Medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) have come to the fore in the last two decades with the increasing interest of consumers in natural nutrition and life. Turkey has an important place in terms of MAPs thanks to its geographical location, climate, and plant diversity. MAPs, which show a wide variety, are available in various forms (whole, ground, powder, extract (liquid extract), extract (dry extract), hydrosol or essential oils) due to their flavor, odor, taste, antimicrobial, antioxidant and therapeutic effects. Due to the secondary metabolites in their composition, their use as a functional food ingredient and food supplement besides medicine and pharmacy is also important. In recent years, globalization, urbanization, changing living conditions and divergence of nutritional habits have led consumers to supplementary foods. Necessary regulations have been made in this field with the use of more MAPs in the food supplements market. In this review, some information about MAPs and their use in the production of food supplements are included.

The Brazilian Food Supplement Law recently recognized that guarana (Paullinia cupana) contains bioactive substances, hence supporting its role as a functional food ingredient. The health benefits of guarana are associated, at least in part, to its phenolic compounds. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no literature addressing the presence of phenolic compounds in the fraction containing insoluble-bound compounds and its contribution in terms of alpha-glucosidase inhibition. The concentration of phenolic extracts released from the insoluble-bound fraction required to inhibit 50% of alpha-glucosidase (IC50) activity was 5.8-fold lower than that present in the soluble counterpart. Both fractions exhibited a mixed inhibition mode. Fourteen proanthocyanidins (dimers to tetramers) present in the insoluble-bound fraction were tentatively identified by MALDi-TOF-MS. Future studies aiming at increasing the concentration of the soluble counterpart are deemed necessary. The results presented here enhance the phenolic database of guarana and have a practical impact on the procurement of nutraceuticals and functional ingredients related to the prevention and/or management of type 2 diabetes. The Brazilian normative on food supplements has been recently revised. This study lends support to the future inclusion of guarana powder in the list of sources of proanthocyanidins for the industry of food supplements.

In the history of technology, the loom has come to occupy an important place. While the horizontal handloom has a comparatively simple mechanism, this is not true of the vertical drawloom, which through centuries has developed complex forms. The question of the latter’s presence in India in early times has aroused some controversy. The case is made in this article that it arrived in the thirteenth century from Iran but failed to supplant the handloom in most areas of textile production, except for carpet weaving, mainly in Kashmir.

The aim: The assessment of the therapeutic effects of the herbal medicine containing of ivy leaf dry extract administered twice a day in children with productive cough and their guardians’ satisfaction with the use of this syrup. Material and methods: A multicenter, observational survey was conducted by 268 doctors working in Primary Health Care. The survey was conducted during two routine, consecutive outpatient visits (including first supplemented retrospectively) resulting from the needs of therapy. Results: The study group consisted of 5162 patients treated for productive cough with the herbal medicine containing of ivy leaf dry extract administered twice a day. In 75.7%, productive cough was intense, in 61.6% it occurred at night, in 49.8% it was very common (several times per hour), and in 62.7% it affected daily activity. Most often the syrup containing of ivy leaf dry extract was used in doses twice a day for 2 ml or 4 ml. During observation the percentage of children with intensive, very common, night and affected daily activities cough decreased significantly. Very satisfied with a therapeutic effect of the preparation containing of ivy leaf dry extract administered twice a day were 68.2% of children guardians. Conclusions: The use of the herbal medicine containing of ivy leaf dry extract administered twice a day may be a good alternative to current therapeutic regimens in the treatment of productive cough in children. This recommendation is supported by effectiveness comparable to other medicines and a high level of satisfaction with its use by patients and guardians of chidren.

IntroductionIn the absence of a European standardized postmarketing food supplement surveillance system (nutrivigilance), some member states and companies have developed their own approaches to monitoring potential adverse reactions to secure a high level of product safety. This paper describes the use of a nutrivigilance system in monitoring the incidence of spontaneously reported suspected adverse reactions associated with food supplements containing red yeast rice (RYR).Material and methodsWe report the data from a widely used product marketed under the trademark Armolipid/Armolipid Plus. Postmarketing information was collected in a voluntary nutrivigilance system established by the manufacturing company (Meda Pharma SpA, a Viatris Company, Monza, Italy). From 1st October 2004 to 31st December 2019, this system captured cases of suspected adverse reactions spontaneously reported by consumers, healthcare professionals, health authorities, regardless of causality.ResultsThe total number of case reports received mentioning the RYR food supplement product line was 542, in which 855 adverse events (AEs) were reported. The total reporting rate of AEs was estimated to be 0.037% of 2,287,449 exposed consumers. Of the 542 cases, 21 (0.0009% of exposed consumers) included suspected serious adverse events (SAEs). After careful investigation, 6 cases (0.0003% of consumers exposed) and 6 AEs were assessed by the manufacturer as serious and potentially related to exposure to the above-mentioned RYR-based nutraceutical.ConclusionsThis nutrivigilance-derived data analysis clearly demonstrates a low prevalence of suspected adverse events associated with the red yeast rice product line. Consumer safety of food supplements could be generally improved by raising awareness of the importance of following the indications and warnings detailed in a food supplement’s labeling.

The analysis of the level of consumption of food supplements by Poles raises increasing controversy. Many communities pay attention to the alarming situation, including, among others, Central Apothecary Council, National Institute of Medicine, Office of Competition and Consumer Protection, National Sanitary Inspectorate or the Supreme Chamber of Control. For the purpose of this paper, the studies were conducted with the use of the desk research technique. There are many factors which affect the increase in food supplement sales in Poland. One of them is the lack of basic client knowledge concerning the differences between healthcare products and food supplements. Clients identify supplements with medicine, which is wrong. Due to the above, the purpose of the paper is to demonstrate the differences between healthcare products and food supplements. As result, a set of criteria will be established, which will be used to conduct a comparative analysis for a healthcare product and food supplement.

Abstract The interaction among rootstock, scion and environment may induce different responses to the grapevine physiology and consequently to the grape and wine composition. The vineyards of Serra Gaúcha, Brazil, are established in soils that may have different physicochemical attributes. Furthermore, the grapevines are grafted on a wide diversity of rootstocks. Therefore, this study aimed to determine their effect on the wine composition of the Cabernet Sauvignon (CS) grafted on Rupestris du Lot, 101-14 Mgt, 3309 C, 420A Mgt, 5BB K, 161-49 C, SO4, Solferino, 1103 P, 99 R, 110 R, Gravesac, Fercal, Dogridge and Isabel, featuring some genetic diversity altogether. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with 15 treatments, three replicates and 10 vines per plot. The grapes were harvested at maturity for three years, and then wines were made in glass recipients of 20 L. When alcoholic and malolactic fermentations were over, the wine analyses were performed on twenty-five variables related to alcohol, acidity, dry extract, polyphenols and volatile compounds. The main results show that all variables were affected year by year, some of them by the rootstock and a few by the interaction between rootstock and year. The rootstock effect was observed mainly on variables related to alcohol, acidity and ashes. Results show that the CS/101-14 Mgt wine had higher alcohol content than CS/Dogridge and CS/Isabel wines, which was probably due to the 101-14 Mgt rootstock favoring an early grape ripening. However, higher pH values were observed in the CS/Rupestris du Lot, CS/5BB K and CS/Gravesac than CS/420A Mgt, CS/110 R and CS/Isabel wines. These results show that there is a diversity of rootstocks that can be used by the growers due to the Cabernet Sauvignon wine composition similarities.

When the COVID-19 emergency raised, the entire world -and small communities with it- had to stop, adapt, find ways to face the big ongoing challenge. The article reports the reaction and the changes undertaken with an ongoing project that was, in February 2020, experimenting, inside the hospital environment, the therapeutic effects of knitting on people with physical and psychological pathologies. The project, driven by scientific studies made in universities, hospitals and research centers worldwide, had the aim to bring the intervention of designers on the topic, to answer the emerged need to promote research in what is considered a low-investigated and high-promising field. Experimental pilot actions, designed and led by designers on-field, were going on when the emergency changed the scenario, limited the environment, shifted the eye on a new, wider target of healthy people, made knitting a tool to face new circumstances and improve everyday-life quality.Observing the newly emerged scenario and the spontaneous initiatives risen on the web (and on social media in particular) to help individuals in spending the forced time at home in meaningful ways, designers involved in the ongoing project identified in knitting an activity that could be beneficial on a psychological and physical level also for quarantined individuals. The project took a new perspective and evolved in the #IOLAVOROAMAGLIA (#IKNIT) social media campaign, linked to the globally spread #STAYHOME campaign, aimed at inviting people to remain home for preventing the diffusion of the infection, while proposing at the same time new solutions for positively living the emergency times. #IOLAVOROAMAGLIA was embraced by many users and it also became a weekly scheduled live virtual workshop, with a direct reference to the workshops in the hospital of XXXX, temporarily stopped during lockdown.The two projects, on-field and online, proved how knitting can be a meaningful solution not only for healthcare, but also for the daily life of people, both in normal times and in emergency situations.Moreover, the role of the designer and of a design driven approach proved to be fundamental, for the product and service creation, improvement and consolidation and for its communication for valorization and promotion.

This article is devoted to the use of a thermal factor in procedures called systemic hypertermotherapy. Different methods leading to increase in body temperature have been presented. The course of various therapies based on outside heat is described. A short review of the therapeutic effects of overheating has been made. In addition, both indications for using this type of treatment were given and attention was paid to existing contraindications. The facts cited in the article indicate that systemic hyperthermotherapy may be a perfect complement to the treatment procedures of patients suffering from diseases such as hypertension, depression, fibromyalgia, rheumatological and cancer diseases and others.

Abstract Background: Fatty liver disease is one of the most common liver complications worldwide. Also, blood lipids are elevated cholesterol or triglyceride levels from the normal amount in the blood that causes fatty liver disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effects of a new healthy and viable food supplement from wheat on fatty liver disease and blood lipids in animal model.Methods: The new NBS healthy and viable food supplement was prepared by a green route. The NBS healthy and live food powder had various vitamins, macro and micro molecules, and ingredients such as B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, C, K, A, E, D, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, magnesium, calcium, iron, manganese, zinc, copper, omega-3 and etc. For therapeutic and preventive effects of the new healthy and viable dietary supplement on fatty liver and blood lipids, 25 Wistar rats weighing 180–220 g were used. The rats were divided into 5 groups and were treated with 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg of healthy and live medication.Results: Investigation of the interaction between the concentrations of the medication supplement showed that 100 mg/ kg has the most therapeutic effect against oasises in fatty liver disease. Also, it was found that the concentration of 1000 mg/ kg has the most reducing effect on the level of lipid profile.Conclusions: The new food supplement reduces the level of hepatic macrovesicles, microvesicles, and the steatosis symptoms without specific hepatic complications. Also, the healthy food causes reduction of lipid parameters.
