Alternative forms of housing continue to develop along with the emergence of various problems from the massive vertical housing development in cities today, ranging from physical problems to the area to social problems among residents of vertical housing themselves. The domination of private space and the lack of public space has created a passive residential environment with minimal interaction. This has resulted in a lack of social control among residents who have made vertical housing a place that is prone to crime, such as several apartments in Jakarta which are known as locations for hidden prostitution, and even suicides. The city of Jakarta is one of the cities that has experienced massive vertical housing development. There needs to be a solution to solve settlement problems in the city of Jakarta through the scientific field of architecture with the concept of digital housing for communities. The purpose of this study is to implement the concept of digital shelter for communities supported by supporting theories oriented to human interaction in an architectural design object system in the form of vertical housing supported by digital equipment or technology.

The design of Urban Resort motivated by the increasing number of tourists coming to the city of Solo as increasing tourism potential. The increasing number of tourist coming and tourist potential are not accompanied by an increase in the numbers LOS (Length Of Stay) and the availability of lodging facilities that accommodate in Solo. The purpose of this scheme is to get a building design that is able to accommodate the needs of lodging accommodations and recreation in the form of a resort hotel in the center of the city of Solo with the implementation of ecological architecture as a form of support to the Government to make Solo as an ecological city. Design issues are: how the concept of ecological architecture can be applied in the design of Urban Resort in Surakarta. The method used is the method of architectural design with mix of the theory about ecological architecture with Government Regulation about requirements of five star resort hotel. The results obtained are the design of urban resort as a means of lodging accommodations, and public space as a tourist attraction and people who apply the concept of ecology architecture on the shape and appearance of the building. So that the building can give the impression of a comfortable and natural even though the resort hotel located in the middle city of Solo.

Based on qualitative research among female Dutch-Moroccan teenagers in two underprivileged neighborhoods in the city of Utrecht, the Netherlands, this article focuses on the spatial practices of young Muslim women in public space. Compared to their male counterparts, who “hang around” in groups, female teens spend less time in public space. We focus on girls’ “wandering practices” through the neighborhood, a spatial practice structured by their search for freedom (to spend time outside the home, to talk to friends in private) and by social control (to avoid the presence of young men, to avoid being gossiped about). Our research shows that wandering both decreases their visibility and pushes against gendered cultural norms about women in public space. By analyzing their wandering as a form of social navigation, we show how these teenagers maneuver through both the physical neighborhood and the gendered cultural norms regarding appropriate behavior in public space.

AbstractThe following piece of writing is a bibliographic review that was developed from three key concepts of Lefebvre: Right to the City, Social Control and Urban Space. It was conceived within the framework of his lines of research and Marxist orientation. The research intends to use the author's appreciations in mention, framed in the events of the city at present, and to transfer to the re-reading of specific problems in two Latin American cities: Cuenca-Ecuador and Córdoba-Argentina. Based on the right to the city defined by Lefebvre, a critique was made of the new urban planning area in Cuenca, based on functionalist principles, which has hierarchized vehicle circulation to the detriment of the pedestrian use of public space. Under the same line of the criticism of modernity, social control was manifested in a sector of the city of Córdoba, the Government House site. Problems in similar contexts were analyzed, but at the same time with different city scales. It allowed us to validate Lefebvre's thesis and reflections in his time for the planning of contemporary cities, whose development models have resulted in deficiencies in urban life. Keywords: Cities, social control, Right to the city, urban space, urban life.

In this article it is argued that Tehran itself as well as the Iranians’ conception of Tehran is changing. The size of Tehran, the capital of Iran, has within a few decades risen explosively from no more than 300.000 inhabitants in the 1930s to more than 9 million people today. At the same time the city has experienced a radical demographic divide between the lower, warmer, poorer and more traditional South and the richer, more modern North close to the cooler mountains. The conception of Tehran today is that of “a modern part” of Iran; i.e. North Tehran. While everybody agrees that Tehran is modern, the significance of this modernity is vehemently debated. The technological and financial aspect of Tehran’s modernity is unanimously seen as a positive feature, whereas the individualistic aspect of this modernity to some Iranians is seen as a moral threat to society, while others see it as a liberalising and positive force in society. In other words Tehran has become the battlefield of morality where “true Islam” meets “modern corruption”, “true Iranianism” meets “Western decadence” etc. And nowhere is this seen more explicitly than in the parks of Tehran. The urban parks have within the last decade developed into semi-private spaces partly free of government control, neighbours’ gossip and family restrictions. The culture of the private space (the home) has thus been moved into the public space, and at the same time this transformation causes the emergence of the modern, secularised urban individual, which to some extent demands separation of religion and state. This urban individual can no longer be controlled by the local priest and cannot be restricted from receiving news and viewpoints from outside of the national state-controlled media. Tehran has in this way become a physical and symbolical battlefield, where the dialectical and often contradicting moral consequences of modernity are being negotiated, restricted and craved.

Public Space and Shopping Mall in the Contemporary City: New Meanings of North Shopping in Fortaleza/CE Abstract Start a discussion about the current city us the need to build an analysis on malls as spaces that have attracted a considerable flow of people, causing changes in the relationships of the townspeople with the public spaces. This article presents the specific rhetoric of social control present in the sections of national and municipal legislation pertaining to conduct in public spaces of Vilnius, Lithuania.Theoretically, the paper utilises M. Foucault’s framework of power modalities both because of Foucault’s engaged questioning of power and the applicability of his insights to the spatial dimensions of the city. The paper bases its interpretive scheme on two premises: a) that law reveals biopolitical and disciplinary aspects of social control; and b) that urban public space presents a valuable case for the analysis of these aspects.A qualitative content analysis of national and municipal legislation has revealed that national legislation is driven by biopolitical objectives and municipal legislation by disciplinary ones. The national legislation focuses the regulation of public space on public order, public calm, and public dignity – public mores that must be upheld in the interest of the population and expanding beyond strictly public space. Disciplinarity is evident in municipal legislation insofar as it breaks space up into governable fragments, imposing painstakingly detailed prohibitions and obligations, and building a hierarchy inside the population between the desired and subnormal subject.

Chapter 6 looks at the response from the Jordan administration on Food Not Bombs’ sister organization, Homes Not Jails, which illegally housed the homeless in abandoned buildings. In interviews with people involved in both Food Not Bombs and Homes Not Jails, I was often told stories of police leniency with the squatters, something that was unheard of for Food Not Bombs’ actions. This differential treatment concerns the political nature of space and the city’s desire to hide the homeless from public view. Because the city wanted to push the homeless into private space, Homes Not Jails, by illegally housing the homeless in abandoned houses, ended up unintentionally working to help the Jordan administration achieve part of his public space goal. This chapter argues that city agencies react to autonomous political projects differently depending on whether they erupt in what the state defines as public or private space.
