Introduction. Health condition is one of the basic factors determining the quality of life of children and adolescents. In early childhood, its poor condition is particularly dangerous as it can interfere with developmental processes and lead to long-term and permanent health problems. Chronic diseases are distinguished among the most common health diseases of children and adolescents. They constitute one of the most serious phenomena and problems of the modern world, resulting from the prevalence in the population, and above all from the consequences it causes in an individual and social sense. The catalog of chronic diseases includes: asthma, allergies, heart diseases, arterial hypertension, stroke, cancer, kidney diseases, multiple sclerosis, degenerative joint diseases and mental diseases. In Poland, the prevalence of chronic diseases in children aged 0-14 is found in 27%, and among adolescents aged 15-19 it is found in 23%. According to the age category of children, chronic disease was diagnosed in 23% of children aged 0-4; 30% – 5-9 years; 29% – 10-14 years. No systematic epidemiological studies are conducted in Poland on the occurrence of chronic diseases in the population of children and adolescents. Aim. The aim of the article is to present the epidemiology of selected chronic diseases among children and adolescents living in several cities of the Silesian Voivodeship. Material and methods. The research material is data from the Silesian Voivodship Office in Katowice – Department of Health. Tables were then drawn up that illustrate the epidemiology of the diseases discussed. Results. The lowest incidence rate of bronchial asthma was recorded in Sosnowiec in 2010 (18.2/10,000) and the highest in Bielsko-Biała in 2014 (91.1/10,000). In Bielsko-Biała and Katowice, the cancer incidence rate is increasing. Conclusions. The general health condition of Polish children (0-14 years) is moderately satisfactory, and children and adolescents from industrial areas, which include the Śląskie Voivodeship, are particularly exposed to more frequent incidence of respiratory diseases and various types of allergies. Currently, every fourth child has long-term health problems (26.1%), and they are more common in older children, among 10-14 year-olds (31.2%).

Introduction. Health condition is one of the basic factors determining the quality of life of children and adolescents. Childhood ill health is especially dangerous as it can interfere with developmental processes and lead to long-term and permanent health problems. Health problems that cause hospitalization are mainly childhood diseases, which, due to the course or accompanying complications, require hospital treatment. The most common reasons for hospitalizing children and adolescents in children are respiratory infections, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and mental diseases. Aim. The aim of the article is to present the most frequent hospitalizations of children and adolescents from various cities of the Silesian Voivodeship in 2010-2018. Material and methods. The research material is data from the Silesian Voivodeship Office in Katowice – Department of Health. Results. The hospitalization rate for bronchial asthma is increasing in Bielsko-Biała and Sosnowiec. In Bielsko-Biała, Katowice, Sosnowiec and Zabrze, the number of children hospitalized due to mental disorders is increasing. Conclusions. Hospitalization due to neoplastic diseases is variable in all the discussed cities of the Silesian Voivodeship. One of the basic elements of health policy is having knowledge about the health condition of the population of children and adolescents and its wider health needs. Analyzes of the frequency and causes of hospitalization of children and adolescents can be a source of information on factors influencing the health of children and adolescents.

The improvement of human health condition is an important objective that remains relevant since the origin of human being. Currently, cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of death worldwide. For this reason, permanent real-time monitoring of heart activity (Electrocardiogram: ECG), its analysis and alerting of concerned person is a solution to decrease the death toll provoked by heart diseases. ECG signal of medical quality is necessary for permanent monitoring and accurate heart examining. It can be obtained from instrumented underwear only if it is equipped with high quality, flexible textile based electrodes guaranteeing low contact resistance between the skin and them. This work is therefore devoted to the design and test of wearable textile embroidered bands following defined protocol for ECG long-term monitoring. These bands were investigated in three configurations: band without any adding layer to protect lines between electrodes and the connector, band with lines protected by simple yarn, band with lines protected with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). Bands were worn around chest by healthy subjects in a sitting position and ECG signals were acquired by an Arduino-based device and assessed. Washability tests of connected underwear were carried out over 50 washing cycles in a domestic machine and by using a commercial detergent. Influence of encapsulation process on the electrical properties of textile electrodes during repetitive washing process has also been investigated and analyzed. All the ECG signals acquired and recorded have been reviewed by a cardiologist in order to validate their quality required for accurate diagnosis.

When the COVID-19 outbreak spread across the globe, Thailand was the first country to report a COVID patient outside of China. We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study to examine the mental health condition and the risk factors associated with the mental health problems of people in state quarantine. Our study sample included 4,069 people who were in state quarantine in the eastern region of Thailand. We administered a stress assessment test, a depression screening questionnaire, a suicidal risks screening tool and a COVID-19 anxiety screening scale, which were developed by the Department of Mental Health, Thailand. We found that most people in state quarantine reported a moderate level of COVID-19 anxiety, a mild level of stress, and no current risk of suicide. The risk factors associated with stress were female gender (OR = 2.290, p < 0.001, 95% CI [1.687, 3.109]) and having chronic diseases (OR = 2.443, p < 0.001, 95%CI [1.720, 3.470]). The factor associated with depression was female gender (OR = 1.380, p < 0.001, 95%CI [1.201, 1.586]). The factors associated with risks for suicide were female gender (OR = 2.059, p < 0.001, 95%CI [1.553, 2.729]) and having chronic diseases (OR = 2.128, p < 0.001, 95%CI [1.510, 2.998]). The factors associated with COVID-19 anxiety were female gender (OR = 1.469, p < 0.001, 95%CI [1.294, 1.669]) and having chronic diseases (OR = 1.329, p = 0.011, 95%CI [1.066, 1.657]). A system to screen for mental health problems and rapid assistance offered to people in state quarantine who are at risk of mental health problems are recommended to reduce the severity of the problems.

Very-low-carbohydrate ketogenic diets have been long been used to reduce seizure frequency and more recently have been promoted for a variety of health conditions, including obesity, diabetes, and liver disease. Ketogenic diets may provide short-term improvement and aid in symptom management for some chronic diseases. Such diets affect diet quality, typically increasing intake of foods linked to chronic disease risk and decreasing intake of foods found to be protective in epidemiological studies. This review examines the effects of ketogenic diets on common chronic diseases, as well as their impact on diet quality and possible risks associated with their use. Given often-temporary improvements, unfavorable effects on dietary intake, and inadequate data demonstrating long-term safety, for most individuals, the risks of ketogenic diets may outweigh the benefits.

Abstract Background Child maltreatment is prevalent and associated with both short- and long-term health problems. Previous studies have established child maltreatment as a risk factor for a wide range of problems over the life course such as mental- and somatic health problems, self-harm, alcohol- and drug abuse and decreased work-life participation. Still, there are few large and well-conducted longitudinal studies focusing on describing prevalence and identifying risk factors and long-term consequences of child maltreatment. The purpose of the current study is to recruit a large number of children and adolescents exposed to maltreatment and follow them long-term. Methods/design The current study is a longitudinal cohort study and will use a multi-informant design (child/adolescent, caregiver, and administrative data). Participants will be recruited from the Stine Sofie Centre (SSC), a learning and coping centre for children and adolescents (≤18 years) exposed to maltreatment, which includes physical and emotional abuse, neglect and/or sexual abuse. Questionnaire-based assessments from self-reports (as well as parent-reports) will be carried out at regular time intervals throughout their lives, on topics such as abuse, negative life events, mental and somatic health problems, resilience and coping, satisfaction with health services, social-, family-, and school function, as well as self-harm and substance abuse. Participants will be assessed upon entry to the centre and followed up annually until they reach 18 years and bi-annually after. Given written consent, participants’ responses will be linked to relevant national registries in order to examine predictive factors and important outcomes in terms of subsequent health, education, criminal records and work affiliation. Discussion This study will examine short- and long-term consequences of child maltreatment across a range of health-related outcomes in a longitudinal perspective. Results from the current study might have implications for the development of preventive and intervention programs related to child maltreatment and the organization and follow-up of the services these children receive. The current study will hopefully contribute with knowledge of risk-factors, short- and long-term health-related and other issues that can contribute to practices aimed at improving the overall life-course for children and adolescents who have experienced childhood maltreatment.

Due to the automation trends going on rapidly on these days in major organizations employees are constantly facing severe stress regarding their jobs. This insecurity levels in them is leading to several health problems some of which are to be monitored and proper medical care should be taken. Due to the work stress and lack of leisure’s time many Employee’s are postponing their health check-ups and facing major health issues. These health issues like blood pressure , heart diseases , diabetes, pneumonia etc., can be kept at checking levels if they are regularly monitored and avoiding future problems. Due to these health problems employees are not able to do their work as expected. So if the organizations take a major initiative regarding in this point of view by keeping a regular check on employees health and there routine medical check-ups by sending periodic alert messages to the corresponding employee reminding about their check-ups. In this Paper we are trying to design a software Application which enables the organization to provide necessary health check-up facilities to their employee’s by collecting the medical information from each employee while joining the organization. It can also track employee health condition during his travel by using GPS. It would be of a great help to every employee. The organization collects medical information regarding the employee’s making it mandatory process and storing the data in database (PHR),

Context: Caregivers of children with heart diseases are faced with the long term care of these children and may suffer psychological illnesses as a result. Aims: To determine the prevalence and determinants of depression among caregivers of children with heart diseases attending two Out-patient clinics in South-South Nigeria. Materials and Methods: It was a cross-sectional study involving the use of the revised Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CESD-R) questionnaire. Data were entered into an Excel spreadsheet and analyzed using SPSS 22.0. Results: Ages of the participants ranged from 24 to 59 years with a mean age of 37.49 years (SD 6.973) and majority were female (79.9%). The overall mean CESD-R score was 8.61 (SD 16.18), ranging from 0 to 60. There was a significant difference in the CESD-R scores between male and female participants (t=2.362, p=0.02) with females scoring higher than males (10.24± 17.69  and 2.15± 3.13) respectively. Overall, depression was found among 23(17.1%) participants. Depression was significantly associated with the female sex (x2=7.006, p=0.009), a history of a mental health illness in the past (x2=66.496, p=0.029) and the marital status of the participants (x2=19.776, p=0.05). No significant relationship was found between depression and age, religion, tribe and educational status (p>0.05), history of medical illnesses (x2=53.006, p=0.538) or type of heart disease the children/wards of the participants were being managed for (x2=8.274, p=0.902). Conclusion: The rate of depression among caregivers of children being managed for congenital and acquired heart diseases in this study is significant. It is recommended that caregivers of children with congenital and acquired heart diseases are routinely given relevant psychosocial support to prevent the development of depression. Routine screening for depression and appropriate intervention for those who meet the criteria is also recommended.

Plant-derived polyphenolic compounds have gained widespread recognition as remarkable nutraceuticals for the prevention and treatment of various disorders, such as cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, diabetes, osteoporosis, and neoplastic diseases. Evidence from the epidemiological studies has suggested the association between long-term consumption of diets rich in polyphenols and protection against chronic diseases. Nevertheless, the applications of these phytochemicals are limited due to its low solubility, low bioavailability, instability, and degradability by in vivo and in vitro conditions. Therefore, in recent years, newer approaches have been attempted to solve the restrictions related to their delivery system. Nanoencapsulation of phenolic compounds with biopolymeric nanoparticles could be a promising strategy for protection and effective delivery of phenolics. Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) is one of the most successfully developed biodegradable polymers that has attracted considerable attention due to its attractive properties. In this review, our main goal is to cover the relevant recent studies that explore the pharmaceutical significance and therapeutic superiority of the advance delivery systems of phenolic compounds using PLGA-based nanoparticles. A summary of the recent studies implementing encapsulation techniques applied to polyphenolic compounds from plants confirmed that nanoencapsulation with PLGA nanoparticles is a promising approach to potentialize their therapeutic activity.
