Objective: To describe and analyze characteristics of cases of spinal cord Trauma (SCT) among traffic accident victims admitted to a referral hospital. Method: Descriptive, analytical, cross-sectional study with quantitative approach, developed in the city of Campina Grande, in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. The population consists of 1,884 medical records of patients admitted to hospital after damage caused by traffic accidents from January to December 2016. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, adopting a significance level of 5%. Results: Among the victims of traffic accidents, there was a male predominance (85.4%). The most affected age group was 21 to 30 years (29%). Accidents involving motorcyclists were predominant (82.9%) and 43 victims (2.3%) suffered spinal injury. Among these ones, there was a prevalence of males (86%), in the age group between 21 and 30 years (35.7%). In 30 cases (69.8%), the victims had spinal injuries. The cervical level (55.8%) was dominant. In addition, 46.7% of the victims were classified as ASIA and there were 9 cases (30%) of paraplegia and 1 case (3.3%) of tetraplegia. A bivariate analysis revealed a significant association between the variable presence of SCT and type of accident (p <0.001), use of cervical collar (p <0.005), injuries in other anatomical regions (p <0.001), surgical treatment (p < 0.001) and outcome of the patient’s situation (p <0.005). Conclusions: Among the victims of traffic accidents and SCT there was a predominance of males, young individuals and motorcyclists. Keywords: Epidemiology. Traffic-accidents. Public health.
ABSTRACT

The present research seeks to find out a model of criminal case resolution of traffic accidents causing death in Traffic Directorate of Yogyakarta (DIY) Police Department through either criminal justice system or mediation. Socio-legal research or non-doctrinal research has been used for this research. The research location is located in the Traffic Directorate of Yogyakarta Police Department. The research data use primary and secondary data. The results of this research indicate that in Traffic Directorate of DIY Police Department criminal case of traffic accidents causing death is resolved through criminal justice system with a record of ordinary examination. It is in accordance with the Decree of Indonesian National Police Number 15 of 2013 regarding Procedures for Handling Traffic Accident. Meanwhile, mediation is never used to resolve such case since there exists no legal framework. The article, therefore, suggests that revision of the Decree should be made. The criminal case resolution of traffic accidents causing death should fall into two forms, namely willful misconduct and negligence. A case with willful misconduct should be resolved through criminal justice system, while that negligence is resolved through mediation.

Keywords: accident, death, criminal justice system, mediation

In this paper, data on road traffic casualties by age groups, from 2009 to 2013, will be used. Using published road traffic casualty statistics from the National Road Safety Commission of Ghana, a 2 ´ 8 contingency table is used to determine whether road traffic casualty and age group are independent. A one factor analysis of variance tests shall be used to conduct a comparative analysis of the rate of road traffic fatalities per 100 casualties across the various age groups in Ghana. A multiple comparison test, using the Fisher least significance difference (LSD) method, shall be conducted to determine which pairs of age groups are significantly different. The study will show that road traffic casualty is not independent of age group. The analysis of variance will show that there are significant differences in road traffic fatality indices (fatality per 100 casualties) among various age groups in Ghana. The risks of dying in a road traffic accident among children under 6 years and older population who are over 65 years are both significantly higher than those of other age groups. This points to the fact that, although smaller number of children under 6 years and older population who are over 65 years die in road traffic accidents each year, more and more people as a proportion of the recorded number of casualties, are being killed through road traffic accidents among these two categories of age groups. Thus, the probability of being killed in a fatal road traffic accident is significantly high in each of these two age groups.

Gresik regency as the population increases and people use roads for their activities, accidents often occur on roads, especially in Manyar sub-district, which also has many industrial places. According to accident data for the last 4 years from the police, it was found that there was an increase and decrease in the number of accident events each year. This study uses secondary data from the local police. Then the data is analyzed using the EAN (Equivalent Accident Number), UCL (Upper Control Limit), BKA (Upper Control Limit) method, and using QGIS software to display in more detail the accident-prone areas. The results of the analysis using the EAN method obtained the highest number of accidents on Jl. Raya Manyar KM 10 is 604. For the BKA value of 384, while the UCL value is 374, from these results that the EAN value at JL Raya Manyar KM 10 exceeds the BKA and UCL values, it can be concluded that Jl. Raya Manyar KM 10 is an accident-prone area. The results of the analysis are then entered into the QGIS software to display in more detail the areas prone to traffic accidents on roads in Manyar District, Gresik.

This research aims to examine restorative justice in the settlement of traffic accidents caused by the death toll from the customary judiciary perspective in Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan. The fact of the field shows that a customary judiciary is an option for indigenous people to settle traffic accidents that resulted in the death according to customary decision. The customary judicial process is led by Pomuntuh Adat with deliberation for consensus involving the perpetrators/drivers and heirs of his family and heirs of the victim's family. Adat decision by punishing perpetrators to repay or reinstate victims losses due to criminal acts sanctioned the customary verdict where the perpetrators/drivers and heirs of the family pay customary fines to the heirs of the victim's family and also perform customary rituals as a form of recovery of natural balance. The matter of traffic accident that has been decided through the customary judiciary, it is not processed through the process through the state's prejustice. The research is an empirical legal research, using secondary data through literature studies. Primary Data was obtained through interviews where the results concluded that the settlement of a traffic accident resulting in a death toll in a customary judicial perspective is a real manifestation of restorative justice
