Nabokov's translation of L. Carroll's fairy tale "Alice in Wonderland" is analyzed in the article in two aspects: in the context of the meaning of the translation made at the early stage of Nabokov's creative evolution, in the writer's work, as well as in the aspect of translation features aimed at russifying the original, which make it possible to identify the translation as free. Through a comparative analysis of the translated work "Anya in Wonderland" with later Russian-language novels ("Invitation to Execution", "Gift"), as well as the writer's English-language works ("Lolita", "Ada"), the author of the article comes to the conclusion about the heroine's identity Anya's translated fairy tale to Nabokov's heroes in the aspect of their search for an artistic world corresponding to their inner content.

The issue of topical problems and promising areas of research of translanguaging as a communicative practice of multilinguals in English-language and Russian-language scientific publications of recent years is considered in the article. The results of a comparative analysis of scientific works on translanguaging, highlighting key supporting ideas and concepts, are presented. The novelty of the research is seen in the fact that modern publications on translanguaging as a communicative practice that have not yet been analyzed or sufficiently covered in similar review works are summarized. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that translanguaging is a new idea on a historical scale, which has gained significant popularity over the past years, which, in turn, causes the need to systematize and streamline the array of scientific works that have accumulated during this time. A review of the approaches proposed by various authors to the content of the concept of “translanguaging” in those cases when the latter is considered as a communicative practice is performed, as well as of the methodological principles and foundations on which various studies of translanguaging as a communicative practice are built. Based on the analysis of publications, possible problems and promising areas of research in translanguaging are highlighted.

The article presents the consideration of the issues of semantics and pragmatics of crisis banking term system and its translation from English into Russian. The study of crisis banking term system is instigated due to the lack of linguistic works on the comparative analysis of semantic and pragmatic features of the crisis banking vocabulary presented in English and Russian. It has been established that the financial and economic crisis largely predetermined the formation of new terminological units that significantly supplemented the banking term systems of the English and Russian languages. It has been revealed that most of the new terms refer to the newly introduced anti-crisis vocabulary, along with lexemes that denote financial banking technologies aimed at improving the services provided by banks. Moreover, it has been particularly noted that the considerable part of the newly formed terms is obtained as a result of violation of the language norm of the English language, with consequent changes of the meaning, which is observed in the process of translation of the term into Russian. The article provides examples of the "shifts of meanings" in the English and Russian languages that are analyzed and explained. According to the results of the study, it could be stated that, in both English and Russian terminological units, there is a semantic unity, since the lexemic parts of the terminological phrases of the English language are semantically accurately translated into the Russian language.

The goal of this work consists in semantic analysis of the synonyms of the concept of “fairness” in the sense of "honesty" in speech of English-language and Russian-language modern politicians. The subject of this research is the semantics of lexemes representing the concept of honesty in speech of English and Russian politicians. The existing gaps in comparative linguistics with regards to comparative analysis of the concept of “fairness” and its semantic component in English and Russian journalistic texts define the relevance of this article. The scientific novelty lies in the attempt of comparative analysis of the semantic component of the synonyms of core lexemes of “fairness/honesty”, and their functionality in speech of modern politicians reflected in journalistic texts. In English and Russian languages, the concept of “fairness” is described by the following terms: honesty, law, objectivity, truth. The author conducts comparative analysis of semantics of the synonyms of the concept of fairness in the sense of “honesty”. It was established that in English and Russian journalistic texts featuring the speech of modern English and Russian politicians, honesty implies not only an honest attitude towards something, but also moral, professional, and social dignity that inspires respect, as well as informedness of society on the key decisions, freedom of opinion. Honesty is also openness of borders; willingness to consider ideas and opinions that differ from personal; certain rules and measures that do not lead to unworthy or unacceptable results, as well as an independent decision of the highest authorities. However, in speech of English-speaking politicians, honesty carries rather a legal character, as well as social justice; while in speech of Russian-speaking politicians, honesty means failure to commit immoral, antisocial doings, as well; as being honest first and foremost with yourself.

The paper deals with Sir Thomas Browne, a doctor of medicine, philosopher, and writer of the English Baroque. His legacy holds an enduring appeal for scholars and, more importantly, survives in English language and its literature. It is demonstrated that Browne’s prose played an important role in the shaping of English literature and language, and that his philosophical and scientific views were eclectic. As a separate topic, the article considers problems of translating his prose into other languages. Translations can be spot-on, as shown in the article, when a coincidence of the ‘time of culture’ (Popovich, Borges) between the original and the culture of the translation occurs. For translations into Russian, a problem arises due to the inconsistency (polyglossia) of the 17th-c. Russian language. The author provides a comparative analysis of Browne’s original essays and their Russian translation. She finds that V. Grigoriev’s translations of Browne’s diptych discourses rely on a complex historical stylization, use 18th-c. Russian language, and have proved themselves as a factor of cross-literary communication.

The study is devoted to examine metaphorization as one of the ways of term formation. Metaphor is considered as the main means of linguistic expression of the concept, an integral attribute of professional discourse and one of the ways to create new terms. Metaphors make it easier to perceive the abstract due to their ability to explain a complex vague expression and make it more understandable and clear. The article focuses on metaphors with a color component, which are used as term components for the nomination of economic reality in the financial and economic discourse. The article analyzes three achromatic colors used as color terms: white, black, and gray, examines the specifics of using color metaphors on the example of economic texts published in English-language, Russian-language and French-language media, and concludes that this type of semantic term formation is productive. The article presents definitions of the studied color metaphorical terms and provides examples of their contextual use. Our analysis methodology includes the method of parallel research of metaphors and a definitive and comparative analysis of English, Russian and French color terms. A comparative analysis of the functioning of color terms-metaphors of the financial and economic terminology in three languages showed that the vast majority of metaphors are nominative metaphors. The study allowed us to confirm that the term system of financial and economic vocabulary is closely related to socio-economic reality in society, and the color-coded metaphor terms used in financial and economic discourse represent information in the form of a conceptual model, allowing people to clearly describe economic concepts and transmit information about real events in economic life.

The purpose of the present article is to describe the significance of translator's notes from the point of view of localization of English works of fiction for Russian readership, as well as to identify the types of lexical units that become object of adaptation and the degree of their explication. The theoretical and methodological basis of this study is made up of the key provisions of translation studies, the study of linguistic localization and the study of literary discourse. Within the framework of the present research, a comparative analysis of the concepts of adaptation (pragmatic adaptation) and localization has been carried out to substantiate the advisability of using a new term to name culturally determined modifications of the original text. The characteristics of a literary text have been established, which make it possible to classify works of fiction as objects of localization. Content analysis of the English and Russian versions of the novels Cloud Atlas, The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet and The Slade House by the British writer D. Mitchell has been carried out. The original English-language and translated Russian-language versions of the specified literary works are analyzed, in particular, a comparative analysis of the English-language lexical units and phrases, accompanied by translator's notes in the secondary texts, has been conducted. The advantages of notes as a form of localization of literary texts are indicated. They consist in the possibility of a more detailed and quick description of foreign cultural units in comparison with intra-text transformations.

The article is devoted to questions of formation of cross-cultural communication on the classes with foreign students studying Russian language.. The authors propose to include reading of literary texts and their translation in the system of foreigners’ training with the aim of developing students’ practical skills of cross-cultural communication. Authors pay attention to the fact that the literary text helps to understand another culture and to overcome cultural distance. To facilitate the cultural perception of the text, the authors propose a system of reading of the adapted English literary fairy tale by Lewis Carroll " Alice's Adventures in Wonderland " in a literary translation of Boris Zakhoder. The proposed approach differs from the traditional one because, foreign readers have the opportunity to compare the world view of the English fairy tales author and the Russian translator, and also to correlate his translation from a classic translation. The article focuses on the fact that in connection with the identity of the tales author, the author of literary translation and for the foreign reader to different cultures and different national consciousnesses, the teacher together with the students-foreigners, must overcome cultural and language barriers for successful cross-cultural communication. The authors consider that the task of grammatical, lexical and communicative approach aim at achieving the text comprehension. Additional tasks of translation, that extend the capabilities of traditional work, also help. Tasks presented in the article help the student to understand the main thing: the ignorance of some of the cultural backgrounds of native speakers of a particular country does not mean that we should avoid translation work, because this work helps to learn a different language culture.

The article is devoted to L.I. Strakhovsky (alias Leonid Chatsky; 1898—1963), a Russian writer and poet of the first wave of emigration, and his poetry and prose reflected in foreign publications of his works in Russian. Returning to our culture the name of this author, now half-forgotten in his homeland, and introducing this name into literary studies, the article tries to reveal the thematic and stylistic diversity of L.I. Strakhovsky’s poetry and prose. The research’s object is foreign publications of L.I. Strakhovsky’s artistic works in separate books, almanacs and periodicals published in Belgium, Germany, Canada and identified through collection catalogues of leading Russian libraries (the Russian State library, the Alexander Solzhenitsyn House of Russia Abroad) and library resources that display foreign Russian-language publications by L.I. Strakhovsky. The article highlights and analyzes the main stylistic (symbolism, acmeism, “junior acmeism”) and thematic (autobiographical, English, mystical) components of L.I. Strakhovsky’s works, reveals the components’ individual features, the originality of their constancy and mutual influence. The main of these features is that L.I. Strakhovsky’s works can be stylistically periodized on the basis of the author’s increased propensity to cyclize his works though without creative evolution in the usual sense and with the stable nature of his working throughout his life. To review the publications and analyze the nature of L.I. Strakhovsky’s works, the article draws on the context of Russian and emigrant literature of his era, creatively associated with L.I. Strakhovsky and its main figures, and notes his literary and cultural influence.

The article compares the Slovenian particles še and že mainly with the Russian particles еще and уже. Unlike the Russian particle уже, the Slovenian particle že cannot be combined with the negative form of the verb: instead of it, the adverb več is used in such contexts. The most subtle differences between the Slovenian and Russian languages are found in the combinations of še and že with temporal modifiers, where the so-called “plot time” is characteristic of the Slovenian language. The event is interpreted as localized on the time axis, not from the perspective of the «speaker’s time», which is manifested in the possibility of using že in such contexts as umrl je že v devetnajstem stoletju (he died in the nineteenth century already). Moreover, že is not able to express the meaning ‘no earlier / no later than’, because the particle šele replaces it in this function. The author comes to the conclusion that Slovenian particles are more widely used as modal than their Russian equivalents. The particle še has numerous intensifying functions, correlating with the functions of Russian particles даже, еще и, и. The particle že can be used in the same way as two Russian words уже and уж. In contrast to уж, že does not always express displeasure and can add the meaning of a concession to the statement.
