tumbuh yang bisa mengurangi efek negatif penanaman kentang di dataran medium.  Percobaan ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui interaksi antara komposisi media tanam dengan waktu aplikasi zat pengatur tumbuh terhadap pertumbuhan dan hasil benih kentang G2 kultivar Medians di dataran medium Jatinangor. Percobaan dilaksanakan di Kebun Percobaan Ciparanje, Fakultas Pertanian, Universitas Padjadjaran, Jatinangor. Rancangan percobaan yang digunakan yaitu Rancangan Acak Kelompok Faktorial. Faktor pertama adalah komposisi media tanam dan faktor kedua adalah waktu aplikasi zat pengatur tumbuh sitokinin dan paclobutrazol. Hasil percobaan menunjukkan bahwa tidak terjadi interaksi komposisi media tanam dengan waktu aplikasi zat pengatur tumbuh terhadap pertumbuhan dan hasil benih kentang G2. Komposisi media tanah, kompos, arang sekam, dan cocopeat (perbandingan ( ) 1:1:1:1) menunjukkan tinggi tanaman, luas daun, bobot kering tanaman, jumlah ubi dan bobot ubi per tanaman tertinggi. Waktu aplikasi 20 hari setelah tanam (HST) sitokinin dan 40 HST paclobutrazol dapat menekan tinggi tanaman namun menghasilkan jumlah ubi dan bobot ubi per tanaman tertinggi. Kata Kunci: kentang, media, sitokinin, paclobutrazol, dataran  Abstract. Potatoes are a high-value commercial vegetable that can be used as an alternative food. The low availability of potato seeds affect potato production. The limited area of potatoes in the highlands caused extensification in the medium land is needed through engineering of growing media and growth hormones. It probably can reduce the negative effects of planting potatoes on the medium lands of Jatinangor. The experiment was carried out at the Ciparanje Station, Faculty of Agriculture, Padjadjaran University, Jatinangor. The experiment was using Randomized Block Design with factorial treatment.  The first factor was the growing media compositions, while the second factor was the times of growth regulating substances application. The experimental results showed that there was no interaction effect of the growing media compositions and times of growth regulating substances application to growth and yield of the G2 potato seed. Compositions of soil, compost, husk charcoal, and cocopeat (1:1:1:1) showed plant height, leaf area, dry weight, numbers of tubers, and weights of tubers per plant were higher than other treatments. The times of application 20 days after planting (DAP) cytokinin and 40 DAP paclobutrazol suppressed plant height, however it produce numbers and weights of tubers per plant were higher. Keywords: potatoes, growing media, cytokinin, paclobutrazol, medium land
